Title: Webcomics
Post by: Esifex on April 21, 2011, 03:12:20 AM
Things to read on the net while you're waiting for MotK to crawl along!

Gunnerkrigg Court (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com) - the art and story starts out kinda whimpy, but it vastly improves.
Questionable Content (http://www.questionablecontent.net) - Indie music and coffee shops. Way more interesting than that sounds.
Looking For Group (http://www.lfgcomic.com) - Takes a lot from WoW, but isn't actually based in the world of Azeroth. Everyone loves Richard.
XKCD (http://www.xkcd.com) - If I have to explain this to anyone on MotK, seppekku.
Awkward Zombie (http://www.awkwardzombie.com) - Nerdiness and geekiness all wrapped up in silliness.

That's it! Just five! I've run out. SHARE MORE SO I HAVE STUFF TO READ Check them out, and if you frequent any on your lonesome, feel free to drop the links anywhere in here so the rest of us can partake.

Dinosaur Comics (http://www.qwantz.com) is my absolute, absolute favourite. Today's one is a good example of why. :D This one (http://www.qwantz.com/index.php?comic=1606), in particular, really cracked me up the first time I read it.

Oh man, a thread that I am totally qualified to post in~

Pictures for Sad Children (http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/) is delightfully silly.

So is Surviving the World (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBQQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsurvivingtheworld.net%2F&ei=CKevTbSVDYi2tgfqqeHbAw&usg=AFQjCNG3-6YbNdt0KqJe_RmQOA1t5grMPA&sig2=wiOUVpikZsZci94Kr2EUAA). And it updates daily!

Penny Arcade (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.penny-arcade.com%2F&ei=dqevTcrbB8eEtgeV4JSkBQ&usg=AFQjCNE8qo0EDRHo0lIgyusypG6s4C4BXw&sig2=GVek_lla879dTRQPaxSYAw) is a must-have.

Hang in there, Kogasa-san! on Pixiv/Danbooru is always nice, so is Rappatu's Four Seasons House.

More to come when I get around to it. Hope y'enjoy the ones posted!

Adventurers! (http://adventurers.keenspot.com/d/0001.html) finished about... Four years ago?  Maybe more, I might be remembering wrong... But it is still easily my favourite webcomic ever.  The art is kind of crude (especially at the beginning), but that's only a minor problem when the comic was that damn good.

Oh right, and before I forget... Darths & Droids, (http://www.darthsanddroids.net/episodes/0001.html) a retelling of the entire Star Wars saga as if it were a tabletop RPG campaign.  MUCH better than it sounds.  Actually makes Jar-Jar into a likeable character, which is reason enough to at least give it a try!

Also, I read Something Positive. (http://somethingpositive.net/)  Occasionally I forget to do so and my life feels no less enriched, so I imagine there's no real purpose in me doing so anymore... but it's sort of habitual, having more or less kept up with a thing on the internet for ten years or so.

There's Explosm (http://explosm.net/) (NSFW). It's kind of hit-and-miss, but some of it is really hilarious.
Also Jack (http://www.pholph.com) (way more NSFW). Well, if you like preachy, trashy stuff to laugh at, at least. :V
Jack gets rather boring after a while.

Books of Adam (http://www.booksofadam.com/) is another good one in a similar vein to that.

I'd already read everything from first to latest when I made that post. It's innocence, straight up.
What's wrong with everyone dying if it pretty much stays the same in the end?

Also, how could I forget good ol' Three Panel Soul (http://www.threepanelsoul.com)? Everything you need in a handy three-panel package. Graphic student graduate and game designers webcomic, evolved from the now-retired MacHall (http://www.machall.com).

Kid Radd is a very old webcomic (http://www.bgreco.net/kidradd.htm) that I enjoyed back in the day.

Besides that, Dinosaur Comics, Nedroid, Dr. McNinja. They've all been listed. Minus too.

More stuff from my subscriptions list: Basic Instructions (http://basicinstructions.net/) and the ever unfunny but unmissable Doghouse Diaries (http://www.thedoghousediaries.com/). There's also Almost Pets (http://www.almostpets.com) which just silently died one day, a real shame because those guys really knew how to make things look pretty.

Gone with the Blastwave (http://www.blastwave-comic.com/index.php?p=comic&nro=1) is nice, but updates are extremely rare in the last two years or so.

I guess the majority of people already know about MegaTokyo (http://megatokyo.com/strip/1), but it is too awesome not to mention.

I also like XKCD and NerfNow, but these two have already been listed.

Your lack of faith in KC Green (http://gunshowcomic.com/271) is disturbing

I also enjoy Octopus Pie (http://www.octopuspie.com/) for its carefully measured blend--like a good Starbucks coffee-style beverage--of grounded, believable characters, New York chic, and subtle absurdity (e.g. a secret society of baristas.)

In the same vein as Dinosaur Comics, which is a delight, I like Wondermark (http://wondermark.com/377/)--it's one of those wordy comics that actually uses its words really well.

I should also mention Wonderella (http://nonadventures.com/) just because it's unrelentingly silly without falling into epic-monkey-cheese land--and, somehow, makes stiff Illustrator art just work.

And finally, on the other side of the spectrum, The Abominable Charles Christopher (http://www.abominable.cc/) and Lackadaisy (http://lackadaisycats.com/) are pretty much gallery-class work and should be read by anyone with even a passing interest in art or composition
Title: Re: Webcomics
Post by: Myschi on April 21, 2011, 11:19:48 PM
My only problem with Lackadaisy is how infrequently it updates, which means I forget to check on it... :ohdear:

Speaking of infrequency! No Rest for the Wicked (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forthewicked.net%2F&ei=JbywTYWkGc2gtwfwsZWIDA&usg=AFQjCNE9OTqZfqVC0HWpPTIoZxVj9kMLYg&sig2=pgE1GR_bHCtKkM6lLc6JpA) and Ever After (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ea.snafu-comics.com%2F&ei=RLywTeXbDce5tgfNmPj_Cw&usg=AFQjCNGHNPki7vchf3ta2_z2WIrNSZCTuw&sig2=vsAbpLwQ864UF3q6T5zn1w) are some of my favorite now-dead comics.

And now I am sad and want them to not be dead...

I have fond memories of reading MacHall (http://www.machall.com/index.php) while it was still running. Their spiritual successor, Three Panel Soul (http://threepanelsoul.com/), is also good.

one that I saw long before I even knew of the comic a few years ago, that got me interested in the first place! (http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus37.html) I thought that last panel was so incredible :*
This is what got me to read Minus the first time, it's also the comic that made me realize what an unforgivably evil creature Minus is

At first glance, it's a whimsical comic about a young girl standing up to adversity.  Despite the impending doom, she readies herself with her bat, waiting to knock the coming asteroid away and save the earth.  After reading the archives, she's a selfish monster, willing to gamble the fate of the entirety of humanity.  She prepares to sacrifice everyone on the planet Earth so she can have the chance to hit an asteroid with a bat.

Fuck Minus, fuck Minus so hard.  I hate her so so so so so so SO much!

I'll get to stuff I actually read later, but for every XKCD strip that's somewhat enjoyable, the GoatKCD (http://goatkcd.com) (NWS NWS NWS NWS) is immeasurably funnier.  It's a script that replaces the last (or only) panel of every XKCD strip with Goatse, and it's utterly phenomenal is the most Dada sense.

Also:
Brawl in the Family (http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/) - Nintendo webcomics
Mistakes of Youth (http://mistakesofyouth.com/) - A webcomic for the more seasoned anime fan
Black Adventures (http://blackadventurescomic.com/) - Pokemon Gen V webcomic

What I love the most about that one comic is it unintentionally shows the power of context. Without context it seems inspiring, but when put in context you suddenly realize how horrible it is.

Classics: I've read Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com/) and Bob the Angry Flower (http://angryflower.com/) for about 10 years now and they're the only ones from back then I still read.  I started reading Boy on a Stick and Slither (http://boasas.com/) at the same time, but it's all but officially dead now.

Current: I check Toothpaste for Dinner (http://toothpastefordinner.com/) and the associated comics and SMBC (http://www.smbc-comics.com/) every day.

Others: When I remember to, I usually check Nedroid (http://nedroid.com/), Three Word Phrase (http://threewordphrase.com/), Gunshow (http://gunshowcomic.com/), Fanboys (http://fanboys-online.com/), Buttersafe (http://buttersafe.com/), Wonderella (http://nonadventures.com/), Loneliest Astronauts (http://www.agreeablecomics.com/loneliestastronauts/) and Romantically Apocalyptic (http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/)
