It's much cooler than boring-ass logic. But 'not sensing theor physical presence' isn't quite accurate either. It's more like, you took them for granted, that they had slipped your mind. Like how people take their own breathing for granted sometimes. You find yourself a little surprised at being surprised to see your wings.
