Well, it certainly is starting to shape up around this shrine, I'll tell you what. We've got ourselves a fine cowrie treasure, a clever money-making device, and probably the most ornamental toilet paper holder since Liberace.
But what we don't have ... are box figurines!
Gpop and Arashi, this is your challenge:
Behold, your template (http://i36.tinypic.com/209hmb4.png). Save it to your computers. What you're going to do is open it in Photoshop, GIMP, MS Paint or whatever you please, and make a box figurine of a Gensokyan, or an Ijiyatsu character (here's an example (http://i36.tinypic.com/2v0ixxx.png), using Reimu). Then, you will print it, assemble it, and take a photo of it. You can add all the props you like to your figure, and give it whatever kind of background you please. In fact, this is encouraged.
You don't have to be some fancy-schmancy Photoshop Wizard to win this challenge, either - each entry will be judged by myself, Nobu and Rou on three criteria: Artistic Ability, Creativity and Entertainment Value. That means a well-drawn but boring box figure photo will lose to a not-so-well drawn but creative and entertaining box figure photo. But of course, sloppy work won't get you far, either.
We were going to give you two a mere three days to complete this challenge, but I decided no - I want the very best either of you can offer, so you have 100 hours (20:00 Friday, EST) to PM myself, Nobu and Rou the fruit of your labors. Judging will be done and a winner announced that day. Both entries will be displayed then for everyone else to admire or ridicule. This should give you ample time to make something halfway decent, so no whining.
Welp, better hop to it! Those box figures aren't gonna make themselves, you know.
Oh, damn, I nearly forgot: Gpop, you're not allowed to do Koishi. Broaden your horizons, man.

Also, I don't think you're going to need glue to assemble the figure - the template clearly shows where you cut, fold and insert. You might, however, need glue, tape, staples, glitter or puffy stickers for making your figures' props and backgrounds. Go nuts!

Oh hey, you're right, I didn't see the slots at a glance and most of the papercraft I did as a kid needed gluing 'cause the tabs just folded and got glued onto the other side of the fold/whatever. May grab a glue stick anyway just to make sure it holds a little better.

If an Ijiyatsu has a different concept art then the slaves' version, like say a pooshlmer version, can we use that instead for our box character?

The Slaves version is canon, of course, so that's the version you should stick to.

Ladies and gentleman, I thank you for coming to our humble shrine. Please, make yourselves comfortable.
Two servants of the gods, Gpop and Arashi, are deserving of your attention today. Gpop, as you know, has challenged Arashi for her Idiot Maiden position, and Arashi naturally accepted. So I gave them the challenge of constructing box figurines, replete with props and backgrounds, and sending photos of the results to us.
Well, those results are finally here. Each submission has been judged by myself, Nobu and Rou on three criteria: Artistic Ability, Creativity and Entertainment Value. So without further ado, allow me to present the results, in the order in which I received them. First up, Arashi:
Nitori's latest invention - a tank. (Made out of an empty cucumber soda bottle with wheels that sadly didn't photograph well but are supposed to look like kappamaki...) Set in a lovely autumn scene in the style of a kid's school diorama. :D

Hmm! A noble effort, worthy of the gods. What say you, judges?

Artistic Ability: The soda bottle tank is very well constructed, and I do enjoy the attention to detail. And the box figure is very cutely done. If you post the schematics for this, I am making it and putting it on my desk, for sure.
Creativity: I love how creative you got with the materials, from the kappamaki for wheels, the bottle cap for a steering wheel, and the cucumber soda bottle for the tank. It all fits Nitori perfectly. And the extra tab for the hat bill along with the diorama to boot? Awesome.
Entertainment Value: There isn?t much more entertaining than a Box-Nitori riding a cucumber soda-bottle tank, as far as I?m concerned. Do I really need to explain any further?
Rou
Artistic Ability: Nitori is pretty well constructed. Nice work on the expression, too.
Creativity: A bottle tank. Just...a cucumber soda bottle tank. With kappamaki for wheels. Enough said.
Entertainment Value: Concept - funny. Execution - hilarious.
Tengukami
Artistic Ability: Arashi is being self-deprecating in comparing this piece to a child's diorama. This shows real skill.
Creativity: It's a kappa on a tank, people.
Entertainment Value: I would use the first pic as an album cover, were I ever to release an album's worth of material.

Artistic Ability: I like how you did Shiki?s hat, and the LEGS *_* I do enjoy the detail on Shiki?s body piece too.
Creativity: Bringing in Ruro was a nice touch. Also the speech bubble was a nice touch. LEGS! Indeed.
Entertainment Value: The legs alone cracked me up. And this is very much how I envision Ruro would be, including the flower in her hand. Hilarious.
Rou
Artistic Ability: Detail on the Shikieiki outfit is impressive, and LEGS WOW. Ruro is cute.
Creativity: I never considered asking for MotK members, and the Shiki/Ruro combo is clever.
Entertainment Value: Legs e we/10.
Tengukami
Artistic Ability: Quite a bit of attention to detail on Shikeiki's hat and outfit, pretty impressive.
Creativity: I like the color scheme decided on for Ruro. That shows imagination.
Entertainment Value: Those legs, my goodness. You can tell Gpop knows his legs. Very enjoyable.
Alright! You've seen the efforts of Arashi and Gpop, and read the judgements. So what's the final call, judges? Did Gpop usurp Arashi, or has yet another incumbent Idiot Maiden retained her position?
Nobu
Well, I think both of you put in good effort, and I?m not disappointed in either submission. I really don?t want to choose, but I?m going to have to go with Arashi on this one. The amazing Nitori and the perfectly constructed tank was just too much. Sorry Gpop (and Ruro).
Rou
It's a tough call for me on this one, because I'm honestly really impressed with what both contestants have produced. In the end, though, I'm gonna have to edge out and give this one to Arashi, because - well, it's that TANK. I love it. Seriously, Pixiv would eat up stuff like this.

Well, I'm going to have to go ahead and say that both entries greatly impressed me. When I created this challenge I had no idea if the box figurine template even worked, let alone if it could produce results. But both Gpop and Arashi put their heart into their creations. They have both made something that this shrine could proudly display. Having said that, I have to agree with my fellow deities that Arashi went above and beyond. She created not just a figurine but a miniature story, an enjoyable little world.
And so, there you have it! Arashi hangs onto her Idiot Maiden title for now. Gpop, a worthy opponent though he was, can console himself knowing that he can now add "box figurine construction" to his skills list.

The fold lines for the body kinda got lost in editing, though. And for the pigtails and hat brim, I just drew by hand after printing, thus the just large colored swatches.

Yeah, it's the green ones from a box of mango melon Tic-Tacs - I decided I wanted some sort of candy inside to be like ammo or something for the tank and it was the only thing I could find I liked the color of >_>

It's 3 AM, but I'm glad I checked in on this. I've been looking forward to these results all day, and I'm very impressed with the work you both put into your projects. Arashi's BoxNitori is adorable, and her tank is amazingly well thought out and executed. Gpop's BoxEiki with SlavesFace and LEGS was great, and as mentioned, the details on her outfit (a pretty tough one, I think) were very well done... And how can I even begin to describe the wonderful job you did with BoxRuro? I'm glad I have no need to judge these because I love them both~<3
