Title: Touhou in the Family
Post by: チソウ タイゼン on October 21, 2010, 04:48:39 AM
Relatives/friends that you have latched Touhou onto, unwittingly or not!

My sister is playing PCB as we speak. Being seven, she plays on Easy and openly voices her discontent regarding Alice :D
My other sister stares at the bullet patterns.
My dad has played. In short, it isn't his cup of tea.
My mother HAS NO TIME FOR YOUR JAPANESE GAME BULLSHIT CLEAN YOUR ROOM
And my girlfriend-
She says that she can get into the music ("It isn't bad!"), and the characters, but the gameplay itself gives her headaches :P

So, how about you?

I've shown my brother some Youtube videos that depict gameplay.

That's it, really. My brother doesn't play, and I can rarely ever play. My brother hardly cares about the characters, too.

Brother's played a few times. Refuses to play on Easy because Overdrive. One friend's played more often, I've gotten him to play some other STG too. Other friends know what it is but probably haven't played, I'm just the crazy asian kid.
Mom gets dizzy watching but she's a wimp.

Glad I'm not alone.

Also, my not-quite-sis and not-quite-bro are both fans. My old man loves the music, but hasn't played (and probably never will). Mom has been intrigued the handful of times she's seen it.

I think my dad can recognize Lovestruck Tomboy from all the time I had to restart extra in PoFV.  That's about it.

Well, my parents don't actually like Touhou or stuff related to it, but my mom has once hummed part of Cirno's theme (today, even!).
My brother has been into Touhou since the days I spent watching replays of EoSD and PCB. Now he has TH10.5 and TH11. He does plan on getting himself TH06-TH08 and the TH12.x's. (EDIT: Just to note that he doesn't ever listen to the music. He says it's sorta distracting. I agree, actually. Many of my gameovers are due to me humming to the music :V)

Then there's me.

Surprisingly, my mom loves it. She loves the music and the characters, and she thinks the spellcards are beautiful.

The rest of my family is pretty apathetic. I showed EoSD to my brother once, but he didn't really have much interest in it. He likes the arranges I've shown him, though.

My parents have heard a few songs, though they didn't recognize it specifically as Touhou stuff. They thought it sounded good, though neither of them are really the types to give the series any more attention than they already do. And my brother has resisted all attempts at conversion so far.

My lil bro played EoSD, he hates Rumia because he always game over at her midboss. Other times he listen (rarely) to Kaguya's theme arranges. My mom likes the music but hates Necrofantasia and etc. as it was "noise" to her. She isn't fond of trumpets anyways... Dad is meh about it. My friend got to play the fighting games (10.5) and 12.5. Anyone else "WHY THE HELL ARE YOU PLAYING THIS GAME?! ITS A BUNCH OF GIRLS!"

My nephew used to play IN together with me, but he only was interested in beating the Last Words. Further, nobody in my family is a gamer that enjoys shmups. But that is ok. I will be the lonely one :V

My little sister is playing UFO and left Cirno Shimeji on for a day just to see how many clones she had.
My dad said "I used to play Space Invaders for 3 days straight when I was at your age. I'm tired of those stuffs".
My mom said the IOSYS songs are annoying.
My roommate plays SWR, mostly arcade mode, and we had several matches. He plays Sakuya, I play Remilia, I always win.
My aunt said that my eyes won't last long.

My brother, maybe 4 friends, and a few people online, but none of them are really obsessed like I am.

My parents are stickily out of the picture when it comes to touhou or anything Japanese.
They take every chance to bust my chops for liking politics, cartoons, anime, scifi, and video games.
Being into this all girl game would likely be having them confirming me for homosexual. Since they are always
asking me because I've never had a relationship and have a few gay friends.

I've tried having friends play. Some come back after a round of easy mode and say that is a pretty entertaining game and others complain about the game being difficult even on Easy.

I've had my brother play and he have actually managed IN Normal and some of the other games on Easy + almost cleared IN Extra - made it to the Volcano.

Most people kinda gets discouraged from watching me play though. They think its 'cause i don't have a life that i'm so "freakishly good". No really, 30 minutes a day, some more when you feel like it, spread over 2 years will do that to you.

In general though, i find that most people in this country are quite hesitant to ever try something they don't know what is. Especially something that's not mainstream.

im the only one who even knows about touhou in my family. i think.
when i visited my nephew i downloaded SA there and showed it to him, and the next time i see him he tells me about how awesome it was. but i think he forgot about it already

my parents only know touhou music. which i play for hours on my piano. daily. it's like getting brainwashed. only you dont notice it.
subliminal brainwashing...

I was once playing EoSD in lunatic, and my brother came and tried to win it. (of course, he lost in the first stage xD)
Then he saw me playing DS. He won a spellcard for me.
And he also tried to play GFW. Though, the gameplay ...>.<...

I think the furthest I've gotten to introducing my family is telling one of my sisters about the similarities between Sakuya and Dio Brando, and naming my brother's Pokemon HeartGold rival "Cirno" when he asked for a name. (I don't know why I picked Cirno either. :V )

Other than that, I keep it to myself. Mainly because of what my dad would say.

My mother HAS NO TIME FOR YOUR JAPANESE GAME BULLSHIT CLEAN YOUR ROOM
Pretty much the same here.  She saw me playing PCB once and was like "WHY ARE YOU PLAYING THAT STUPID JAPANESE STUFF?!?!"

I won't even try introducing my dad.  He's video-game impaired. ::)

I showed my cousin Imperishable Night and he got through all six stages.....on Easy......with several continues.  I can tell he really liked the music (While fighting Eirin, he commented on the difficulty of the spell cards, stating that the "FRICKIN EPIC MUSIC doesn't help either" in dodging them :V), but now he refuses to play any Touhou game whatsoever every time I see him.  I think I scarred him...... :3

I've tried to get a few of my siblings to play PoFV with me, but that didn't really work out. My brother hates anything that has anything to do with the Japanese, and the majority of my siblings groan whenever we plug in a Touhou music CD in car rides (the loudest groaners have since got an ipod and listen to hip-hop instead of complaining). My teenage sister loves the music, and my older sister (urm, younger than me) will handle the music but only for a certain stretch of time. My mother likes the music and her favorite songs are Bad Apple!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtutLA63Cp8) and Double Scarlet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMPQWjb0rZo). I post remixes on Facebook almost every day, and she's usually the only one to comment on them.

Oh, and "baka baka" is a rather normal insult in my family. Half of them just say it because it sounds cool.

Only my Cousin plays Touhou, she's better than me, but has lesser stamina because she's kinda sickly and because she's Patchy, so she become tired after the 4th stage and she gets a lot worse, and with the fighting games, she murders me in the first matches but she becomes worse and worse as time passes. Also, she can't play Fairy Wars properly because her hands are too small to use 4 buttons. (And mainly because on the Hungarian keyboards, there's an extra button between shift and Y(Z); it's only easy for me because I have large hands).

I tried for a long while to get one of my sisters to play Touhou. Several problems quickly emerged.

One, she refused to play any character other than Sakuya, even when I told her that Sakuya was the hardest and most technical character in PCB.
Two, despite me telling her a bomb is better than a death, she never got the hang of panicbombing and died several times with 4 bombs in stock.
Three, and this is the really heartbreaking one - she could no-miss clear the first 3 stages, but Merlin absolutely demolished her every single time. Eventually she just got too annoyed with it and ragequit.

I have not tried with either of my other, less weeaboo sisters. :S

My sister watches me play and likes some characters. I've showed it to random family members, they usually go "hmm okay" or "that's pretty".
Got a friend in school playing for a short time, he wasn't very determined though and gave up after two days  :(

This isn't a good thing. I can rant for ages on why I hate that flash (hell, just the one clip) and what it's done to fan mentality.

Not saying the flash is good (or the song, too... too 'busy' and 'random' for me, but that's another rant), only saying that because of a combination of stupid pride/suicidal overconfidence and that, I can't play on Easy.

Mainly the stupid pride/overconfidence bit.

You are definitely not alone on this. (http://pooshlmer.com/wakaba/res/480125.html#480158)

As for me, I should get my parents to try out Touhou. I've had some success with my schoolmates in high school and university, but while my parents have seen me play, I haven't gotten them to actually try it themselves. Hm.

Without shame, I simply don't feel any need to go back and improve on what I've done. I don't see why that would be unhealthy.
Title: Re: Touhou in the Family
Post by: Jana on October 22, 2010, 04:29:44 AM
It's psychologically unhealthy because you should have the drive to improve instilled upon you naturally. You should desire to do better because you want to do better, not because you failed. Over time, the kind of mindset you're taking can be very damaging.

Okay, Flamenco, I can assume you play Easy because you probably wouldn't be saying that otherwise.
So you 1cc Easy on a game.
Then you 1cc it on a few more games.
Eventually you 1cc all the games you planned on 1ccing. You're awesome enough for Normal now.

Wait, now there's nobody making fun of you for playing Normal. Are you going to stop?

Wait, now there's nobody making fun of you for playing Hard. Are you going to stop?

Wait, there's nobody making fun of you for playing Lunatic. Are you going to stop?

Wait, now you're getting praised for playing Lunatic well. Are you going to stop?

Uh, no. I'm not a complete pessimist. I know when I've done something I can personally be proud of, I know my limits.
Title: Re: Touhou in the Family
Post by: Drake on October 22, 2010, 04:55:19 AM
So where exactly is your border of "I improve by shame" and "I improve by accomplishments"? As far as I can see it's just Easy. In which case, why shouldn't you be proud of accomplishing anything on Easy, and/or why should you need shame in order to improve?

I mean even if you have a reason you did say "without shame, how is it you're supposed to improve oneself?"; it seems like you meant it as a general question instead of a personal one.

For low level players such as myself, clearing the extra stage is the best you could hope for, right? so I guess that's when I should be satisfied with myself. I've already got access to a few of them. Just gotta 1cc the remaining games.

I've tried so hard to get my friends and family hooked on Touhou, but they refuse... sighh.. *WAILS*.
I thought for sure my brother at least would get into it because he's a total "Weeaboo" (Not really a Japanophile so much as anything Asian though). I mean he watches Naruto ffs, and he's over 30! He's a homophobic or something (he isn't really but.. seems to be for the case of Touhou), seems to think a game with so much femininity is lame. I told him it's not important and not really applicable, just like the fact that everyone in Call of Duty is a man. But he says "that's different".

I got my brother to play not one, but four rounds.

He tried Normal Stage 1, Normal Stage 6, and Easy Stage 5.
He likes it, and he thinks it's hard :D

And then he tried Lunatic Stage 1.
He got to Cold Sign Lingering Cold L and then died.

He watched me play Extra before all this though.

"Where are you supposed to be watching?

Oh. I was looking at the whole screen and it was giving me a headache."
(Newb non double-quoting)
Same heree. My mom knew I loved a game/stuff called Touhou, but after a while I found out she'd never really seen the gameplay. So just for fun I went to PCB/Extra Mode, expecting to die decently fast considering I don't usually focus well with others watching. I ended up getting past Ran's spellcard at the start where you move about a millimeter every second, then continued on doing spellcards I'd never even seen, doubling my highscore. (Did I mention it was exactly my 200th try?) Lucky me? o_O
Afterwords, she told me all the moving patterns were giving her a headache. :o Then there's that one video "Why Touhou should have a super-easy mode" or something... He died watching two giant fireballs on Easy and didn't notice a smaller bullet hit him.

So, I guess it's official then? The number one cause of failure in new players is them trying to watch the whole screen and not their character. =P

The most I've ever told my mom about Touhou was this year's Cirno Day, when I tried to explain who she is and where the ⑨ thing came from. The only part she liked was when I showed her this thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAKVp_g9Go0).

Uhhh. Watching your hitox instead of the screen is bad, not good. Granted watching the patterns aesthetically is bad, bur you want to view as much as you can handle while reading all the trajectories... Some microfiche cards make me focus on the dot though, sanae is a good example. Watching your dot on vowg or something is very bad though.

Hmm... i wonder if i should upload that video of one of my friends facing off against Maniac Mode Larsa on Mushi Futari. Its not Touhou but the dude does know about Touhou. I have explained "the rules of the game to him". We decided that he needed to play a shmup.

Let's just say that he died. A lot. Maybe i should have him play Fairy Wars, remap the C button to A and refrain from telling him about freezing.  :V

Where are you supposed to be watching?

Yeah. That's where you're supposed to say "I take in the enitre screen at a time!".

My mom just knows it as "the game where I die a lot." :fail:

I can totally relate to that. I have had times where my parents would tell me to calm down.   :)

Copypaste from YKYAtTW:
At my friend's house, there's this wall-hanging thing that says "SPRING!"

When I'm over there, every time I see it I want to put a picture of Lily White above it.

One time I did tell him I knew something that would go perfectly above it, but I didn't elaborate further.

Also, this thread gave me an idea: How do you think ZUN's family feels about Touhou?

I once showed some of my replays to my mother and she was like: Ewww what is with those little balls floating around the screen? (the danmaku) And why don't you play something easier like Mario?

Haha, She didn't like the game, but she says the girls are cute. Specially Youmu and Reimu.

Father: YOU'RE TOO OLD TO BE PLAYING GAMES (He's been telling me this since I was like 16)
Mother: Listen to what your father says

So basically even trying to show them Touhou means game over

As for the music, which I play on piano for hours everyday...

Mother: Sounds Japanese. (Me: yeah, it is)
Only theme she ever commented on that was nice was Greenwich in the Sky. (and it's technically not a theme as well)
Father: STOP PLAYING THAT PLAY ME MY 70'S POP NAO

Well I haven't told anything to my sister but I doubt she'd be into it. She isn't the gamer type after all..

Father: Doesn't really know it exists, perhaps for the better.
Mother: "Auuuugh, I don't understand how you can play that, it makes my eyes hurt."
Brother a): *shrugs, continues playing WoW*
Brother b): Lurves the music, knows more than half of the cast by name, regularly plays 'soku with me when he is at home for once.

So yeah...

Have you tried showing your friends videos from some of us cool bro's? I did that long time ago when i was playing Normal. I told my friend, "you think i'm good? Watch this guy!" and then link to one of Kefit's videos. Great fun. He was like "OMG, there is totally way too many bullets for the human brain to keep track of!"

Doing that stuff is hard for me currently. I can only link to a few people better than me and because things are going on at such a high level they don't really see the difference of me doing a moderate job and Krim doing it flawlessly.

I can only show them videos of arcade games and they say it looks more managable because of less bullets. I keep trying to tell them that less bullets can be far more lethal if they are much faster but they won't listen. :)

But what i was talking about was that you should try showing your friends Jaimers' timeout of Scarlet Gensokyo. That spell is the embodiment of reading the entire screen at once. You will get slaugthered if you focus purely on your hitbox.

My friend has PCB on his laptop, but only half the soundtrack(For MIDI/WAV, he has only one of them) to save space. I was playing Extra. I saw my way to Kokurri-sans Contract or w/e. I normally can't make it past a few seconds into Charming Seige. The entire room was watching, casue they liked the music(I was still on the stage portion), then came in Ran who got stomped. Capped everything but Contract, which wrecked me.

A case of "Came for the music, stayed for the win." I am now being dogged to get the PCB soundtrack so that I can copy it on Memory keys and CDs for them. Yay?

Moreso on topic: I got my Eldest brother to try out PCB. He can make it to St5 Mid-Boss Youmu, on Normal, without continues. And no, his name does not contain any part of Tenshi's name :V

I guess I was a little bit unclear. What I meant was.. Getting distracted by the pretty colors and patterns and not watching your hitbox at all. Yeah, that works better. >_>
I introduced another friend today. He actually -got- the game after calling Sanae's star patterns in a gameplay video satanic, told me he'd played it, then quit because it gave him a headache.
"You couldn't PAY me to play that game again!
Unless it was like 2 bucks."

Anyone have... :V

As for luring victims friends of my own into Touhou, I have so far introduced three good friends of mine to it.  One plays EOSD (the only Touhou game she has at the moment) very sporadically.  One absolutely loves the music and doujin stuff, but refuses to even attempt the game, as gameplay videos give her headaches, and (in her own words) "sucks at 'real-time' games" (she's into turn-based games a lot).  One is into the music and seems fascinated by the expansive Touhou fanbase, but has decided not to start playing Touhou until summer, since she doesn't want to get "addicted" right now.

My bro tried EoSD once and that's pretty much it. I forgot how far he got, I think it was just after midboss china before he ran out of continues. I was watching and telling him "use your bombs" every time there was more than 0 bullets on the screen but he only used 1 bomb the whole time. He used to pride himself for playing games on hard mode before I ever did too, wtf happened. Super scrub nowdays >=P

"I tried the game, it owned me on the first level."
"You got the game?  ??? How and when? XD"
"I have my ways.. o_O"
":/"
Whatever. =O

And since the topic is apparently how badly you failed your first time...
Really, I'd heard IN was the most noob-friendly, so I started with that. I used MAlice(Seriously, I started using the MAlice cannon before I even knew it had a name. O_O) and caught on somewhat fast, since I'd seen maybe 4 6-9-minute videos. I really sucked so I bombed a lot. 90% of the time I wouldn't have died, but at least I didn't. Failed somewhere on the second level after getting caught up staring at the patterns. :V

In other news, my brother keeps using Touhou as a type of blackmail/leverage on me. "I'll read the 'Flandre story' if you play the wii with me", "If you so-and-so I'll watch [Insert some Touhou music/video]", etc. None of it works of course. I did manage to make him get a Cirno background and a lot of songs stuck in his head, though, so we'll see how that works out.

My brother became completely absorbed into Touhou by the time I showed it to him, he played PCB first and ran out of continues at Alice (normal mode), he played StB (or was it Double Spoiler...) And accused China of using melee instead of danmaku.

My mother has seen little snippets of gameplay and a heck of a lot of my Touhou pictures folder and doesn't seem to care.

My father watched me fight Eirin's last spellcard and he described it as, and I quote "Trying to dodge rice"

You can't get kicked if you hug the bottom. Most noobs hug the bottom to my knowledge. They are scared of the bullets. They have no confidence in their reflexes because they know that no matter how slow they are they will kill them if they get hit.

I keep telling people that you won't get anywhere if you stand around the center of the screen hugging the bottom and that they need to move around aggresively. Kill enemies as fast as possible and PoC whenever possible to get points which leads to lives.

In other words, getting kicked on your first times through means you might've got a knack for shmupping.  ;)

I didn't hug the bottom when I started, I just didn't recognize a lot of the conventions like streaming and herding (I think that's what it's called? PCB S.4 for reference) and frequently screwed them up.
I was okay at micrododging and have gotten better since then, but that doesn't keep me from panicking as often as I did then now :fail:
Other times I made silly dodging mistakes like unfocus to dash away and hit something I wasn't looking at, or to forget about what isn't moving and run into IMMOBILE DANMAKU.

There doesn't seem to be a "Your first experiences with Touhou" thread so this off-topic spiel is fine
