Author Topic: Touhou Project 12.5 - ダブルスポイラー ~ Double Spoiler. A spoiling article, ayaya  (Read 156871 times)

Lucarius

I looked at said translations on the wiki. I found 3(?) likes. I think none of them are necessary. Rather, I don't see much of any difference between her manner of speech and Aya's, at least from what I saw on the wiki. Perhaps she sounds a bit younger than Aya, but nothing to the extent that requires the "like" interjection.

Was it already fixed? There seems to be very few, or I'm just missing an article or something.

I'm probably missing an article or something.

Hieda no Aya

  • I see you remodeled.
Goodness, a bit of a fuss.

It's reasonable to have concerns about the accuracy of translation from time to time, but on all sides of the issue let's be fair here: the reason this particular case caught people's attention is that the valley girl speak, besides having strong negative connotations, is intrusive and to many people really annoying to read. The average reader on an English site will never think anything of a translation that's inaccurate but pleasant -- how could they? But people reading stuff that's annoying to read want to be damn sure they're being annoyed for a good reason. And rightfully so, to be honest.

I'm probably missing an article or something.
It's the spellcard translations for Hatate's victory comments.  The showdown between her and Aya seems pretty straight on from my (admitedly limited) knowledge of the two languages.

Most of the interjections from existing comments have already been taken out. There were a lot more before.

There was a minimum of two "like, " interjections from each comment before.  :ohdear:

Her verbal ticks show up less in actual conversations, but when she's talking to herself about the photo comments, they are more prevalent.

This:

Primary: original work
Secondary: original work translated by someone who knows the language
Tertiary: original work translated by someone who knows the work off of a translated work by someone who knows the language

Crucial in all meanings of the term, translation.

*snip*
Perhaps I'm reading your post wrong (and maybe my post was a tad ambiguous), but tertiary doesn't apply to what I was describing.  The editor (unless they also speak the source language) shouldn't be retranslating anything, instead they use their knowledge of the target language (which is usually native to them) to edit or re-write any lines that the translator gave them that are rough around the edges in order to make them more readable while retaining the same meaning.  Naturally they shouldn't be taking too much liberty with this, like one sub from the first episode of Haruhi's second season where Kyon's question about the time machine ended up referencing a Delorean (a specific time machine from Back to the Future).

Even native speakers can benefit from someone checking their work, which is one of the reasons why virtually all authors have an editor go through their work before it is published.  You're more likely to miss mistakes in something you wrote yourself (this also applies to software :V)

By the way, I didn't know that tertiary sources were being used to translate this for the Western. It explains why I find all of these inaccuracies all over the place. I already find secondary sources to be unreliable under many circumstances, including my own translations.
While not related to the games, I can tell you that there are some people who translate anime and will either make shit up or get things so horribly wrong that you'd be hard pressed to tell that they didn't.  Here is one blog post where someome critiques the job done by one person who did just that.  Features Japanese and two different English translations

There are also some people who will go the tertiary route and translate from a Chinese translation...those are never pretty.
Cheating? I cannot even wrap my head around the point of it. Wouldn't you know you had cheated? How on Earth could you maintain crisp certainty of your superiority to all others? And if you're unable to do that, what's the point of anything?

Much better now. "Like"  doesn't appear every couple of words now, so sentence flow isn't too disjointed. Good use of "totally" and "way" though to still go for that feel, I suppose.

Just try to skip all the "like, " when reading them.  :V

Oh. Ok.

Reading a few of them, yeah, I see where the likes and totallys came from, though I don't know exactly how abundant they were before.

"Like" and "totally" don't quite fit with the dialogue style I'm getting from the original text, but I can't think of anything better either. Based on placement, I guess "totally" doesn't sound bad, but I wish I could do something about using ", like," because it's too annoying for the way she actually sounds.

Well, now that I know what you all were talking about, I had nothing to say in the first place~
I was quite stupid for joining a discussion I knew nothing about.

Being originally from SoCal (and therefore superior to you all, as southern California is the center of the universe), I can testify to the fact that, like, you can reflexively, like, tone out all that, like, valley girl speak without even realizing it. Totally.

No, seriously, I think you guys need to cool down and :dwi:, it really does just fade into the background. I'm just being Nobu's personal troll right now. Though I do agree that too many useless words does disrupt the flow of a sentence-- but if that's really how Hatate speaks, then :suwakodwi:. I've translated enough stuff myself to know that translation convention is just as much of an art as it is a discipline, but we've got enough translators around that I think they can handle the burden. Totally.

I agree its easy to tone out all those interjections in speech, but really hard to do when you're reading it from text. And it has a comma! that's telling me to pause at every. single. line.  :ohdear:

[03:34] lumberofthebeast: ...now I have the mental image of Aya doing an annual panties expos? issue, with nothing but the pantyshots she's gotten over the last year. It's invariably the best-selling issue in its year, though no one is willing to admit to having bought it except Yuyuko for some reason. And, every issue, there's a few girls who are posing for it.
[03:35] [REDACTED]: If pressed, Sakuya will admit to reading it...Meiling's copy.
[03:37] lumberofthebeast: Patchouli has a complete, pristinely-preserved collection which she is certain no one knows about. Of course, both Koakuma and Remilia know about it. Sakuya has failed to notice, though.
[03:38] [REDACTED]: If she was actually asked about it, they'd find out that she actually doesn't care that much for them, she just collects books.
[03:38] lumberofthebeast: Koakuma, on the other hand.... peeks from time to time.
[03:39] lumberofthebeast: She's a succubus, she can't help it
[03:41] [REDACTED]: Rumia keeps trying to read them in private, and failing for the usual reason.
[03:41] [REDACTED]: She'll sometimes drop them while in her darkness-sphere, and Aya will sell them back to her again.  It's like free money!
[03:42] lumberofthebeast: Youmu is terribly embarrased, because she's the one that gets sent out to buy Yuyuko's copy each year. And, despite Yuyuko admitting to reading it specifically because she's a bit of a perv, few ever believe Youmu's claim that she's buying it for her Mistress. (And those that do get an even more embarrasing mental image, since Youmu refers to her as her mistress.)
[03:44] [REDACTED]: It's not very popular in hell, though; Okuu doesn't get it, the Satoris can peek whenever they want, and Rin can't convince Satori to spare the cash for one.
[03:46] lumberofthebeast: Kaguya torrents it the next day.
[03:47] [REDACTED]: Marisa just grabs Patchy's copies.
[03:47] lumberofthebeast: Nitori has every issue, but it's actually to study the design of underwear in Gensokyo so she can improve upon it.
[03:48] lumberofthebeast: Hina's never been in it - Aya's tried, but every time it looks like she's got a clear shot something gets in the way.
[03:49] [REDACTED]: Reimu buys it when she can, but it keeps getting stolen.  Probably by Yukari
[03:49] lumberofthebeast: Or by Suika.
[03:49] lumberofthebeast: Kogasa is planning to try showing someone their own picture while saying "Surprise!"
[03:52] [REDACTED]: She keeps choosing the ones that are posing.
[03:52] lumberofthebeast: Shou was very embarrased to be featured in the most recent issue, but since Byakuren teasingly complimented her on her apparent affection for lace, she's actually started quietly trying to attract Aya's attention again.
[03:55] lumberofthebeast: In the same issue, Nue appeared, back to the camera, removing her dress, and sticking her tongue out at the camera from over her shoulder. Turns out she likes lace too, but black as opposed to Shou's white.
[03:57] [REDACTED]: Much was made of this, and the pair have gotten the unofficial nickname "Yin-Yang"
[04:00] lumberofthebeast: Hatate is planning to sneak into the printing press next year and slip a picture of Aya's panties into the final draft. Momiji is helping.
[04:05] lumberofthebeast: One year, it wasn?t released on time because the building where the issue was being printed got burned down. There was allegedly a threat to turn Aya into yakitori seared into one wall. Incidentally, Mokou has never been featured in it.

Stop acting like localization is the devil. Would half of the Nintendo games be nearly as memorable if they didn't take liberties with some of the characters and how they talked? How about the Ace Attorney games or the Disgaea games (barring the typos in the latter's games which wasn't even really their fault anyway)?

Seriously, lighten up a bit. Yes, the initial drafts were going overboard, but c'mon, if you didn't imagine Hatate being some kind of trendy "girly girl" after seeing her picture, I don't know what else to say, because that's obviously what ZUN was going for. Go back to playing serious business games or whatever.

I opened her portrait inside the DAT file and the first impression I got (before even reading her profile) was:
- Bitchy attitude on her face
- Young girl with bling bling phone (current age stylish girl culture)
- Nice skirt
- lolTengu rival thinking she is better

So... is it okay to make the comparison to 4kids translations... ?   :ohdear:

Like that thread about "If 4kids localized touhou" or something.
