Title: CPSS: CLOSED! D:
Post by: Rin Kagamine on October 31, 2009, 04:24:38 PM
There will be TWO Secret Santas running this year, a traditional gift exchange and a creative exchange.  What follows will be a Cliff's Notes of the rules, followed by the actual rules in the next post.

Brief rules
You can sign up for either one of the Secret Santas, or you can sign up for both.  To sign up, PM me using the formats explained in the next post.

Gift Exchange: The deadline to sign up is Friday, November 20th.  You will receive you partner on or before Monday, November 23rd.  Try to mail out your package during the first week of December.  If you use a shipper with a tracking number, PM it to me and I will forward it to your partner.  Gifts do not have to cost a lot of money, but please put some thought into your choices to make them appropriate to your partner.

Failure to send a package will result in a PERMABAN.

Creative Exchange: Deadline to sign up is Friday, November 20th.  Partners will be assigned starting on the 18th.  You are allowed to participate more than once.  You may request a new partner after you have completed a work for your current partner.  Anything is eligible to send to your partner, provided it demonstrates some degree of creativity and appropriateness for your partner.  Final works should be delivered to your partner in a way that does not expose who you are, preferably through a proxy.

In either exchange, gifts received will be posted in the appropriate threads.

See full rules below for further explanation.

If you have any questions at all you can:
-post them here
-PM me
-e-mail me at last.hope.for.mankind |at| gmail |dot| com
-message me on MSN: last.hope.for.mankind
-message me on AIM: lasthopevicviper

This should be a lot of fun this year guys, so be cool and participate.

Official Shrine Maiden Madiens Of The Kaleidoscope Cirno's Perfect Math Classroom Aya's Perfect Math Tutoring Session Secret Santa Rules

Hi guys, welcome to the OSMMOTKCPMCAPMTSSSR, glad you could join us.  I am, of course, the Last Hope for Internet Christmas, Vic Viper and I'll be running this little show this year.

First off, we will be running TWO different Secret Santas this year: A traditional gift exchange, and a newfangled ?Creative Exchange?.  You participate in either one or both if you like.

If you want to participate in the gift exchange, you need to PM me, Vic Viper, the following:

Subject line: CPSS Gift
Real name (first and last):
Home/mailing/real address:
Willing to ship international?
Willing to receive subjective material (porn Touhou H-doujins)?
*Phone number (Optional to me, required for international shipping)
*(If you ship internationally then you will need to give your phone number. The US Post Office has new requirements for international shipping and one of them is that a phone number is required. Feel free to make one up but don?t cry to me when your package doesn?t arrive/isn?t delivered.)

***If you don't post very much, or are worried because no one knows who you are, include some things that you're into with this PM (anime, cars, Kurt Vonnegut, w/e) and I will pass that information on to your partner.***

If you want to participate in the Creative Exchange, PM me the following:

Subject line: CPSS CE
Your real first name:
Your usual forum name/what people call you around here:
5 likes and 1-3 dislikes:

If you want to participate in both, PM me the following:

Subject line: CPSS COOL GUY
Real name (first and last)
Your usual forum name/what people call you around here
Home/mailing/real address
Willing to ship international?
Willing to receive subjective material?
5 likes and 1-3 dislikes:
*Phone number:

If you have questions at any point, PM, email or message me on AIM or MSN.

Rules for the Gift Exchange
DO NOT sign up unless you are TOTALLY committed to doing this.  Failure to send a package will result in a PERMABAN!  If something should happen in your life and you can't something out, PM me so we can work something out.

The deadline for signing up will be Friday, November 20th.  That's three weeks from now, no excuses for not signing up by then and trying to sign-up late.

I will PM you your partner's information on or before Monday, November 23rd.

This will probably be a busy time for shipping packages, so try to ship out by the first week of December.  You can use whatever shipping company and method you want, but I suggest using one that gives you a tracking number.

If you get a tracking number for your gift you can PM it to me, along with the shipping company, and I can send that along to your partner.

On your gift, I suggest only putting down your last name for the return address.  Part of the appeal of the Secret Santa is the secret, so try not to spoil the surprise.

We have a lot of international users on this forum, so if you can ship internationally, please say you can.  You may not have to, but you can't change your partner once they have been assigned, so be sure you can ship internationally if you sign-up for it.

What should I send?
Anything you want.  The objective of this is to send things that your partner will especially appreciate instead of just generic presents.  You can send things from around the house, make things just for them, or go out and buy something if you want.  You don't need to spend a lot on gifts if you buy, around $10USD should be sufficient.  Creativity and thoughtfulness is the key here.  Part of the fun is trying to guess who sent your package based on what you received.  Senders can give hints, but please don't spoil who you are.

Mailing a picture of yourself, signed or otherwise, or a holiday card as your only gift is NOT sufficient; that's for the Creative Exchange.

Once you receive your package, you can wait until Christmas to open it if you like, but once you open it post what you received in the thread.  Pictures of the items are encouraged.

Direct any questions you have my way.

Creative Exchange rules
From here on referred to as CE, this is based not on sending material goods, but on creating something for your partner, be it a poem, a song, a short story, a picture, w/e.

The deadline for signing up for this is also Friday, November 20th.  No sign-ups will be accepted after the 20th, but in order to encourage repeated creativity, I will start sending out partners on Wednesday, November 18th.  You can participate as much as you want, but you must complete your current partner before you can take a new one.

Once I send you your partner, you can get started on your masterpiece creation.  There are no size restrictions on what you decide to do: you can write a single haiku (a dick move, but it's something) or you could write the Next Great American Novel as a Touhou fanfiction (I'll laugh at you, but send it along anyway).

Once you finish with whatever you decide to do, PM me to tell me what you did (just say song, poem, etc.) and that you've finished.  From here, you have several options to get your work to you partner.  You can either:
Send it along as an attachment to me through e-mail or PM, and I will forward it to your partner.  **Preferred**
Send it directly to them (spoils the surprise)
Mailing it to them.  Let me know in your PM that you want to do this; I will ask your partner for their address, but they may not give it to you.

Once your work has been sent to your partner, I will assign you a new partner if you would like one.  You can only have one partner at a time, and you cannot get a new partner until you finish your submission for the current partner.

Please post whatever you receive in the thread, so we can all bask in the collective brilliance of the forum.

Failure to send anything to your partner will result in a punishment, ranging from public humiliation to probation/unfunny.  Don't sign up if you aren't committed to participating.

I hope these rules are clear enough.  If you have any questions, ask me.

?FAQ?
I don't understand.  Why can't I send a signed photo of myself as my only gift for the gift exchange?
Because that's narcissistic and shows a lack of thoughtfulness.  That's an acceptable contribution for the CE, though we might all laugh at you for it.  If you have to send that, combine it with something else.

I drank too much ChiruMiru and I still don't understand.
Let me provide an example of what we're going for here.  Let's suppose I get Letty Whiterock as my partner.

If it was for the gift exchange then I might send him: a sock hat/toque, a small rock I spray-painted white, a snowglobe, a whole mess of paper snowflakes and/or the latest volume(s) of the Hayate manga.  I would do that because I know he likes Hayate, and all the other gifts are based around winter/Letty and I think he might appreciate it.

I could also be off the wall and send him: a new pack of socks, a highly inappropriate/ill-fitting T-shirt and my vinyl copy of Thriller.  He'd know it was me because only I would be that dumb.

If I got him for the CE, then I might: draw him a picture of Letty and Cirno, draw Letty and Nanael flying the Vic Viper, write a short story about Letty doing something, or mail him the afore-mentioned paper snowflakes.  Things don't have to be original; I could just as easily rewrite a scene from Pyramus and Thisby to be about Strike Witches.  The point is to make something for your partner, not just because you can.

.....
The point of the CE is to show some ?originality? and make something, from scratch or otherwise.  If you want to make a bunch of ?hilarious? lolcats for your partner, go nuts.  Just know that, unless it's super personal, it'll be posted in the thread so we can all see and we will probably make fun of you unless your lolcats are actually hilarious.

Wanna make an incredible new version of Klimt's ?The Kiss? with Alice and Marisa?  Go nuts.  Want to badly photoshop Flandre's head onto the Mona Lisa?  Have fun.  Please keep in mind that the goal is to create something for your partner.  If you want to just make something new and post it straight to the thread, that's totally fine, but don't neglect your partner.

I don't want to give out my address because I'm afraid you'll break into my house and repaint every room a horrible orange color!
For the gift exchange, the only two people who will ever see your address will be myself and your partner; no one else will know it.  If you still don't want to give out your home address, then I'll need an address that you check for mail daily.  Work addresses are fair game, as long as they're going directly to you.  PO boxes are also acceptable, so long as you're checking them every day.  Your neighbor's house, or your parent's house that you'll only visit once a month are not acceptable.  I'm trying to avoid packages being taken by someone else/sitting around for a week before you finally get around to picking it up.

Cool, let's have fun guys, and be sure to ask if you have any questions.

I would think one of the bigger concerns for people that do this is gathering clues as to what their partner is interested in receiving.  :-
Welcome to every Secret Santa ever.

That's pretty much the point of a Secret Santa, to find out what you think will be appropriate, or deciding to just go with something random!  It tends to work pretty well on a smaller forum like this, because people tend to know everyone else better than on a larger forum (or outside of CPMC on this forum).  Some people just seem happy to any gift though.

Though if I do this, I'm giving my work address not my house address.  I don't want you people knowing where I live -_-

It wouldn't be "you people," it'd be two people: Vic and the person sending you things.

For CE, does it have to be a poem, or just a literary work?
If its the latter, I just had a marvelous idea.

I'll edit the rules with this, but the only people seeing your address would be myself and your partner, they will never leave the board.

If people are still uncomfortable with that for whatever reason, I'll need an address that you check the mail for daily.  Work is fine, a PO box you check Monday through Friday is also fine; the address for your parents house that you only go to once a month is not acceptable.

Can our secret santa gift be a danmakufu script?

For the CE, I suppose it can.  Try to make it about your partner, or their favorite Touhou character I suppose.

It can be whatever you want it to be.

I know what I'll be giving if I do participate, but it's part of a work in progress so I can't be certain it'll be totally done for the 20th. I'll definitely try to enter anyways, just saying I probably won't enter until like the 17th, if I will in fact enter.

As long as the person is in North America I think things should be okay. I'll probably just give the address I'm at right now as opposed to the permanent address.

You can send the package whenever you want, the 20th is just the deadline to sign-up for the exchange.  I suggested sending off the packages in the first week of December to give them a better chance of arriving before Christmas.

As long as the person is in North America I think things should be okay. I'll probably just give the address I'm at right now as opposed to the permanent address.
Then just say "no" to the "willing to ship internationally" on the application.  I'll be making two groups: those that don't want to ship internationally and everyone else.  As long as it's an address you check the mail at regularly (daily is nice) you can give whatever address you want.

Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed with the turn-out so far. There was another forum where we did a Secret Santa thing and even though there were less members in that forum than this one, almost everyone participated so it was a success. People are worried about far too much which is kind of surprising. It's supposed to be a fun thing.

I had the haiku in there because, in my mind, if you really couldn't be bothered to write a simple haiku, how would you be able to complete anything else for the CE.

If that's really the case, someone say something and I'll take that requirement out.

I am too egotistical and worried that I'll spend too much/too little or know absolutely nothing about the person (even though I'm on CPMC all the time), and worried that the person will know nothing about me (with my extreme amount of lurking and not posting). There's also the whole "Hey parents, I'm going to ship this gift to someone I sortof know from the internet." discussion I don't want to have.

Okay, I'm entering. Too many people not entering and the title change made me look. I'm not totally done (and probably won't be by December), but my gift is sufficient enough to give at pretty much any time.

That, and the title change made me swoop into the thread.

Title: Re: CPSS: CALL NOW and we'll TRIPLE THE AMOUNT! (new changes)
Post by: Rin Kagamine on November 10, 2009, 05:37:55 PM
After some discussion, I decided to make a few changes to the application requirements.

Firstly, IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR GIFT EXCHANGE!
If you ship internationally then you will need to give your phone number. The US Post Office has new requirements for international shipping and one of them is that a phone number is required. Feel free to make one up but don?t cry to me when your package doesn?t arrive/isn?t delivered.

You don't have to send me your number.  If you do, it will not go to your partner.  Main point is: have a phone number.  I don't need it but my government does :neverforget:

Secondly, NOT QUITE AS IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR CE!
I am making an REQUIRED addition to the application.  In addition to the current requirements, submit 5 things you like/interests as well as 1-3 dislikes.  Same reasoning as with the Gift exchange, some people might not know you as well as others on the forum, and this can help insure we get some decent contributions.

Note: you do not have to make something according to what your partner likes; this is only here in case you find yourself stuck.

Third, FAIRLY UNIMPORTANT!
I considered taking T-shirt sizes in the Gift Exchange app, but ruled it out due to size differences around the world (I wear an L in the US easily, but a Japanese XL is a squeeze, and European sizes are a crapshoot).  I also like to imagine that it will be more amusing this way.

Basically, if you want to tell me your T-shirt size you can, but at this point I am not going to require it.

The new applications look like this:

I'll be PMing everyone who already applied directly for this missing information.

OK I WANT IN BUT FIRST

I have a question for Vic and others for N-Forza :V

Vic: Could I like, get something from Japan via our beloved friend N-Forza, if he's okay with it, of course, and have it shipped directly from there to the person I'm giving the gift?
Taxes in my country are absurd, and would make it impossible for me to take part.

N-Forza: Is it possible to get something japanese, cheap and cool/cute for like 50 dollars, including shipping?

I tend to think all my ideas are stupid :V

Yeah, that's a question for N-Forza's thread, because that's not how a Secret Santa works.

Secret Santa is when you are randomly assigned a partner, and you will put things in a box and ship it to them; someone else will do the same for you, and you will have no idea who is sending your package.  It seems like you're just trying to buy something.

You didn't get it. Shipping stuff in and out of Brazil is a pain in the a**.
Stupid protecionism, etc.  What I thought of doing is picking whatever I want to give to my randomly assigned partner, who will most likely not live in Brazil, and send it directly to him/her, without having to import it first or buying it here.
It's really hard to find japanese stuff here, and even if I did, it would be too expensive to be rational.
It does not defeat the purpose of the Secret Santa.

You can't choose what you want.  You can give suggestions and maybe your partner will get them for you, but there's no guarantee that you'll get anything you want.

It's up to the partner.  Personally I think it spoils the spirit of Secret Santa, but I'm not exactly opposed to it.  I just don't want to be held responsible if the partner doesn't ship exactly what the other wants.

Additionally, what he's asking seems more appropriate for a buying thread than a gifting thread.  I also don't understand why getting something as a gift is better than buying and shipping it, wouldn't taxes/customs have to be paid on it in either case?

You still didn't get it, did you Vic?
What I'm saying is, I buy online or with N-Forza's help, and shhip to my partner. He/she will still not know who he/she's getting the gift from, and nor will I. It doesn't change abything at all, except the fact that I won't have to afford over 160% of taxes, and my partner won't have to wait from one day to 3 months because of shitty brazillian customs office.

Deictics failure...

The receiver still won't know who or what is sent. Instead of the sender sending their gift manually, the place they buy from does the sending. Like buying flowers.

Wait wait, you're shipping from online to your partner?  If that's the case then knock yourself out.  Your previous posts led me to believe you wanted your partners to ship things to you.

Those are two completely different things, be more clear next time  :P

I meant I ship from online or Japan to my partner.
The opposite wouldn't have made sense from the start, since I'd be paying double shipping and customs taxes anyway.

I always assumed that a Secret Santa was sort of semi-secret. It wouldn't be outright OBVIOUS who you got paired to, but from what you got you could make a decent guess.

I guess I need to say this:

**IF YOU ARE GOING TO SEND YOUR PACKAGE TO YOUR PARTNER FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE, I DO NOT CARE!!!  IT JUST HAS TO ARRIVE AT YOUR PARTNER OR YOU WILL BE PERMABANNED!!!**

What this means is: If you want to buy something online, like from Amazon, and have it sent to your partner, go crazy.  Just tell me that you did it and give me a tracking number, just like with everyone else.  It doesn't affect me (and why should it) but should it not arrive you'll be permabanned just the same.

Any questions?

I have no interest in a Secret Santa. Never have, never will.

I also haven't posted because I think trying to run a Secret Santa on a website is fundamentally flawed for two reasons:

- Secret Santas require a group of people that know each well enough to know what would be a good gift and what would be a bad gift. We may socialize off and on but we don't spend every day together, so we don't know each other as well we could. What if you buy candy for a diabetic, for example?
- Secret Santas require a group of people that have easy access to actually getting the gift from the giver to the receiver. That is notably not the case with a world-wide spread of internet forumites.

If you think you can overcome these hurdles, then more power to you for running this thing, but I'm just not interested.

Who the hell would send candy overseas? :V
Also, cool because of good intentions. If I were diabetic and some guy sent me candy, actually thinking I'd find it cool, hey I'd find it cool.
And picking a gift one knows the other would like is really easy for us, considering it's a Touhou community, and it's members all tend to like Touhou.

That was already nicely organized by our friend Vic.

I don't fault anyone for not wanting to participate, nor would I expect anyone to have to come up with an 'excuse' if they chose not to.

That said, it'd still be nice if we had a lot of people doing this. But hey, even if it's just a small number of people who choose to participate, it's still going to be fun for us, right?

Really all I want is feedback.  I used excuses as a catch-all term, but since this is my first experience running a Secret Santa, I wanted feedback not only on rules, but what people thought about Secret Santas, issues they had, why they would or wouldn't enter it, things of that nature so that I could try and accommodate them.  When I first made the thread, I was fairly disappointed at the lack of interest there seemed to be.  There seemed to be at least a fair amount of interest in some kind of inter-forum activity, so I thought up the Creative Exchange in an attempt to bring in more of the user-base.  I had been very enthusiastic about running it, considering how active and involved they become on other forums, but turn-out for this has been quite tepid.

I'm still planning to give this my all and do whatever I can to ensure that it goes off without a hitch, but the more feedback I get from people of any kind, the more I'll be able to work with to improve this one/future ones should they occur.

What Pesco said. I too don't feel like making something for someone, because it's too much work for a high risk.
Still, I can buy something cool, and be nice to someone, can't I?

I'm in, and I don't even know most of you plebs  :P

I share not the concerns of Kilga/Edible since I always thought Secret Santas were an excuse (much as is most gift-giving) to force your interests upon somebody else or else unload something you're not interested in anymore. Thus I'll be sending something I already have around the house (though not complete junk, that would be rude. Maybe a volume of manga or something.)

Hell, last time I did one of these I got a freaking Steel Angel Kurumi live-action DVD. And it unexpectedly turned out to provide a night's riotous entertainment on IRC four years later. So if I get a gift I can't possibly imagine having use for or interest in, I'll just shrug it off and consider that I might change my mind later.

Paying 5bux for shipping doesn't seem like a big deal either. Maybe if you're actually purchasing a proper gift it could be bothersome. :-X

Am I supposed to say something else as a moderator or did you just want one of us to demonstrate some forum camaderie? I mean, I only run this place still 'cause I haven't found an exit strategy.

In response to the people saying CPSS is a bad idea, I don't see what the harm is in trying to pass on a little goodwill, if only because right now I need to have some faith in mankind not being complete assholes more than ever. True, people aren't going to send you the best gifts, and it's not going to be anything big, but isn't it the thought that counts? And if you're not in the position where you can actually send anything properly, that's what the Creative Exchange is for. Basically, I want to think that contrary to what the mods are saying there is some tiny degree of camaraderie here, and that people can find the time to contribute to it.

I know that whoever I get, I'm going to make an effort to produce something that'll at least make them smile, and I'd hope that at least the majority of people who are taking part will do the same. Maybe I'm looking for something that isn't there, I dunno. >_>

Thanks Vic, you're pretty sweet for setting all of this up. Is anyone opposed to Vic joining gift exchange? Because i'd like to see him be able to participate if he wanted to.

Solution: next time use robots.

And that was the issue I had from the beginning, was to see if I could make it truly random enough, but since I'm drawing names and sending the information, I would always know.  Plus, having someone else send the PMs means that a new third person would get your information, and I already said I would avoid that.

Additionally, I was also planning to, should someone get a partner that doesn't send anything, I would out something together just to make sure that they at least got something in the end.

I don't know if I actually want to participate right now though, since the pool is still a little small.  We'll see.

Oh, and Vic should join if he wants to, even if he knows who he's sending the gift to.
Also, an option would be if an odd number of people join.

Only 11 gift exchanges, the rest will be exchanging stories/art/love.

Since no one will be direct partners (If A sends to B, B may send to anyone except A) then it won't matter how many people sign up.

I get home from work at about 26:00 on Friday, so that'll be the deadline for signing up.  I'll be drawing names and sending out partners that night, so everyone will have that weekend to do shopping.  I'll start assigning partners for the CE tonight, like I said.  Since I won't be assigning all of them at once, you may not get your partner until Friday.  Or maybe I'll assign them all today, who knows?

Any last-minute-ish question?

Cool timekeeping system bro
I prefer that system to saying "2 AM Saturday" because you would be amazed at the amount of people who assume that it actually means Sunday at 2 AM.

Plus, it's the time system they use for TV listings in GLORIOUS NIPPON, so it must be the best!

All PMs are sent now, I divided them up and sent out Gift first.  CEs should be in by now.

As far as sending out gifts, ASAP is preferred, but not required.  I think that sending them by the first week of December would provide them enough to arrive before Christmas.  That answer your question?
