Title: (Nonspellcard characters) They had spellcards, what would they be called?
Post by: Irate Researchers on April 12, 2012, 06:49:35 AM
I'm curious about non-spellcard system characters in Touhou (and Seihou.)

What kind of spellcard names would you think they'd use for their signature attacks?

Non-spellcard system characters? Do you mean those like Momiji/Koakuma/Lily etc?
edit: silly me, Momiji had spellcards defined in Double Spoiler.

The first thought that came to my mind personally was the PC-98 cast.

Kurumi seems to like interacting with the walls of the screen, and is purportedly a vampire. Her attacks are pretty notable and memorable, so I'll do my best to think of some names for them.

Kurumi's first phase (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=A4gETEv9o2s#t=315s)- Bat Sign "Echolocation"
Named for the reverberating effects of the beams, from which bullets home in on the player.

Kurumi's second phase (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=A4gETEv9o2s#t=331s)- Lake Sign "Fish-Eating Bat"
Named for the appearance of Kurumi diving up and down, causing water waves to spread out.

Kurumi's third phase (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=A4gETEv9o2s#t=341s)- Bat Sign "Devil's Cannon"
You can't see much of the attack here, but it seems to be a modified version of Echolocation with multiple beams fired at the walls.

Kurumi's fourth phase (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=A4gETEv9o2s#t=350s)- Bat Sign "Vampire's Fangs"
Named from the small, "Double bullets" that resemble fangs.

Ah thanks to iK's post I suddenly understand. The PC98 era indeed.

Indeed.  Things like that.

I guess some kind of got names in the Windows era, like Master Spark, Reflowering of Gensokyo, Earthlight Ray, Stardust Reverie, etc.

I don't think I can come up with good ones myself. I wonder what people might call Gengetsu's laser though. They've named the other "sparks," even making one up for Mima, so I'm actually kind of surprised Gengetsu's doesn't have a popular fan name.

Because it was overshadowed by raeptiem.

Yumeko would have spellcards named after ancient swords: Excalibur, Kikuichimonji, Tyrfing, Mysteltainn, etc.

I wonder if Shinki would have "true" named versions of her attacks.

Since Byakuren uses "Devil's Recitation"  Would Shinki's be "Devil's Speech?"

How about "Diabolic Invocation" for the "true" version of Devil's Recitation?

...Hmmm, I used to have an awful lot of fun with coming up with spellcard names for PC-98ers... Let's see if I can think of any good ones later.

Yumeko would have spellcards named after ancient swords: Excalibur, Kikuichimonji, Tyrfing, Mysteltainn, etc.
...And that would make me apply Gilgamesh's personality to Yumeko even more than I already do, ahah. >..

For Yumeko... it's morphing time! What would Yumeko morph into though?

Was actually thinking Nasuverse Gilgamesh, but this is so much better.

...A shame that Exdeath's personality doesn't really fit Shinki, though.

No, the important question is: who is Enkidu?

anyhow, back to business.

Rika would probably have spellcards listed as "Weapon System: _________"  or the like, I'd imagine.

I like to think Yumemi's spellcards would be based on Judeo-Christian imagery and relics, such as the Lance of Longinus and the Holy Grail.

I can imagine Rikako would have her danmaku patterns based on scientific concepts. Depending on her field, this could include things like reflection and refraction for physics, mitosis and cell behavior for biology, and molecular/ionic behavior for chemistry.

Physics: Large Hadron Collider

so vivit uses these attacks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyLJ1bao-rU& (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyLJ1bao-rU&)

In phases too, just like spellcards.

Suffice to say, she'd be a nightmare to fight in touhou...
