There is a possibility that this isn't a "just" enough death for it to stick, since Vriska only killed one of the trolls Terezi thought she did, and "preemptive justice" isn't. Also, Vriska's blood stained the sun on her shirt

But basically if I understand correctly, the purpose of this segment was to see Terezi's ability in action. It appears that when she needs to make a decision, she can flip a coin and create two alternate timelines, witness the results of both, and pick the better one.

Also geez it looks like Vriska + Aradia could probably beat Jack no problem :|

Actually, for all we know, the Homestuck kids launched this plan specifically so Jack would be in reach of Aradia and Vriska for a Beatdown x2 COMBO.

This makes a whole lot more sense with Doc Scratch's dialog, and kinda removes my idea that this whole thing was pointless.
