There was something here once. Wonder what...

>Do we hear anything?
>If this has anything to do with that 'vision...'

>From outside, you can hear the cheerleading squad practicing, but that's about it, really.
>If whatever Utsuho is hearing is connected to your experience, there's no way to tell by looking at her.

>"Just the cheerleaders. What do you hear?"

>Utsuho's face strains, her eyes closed to let her listen better. "It's a.... a bird, I- I think, it's... I think it's a bird. But it's not like..." She falls silent then, then opens her eyes, her look one of someone far away. "It's gone."

>"Was it an unusual bird? I wouldn't think just hearing a bird would be very distracting..."

>Utsuho's head drifts sideways slightly, her face a mystery. "It wasn't like any bird I'd ever heard before." Her voice has changed, too; deeper, more mysterious, somehow. "It was something I'd never even heard of before. Something that belonged in the sky, but swallowed the stars. It sounded like midnight, like fire trapped behind a veil of darkness. Infinite darkness...."

>Give the surrounding area a wary look.

>The sunlight streaming in from the window appears to be just that - ordinary sunlight. The only sound to be heard is the yelling of the cheerleaders, nothing out of place there. There are no dolls either in the window facing outside, nor the small window in the door. Your pillow is still comfy. So far as you can determine, the only thing out of place is Utsuho's admittedly creepy speech.

>"Perhaps you shouldn't leave immediately. This sounds...very disturbingly akin to what I felt.

>A shadow seems to pass over Utsuho's face, then she blinks, and looks at you again, all traces of her strange expression gone. "What you felt when?" Her voice is completely normal, as well.

>"Unyuu?" Utsuho closes her eyes for a moment, apparantly listening. "All I hear is the cheerleaders. But then again, everyone within miles can probably hear them, thanks to Miss Kasodani. Is that what you mean?"

>"Because I heard you say my name, and then you started talking about what you were feeling when you fell down the stairs." She frowns herself now. Seems to be going around. "Are you sure you're okay? Headache not getting any worse, any double vision?"

>Your assurances of your health status serve only to soften the nurse's frown, rather than dispel it completely. "If it will make you feel better, then,  no, I don't remember anything between those two things. And I assure you, I haven't struck my head against anything solid recently, from any height, if that was your next question."
>"Now, if there's nothing else you want from me, I have a couple of calls to make, and I suggest you get some sleep."

>Unlike your previous statement, that remark completely wipes away Utsuho's frown, leaving an expression you can best describe as bafflement. "You fall down a full flight of stairs, your doctor can't determine why... and you're worried about me?"

>Utsuho's expression remains unchanged for a few moments, then a warm smile crosses her face. "Any day of the week, Byakuren. And none's even better."
>With a friendly nod, Utsuho departs.

>Rest up for now.

>You lie back down. Whoever did the inventory for this school did a very good job; this is really a comfortable bed. You find yourself drifting off as the sounds of the cheerleading squad dissipate.
>Some time later your eyes flutter open, finding you've rolled onto your side. The first thing you notice is that your head feels much better. In fact, you feel wonderful, none of the usual grogginess of the morning, no pains anywhere. You'd expect it to be somewhat darker, but if anything it's brighter than when you woke, with an odd light filling the room. It's different somehow than dawn, or early morning. Like white light, almost, but not hard on the eyes at all.
>You hear the sound of feathered wings rustling softly behind you.

>Look back.

>You roll over enough to turn your head, giving you a look at the source of the sound. Probably just Utsuho again.
>It is not Utsuho. It is in fact Marissa sitting by your bed, though she's wearing her hair differently. Instead of her normal braided part of the left side of her hair, she has a ponytail on the right side of her head. She's smiling gently at you, an expression that seems... quite different on her. Even her smallest smiles are better described as grins.
>Perhaps stranger are the pair of wings she now sprouts. Midnight black they are, blacker even than Utsuho's, but each feather is tipped with white.

>You gape at the young woman before you for a moment. Her expression remains unchanged as you rise up. In fact, nothing happens at all around you, terrible or otherwise.

>"...Marisa?"

>"Marissa... Yes, that is her name, isn't it. I wasn't sure of that; you have so many faces in your heart, so many names."

>"And who are you, exactly? How long have you been here?"

>'Marissa' throws her head back and laughs heartily.
>"'How long have I been here....' This world changed global calenders no less than four times after I got old. ... Or was it five? It's so hard to watch this place sometimes, at least for me. And time was never my friend. From your point of view, I may have always been here. Or I may not be born yet. Time was our enemy's speciality, not mine."
>"I had to borrow another face to be here. Even in this place, I am denied so much." She reaches up to the side of her head, and touches her ponytail lightly. "This doesn't seem quite right, though. Does she always wear her hair like this?"
