Title: ZUN to speak at BitSummit 2014 (Mar 8)
Post by: cuc on March 04, 2014, 06:08:51 AM
It has been known for a while that ZUN's friend, the legendary game designer Yoshiro Kimura has invited him to appear in a roundtable talk at the indie game event BitSummit 2014 in Kyoto.

The time schedule of the event has now been released:

Kimura's talk session is scheduled at 4:00 PM, March 8 (Saturday). The time table has confirmed the speakers to be Kimura, ZUN, and Takumi Naramura of Nigoro, who created the indie hit La Mulana.

BitSummit live streams:

March 8 (public day): http://live.nicovideo.jp/watch/lv171496525

There is a chance this talk will go nowhere (for Touhou fans), if ZUN doesn't feel like opening up.

On the other hand, in last month's Nikenme broadcast, he gave some hints that he's planning to do something big that will help the doujin game world - in addition to the game he's making now. It's also possible for him to use this chance to reveal more of his thought process.

This is going to be more of a discussion on development rather than worldbuilding so I wouldn't expect any new touhou information here.  That said, I'm totally okay with that.

This is the kind of subject matter I wish more journos talked about with ZUN. A nice, relaxed discussion is fine, too.

Any kind of talk from these guys is great by me. Is the talk gonna be about a subject or will it just be about random gaming topics?

If there's any topic that they might talk about, then it's about making doujin games more available in the west. Dunno what method they'll use, but a possible choice is Steam. ZUN have shown interest about it before but he said that there are some issues with it.

Maybe a collaboration project for a Touhou game??? (Wishful thinking)

I highly want this to happen, if they make it easier for others to get ahold of then people are less likely to pirate games. PC has shown people are more likely to pirate if it restricts them more. I have heard people wanting Touhou on steam but I do see the issues it can have. Steam is basically DRM and lets not forget he might not be able to get right onto steam since he is an Indie dev, he might have to go through greenlight and then we will have to wait to see if Valve would even let him. Plus the coding to use with steam so he would have to go back to his old works and make it work somehow, then new patches possibly but I'm just stretching here. Last Issue I'd say would be how long would a Touhou game even appear on the front page? If new releases and DLC show up it'll get pushed down to the bottom fast.

If all three of them were to collab to make a touhou game I'd have no idea where to start on what it would be like... I don't now the latest game the other two have been working on to really get an Idea...

ZUN did talk about selling games to the west through DL means in bitsummit.  He has even made a twitter comment about him considering DL distribution of Touhou games.

Quote
いやー、ビットサミット楽しかった。居ただけで高揚したが、自分でブース出して無いのが悔やまれる。あ、あとトークでも言いましたが、海外も考えて東方のゲームのDL販売を検討しています

Has he mentioned how he wants to distribute them? Through his website or other means?

I think the word he used has a more proactive meaning than just considering, like instead of just "considering selling it", it seems to be more like "considering the options of how to best go about accomplishing it".

No hard details though, which he probably won't mention until everything's in place.
