A Simple Question of Concentration
« on: December 21, 2009, 08:43:18 PM »
Okay. I try to play Touhou games, I really do.

But, inevitably, around stage... 3 or 4, my mind goes off to Flandre's basement, and suffers the same fate.

So, does anyone have tips on staying focused?

Either try to find a way to stay focused (on the game), or pause to take a break.

Win.

But the problem is, I also fail at break-taking.

Because I'll come back, totally relaxed, and get murdered in a few short seconds.

Protip: When you get angry, stop playing. You'll only fail more.

For the record, most of my real accomplishments came on the fifteenth or twentieth run, after usually at least an hour of RAGE and restarts, so...I dunno, don't give up?

I DID clear EoSD after bashing my head against a wall.

Meaning no offense, it's probably not that you're losing concentration - but that you haven't developped the concentration needed for the later levels... yet.  Don't worry about constantly restarting or trying to perfect stuff just yet.  For now, worry about going as far as you can - and when you screw up and game over, just hit continue and keep going.  Facing down the tough stuff and getting used to what there is to face will make dealing with the easy stuff... well... easier.

Eh, that's true. I guess I just concentrate too much on the wrong stuff...

Like... Miyuki Takara?

EDIT: I meant that I was comparing myself to her. Not that I concentrate on her while playing.

Even I have limits.

I would recommend trying to play other shmups, they may be frustrating but the mental exercise they provide can be more rewarding, more fun. Recommendations:

- Battle Garegga (if you get good enough, you'll start using specific option formations and bomb sceneries/enemies for score, besides chaining medals and dodging bullets. It's an exercise in how to maintain control over a game)
- Dodonpachi (helps you maintain control over the stage, and the enemies, so that you're not ultimately cornered and forced to bomb. Also another game that exercises control over the situation, before you can try to play for score. Oh, you'll also feel much more awake if you try to maintain the Maximum Bombs bonus)
- ESP Ra.De (yet another good game that allows you to think and try to manage the stages)
- Giga Wing (the bosses will become more difficult later, but the stages allow you to charge the Reflect Barrier on anticipation, and to use the bombs on reaction, if needed)
- Varth (a game that has enemies coming from behind, and enemies that flat out shot gun you, mercilessly. But if you get used to them, the bombing mechanic and the item pickup invulnerability, the game feels enjoyable, exciting, it demands your attention to stay alive, and the BGM helps too!)

I'd say Raiden Fighters Jet and Thunder Dragon 2 as well.. (out of ideas for now, and must go eat now :D)
neku: now for something important.
Translations.
How much time do you guys think it will take for HM to be translated? Besides everyone's story modes and the whole menus, there's also the fact that the way HM's programmed is different from all other games. I bet it'll take two months.

lusvik: I don't mind about playing HM in japanese. The language of punching other people is international.

I find that my concentration slips a lot too. I start to lose it (my concentration, not my sanity) around the third stage. I can't even 1cc normal because of it. So I moved up to lunatic in hopes of being able to concentrate and read spell cards better (ohjesuswhathaveidone).

Flip it around. You want to play stages 1,2 and 3 until they become trival, then use your concentration for 4,5 and 6.

YMMV though.

Frustration is absolutely the worst state to play Touhou in. Learn to laugh at your clipdeaths, hum along with the music, comment aloud on the game, whatever.
That sort of stuff really helps to stay 1) concentrated 2) happy.

Raocow is a good model to learn from.
"Happiness is like a cat, If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you; it will never come. But if you pay no attention to it and go about your business, you'll find it rubbing against your legs and jumping into your lap."
