Title: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project (Scroll Delivered!)
Post by: Totaku on March 01, 2013, 06:12:04 AM
(http://i.imgur.com/wH75Sx8.png)

Greeting, my name is Totaku, and I have come here because I want to talk about a large-scale project that I want to undertake.

As you have no doubt heard, ZUN will be making an appearance at Anime Weekend Atlanta from September 27th - 29th.  In honor of his first visit to the States, I have a project I would like the Touhou community to undertake called the ?AWA Touhou Scroll Project?.

Here are the details:

What is the AWA Touhou Scroll Project?

I would like the Western Touhou Community to create a long scroll that will contain art of all the Touhou characters, done by artists within the Western Touhou Community, starting with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and going through Forbidden Scrollery (and anything else that comes out before AWA)

This scroll will be given as a gift, from the fans to ZUN, at AWA to show our gratitude for the many years he has worked on the Touhou Project.

So what kind of work will this consist of?

This is where things get more complicated: There are a total of 82 Touhou Characters in the PC series, and I would like each of them represented on the scroll. I would like artists to volunteer their time to draw one -- or more, if you have the time and the inspiration.

For those interested in the project, I would like you to give me a list of 10 or so Touhou characters you would like to draw, as well as a sample of some of your past work. This way, I can assign artists to draw characters they are more familiar with and who fit the artist's particular style.  Initial concept sketches are also welcome.

My general requirements is that all art will be to complete it in CMYK at 300 dpi on 8.5 in. x 11 in. or larger. What art program you use doesn?t matter as long as the art is compatible to Photoshop CS5.

So what will the scroll layout be like?

If you have played Okami, then you may have seen the bestiary scroll (http://www.vazcomics.org/gamend/wii/okamiwii_bestiary.htm) from that game. That scroll had a very interesting layout that I would like to follow.  At present, we are re-looking at the options that are being given by a few community members who expressed interest in joining the project. Mainly because we want to reconsider the options of how the scroll should be handled since we need to make the scroll small enough and light enough for ZUN to take back home with him. So for the time being we ask you who want to join in this to sign up and vote (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?topic=6.0) for the scroll layout.

Once decided, the layout for the selected scroll will be looked upon and discussed until an idea is reached. Then I would like preliminary sketches from artists as you finish them, so that I can work on the layout.  Me and the team will work with you to ensure that the scroll work together from one character to the next.  If artists want to coordinate their efforts as well, that would be wonderful.

Once the initial art pieces are submitted, I, and others on the team, will finalize layout and construction. We are also considering hiring a company or person who makes long scrolls to assist us - any contacts that you can share with me would help!

This part I may need some help on because the process may be expensive. But until then, I need to get an exact estimate of what it?ll cost for the production of the scroll.

Some ideas I?m considering to use for the design includes:
Rice Paper (for printing the work on)
Brocade paper fabric (for backing)
A wooden scroll stick (for the where the end of the paper will be wrapped and bounded to)
Tassel (for decorative purposes)

If anyone has any better ideas how I can approach making an extremely long scroll, please feel to contact me about it.

So what?s the Deadline?

Art: August 31st
Scroll Design: September 21st

I?m looking to try to get the art done before the end of August. I will need about a month to work on the final layout to get it ready for AWA. Which means placing the art, printing the scroll, and properly crafting it.
Please be advised that if the scrollmaker asks for more time, the deadline may be moved up.  The scrollmaker has an absolute deadline of September 21st.

Who will I consider looking to into doing art?

Any member of the Touhou community who wants to participate can do so.  I will be pitching the project to various art communities as well. For the time being, I?m considering the following sites to spread word of the project, and to convince artists to join in the project:

MotK
4chan (/jp/ artist mainly)
Deviantart
Pixiv
Twitter
Facebook

If you have any other places you want to consider let me know as I?m very open to suggestions.

Is there anyway I can help?

Ideas, suggestions, offers to help with art or with construction, and free advertising are always welcome.  In particular, artists will be in high demand, and any contacts you have in the art community, or with scroll makers or with material suppliers would be greatly appreciated.

I would like artist and those who wish to help to come join at the AWA Touhou Scroll Project Site (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php) and if you can, come join the irc channel which is on the ppirc server (irc.ppirc.net) and come to #Touhoucon.

Good luck everyone and I look forward to working with all of you.

-Totaku

Additional Notice!

For anyone who is curious if they have been accepted or not please note that we will be declaring who will be a part of the project a few days after the closing of the scroll poll.

I really like this idea.

That said, this also sounds like it's going to be absolute chaos. All planning will have to take place in a single forum or discussion area where everyone participating is willing to sign up, actively discuss and coordinate the layout, and agree on how it'll work out in the end, and I just don't see that happening, sadly. It's a huge undertaking that will require everyone to be on the same page at the same time, and I just don't have faith that you'll be able to convince enough people to contribute, actually stick with it, and still make this a full (more than, like, 10 people) Western Touhou Community submission.

In addition, it's almost nigh impossible for non-artists to really contribute, so it ends up being more of an artist contribution than a WTC one.

Hey there. I've been a regular member of the Touhou group at AWA for a few years now and this seems like a great idea if you could get enough artists to make it work. As far as I know, I'm the only professional level artist in the local group but there are a few other local artists who may be willing to contribute. I highly suggest getting in touch with the members of our group who organize the Touhou panel there.

As for me... I'd definitely be willing to contribute to this is if everything works out. My specialty is fine detail 0.5 mechanical pencil drawing and in this case I would likely use digital colorization. I've been lacking a scanner for a while (though I plan to get a new one soon) so I don't have any recent examples to show you, but you can view some of my older work or contact me here if this ends up working out: http://captainonimaru.deviantart.com/gallery/ (http://captainonimaru.deviantart.com/gallery/) Of particular note is my old map of Gensokyo... but I don't get much time to work on fan art except for important things like this, so most of my work is original. ^^;

I would chiefly be interested in drawing Satori, Kaguya or Mokou.
Here is a low quality preview of a more or less recent original WIP of mine to give you an example of my pencil usage: http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m350/CaptainOnimaru/Mobile%20Uploads/2012-12-18201855.jpg (http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m350/CaptainOnimaru/Mobile%20Uploads/2012-12-18201855.jpg)

My wife is interested! She is a fan herself and loves Orin. She says she'll help out and would be glad to have her art in a gift to ZUN. Here's her deviantart page. She's quite talented.

I'm very impressed by the feedback I'm getting. And it's only been a little over a day since it started! ^^

Anyways, I'm going to go ahead and respond here.

@Mint: I'm glad you like the idea, and I do fully understand your concern with the how the project will be handled. I've been talking with a friend of mine who has done web design work before. (Telsapirate to be precise.) And he said he'd be willing to help me help me along with some of my concerns once he gets things under control on his end. (which he said will take about two weeks)

I understand that the scroll will have a lot of concerns that will need to be brought up. There will need to be plenty of things that will need to be talked about and make sure every one is keeping up.

That's why I'm hoping once Telsa is set to help me, he can work on the community board for this project and help along with the coordination on his end.

For right now though, I will be monitoring the places and advertising it (MotK, Facebook, and Twitter, DA, and Steam (At least Telsa's doing his work on Facebook and Steam when I last checked) while working on getting some of the basic things set up as I wait for Telsa to get to work on his end.

So for the short run these places I'm adverstiving at will probably serve as a temporary base of operation till Telsa can set up the board for this project. Even after it's done, I'll probably still use these places to promote and update the progress of the work since I'll be doing everything I can on my end to keep everyone up to date.

@Onimaru: I remember seeing that map before, I have been very impressed by your work and I know you have great potential with landscape work, but it's nice to see some of your other work too. I'll look more into it in the following days...

Also please provide a list of 7 more characters along with the three you mentioned already, thanks!

@Night4ce: Your wife is quite talented indeed. And she might be able to fit in here since I'm looking for differnt styles for the scroll. I'll would like her to provide me a list of her 10 choices though (in case she isn't picked for Orin)

@Desu-Cake Thanks for expressing interest. I'll be looking through your gallery when I have time.

@Freeze-Ex: I know your concern, but I'll bee fair, any who speaks english can join this. Doesn't matter what part of the world you are originally from or anything so you're welcome to join! Thank you for expressing interest.

@Hatateru: Oh you're welcome to join too, mostly like I told everyone else. It doesn't matter where you come from as long as you speak English, I'm fine.

@SuperParadox To be fair, I'm looking for all different styles as long as they work. As long as you provide me the work to see, I can determine what you can do if I have room.

@Venappo Like before, all nationalities are welcome to join. Still I recall your work and and this is some nice stuff.

Anyways, I'm going to inform you all that I wanted to get this project started on the first of March since I feel like we'll be working hard the next 6 months to get all the put together. I still will be making plans to contact my local Graphic Design firms to see if any of them will undertake the construction part. Because I will still need to determine a estimate on how much it'll cost to make it through them and compare it to doing it myself. (I have studied for 4 years to become a graphic designer, though I mostly freelance anyways.)

But anyways, I myself will be tied up for the next week as there some things going on at home. But please do not be discouraged as I'm still doing what I can to get this thing moving and will be looking at all of your work thoroughly over the next week. Once I get things under control here following the 8th I'll be putting my focus directly on the project.

This is a very awesome idea. Like, seriously. And it doesn't really seem that logistically impossible to me.

One concern I have though is that you must have a solid criteria to analyze quality and judge material and artists, with some degree of rigidity to it.

Interesting idea, I am posting here just to stay tuned :)

I think that I read somewhere that "only artists could be part of this idea" or something like. How about including messages from Touhou-fans across the world in the scroll too. Something like a scroll with images and grateful comments at its side-margins.

I'm glad to see that so many people want to contribute! I'm glad that so many want to do this!

@HakureiSM I'll explain more about it following the compliments.

@Kaze_Senshi I've been trying to come up with a way people other than artists can contribue to this, but this suggestion I really like. I'll have to look and see how I can work it into the scroll. Cause there's some things I want to look into since some things have been brought up. I'll get to it hopfully after the 8th.

@Super Paradox, OniMura, and Night4ce Thanks for providing me a complete list, I'll be looking over it in the following days.

@pasu Thanks for expressing your interest. You got a nice look going on here. I'll look more into it in the following days.

@Vyrein Good to see you expressed interest! Tell you about what I'll be doing about determining the art in a following the comments.

@VivitheFusjoshi Now this has me excited! I haven't seen you in a while and I know about your art. I'm very excited about the fact your want to jump on board here. And I'm looking forward to working with you! (also, I completely forgot about Youki, so I should of said "characters that make a physical appearance in the PC series or mangas, sorry Vivi. ^^;;

There been several concerns that's been brought up regarding the scroll and I'll bring up the ones I know that are important in the moment:

How will I go about judging and picking the artists that will work on the scroll?
Your 10 choices you picked and your art style will be what I'll be looking at while deciding where I will be placing you in terms of who I will likely give you as the first character to draw. Course depending on how many people join in the scroll project will also decide on how much work we'll be having to do. This is why I'm going to give it a little bit of time before I start judging work so that more people can join in.

Of course another factor that I will be deciding on is the quality and skill. Since it will help decide where to place you in terms of your work. You'll be given the responsibilities to work on certain characters. Though you will probably start with the given character based on all of your list that fits the style.

Also I will probably be giving other responsibilities depending on everyones' skills. This will be explained more when I get a chance to show more of the scroll's layout in detail.

In the meantime, as always, I encourage more artist to join. Because the more that join in, the better! I'm very glad to see how many are interested at this time.

What about the scroll's length? Won't it be too heavy for ZUN to take back home?

This is something I've been thinking about here since it was brought up to me on IRC sometime ago. Since I did learn that international flights might make it hard for ZUN to take his gift back home with him since the weight limit is much lighter.

So I'm trying to see if I can find time to fix up the initial plans to possible group in certain characters to help shorten the scroll's length since the weight of paper and brocade will be heavy as the scroll gets longer.

Chance are I'll be grouping certain character together. And in some cases, I will probably be also considering this when assigning artist to work on certain characters since the art styles must flow well through the entire piece while maintaining variety. Some character I'm considering putting together in a group include: (Futo Miko and Tojiko), (Seiga and Yoshika), (Star Saphiree, Luna Child, Sunny Milk), (Lyrica, Merlin and Lunasa), and (Remilia and Flandre Scarlet) just to name a few.

There are other things I'll need to bring up, but I'll save those for later since I'm still in the middle of handling things at home until after the 8th.

On other news, I heard that someone is going to bring up about the project at Momo con which has me excited. I look forward to hearing what responds I get following the 8th. ^^

In the mean time, keep on coming in, cause there's still lots of room for the project, and spread the word!

You seem to be implying that style will come before quality.
I'd think quality should be a major factor, and you shouldn't but be looking for specific styles but rather something that is well done, and let the diversity of art styles within the WTC show itself naturally.

Well, I understand how I phrased it may felt like I more interested in style. But I will ensure you that quality is still going to be very important factor for the work of the scroll. After all, this is going to be a piece of community work that is going to be given to ZUN. So I will be considering the quality of the work as well in this whole thing. I'll be discussing more about this part in further detail later on. But I will let you know that I'll be taking my efforts to make contact with the artists regularly to work with them and make they can bring out the best of thier work in this scroll.

Ok, I finally finished up the school issue that was interfering with my work here. So now I finally have a change to sit down and check out who else joined.

@Merp Oh now this is interesting. I'm glad to see you've come aboard.

@Aoishi-shi Oh this is nice, glad to see you expressed interest!

@forbiddencube Ah I'm glad you expressed interest.

@ 罪恋 Mmmm, you might have something going for you here. I'm glad you're interested.

Also AyatoNyaa from DeviantArt contacted me and said she wants to join. (if you're familar with her, she's the Nue's Cosplayer that became well known during the Mizuki Hotoushi event) Her list is as follows:

1) nue Houjuu
2)remilia scarlet
3)flandre scarlet
4) utsohu
5)patchouli
6) tokiko
7) yuyuko
8)Fujiwara no Mokou
9) kaguya
10)Rin kaenbyou

Now, here's what I'm going to do right now since I'm finally back to work on this:

Right now, I'm going to be looking at each of your artworks to see how your work will stand up in terms of what you're going to do and who you are wanting to draw. From there, I will be determining where I'll be placing you and who I will be assigning you to do.

Course if there are anything comes up, I will probably be attempting to contact you to ask you some questions regarding your work. It probably won't be much, hopefully, once I go through these and explain more about the scroll you'll be able to know fully understand the direction I'm going to attempt with the layout.

I was hoping to have time to cover the bits about the scroll today but I have run into a series of complication both with home and work. So the wait time will likely be temporary. I'm hoping to have everything ready to present by the upcoming week.

And to be fair, I am considering waiting another week to hear what the Momo-con aftermath results in. (We could get more people!) And I'm waiting to hear if Telsapirate's going to get moving with the website. (otherwise I got a plan B just in case).

Also Drunk_Aya has conisdered helping out with materials and I have been talking with him about the materials to see what he can do about the items needed for the scroll.

In the mean time, please watch warmly, as I'll have things prepared soon and will probably make another post regarding about the scroll in further detail.

Indeed it will. I will be looking through the artists the are interested in participating and deciding from there if they match the specifications. If there are people I debate about who I think have potential, I may have them join to see if they can put extra effort into thier work. But otherwise, yes, I will be selecting artists that I know will work for the project before I provide them with who they will be working on.

No, I will not be asking artists to draw in the Ukyuo-e style, as I am looking to capture variety and yet keep everything flowing evenly. So if you want to do Ukyuo-e style, that's optional.

I will cover more about the details on this later once I get have layout organized. Also if you plan to join, please make sure to provide me a link to your art and your 10 character choices.

@ Kinoko

This is actually an idea I have considered as an option and I may keep this idea in case things with the scroll do not work out right. At the moment though, the idea is to create something completely different ZUN can take home as a gift that he will come to remember.

@ Graph

Wow this is a nice surprise to see you here! You are definitely welcome aboard!

Let's get to the explaining about the Scroll Layout.

So what will Design layout look like?

Please note, that almost everything explained here is a suggestion, and it is open for discussion. Most things are not final and are subject to change while we work together on this project.

The scroll's layout will consist of the following: The Title, The Opening, The characters, The closing, the thank you from the fans, and the credits as shown below in this rough sketch in the link.

Scroll Layout (http://i.imgur.com/ykcxC4s.png)

The title will basically be a logo that will be the introduction to the scroll upon opening.

The opening will serve as an introduction to the what the scroll is and what it is dedicated to. I'm looking to have this translated from English to Japanese if possible for ZUN.

The characters section will serve as the longest and the main part of the scroll. This part will mainly be where the artists will be doing thier main work of the scroll at. Those that are selected will be assigned a character to work with and we will work on these and try to keep in contact with one another as we make progress. There will be sections that will have individual characters and sections that will contain groups of characters put together.

Most artist who will work on single character will mainly mainly need to put thier best effort into thier work and we will try to work on touching up our art as we make contact. Since this will a be a gift from ZUN we need to put our best into each piece, but we also need to keep in mind of how many characters we will do and how much time we will have left. There may be a chance you will be given more characters to work with if you have time.

As you work on the characters keep in mind that I will ask you to provide the following: A colored illustration with clear background in png format that I can put onto the scroll (or something I can easily edit into the layout.) Make sure the piece is 8.5" x 11". The scroll itself will be 11" tall, but will be somewhere between 40-70 feet in length. Also with your complete character I would like it if you could include a signature with your piece (it can be your online alias if you want it to be.)

The characters will be spaced slightly to allow space for the illustration to work in correspondence with the background. The background work will be worked on by a set of artist that I think will will be able to make backgrounds that transcend between one background to another. The reason I also wanted to consider the spacing is to allow for each of the art to work on it own and yet unite with scroll as a whole along with the background.

The background itself I want to consider to be simple, but I'm willing to adjust and add detail to it if it'll function better. Just as long as it works with the scroll as a whole.

The illustration linked below is simply a concept that what I'm considering in terms for singular character section of the scroll and also servers as an example what I am aiming for the scroll.. We can discuss more about the ideas following after go through interviewing everyone and picking who will work on who. (also do note, my sketches are usually VERY ROUGH)

Concept of Singular character section (http://i.imgur.com/lWQt2cK.jpg)

Group character will function in a similar manner as the single character with the exception of one thing. The group character will be taken on in one of two ways depending on how many artist join and how consistent thier art can be with another artist. Group character taken on by either a set of artist that style can work with one another, or by a single artist that is willing to take on a number of characters in the group.

Otherwise, most of what applies to the single characters will also apply here. Below is a concept on one set of characters I'm going to put together in a group

Concept of Group characters section (http://i.imgur.com/NJvkwIA.jpg)

The order the characters will appear will in chronological order in the games, books, and manga. And I will work on the text that will accompany the characters while I work on my own (thier title, thier name, and thier Japanese names)

The closing will conclude comments and thoughts regarding the project and serve as a final word regarding the project. I will also need someoen who can translate it to Japanese.

A word of thanks from the fans will be a section I will dedicate to allowing fans among to community to give a thank you message to give to ZUN. I will also see if I can get a translation of this in Japanese.

Finally Credits, to give credit to where it is due to the artists, and community members that pitch in to help make this project possible.
Once all the character are completed along with the text and background is finished along with final touch ups. I will be looking toward Drunk Aya (who's agreed to help me) to finish up the scroll design by getting the materials to help put together the scroll during it's construction phase.

Now I'm going to get ready to ask questions those who have express interest wanting to participate in the project. As it'll help me toward getting everything ready in terms of who and what responsibilities you will be taking on. I will also use this to determine who will be working on the team.

On another note, I've got a list of artist, that I'm going to go out and contact to see if any wish to join in as well. Also Telsapirate has informed that he will probably be getting to work on the forum for this project in the next few days. So hopefully I will have a forum available for the team as soon as possible. Otherwise, I do have a backup plan in place in case something doesn't work out.

As usual, I wish everyone who want to join in to please come in and express interest as I will looking forward to hopefully work with you on the Scroll Project soon and once we do. I can use this thread to post updates for the community to see as we work on the project.

It is my deepest regret to inform you that due to time constraints, dissatisfaction with the methods used in the running of this project and serious concerns as to the validity of judging based upon style as opposed to quality that I will be resigning from the proceedings immediately. Furthermore I find the notion of a single person dictating who will be drawing which particular characters detestable and it is mainly due to this conflict in opinions which has led to my decision.

I wish you the best of luck and hope to see this project come to fruition despite my absence.

Looks like I'll be pulling out of this too. There are many characters in the Touhouo universe and asking for full coloured backgrounds and fully coloured full bodied characters in super high res for free is pretty much unrealistic. It's not like we'll immediately pick up our tablet pens if you wave money at us but I'm afraid the workload is simply too much to handle for something a fan would do on their spare time.

Well, since I'm a regular Artists' Alley guy, I would love to be part of this~! The links to find my work and I are available in my signature below~

Just to be clear, though, it often takes me anywhere between 3-5 weeks to get a picture completed, considering the high quality and standards of my work, so you won't find me being able to do loads of characters right off the bat before this goes down~

I was assuming we'd play it by ear as we go along; I think it would be reasonable to cut a portion of the cast if we end up not having enough artists onboard.  You have to make compromises to meet a hard deadline like this.

That said, I understand the first wave of artists jumping ship, since it's not a small thing to ask.  Myself, I've probably only made things for print like... 2 or 3 times?  That in itself might be new for a number of us in the smallish Touhou community.  Better to go now rather than down the line when people are counting on you to finish your part.

By the way, it only takes me about 2 or 3 hours to color and shade a character given a separate lineart layer, so I can help out a few folks who haven't worked with color much/ don't have the means to color.

1. What's the point of putting text
2. If it's mandatory, why can't we do it ourselves?

Nah, don't do this. I think ZUN will still like it a lot even if it's in English.

Make sure the piece is 8.5" x 11".
Somewhat of a personal concern on my part - I like to use super thin, pixely lines. I've printed out some of my works (to hang on my wall, not to sell commercially, derp) and the quality ends up slightly ruined. If I get accepted, will I have to do the lineart with thicker lines to prevent quality loss once printed?

Quote

Bad choice broski. The individual artists should have the freedom to draw their own backgrounds if they wish to. Not to be rude, but this is quickly turning into your project, not a community project. Furthermore, making an artist draw more than two high-res, fully colored pictures is a real chore, especially if we're not going to get paid for it. You should introduce a limit purely for convenience's sake. (70 Touhous = 35 different artists contributing, 2 touhous per artist, and everyone chosen gets a fair amount of attention. Not too bad IMO)
Also - as long as the sequence of illustrations flow nicely together, what's wrong with black&white images?

OP you better improvise or I'm gonna walk away from this project. Just a heads up.

Post by: Totaku on March 12, 2013, 09:34:05 PM
I feel like I should of had taken just a little more time to explain. As I will admit that my post did come out a bit hard and demanding. I had been up for till 5 AM trying to put everything together to allow everyone to have a moment to discuss and maybe talk to me about the idea while I began asking questions among the participants.

So I apologize if my words came out wrong for I have tired myself out. The main idea of the post was to present my idea for the layout and I probably should of noted that not everything is finalized and it is open for discussion among those that want to participate. However the main idea of it being a scroll is still pretty much going to be the core of the project.

Everything I provided in my recent post serves as only a "direction" and I'm willing to work with the other artist to make things manageable on everyone's end. After all, the idea will be is that everyone will be a part of the team and that we will work together. I'm just a member who wants to provide insight and direction, but I'll let the artist decide. Just as long as we consider the fact that this is a scroll that will contain 82 (and possibly more if time permits it) TOuhou characters from 10 years, to give as a gift.

But I will make it clear, what is going on here is indeed a HUGE TASK and it will be a spanning over the course of the next 6 months to complete before the deadline. And I'm doing everything I can to try to reach out to as many artist as possible since I feel as more come on board the easier the project will become.

Also to clear up what I was suggesting with backgrounds and characters. I was not saying that everyone had to do both full color illustrations and backgrounds. Characters are more of a priority than the background (that comes in later down the road and can be up for discussion on how that will be tackled when we get there and as well as who will be willing to take care of it.  And as mentioned before, every about my post above is a suggestion and not final. Work with me here, since your feedback will help get a better idea where to go with this. Especially since this is going to be a gift for ZUN.

And what Graph said was an idea I had consider bringing up as well. Since I thought some people may not have time to work on everything and maybe the work can be split among everyone if necessary.

I will hopefully send you all some question soon to get a better idea about you all and get a better idea how to finalize some things. This is still in it's early stages. For those who left, I can fully understand if you feel you must go, but I would like to contact you for advice just to help get things going in the right direction.

Also BL2W, if you could provide me a list of 10 Touhou characters you want to do I appreciate it. I also don't mind if it takes out 3-5 weeks to draw a character, that's about the average time for me as well. So I understand how busy it can be for some.

This is the bit that is wrong:
I feel like I should of had taken just a little more time to explain.
No, dude. Everything here should've taken less time to explain. Here's the reason this, as it is, is not going to work: you're overthinking it.

The idea of this project is awesome, but it shouldn't, can't, be "we're gonna do a scroll like this and that and blablabla get a list of characters, it must be this way not that way I've been up since 5AM". It should be "guys, we're doing this scroll thing. Would be cool if you artists contributed with a bunch of your favorite characters."
That's all. No specific characters, no time constraints beyond a single due date, no setting artistic or dimensional parameters, etc. Don't put pressure where it isn't needed, man.
I know you want this to be perfect, but art almost by definition requires freedom, so taking that away is the first way to ensure you won't get anything done.

Relax man, just have the artists deliver as much art as they want to, in the style they want to, and yukkuri your way through this.
I'd physically help, but south america

Pretty much this.

I really don't want to see this project fail, at least not so soon in its early stages.
An art book might be easier to go with rather than a scroll, It would give artists way more artistic freedom. A scroll sounds cool and unique but I think we got to think about whats more manageable if thats the right word.  Theres also probably going to need to be more than one deadline, I mean having one deadline for art to be done seems like it would just end in chaos.

I'm willing to dedicate a lot my time to this project to help it get done. It just needs a lot more planning.

Theres nothing wrong with the limitations, if theres something Totaku really wants in this project then so be it. The artists will just have to find  way to work with it. The final version is up to him and I'm personally fine with whatever he wants to do.  But opinions from the contributing artists are still very important.

Jumping the ship so early into the project is probably not the best ways to deal with current situations though, theres obviously a lot more planning to do. I mean it does seem like its at a rough start but it will work out.

sorry i'm so bad with words

Granted, if you don't want backgrounds, then just pumping out characters alone will take quite a bit less time. Please make sure to let me know which you would prefer--with backgrounds or no backgrounds~ :)

As for a list, I suppose this will do for now. Although numbered, there's no particular order as to which I would favor more or less:

1. Marisa Kirisame
2. Reisen Udongein
3. Youmu Konpaku
4. Alice Margatroid
5. Flandre Scarlet
6. Remilia Scarlet
7. Sakuya Izayoi
8. Yukari Yakumo
9. Seiga Kaku
10. Toyosatomimi no Miko

(Really, though, I can do just about any of the characters and it wouldn't bother me. I love Touhou, after all~ ;) )
Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project
Post by: Saber Nero on March 13, 2013, 05:51:38 AM
First off - I love the scroll idea, I'd think ZUN would be very impressed/amused by an old fashion horizontal wall scroll that he can place on his wall or something. I'd count myself in if I had the time. And remembered how to draw :V

To Totaku: The organization did seem a bit forced, and as many perceived, a total nightmare. I'll have to say as a (temporarily) retired artist, you're basically trying to put shackles on something that is ultimately immaterial - a restraint on free sense and style in trying to create an inter-community project, which goes against the whole entire concept of bringing many people together to achieve an artistic goal. Let them do what they want and we can all decide what gets to go in and what shouldn't. The deadline isn't just for you to finish making the scroll; it's for everyone to get their submissions in no matter what the cost. I assume everyone who signed up for this project knows what a pain it is when someone doesn't make it on time.

To the people who decided to drop the project:
I get your concerns, but you had your reasons to sign up in the first place. What matters is that Zun gets a fabulous fanmade object to take home and talk about when this is all over. If that doesn't make you want to do something for this project, then you shouldn't have bothered in the first place. Yes, the organization for this project is a nightmare. Yes, there are concerns that the project may never actually get off the ground even after spending time and dedication to drawing your desired characters. But don't give up while this is still in the planning stages! There is still plenty of room for improvement, and while Totaku's projects haven't always been optimal, they were created with passion and dedication, and almost always made their deadlines. I honestly don't think this project is any different.

I think the project should be handled like this:

The issue of who gets to draw what character
Two decent ways to handle this. You get to decide which one works best given your time restraints.

Or, the best (and worst) of both worlds. Have sets of characters that any artist can pick and do the overarching list thing by sets and characters. Afterwards, people can vote on whose art should go in the scroll. The downside is amplified, however, by the fact that this may render some artists' hard work moot (in terms of the scroll) if they don't get voted up for it. The issue of some sets not being picked is also likely in this scenario.

Quality Control
Determined by the community, and more importantly, the artists involved. Simple as that. You're rounding up the most creative artistic minds from several communities. You should have a little bit of faith in letting them figure out which ones work best with the scroll. The steps to determining quality control should be figured out by 3 measurements:

Of course, having incredible artwork is a good thing, but if it just sticks out of the scroll like a sore thumb, I don't think that would benefit the scroll much more than the artist's ego. I would suggest that the scroll's background be defined (not fully completed) before work begins on the characters. The concept of flow is also very important in a group project, and every artist contributing must have some sort of basic image in their head when they start working. I wouldn't really call this a restraint rather than a setting, nor would I say whoever follows that setting best will definitely pass the quality control. But if you want the odds of having a smooth looking scroll to go up, you should give the artists something to mold instead of something to trace.

Deadlines
I would honestly bump up the submission deadline a bit earlier in case some people don't make it. Depending on how you decide to have submissions sent in (see: the issue of who gets to draw what character), it may take extra time to sort out what gets to go on the scroll, then the finalization of the scroll's layout, and finally to its finishing touches and materialization. Keep in mind that the artists are not just submitting artwork just to see a pretty scroll - they want to get involved in its final design as well. Everyone who participates ultimately wants a piece of their talent up on that scroll in a way that works best for the scroll. At least, that's how it should be.

People Skills
An inter-community project NEEDS a single place to chat. I don't care if it's MotK, I don't care if it's 4chan, I don't care if it's DeviantArt. Even before you get your list of volunteers finalized, you should have a common place that is easily accessible for each member of your project so they can share ideas and critiques.

It's Totaku's project
No, it isn't? Not if he wants the artists' part in it, anyway, and for that he'll have to listen to the artists.
The rest of your post is a silly nonsensical rant.

The artists will just have to find  way to work with it.
Or not, if they don't want to. He really can't force anyone to fit his parameters, so really, it's the other way around.

I can't say I'm definitely joining, but I'm expressing interest to join. (Preparations for college entrance exams and summer and all.) I'll probably be able to finalize my decision by next week.

deviantart (http://crowcakes.deviantart.com)/art thread (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,12854.0.html)

This is a the list of characters I picked, in no particular order. Italics mean that I might change the character later on:
1. Ran Yakumo
2. Yuyuko Saigyouji
3. Mystia Lorelei/Okamisty
4. Momiji Inubashiri
6. Flandre Scarlet
7. Yamame Kurodani
8. Rumia
9. Kisume
10. Painter!Shizuha Aki (I am extremely unsure of this one)

Miscellaneous questions:
1) What would happen if the artist ran out of steam in the middle of drawing?
2) What would happen if real life messed with the artist's schedule (and thus his participation in the project)?
3) Do we have to stick to the character's canonical appearance? (e.g. Mystia, see list)
4) Just to clarify: do the illustrations have to use a plain white/transparent background?

Just so you guys know, while the Americas and other western parts of the world generally have a decent amount of space in their living quarters, Japan is pretty tight. Even larger houses tend to be divided up into lots of rooms, so if even if you're thinking that this would be something cool for ZUN to unfurl and admire at times, that might not be too feasible unless he goes outside or something. While it is a really neat idea, it just doesn't seem all that practical from multiple standpoints.

perhaps the reason why more art has been done in jumping ship than the real project is because we weren't given the okay for the characters we chosen and thus can't even start on the sketches maybe

I don't get it.

Hopefully the album project goes better.
of course you dont you dont even draw

To the people who decided to drop the project:[/b] I get your concerns, but you had your reasons to sign up in the first place. What matters is that Zun gets a fabulous fanmade object to take home and talk about when this is all over. If that doesn't make you want to do something for this project, then you shouldn't have bothered in the first place.
i wanted to do something for zun not to be someone's dog
If i wanted someone to tell me what to draw and how to draw, i'd rather take a commission

I attempted to exit this project in a respectful and polite manner, evidently this has caused much unrest and drama which was not my intention, however, I cannot help but feel that many people are quick to demonise those who have left.

Overcoat, it may be difficult, but kindly restrain yourself from calling us 'weiners', we each have our own problems and your heckling is not benefiting anybody. You evidently haven't taken the time to understand our position at all.

Venappo and Pasu, you have expressed my sentiments impeccably. It is not that I have any objection to working for free but rather that there is only so much you can ask for before it ceases to be enjoyable and feels more like slave labour. HakureiSM is also correct, it has been over-thought and thus comes across as being restrictive, domineering and unenjoyable.

I reiterate, this project needs more input as to the selection of artists than a single person, especially as that single person is able to pick and choose whom he wishes to draw but nobody else holds that privilege. Most undemocratic, especially considering this is a group project.

Okay I admit the weiner on the head was pretty funny. Also I edited out most of the rage in my previous post because I happen to be a giant asshole ANYWAY, my apologies for not thinking of something a bit more tactful.

Also no, I'm not an artist - but I've worked on a few collaborative musical projects in the past decade [music is art too!] before, and they all seem to generally take 5 years (http://tales.ocremix.org/) to 8 years (http://milkyway.ocremix.org/). Typically because, as just proven, even for something as gratifying as being able to work on something with the purpose of gifting it to the man who has inspired you, most artists never see eye-to-eye on how something should be done. I think BECAUSE of the nature of this project, as it's something that's going to be given to ZUN himself, physically, and in person, I think everyone would want the best possible end product even moreso than if it was just something you released online. But y'all have to agree on something first. You haven't even really figured out what role each person should be performing in the project yet. Still, yes it is Totaku's project and while he's quickly learning how hard it is to lead a project like this, I hope the artists here will more respectful towards him in the future, and on the other hand, for Totaku to realize it doesn't have to be and really shouldn't be a 50 foot long ornate scroll.

Anyway time for me to stop waving my dick around, that was my 3 cents. I would love to see a scroll in ZUN's hands in September [or will the scrollery be forbidden huehuehuehe]

Or not, if they don't want to. He really can't force anyone to fit his parameters, so really, it's the other way around.

At the same time I see why some people are upset about how things are being done. It would have been definitely been better if instead of 'Heres how the project is going to be' it was 'Hey guys as contributors to this what would you think would make a good project?' giving everyone much more room to express their ideas.

At this point seeing how theres so many problems and complaints it would maybe be a good time to start from scratch and Y'know, get way more community input this time.
Since this is really a community thing where it needs multiple people to survive, not everyone can have what they want, and that sadly goes for Totaku (even if he is leader) as well.
Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project

I have taken the time to send everyone out a PM to all those that had expressed interest (and even to those that are concerned) because I wanted to get some feedback on things regarding the project so that we can figure out how to adjust things for this project. Because as I said, I'm want to correct any errors or misunderstandings that may occur as well as get an idea what everyone would have the time to do if they participate.

Anyways let me go on and try to explain some things based on some of the previous posts.

@Forbiddencube To answer your concerns I'll answer your questions in order.

1. The text is there to give the name and title of the character. But since it's a gift for ZUN, this is entirely optional. Since he knows his characters inside and out we don't really have to include this in the plans. It's just an idea I'm pitcing out and won't be a concern till near the very end of the project. If we all do decide to do text, then feel free to put it in.

2. You think so? I wasn't considering this idea till someone on IRC brought it up as a suggestion. And it seem like an interesting idea. Perhaps you can all give feedback on this?

3. This is going to be a printed so whatever you come up with has to be big enough to prevent pixelation to prevent quality loss.

4. As I said before, nothing is official, this is entirely an idea I'm presenting, I want the artists here to pitch in ideas for what would be the best suggestion action for this. And what should be considered for changing. And the mention you made about B&W Illustrations is one possible option as there are 82 characters in total. It will depend also on how much time you want to work on in it. And also additional feedback on this idea might be important for this as well.

@Syanas This is what I was hoping for when I presented my post back a while ago. Suggestions on how to find a better way to handle the project. Because I figured my ideas would not be sound and I was hoping to get some feedback on how this could be better approch. And yes Syanas, the way I presented the idea made it seem like I was forcing it, but rather I was presenting it as an idea on how to approach working on the scroll. And You Sayayan have given out some wonderful ideas that  I will be looking over and will consider contacting you when I get the chance.

@HakureiSM In relations to both posts, you're correct about that I make things a bit complicated but as I said, these was meant to be a suggestion I probably should of said that I was looking for feedback on this since as you said. This is not "My Project" this is a project among the fellow artists and the only way we can it work is if we all put our heads together and talk about how this can be approached.

@Pwn'd Crow Thanks for your info now regarding your questions:
1. Depends, I'm willing to let someone back you up (if they want to) unless you know for sure you'll be able come back. I just ask that we can stay in touch to know what to do if for some reason you can't.
2. I only ask for the artist to get done what they can get done. If something comes up in thier life that'll get in thier way. Then, I pretty much they can consider the options similar to answer to question one.

Question3 and Question 4 can be answer with this illustration of Seiga I finished last month. (This will not be used for the Scroll project)
Image sample (http://i.imgur.com/y3OQRxh.png)
So basically to a degree I would like them to maintain thier canonical appearance, but everyone is free to add artistic liberties if they want to. (it shows in mine)
Transparent background is preffered, but a white space is fine too.

And this also brings up an interesting point. Characters will be the highest priority which is why I would prefer if people could focus on them first. Background are not a big concern till later and those along with everything else is open for discussion.

In regards to what N-Forza and Overcoat mentioned, I recall the size of ZUN's room (based on the video) and it's not very big. So I'm willing to discuss about how to approach the scroll size  further with anyone if nessary as long as we can make everything work together.

And to Vennapo, Vylrine, Merp, and Pasu: I basically want to apologize for making the project sound intimidating and extremely demanding. That post was intended to be a suggestion and not something was insisted to be done. As mentioned before I'm looking for feedback and ideas to help make it better for you all.

If you feel you still wish to leave the project feel free to, as I understand. If you ever decide to want to come join back in, please let me know. I'm always welcome to having more helping hands.

^Thank you for addressing this~! I should be able to pump out pictures of characters much, much faster now that I don't have to necessarily worry about backgrounds (especially since I rather do like the idea of the backgrounds blending together as one really long background instead)~

Just a couple thoughts here:

I've worked in art collectives for years, and believe me, I understand the frustration of someone starting a project with guidelines you find silly or overwrought. Fortunately, people are free to choose who they work with or not.

Folks are free to participate according to Totaku's guidelines. Or not. Or start their own thing. Because of this, I don't understand why some of you guys went through the trouble of drawing illustrations of your disdain for the project. Was that level of sneering sarcasm necessary? Ditto the personal insults.

It sounds like Totaku is being pretty flexible and accommodating, and that things are smoothing out. That's great. In the future, though, it'd be super awesome of folks could just walk away peacefully if they're not or no longer interested, and keep the name-calling to a bare minimum.

Hi, I'm somewhat interested in this. I don't have any particular requests on what characters I want to draw, so you can use me to fill in the gaps, but I can only commit to three to four at most. Posing can be dictated to within a certain degree.

Here's a sample of my works:

I don't draw Touhou very often, though.

Welp, I'm in.

T-this is 8.5'' x 11'', right? (http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/2251/reiwithwings.png) It's bigger than my double xbox.

I could go for a less deformed (http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/6229/elcatfish.jpg) style, too. It actually doesn't take a lot of time as long as I get to do shaky strokes and cel-shading/no shading.

Calling dibs on:
1. Renko
2. Maribel
3. Rin Satsuki
4. Koishi
5. Nue
6. Reisen
7. moonbitches, if they count, otherwise Kaguya
8. Swacker
9. Nazrin
10. Tenshi
I can do anybody, really. If there are characters nobody wants to take, feel free to throw them at me.

Well I got been working through  about 10 + people who have asked to join this project from Deviant art now. And I've been providing them the same questions like those I presented to you. Some of these people include Ragathol among the artist and there's even been people who recently expressed interest out of the blue such as Leo (who I learned this from overcoat) and he recently proposed an idea that I'm looking into. It's a little different from the original concept, but I like it and I'm wiling to put it in the list of ideas on how we can approach the scroll. I'll have these presented by the weekend.

Anyways let me quickly run down some replies to the artist who joined through here.

@carillus Hey there, I think I recall you from DA at some point. Anyways, if you're willing to fill in a spot that's a plus, I'll be asking you question just like rest in a bit. Thanks for expressing your interest.

@Formless Void: This!!! Your drawings (especially the one of Reimilia), is exactly what I was trying to express to the artist in the initial scroll concept idea! This is what trying to ask an artist to do with character art. But pretty much you hit the mark on the idea! Though like I said earlier, I'm going to present in a second idea that think can also work for you (and everyone els, it might be possible to put them together too).  Since I will be looking for everyone's feedback on it.

Either way, I'm glad you are wanting to join and I'm looking forward to working with you.

Anyways, I'll be posting the two ideas sometime in the weekend for feedback and also waiting for things to get organized on Telsa's end since he's starting work on the forum for this project this weekend as well. So keep your eyes open folks!

It might not make any difference for me to say something since I'm not an artist, but I guess I can give out some general suggestions anyway.

Honestly my main suggestion is: just drop the scroll idea and do an artbook instead. While the scroll seems like a cool idea and would be original, once you think about it, it's impractical on pretty much every level. It forces the idea that all the art needs to "look good" and "flow" together, despite artists having very different styles. Not to mention the already mentioned impracticality of its size. Is ZUN even going to be able to take this on a plane? Where the heck will he put it?

So yeah,  basically the scroll is kind of silly and impractical, especially given how little time you have (and continue to waste since no real decisions on anything have yet to be made).

The artbook is not only more practical in regards to its size, but it also allows nearly complete artistic freedom. Artists' styles wouldn't have to "go together" as they would on the scroll (which is a weird and subjective thing to figure out anyway). Additionally, everyone could just draw whoever they want and they would also be able to choose to do backgrounds or not, without some sort of attempt to make a background that flows with multiple characters in multiple styles on top of it. Though I do like the idea of trying to cover as many characters as possible or at least every way, so I'd suggest keeping a database of what everyone's planning to draw so if someone isn't sure what they want to do they can check that out and possibly choose characters or a game that haven't been represented yet.

Basically with an artbook the only possible overarching decision would be some sort of uniting theme, which isn't even totally necessary. Also I guess if too many people submit art it'd be necessary to pick what ends up in the artbook, and the only reasonable way of doing that would be through a vote.

Beyond that I suggest more than one person be "in charge" as honestly Totaku hasn't really done anything yet to actually get the ball rolling (not that the drama helps), and time is already ticking.
(gosh dang it you posted while i was typing but this is all still relevant)

Ok I'll being by quickly answering your questions Jam-Kiske.

Regarding the scroll itself: I can understand your concern with the idea why not consider the book instead. But thanks to some people I've talked to regarding the project and speaking to them about the scroll I was able to reach a better idea that I think will work and benifit everyone and people won't need to worry as much about the some of the ideas that I put on the table before because some of the newer ideas are much more easier to manage and far less stressful. Also as you will see, size has been definitely taken into consideration and we have considered the fact of about his work room. Because he needs to be able to take his gift home without issue and maybe look back upon it one day.

Regarding the idea about artbook: This idea has actually been on the discussion table with me and the few other who have been talking to me and it is being possibly considered as part of the plan. But it's still being discussed ATM. We'll probably have more on it as we make progress.

As for me, well you're right, there's only so much one person can do. That's why I've been asking Drunk_Aya, Onimura, Graph, Syanas, Telsa, and Leo for assistance, and consider to have them help along with getting the project together. I may be pulling in more as we keep moving.

Anyways, we spent time talking for the last few days about what could be considered for the scroll and ended up with at least 5 different ideas that most of us found interesting. And now I need you all to go vote for it. Which leads to this.

Today, the AWA Touhou Scroll Project forum is now live! (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php) You can find the scroll layout voting page here (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?topic=6.0).

Also Drunk_Aya has worked with me and agreed to let me use his IRC channel for the duration of the project. So for anyone that wants to come talk with me when I'm around (and hopfully with the others). Feel free to go to the irc.ppirc.net server and come to #Touhoucon

My thoughts on the options:
- Double Vert: 120'' sounds kinda claustrophobic. Probably gonna need several floors per piece depending on how lumped together the characters are.
- Condensed Vert: What are the cost of each piece? I think vert would work best if you did
one smaller scroll
for every game.
Otherwise we're gonna need significantly smaller drawings.
- Condensed Hori: More room than Double Vert. mite b cool
- Panel & Segmented: As long as there's space. 40' doesn't sound like something you could hang on a wall though.

Anyway, I'm gonna be taking it easy at my 妹's place for an entire month starting June, so I'll be working on this if her tabloid is still functioning. Also, if the bgs are just mad stylization and no overly complex shading I could help out with them as well.

EDIT: I'm replying to the PM. This bit can be safely disregarded

my two cents:

condensed segmented horizontal is a definite no for me, it will require too much time and collaboration

personally I prefer the wind waker one, I would also like to suggest the art to be done in b/w or monochrome because
1) cutting printing costs
2) scrolls are usually written in black (hey, looks neat, esp on a rice paper scroll or whatever)
3) save time and hassle over colour coordination

There's still the issue where newly registered members have to make 10 posts before being able to post in this thread. Of course, you could simply move this to a more public area of the forums, but the other forum has the benefit of being equally easy (hard?) for people to sign up for. Furthermore, it's easier to organize the thread and project as a whole since there's more personal control over it (from the project leaders' point of view).

Well I've been spending my time figuring out the expenses and cost for the supplies needed for the scroll.  And while there are still months down the road to consider this. I thought I go ahead and bring them up now. You can find out more about them here (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?topic=40.0)

So if you have additional idea or suggestions on the materials please feel free to bring it up.

Also I took to opportunity to update the list of artist that have joined this project. There's been a big load that came pouring in over the last few days. But overall there are now 59 artists! (And Growing!)

I also took the opportunity to inform you that all artist will get a heads up soon on if they have been accepted for the project. So keep an eye on the list over the next few days after the closing of the Scroll Poll.

You're making a closed list of artists? Why?

To put it bluntly, if you were running this, would you want a bunch of random artists jumping in the middle of the project around May, June, July with everything already long said and done shouting out, "I wanna be part of this, too~!"? There are already nearly 60 artists who want to be involved now, and characters and backgrounds have to be assigned far in advance if we want this project to ever see the light of day.

In short, this is supposed to be an organized project, not a free-for-all~

To put it bluntly, if you were running this, would you want a bunch of random artists jumping in the middle of the project around May, June, July with everything already long said and done shouting out, "I wanna be part of this, too~!"?
Uh, yes? You really think you'll have anything done by may? That's cute.

Instead of fixing an elitist list of artists arbitrarily selected through some sketchy parameters that are still not clear to anyone yet, how about just keep indeed as a free-for-all, collect ALL the art you can, and then select what's best from it? Instead of imposing more restrictions on the restrictions of the restrictions.

I think he meant that it would be disruptive for people to jump in later instead of now, Haku, but your point does still stand.

The rules for this project keep changing and I think it's really putting off a lot of people who would otherwise be quite enthusiastic.

Uh, yes? You really think you'll have anything done by may? That's cute.

Nobody said anything about the project being finished by May. That month, as well as June and July, if you recall, were merely used as an example of an estimated time much farther away from now, and, on top of that, it was stated that the timeframe given as said example would be "in the middle of the project."

Instead of fixing an elitist list of artists arbitrarily selected through some sketchy parameters that are still not clear to anyone yet, how about just keep indeed as a free-for-all, collect ALL the art you can, and then select what's best from it?

Because many people would be inclined to do whichever character they wanted, leaving us with--realistically-speaking--piles of the same character done many times over and other characters having virtually no entries whatsoever. Please keep in mind that there are not only, say, ten characters in Gensoukyou; there are upwards of 100, and some of them are far more popular than others.

So? I thought the goal of the project was to demonstrate to ZUN the love of the western community for the franchise, not to make an character encyclopedia. That exists already.

The concern is that we want to prove that we care about Gensoukyou's world and community to ZUN, too, not just a handful of its cast.

For example, one of the most popular characters that people have listed on the survey in their top three has been Remilia. Now, imagine getting tens to hundreds of drawings/paintings of Remilia only and far, far fewer of everybody else. What would that say to ZUN? That EoSD was the best game in the series and that the others don't even compare? That no other character is as good as Remilia? That doesn't seem at all fair~
Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project
Post by: HakureiSM on March 23, 2013, 01:16:45 AM
That doesn't sound unfair at all, it just sounds like horrible overthinking.

I got given a Touhou artbook for Christmas. It features, Remilia, Flandre, Reimu, Aya, Yukari, Patchouli, Koakuma, Remilia, Reimu, Reimu, Reimu and Marisa.
I hardly think if ZUN were to see this book he'd think Serendipity is such a cunt, he only featured popular characters in his book.

Somehow I think ZUN will be quite flattered to get any tribute of any kind from American fans. This is both cumbersome and tedious, and feels like you've taken down one set of restrictions and replaced them with another.

At any rate I think the topic has become more about fixing problems, real and perceived, with the central goal for the project, and increasingly less about actual ideas or work to show for the project. I think this says a lot already.

Tread lightly.

but you realize that the western community actually does not care in general everyone? that yes, a majority hanker over the vampire lolis, or mainly the EOSD cast,  yes you might like other touhous, you might like every touhou, but not everyone does. not every touhou fan loves all the characters. A LOT OF PEOPLE voice out their distaste for the wakatsukis, 'lovingly' labeling them the 'moonbitches' just because they were so 'OP and shit thats unfair WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH'  yes i know, someone has volunteered to actually draw the both of them, which is ok and everything, but as haku said its not a character encyclopedia, he already knows his characters that he made HIMSELF, why give him a gallery of things he knows, of things he created???????

even in the east EOSD  is by far one if not the most popular(only falling short to perhaps IN or SA) , all we have to do is to instill a "first come first serve" guide for everyone, which i thought was already in place but APPARENTLY NOT?.... look i've had to do group projects every semester and already we cannot decide on the focus of the project (encyclopedia or graphical love letter to ZUN for his creations? you choose)

if you want to impress him so much why not just hire some professional renowned artist/illustrator, ive seen a few that are touhou fans, surely its not hard to find them, and just have them draw the whole fucking scroll, im sure ZUN will be so impressed, and im sure this is fair, every character gets their spotlight.

after all, the goal should be to show western art and love of the series?

for people randomly wanting to jump in, isnt that we have a deadline for?

in other matters i think it would be good for someone to crosspost updates (instead of just linking) form the other forum JIC people dont see them

This is likely because much of where we operate now has been on the forum Totaku set up recently, which has been very constructive; though, we are still posting updates here, too, of course~

i dont know it looks really dead (signing up isnt counted because there's no real stuff being done)
also the scroll layouts are very very confusing, i dont understand the differences

That I can answered easily, I am taking care of that. The prices for the materials are not exactly that far out of my grasp. Which is why I'll be taking care of getting the supplies and the printing done. I'll be looking into also getting someone I know handle the sowing fabric and will eventually do some testing with mounting the rice paper to the fabric further down the road. I've been planning out everything carefully and I shouldn't have any complications since I'm planning my budget carefully for this.

Also I'm not sure what's confusing about the scroll layouts.

Looking at the top two choices ATM, the horizontal condensed scroll would have characters close together (similar to the pic I posted with it) so you might have to work with the artist to help make sure your piece can work in the composition. It would still allow you a pretty good amount of freedom. You just have to keep in mind of the characters around you.

While the horizontal panel scroll would have the artists work on a panel to create a scene with the characters (and would require some collaborations) Kind of like pages or panels to an art book, but put on a scroll instead.

This project is not going to work out OP. It sounds great on paper but when executed in reality, it's a friggin' mess (another reason why I dropped out of the project). The more reasonable people ITT like HakureiSM and Vento have already pointed out huge flaws that I shan't reiterate.

The fact that no one has actually picked up their pen and started drawing is a concern as well. AWA is six months away (not a lot of time if you think about it) and telling 50+ artists what to do is going to be a pain in the ass, especially if massive arguments break out.

Yeah. The fact that none of the artists have even been told whether or not we're going to be included yet, let alone who we get to draw, is making me feel a bit worried. I can't help but feel that there's too much focus on organization, and not enough on producing content.

The wait is because of the initial criticism that the organizers weren't taking into account the artists' input on the how to arrange the scroll, correct?  So now they're taking the time to consider the options.

Voting on the scroll layout at the project's forum closes tonight, by the way, so with any luck things should be moving again soon.

Before that deadline, here's a friendly reminder for everyone to play nice, regardless of whether or not you support the project. This thread can be used for project organization and for working out or circumventing difficulties that may arise throughout the course of the project. It will not be used for people to drop an unproductive deuce in the middle of discussion.

For those that did not make it in. Please understand that while you were not accepted, you can still contribute to the project since you may be able to provide feedback and help us along the way! And who knows, we may turn around and contact you if a door of opportunity is open for you! So don't count yourself out of the project!

I will be going out of my and contacting all the applicants and informing them who they will be working on and directing them to the forum here so they know they must do for thier character(s) that they have been provided to work on.

Applications to the AWA Touhou Scroll Project are still open for those that are interested joining. As some artist are begin given multiple characters to work on. There might be a chance to help lighten thier work load if you have what it takes and if they don't mind. But please be aware applications are set to be closed on June 1st and we will not be taking in any more artist (unless the situation demands it).

For those who are now part of the art team, please refer to the Character Guidelines that are posted here (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?topic=46.0) or read down below to understand what you should do for the project!

I look forward to working with you all!
Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project (Character Guidelines)
Post by: Totaku on March 25, 2013, 02:32:23 PM
Greetings to all the selected artists!

I welcome you to the guidelines for the characters you will be working on for the AWA Touhou Scroll Project! We will be covering all the details regarding what you will be doing for the project here!

So here are the guidelines for the project:

What scroll are we working on?

From the votes that had been collected from the poll and feedback we will be working on the horizontal condensed scroll. This scroll will mainly consist of Touhou characters that will be close to one another. And will be presented in chronological order in which they appeared in the series.

http://i.imgur.com/iJcbhAi.jpg

You will be drawing close to other artist for this project so keep in mind of who you are working next to and try to work with them accordingly since what you have to work with the space around you and the other artist respectively.

So who will be drawing who?

After our team had gotten together and took a look at the work of the artists and we were able to arrange them in the a way the art style could be able to work together. And at the same time, the ones that were selected also happen to be all get within thier 10 ten choices. Since you will be working with these artists. It is recommended that you make contact with the artist to see if they can give you input on what they are working on and try to work along with them on the composition. Keep in mind that we are working in a 20 foot space with 80+ characters. So they will be close to one another. (It may become large or smaller depending on how the layout is managed, but this is the estimated length we expect the section to be.

How must we provide our work?

Based on the guidelines for this layout, we decided that the artist should provide a full-bodied colored drawing of thier character in CMYK, 300 dpi, at a minimum size of 8.5" x 11", on a transparent .png file. (White background is fine too since that can be edited out, but transparent is recommended.) The character should maintain thier respective canon appearance, but artistic licensing is allowed.

The reason for this is because this is going to be a printed piece that will be roughly 20' x 11" and thus will be printed. The sizes are also need for us to work on the placement and adjustments as needed so the characters can work in the composition.

Keep in mind that also characters that are taller are going to be placed behind smaller characters. (For example, Cirno is obviously shorter to Meiling, so Cirno will be in front)

Also please keep it worksafe!

How are we going to work along with the other artist?

Since the scroll is going to have characters closely placed together it is recommended that you try to contact the artist working beside or in front of you character since you will need to be able to work out a way to that your piece will work together.

Collaboration will be allowed as well if you can work together to make a piece that works with the characters in your group and keep in mind of your fellow artist beside your group.

Rubin left some recommendations of places where you can plan out some early collaberations at like Sketcher (http://www.artgrounds.com/sketcher), Flockdraw (http://flockdraw.com/), and IScribble (http://www.iscribble.net/). You are free to use those or any other idea you have in mind to work out anything if you are planning a collaboration or simply planning things out in general.

You can also come and discuss things in the forum and bring up your work in progress here if you choose to make a topic. Or if you want to you can come to the IRC channel located on the server irc.ppirc.net on the channel #Touhoucon. I'm also open to other ideas where group communication can take place like Skype if needed.

I will also make an attempt to make bi-weekly contacts with the artist to see where thier progress stands. So I can talk over with the team if anything comes up.

If any problems arise that you need to bring up, feel free to contact me (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?action=profile;u=2), BL2W (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?action=profile;u=4), Graph (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?action=profile;u=10), or Onimaru (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?action=profile;u=3) as we are here to help you with your needs.

How should we send out work?

Since most image hosting sites have a tendency to compress files for space purposes. I would recommend that the final version be sent by Mediafire (http://www.mediafire.com) or some other file hosting site that can send large images without compressing them down to size. Zips files would be recommended.

What is our deadline?

The deadlines for the project will be set up in two periods. Early drafts, and Finals.

Early draft are set for the period of June 1-7. Artist will need to submit something of thier characters so they can be set in place to work on for the layout.

This is to ensure of two things. To give a good idea of what the background team will be putting together for the background. And to also determine the exact length of the scroll for the project. Once the placement have been determined I will be going out to purchase the brocade fabric needed for the backing. I had been informed to make it viewable I should allow an extra foot on each side so if this paper scroll ends up being 20' then I'll be needing 22' or so of brocade fabric.

The final deadline is set for August. While the original intended deadline is set for August 31st Keep in mind this may subject to change a bit depending on the situation as I work on the scroll. Since I'll be taking this to a professional printing shop to get it printed, look to get the fabric sowed, and work on gluing together the paper to the fabric and possibly putting the scroll rod in place that Drunk Aya might send to me. (Or I send the entire scroll to him to put in place.

If any changes occur, I expect it'll still be within the month of August but I'll notify you if it happens.

If you are able to complete your work than earlier than expected then that will help out a great deal since it will allow time to work on the layout and organizing the scroll. And if everyone can contribute to the project and complete thier parts early then we can open up the possibility to add possible things or even consider other things to go along with the scroll. (Books are being considered as part of this option)

Will we be able to post our work to show to someone else?

If you mean your WIP, then that's fine, but for the sake of the project, I think it would be best to keep the completed project under wraps till after AWA at the end of September. On October 1st, if you want to post your work online for others to see go ahead!

Anyways, I hope that explains everything you need to know. I look forward to working with you all as we make our way to completing the Touhou Scroll Project!

Apparently, there was an error somewhere along the way and I accidentally placed you for Shou. I do sincerely apologize, and if you would like, I can attempt to correct the situation with a character you did, in fact, list. However, I believe overtly claiming to throw a "tantrum" over such an error is uncalled for; all you needed to do was point out the error. Thank you~

Actually, it won't be a bother at all. I can easily give you Rumia (who is in your top three) since Lolice is already doing Medicine, which is a character in her top four (Rumia is lower on her list by comparison, too). There were a few stragglers who came to sign up at the last minute today, so I'm going to have to edit this list a teensy bit anyway.

So, I ask you, pasu... Would you rather have somebody you would like to work on, or are you going to stay stubborn? :derp:

Well, I definitely know that your list was right. In fact, yours was the one that was copied over to pasu's by accident when I was given people's top ten lists to study (I usually didn't look at many of the lists that were simply posted on forums); fortunately, after closer inspection, that was the only error that was made~ :o

I agree what vento suggest about the draft deadline
one of the advantage of having the draft done early
is that other artist can coop with other with the posture to make a more fluid connection between each character
and also it's fun to draw with other artist too |>w< >/

Is anyone else getting database timeouts on the project forum?  I'm concerned about whether the site can handle the number of people on the project as its usage increases.  On the flip side though, it's great that we got such a large artist turnout.

It's not that disruptive yet, I got it once yesterday and once this morning, and was able to get back in 2-5 minutes later.

I don't believe there are any restrictions on any of the artists for going at their own pace... If you want to show us a draft and then get onto working with the meat and potatoes, so to speak, as soon as possible, then by all means~! There shouldn't be any issues with doing so as far as I'm aware~ :)

Like BL2W said, there's no restriction so you can keep working on your character as you go on! As getting ahead of schedule is encouraged. But as I mentioned before it's sometimes a good idea to keep in contact with your neighbors to know what they are doing too. If a good number of people can do this, it'll allow for an easier chance to determine the amount to borcade I'll need. But as mention the longest I'll wait for is June the 1-7. Becuase I'm aware that some artist are busy and may not be able to jump in as quickly as some of us are doing ATM. (One I know will not be able to jump in till May) Thus why I'm allowing the wait. Course if the situation calls for it, I'll be contacting the team if needed to reconsider the deadline. But until then it'll stay in place as is for the time being.

Also Graph, I contacted Telsa and he informed me what's going on is coming likley from the provider's end so he's going to contact them and see what's going on.

Time for me to post week 1's Update! You can find it on the tumblr blog (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/) or read down below.

Quote
With all the artist that we've picked to joined the project I'm surprised at how productive this week has become! I've informed the artists that are now part of the art team of the AWA Touhou Scroll Project and almost immediately the majority jumped onto the project without hesitation! As a result, this week, we had lots of sketches from the assigned characters they were given to do! Overall 39 characters have now been sketched up and are currently being worked on and one of them has been completed!

(http://media.tumblr.com/d26c079b2d7227dc8828e43972a77b5f/tumblr_inline_mkkljtuGuZ1qz4rgp.png) (http://i.imgur.com/pLowG2G.jpg)
(click the image above to see the layout, or come to the forum for daily snapshots)
I can pretty much say that me and the team were all surprised with the productivity everyone has been giving. As we didn't expect the artist to jump on this right away.

Most of this week has been spent organizing the forum and fixing the lineup of character to keep them in chronological order. And I've been busy contacting with the other artist here and there that needed help. And while I may have been trying to get to work on my character, I haven't gotten to the point where I can put up a sketch that I feel is ready yet. (Personally I'm shocked at how fast most artist here can work, they work much faster than I can. ^^;)

In the meantime, we've also had additional artist that wanted to join in on the AWA Touhou Scroll Project and we're trying to see if we can fit them in some slots. And while we have started, I will note that a few artist haven't contacted us back. As a result there is a probability that we may still have possibly openings. We're going to give these artist another week to contact us in hopes that they will let us know they are participating. Otherwise, we'll be assigning a new artists in thier place.

At the moment though, under sheer luck we managed to get one in.
Chief

For the rest of the artist, don't count yourselves out yet! As mentioned above there are the probability that slots will be open and we ask you to please wait until we contact you to let you know if you can join in.

As for now, the first week has been a blast! And I'm looking forward to seeing what is in store for us in the coming week! Until then, keep your eyes open, and please feel free to check out the forum!

-Totaku

On a more special note for you all here, I also post snapshots here on the forum on the 2nd post (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,14392.msg952649.html#msg952649) if you all are curious in wanting to see daily progress

Whoops, you're right, Medicine comes before Yuuka. So I'll make sure to change thier placement and flip Yuuka later today. ^^;

Also if you have a high resolution of your sketches feel free to send them to me so I can update them later (keep in mind the final piece needs to be 300 DPI resolution for printing).

Yeah it is, and I realize it's a small mistake. Because I looked back at PoFV and looked at the order the characters appeared in it and it turned out to be "Aya, Medicine, Yuuka, Komachi, then Shikieki."

But I'll be fair, I can make exceptions to these situation (Kinda did the same with Reisen II and the Watatsuki Sisters, kinda..) arrangements.

So basically I like you tell me here what think will work best.

I took some snapshots of some alterations just to see what you think.

Chronological Order (http://i.imgur.com/u9LcsNZ.png)
Flipped (http://i.imgur.com/UjbTm10.png) (like you suggested)

Feel free to tell me you think and I'll go ahead and make the arrangements.

One thing I realised was... Alot of people drew facing right, and lots of their artwork were flipped, which isn't good for some because they look a tiny bit off

Either not alot of people knew the scroll is to be viewed eastern style, or..

It's true. It probably could have been made clearer that the scroll is going to be facing the direction that it is... I was also confused when I first saw the general layout until I came to realize that it was supposed to viewed in an Eastern style~

So are the (majority of the) characters supposed to be facing RIGHT or LEFT?
It might be a good idea to clear this up in the instructions so less of this flipping stuff happens because honestly, a lot of art becomes quite screwed up when you flip them horizontally...

So are the (majority of the) characters supposed to be facing RIGHT or LEFT?

Well, actually, the way you want your character facing is ultimately up to whether or not you want them to interact with other characters along the scroll; also, whether or not your character is just going to be facing forward is another factor that would end up negating the need to concern yourself with the direction of the scroll...

I guess the best--and most general--way of putting it is that the scroll is supposed to be starting with Reimu on the right and moving left by chronological appearance (though, this order is subject to slight changes every now and again)~

Time for week 2's (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/post/47458577723/week-2-working-together-and-keeping-pace) update.

Quote
Week 2 has come and gone, but the momentum is still charging at full force without the slightest slowdown. As of this point, 51 characters have been put together on the scroll and are still being planned out while 3 of them are complete

You may see this week's progress below if you click the image.

(http://media.tumblr.com/6975cce3e4c2f38d80660223314a0478/tumblr_inline_mkxw32aFuT1qz4rgp.png) (http://i.imgur.com/OdFyVpX.jpg)

Keep in mind that not all the images you see here are not final are are subjected to change in due time.

Most of this week was spent making contact with other artist and discussing plans on how to organize things with the team. It's been pretty busy especially for me who has to work as a teacher (at a home school and a project manager). But at least things are still running very smoothly.

As I look, I'm impressed with how quickly most people are still working through this project. Some things are happening faster than I anticipated. So I'm trying to do what I can to get started on getting the paper and looking through the fabric. While I had plans to buy the roll of paper right away, I decided it might be better to see if any stores around here have cheap samples of Rice paper before I go and buy the whole roll. So I'll be looking into that. I've also been looking into the fabric stores this weekend to see what kind of brocade were there. To my surprise, there were plenty, but only a few stuck out. I did find one impressive design and put up a link to another fabric store in the forum that I'll be making plans to visit. So I can begin to tally down what I'll be needing.

But for now, I'm got myself some fabric glue for the late stages of the project (and plan to buy a brayer later this week if I can find one).

This week was also the week I checked with fellow artists to see what was going on and spent my time contacting them. Most of them have contacted me back so all is well. For those who haven't I would like to know if anything has happened since the last update. And there are a few that I probably haven't contacted because they either just joined or have just recently posted progress thus they're up to date. But if you want, feel free to contact me regarding your progress.

And since there are artists that are already done with thier characters, I'm going into setting up a "Final Submission board" soon so you can send the large document to be placed in the final version of the scroll. It should be up sometime this week.

There's also been a lot of feedback coming from artists as well so things have been altered and changed as things kept moving along too. And also as I look at the progress being made I see how the spacing seem to be getting more compacted. While I'm not too worried at the moment, I will be making adjustments to it accordingly as time goes on.

Now for all the artist that have signed up I got some good news, some bad news, and some interesting news.

The good news is, I was able to get two more artist in to be assigned as part of the Background team!

ZENI
Vylien

However the bad news for all new artist are that all the applicants who I've contacted have finally reached me all as of late last night. Meaning that right now characters are full for the time being.

However....

Don't exactly count yourself out! We have selcted a few artist that are now part of the "Waiting List"

Studio LG
Tenkko
Niso
Merp
Uru
KANiChaN
MaullarMaullar

These artist that were selected met the expectations we are looking for but while they do not have a position open for them at the moment, this may be subject to change as events play out. As we have considered adding additional things to the scroll, if we have the time and space for it. And in the event something happens and we need someone to come in and lend a hand then we'll contact you when needed.

But this doesn't mean you can't register. If you have what it takes we can welcome you to join, but do understand you'll be waiting a little while before we can determine anything.

And for those who didn't get selected do understand that we still appreciate you interest and we welcome you to come and provide us feedback since your ideas can be important to other artist. So feel free to join in.

This should wrap up the story for this week. Stay tune as we discuss the progress in the weeks to come!

Frankly? Ouch. There's the quality issues I was worried about. Will you shelve bad submissions for ones that aren't terrible? You've got perfectly decent people on the list.

So I heard there was a quality check for the project... Are you guys going to chicken out now because it would be too mean to kick off people?

Adding to kinoko's thoughts on the matter, other than Chen, Futo bothers me a lot too. Oh, but, since he owns the AskUdonge blog (as so highlighted on the list of artists on the scroll forum), I guess it's out of the question to shelve him.
Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project

Among the others to consider: Miko, Futo, Tojiko (maybe), Hatate, Nazrin, Iku, Eirin, Reisen II, Momiji, Yuyuko, and Flan. This isn't even the "mean" list. It's not counting the ones I don't like because of minor mistakes or style. These are the ones with glaring, visually offensive issues. Or they're just plain lazy.

You've still got a few artists open and probably a few more unread/future applications, and there's no reason other than being nice to keep some of these them on with a waiting list.

And seconding

First of all, I want to clarify... You guys realize that you're flaming at sketches, right? Sketches are meant to be guidelines for how the final result will generally look, and some are far better at it than others--but it's the final result that ultimately counts. Sketches are also very subject to change depending on the circumstances, such as spacing, who's willing to collaborate with whom, or even just new-found determination~

So I heard there was a quality check for the project... Are you guys going to chicken out now because it would be too mean to kick off people?

Well, here's me being a little meaner for you, pasu. If you have complaints, I suggest that you put them on the designated forum where the artists that you're complaining about will actually see them. If you want to stay here in your safe zone where it's likely none of them will care (and considering that all of them have been commenting over there instead of here, well, I think you get the picture), then that's your choice.

Or, better yet, pasu, if you have the energy in you to complain so much, how about redirecting that energy onto Shou? And I know, you aren't so happy about doing Shou because of a little mishap, etc. etc.... Well, why not get it together and actually show these artists what you're made of, thus perhaps motivating some of the ones you feel to be inferior into becoming superior? It's happened with others~! Just look at Kuma's Kisume~!

Or, is this just your stubbornness shining through all over again?  After all, you did so boldly announce:

I'll thank you to not call me stubborn for accepting my fate assigned touhou!~ I've already contacted the artist who'll be drawing murasa (who's beside Shou) and thus I'm okay with this arrangement, Shou will be just fine. Thanks again for offering though~

So, what's it going to be, pasu? Or, is that cute, little placeholder good enough for you? ;)

BL2W, with all due respect, while pasu may be acting a bit stiff over some things, I think pasu has some valid complaints, and generally your non-solution dismissal of concerns in this thread has me worried for this project.
Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project
Post by: pineyappled on April 09, 2013, 04:22:15 AM
flaming
Overly caustic, maybe. Flaming? No. And these complaints have nothing to do with the sketches because those mistakes will carry over.

Also, you're totally skimming over the issues and making a needless personal attack. The deadline is the end of August. It's still the first half of April. There's no need to rush at this point.
Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project

How about you stop shooting down criticism like everyone's wrong and you're right whenever it happens, BL2W?
I've been lurking the unnecessary forum you started for this(ignoring all criticism against it), and be it here or there all you do is sound condescending and ignore others in a very childish manner. Even going as far as trying to claim invalidity of the communication channel as an excuse to ignore what was said to you.
I have also watched constructive criticism to your art be tossed in the air like helium, and seeing as the criticized sketch seems to have made it into the scroll as is, guess stubborness prevailed.

On the actual art, and your 'these are just sketches !1' excuse, yes of course those are sketches. And within those sketches, there are those which are great, both artistically and conceptually, and there are those which plain suck on both parameters. Those are the ones being pointed out. Don't ignore it. Be mature and listen to the other artists.

Ok, to be fair, we have been going over the artists. And yes everything here is currently WIP (with the acception of a few who have completed thiers.) And I've been posting thier work in it's current form mainly as place holders to get a good idea of how I'm going to be managing the spacing of the scroll in due time.

And yes, we have been doing our share to go through and contact the artists and critique them on thier things they need. And in most cases we're hoping to get improvements from them in due time. This also includes the cases involving Momiji, Chen (especially because of the face) and Futo (which has raised concerned as well.) Otherwise, if there feels that such a problem arises that they can't be able to fix thier problems in due time. Then we may use some of the people in the waiting list to help sort things out. I've already got the feeling I'll be getting them to jump in sometime soon.

Also I'm going to have the same as everyone else here to you BL2W. As much as I appreciate you help and dedication. I would like you to please remember everyone on the team is an equal. Just like you and me, no one is above or below anyone here. I would like you to please remember that we are all here to work together and to please treat everyone with respect.

Which you just did, anyway. Thanks for the solid reply, Totaku.

Thanks for being civil as always.

But I'm going to be honest here. Vast improvement is unlikely for most people, and some of these are bad and will not be presentable by the deadline. Instead of waiting, let the other, already decent, artists have shots at it.

Time for week 3's report (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/post/48076551612/week-3-feedback-and-critiquing)!

Quote
The momentum of the project continues as the artist continue to experiment and try different ideas that were offered. So we been seeing some changes occur over time. Different ideas are taking place and different things are unfolding. And so far 60+ characters have been put on the scroll. And on top of that, backgrounds are starting to get planned.

To see this week's progress please check the scroll down below and click it.
(http://media.tumblr.com/6965540703cac8b9f05025a6cf82d1a8/tumblr_inline_mlbhx9w5sW1qz4rgp.png) (http://i.imgur.com/SSytjkD.jpg)
or you can click here (http://i.imgur.com/SSytjkD.jpg) or come to the forum for daily snapshots.

This week has been full of lots of help, advice and changes as you may have seen. And we try to change them as we see the feedback. Probably one of the more important critiques who showed up has been Syanas who's been helping all the fellow artist work as she been looking through the work on the scroll and fairly analyzing everyone on the scroll. Many of her suggestion have proven to be useful as you have seen some of the noted changes.

In other news, my father payed a visit when he heard about my project and offered me a rather large long piece of printing paper. It's about 200' in length, and 6" wide. It's not exactly going to be used for the scroll in the long run, but i can be used for test printing. The edges however are a little fringed so I don't know how it's going to turn out just yet. Hopefully I'll get to testing this soon.

I'm also going to go ahead and purchase some rice paper (http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discount-art-supplies/sumi-e-supplies/lian-zhens-chinese-painting-supplies/lian-zhens-traditional-rice-paper.htm) I found on an art website since they will serve for testing before I go and purchase the full roll.

On other news, we managed to pull in 3 more artists to help in the project.

Zucerrlo
Sixten
Tenkko

Now if there is anything I can add into the listing of things we need. It's going to be Background artists. Cause while the characters slots are full. Backgrounds are just starting and we could use some extra hands to help the current team. So if you have some background knowledge. Feel free to drop me a message or join the forum and express interest in wanting to join. And I'll proceed to evaluate and decide if you can join in background work. As for the others in the waiting list. Be patient, I'm still trying to see if there's a way to get you all in.

This pretty much concludes this week's update! Till next time!

And, uhhh, well, I'd like to apply for the waiting list (not sure if I'm in the right place however? Kinda new, sorry). While I don't have much Touhou art (almost none actually) I'd love to contribute somehow.

I'm waiting for some more completed, or at least tangible artwork from you before I take a closer look, since you planned on redoing both of your initial sketches and I've yet to see a decently defined Yuuka. Last I saw you were playing around with a few ideas and had a new Reimu going, but if you want some criticism on very rough sketches, it would probably be better to poke me on IRC.

Edit: If you actually do have some concrete sketches going for Yuuka, I apologize, since I haven't been catching up on the project in the past 2 weeks due to finals coming up soon. I should be relatively free again in about 3 weeks.

So, anyone want to know what I haven't updated in the last 4 weeks? Here's what's up in the recent blog post (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/post/50378738057/week-4-7-the-busy-month-and-hopeless-masqurade)!

Quote
Week 4-7 The Busy Month and Hopeless Masquerade

Well one must wonder why I haven't updated this for the last 4 weeks. Well the reason for this is a number of things have come along. The best way I can describe them is, dealing with things regarding to the scroll, dealing with my life as a teacher, and finally dealing with a week of power failure.

These events were unexpected but none the less through the month the project continues to move forward!

As of today, nearly all the characters have been put together in the scroll! Only a few artist remain that haven't.

(http://media.tumblr.com/19fdb91ccfe217ac73d0a4d3a680f08b/tumblr_inline_mmrfhtGZOe1qz4rgp.png) (http://i.imgur.com/oSGJPEI.jpg)

or as usual you can click here (http://i.imgur.com/oSGJPEI.jpg) or visit the forum for snapshots.

Anyways, this month is the month where everyone going to try to wrap up thier first drafts. Because It'll be needed to make sure I know exactly how thier placement will work to make life easier for the background team. Who will be working on background starting this month! There's been a number of artist who have joined since then as well as a number of changes that have occurred, but a good number of these is hard to count. But as it stands. The main part of the background team is now set in place. And now the artist are beginning thier work on the backgrounds. So sooner or later I will be adding these into the scroll once progress are made on these.

So what does mean for the artists who are still waiting?

Well here's the fun part! With Reitaisai coming up, ZUN will be releasing Hopeless Masquerade along with a demo of Double Dealer Character. What this means for waiting list artist and new artist alike is that there's going to be an open for new characters! At the moment, I can confirm that at least I will consider adding in Hopeless Masquerade since there will be only 1-2 characters to add. As for Double Dealer, I'm unsure because of a number of reasons pertaining to the fact it's a demo and how it'll affect the background team.

But some factors will be decided over the next week or so. But basically here's this! Artist are welcome to join if they're up to doing Hopeless Masqurade at the very least. Keep in mind, because of how close it'll fall to the first draft deadline it'll be very short period for the artist to work on said characters. So you'll have to be quick on this! So if you're up to it. Come over to the forum sign up and apply! (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php)

I'll be looking to include you in the list of applicants that want to attempt this.

Also I'm spending this month collecting fabric to test out on two different kinds of paper. This will take a little bit of time but by the end of the month, I should be able to know which Fabric I'll be choosing for the backing of the scroll.

Also that paper I order finally came in at the store! Which means I should be getting it delivered in 3-5 days from now. I'm looking forward to this!

Apparently I'm on the background team now. Here's what I got so far:

Concept of Phantasmagoria of Flower View background (no color yet) (http://www.houseofsixten.com/stealth/cirno/illusion/scrollbg3.jpg)
Mockup with characters (http://www.houseofsixten.com/stealth/cirno/illusion/scrollbg3_chara.jpg)
Cool background, will you use only black/white color for all backgrounds or you'll use a texture in the place of white/black?

I'm going to fill all the white space with color. If you visit the scroll forum (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/index.php?topic=106.0) you can see all the other in-progress backgrounds are in full color.

I'm going to go ahead and post up a little announcement for this week. And this is especially important because it'll invovle HM and DDC for any artist who haven't joined the bandwagon yet.

Quote
I haven't done an update this week because things have been slow. But it's mainly because in most places around the world, school is ending for some. So some people are wrapped up with trying to get thier last bit of work done before they have thier free time. This includes the artists too! So I'm not here to post any update for this week. But I decided take this little opportunity to go ahead and remind everyone about that today. Hopeless Masquerade and Double Dealing Characters will be out! And this means new characters. And from what I gathered, there will be 4 new characters in total. One from HM and 3 from DDC.

For the artists this will mean I'm going to give you a small opportunity to sign up if you are all interested in drawing these characters for the scroll. So I would like you to PM me, contact me, or come of the AWA forum (http://sentrygun.com/touhou/scroll/) in and let me know you're interested in the HM or DDC characters. If we contact you and let you know that you been selected to work on something you'll have to get to work on it right away because the time slot for first drafts for these characters will be very small. It'll probably fall on between the 7th or the 14th of June. But I'll expect you to be willing to jump on the character and draw them on the whim once I give you permission.

In the case of DDC characters, they will only be done as a subtle cameo since the full game isn't likely to come out before the final deadline. But I do expect HM's character to be done in full much like the others.

So once again, for any artist out there. This is your chance. Contact me as soon as possible because I plan to make a decision on this come around anywhere between Monday - Wednesday of the following week.

Around that time, I'll make an announcement along with this upcoming week's report.

Till next time

Are the HM and DDC characters available for new artists only?
Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project

On the most part yes. The list will start from the new artist who recently register and get accepted to be put in the waiting list and the artists that are currently in the waiting list. If there are are not enough meet the expectations. Then we'll proceed to artists that are currently in the team. ATM I got 9 people in the waiting list. And they're going to take higher priority since it would be nice to give those who've waited so long a chance to work on something.

That is correct, at this point all the characters / background artists have been picked. However, that doesn't mean we will not need the artist that join late. Since we may need them as back up inthe event of an unexpected event. (There's always a possibility it can happen) In fact, I'm trying to contact the remaining artist who haven't submitted thier work for the first draft week (which is this week!).

Anyways, I meant to post this, but there are things going on that I'm trying to work out with the DDC demo cast artist to help include thier pieces in as a cameo. But I'll go ahead and post this week's report.

Quote
As promised this week I would go ahead and make some decision on the artists that would be selected for drawing the characters from Hopeless Masquerade and Double Dealing Character. But before I get to that I want to go ahead and give you an update on the scroll's layout again since some people are starting to pick up motion now.

(http://media.tumblr.com/21cbc98458b8784e2b76d54be08102bc/tumblr_inline_mnlajnzvrd1qz4rgp.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/Ntw0T2M.jpg)

or if you like, you can download a larger scale version (https://www.dropbox.com/s/79mhwxnoerxnd58/Cscrollrulersmallquatrer.jpg) of it here or come to the forum for updates!

As you can see, I've done adjusting to the spacing around the characters once more. Mainly to make room for a few of the characters who haven't been added, and to attempt to make room for the HM and DDC cast.

So without further ado.. I want to go ahead and announce who's going to be drawing what.

Hata no Kokoro - Velonika
Wakasagihime - Hibarinrinrin
Seikibanki - Merp
Kagerou Imazumi - Uru

Congratulations to you all, for making the cut! And for the rest of the artists. I will inform you that currently, even though you haven't been selected, this doesn't mean that you might not get selected to do something. You never know what may come up!

As of this point, I'm going to make it clear that any artist who come to join as of now will be here for back up purposes in the events other artists drop out or things change. There's no way of knowing how things will go, so I'm going to ask you all to remain patient for the time begin.

This week I'll be going about making sure to contact everyone to try to remind them to get at least thier first draft done. Because the dead line is approaching and fast!

This means I need the remaining artist to try to push out thier work and get something in place by June 1st - 7th. So that they can be allowed to continue working on thier characters. (Otherwise, I'll have to make considerations.

And another big reminder. I have a good idea when the final pieces needs to be finished by. As of this point, the deadline for final pieces will be set for August 15th!

We are going to need the time following this to get the scroll finalized, printed, and mounted into place. (And mailed to an AWA staff attendee in the event something comes up)

So once again, I'm going to advice you, to the artist who haven't submitted something, get to work on your stuff and try to get something in by the deadline. And to the rest who haven't been selected, I ask you to be patient and watch warmly as anything could happen!

Till next week!

I'm going to give my Half Time report today on the scroll project!

Quote
So, with week over, we now venture into the second half of the project! In almost of course of 2 months, many of the artists have made significant progress. And as we currently stand, we now have almost every character placed into the scroll now! Out of all the artists, only one was unable to meet the deadline due to dropping out. And so I had to look into seeking who would best fit on Kyouko's slot now.

And so after taking a look through the lists of artists that we have and those who've contacted me over these last few days. I've decided to pull in Studio LG to work on Kyouko. He should be able to pull it off. He'll have till around the end of the month to work up a first draft for Kyouko.

For the time being here's the scroll layout as it stands now.

(http://media.tumblr.com/9918ec2064fbdd5b3047968cf4e556dc/tumblr_inline_mob5t7TJzE1qz4rgp.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/J6wmxul.jpg)

You can also download a full scale 72 DPI (https://www.dropbox.com/s/tex61klcdu89i1t/Cscrollrulersmallquatreralt.jpg) here or visit the forum.

I will be making contacts with the background team to get thier updates on the psd files so I can insert them into the scroll since there's been already a good amount of progress made there. So it should be about time for me to begin to include these in the scroll.

Now what about the artists that are still in waiting or wondering will they get to contribute? The answer to this is a likely yes. I'm going to be taking this week to evaluate over the work that everyone has contribute as of this point and find out which pieces are strongest, which ones need to be worked upon, and which ones may need another artist in the event of an emergency back up case. So I will be looking for artist to contribute to this since I may be pulling you in to assist in these matters. Plus I'm still looking to fulfill part of an original goal. But by all means, I'm won't be asking for the artist to not stop what they are working on if I pull in a back up. Since I'm willing to let them take the time to improve it and get it prepared since we don't know what may come up in the weeks to come.

On the other hand, I'm making sure to pull whatever steps are necessary to ensure this will become successful.

Speaking of making steps, I've done printing tests these last few days. Attempt to try to transfer the prints I've been working onto rice paper. To summaize the event, I learned this much...

Rice paper is too frail and fragile to work in a printer and thus I went out for an alternative, mulberry paper. Which is kind of an equivalent to rice paper, but a little more tougher. And so with this I finished up my first set of test prints.

The prints themselves were a success, as I did one grey scale and 3 colors pieces. And from what I have gathered from observing these pieces. I'm going to be asking all artist to take a good look at thier pieces and consider possibly darkening them a little bit and if needed to darken thier line art if necessary since I learned mulberry absorbs the color a bit so it looks slightly paler than what is shown originally in digital format. But to get s better idea of this, I'm going to try to reach the printing company and see if they can perform a small scale test print of the entire piece on thier printer so I can have a better idea how this will truly look.

As it stands right now, the paper of choice has been set. So this week I'll be doing my half time check up, working on trying to get the paper to mount on the fabric (and other fabric I purchase) and before too long make my purchase of the bolt of fabric that'll be used toward the final piece so I can send it to Drunk Aya for sewing.

So with that, the second half of the artist's part of the scroll project begins! Let's see how things go as we continue to make headway with the project!

Till next time.

It's time for Week 12's update! This week I begin to pursue the back up artists and collect fabric that I've been testing for the scroll!

Quote

Since we?re over half way done, here I?ve decided to go through this week contacting most of the artist. And I still some to go through. There?s been some surprising things that come up which is why I?ve decided to take on the task of bringing in back up artists for emergency cases.

But before I go on and explain about this let me go on and show you what?s going on as of this week?s update!

(http://media.tumblr.com/b495b2f45c8273fb1a570a9af6a49780/tumblr_inline_moo8l55QoI1qz4rgp.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/7jIaeQC.jpg)

You can also download the full 72 DPI version]https://www.dropbox.com/s/tex61klcdu89i1t/Cscrollrulersmallquatreralt.jpg]full 72 DPI version (https://www.dropbox.com/s/tex61klcdu89i1t/Cscrollrulersmallquatreralt.jpg) or come to the forum for updates.

As you probably can tell, the background team has been working on thier pieces over the last few month. They spent most of the first few months of the project planning things out and some even took the opportunity to get to work on thier parts. So far, what you see up here in terms of background are some of U-Joe, Sixten, and Shinigamiwyvern?s work. Some of these are still early drafts while others are complete. But either way as of this time, background work is now beginning to pick up momentum. So that means you can expect to see more of these popping up in the weeks to come.

Now let?s discuss about back up artists here. Basiclly I have some artist that have been sitting in the back line for some time and I?ve been looking to find out how I could incorporate them into this. But as of this point, I believe I have found my answer.

With one more artist this week announcing he dropped out. I?ve decided I use this moment to pull in back art artist to take on some important task work. I spent the first half of this project carefully evaluating people?s work and trying to decide if they will work on not. And eventually with this event, I decided to start putting it into effect.

So as of this point, back up artist are going to be brought into this project under the event I feel there are complications that arise that I feel I need to bring them in to ensure the project will be successful.

Because of this, I brought in the following artists:

Arufa: Toyosatormimi no Miko?s Artist
Tennko: Flandre?s Scarlet?s Artist
Fawreil: Mystia Lorlei?s back up artist

So with this, I?m making plans over the course of this week to continue with making contact with back up artist to see if I can fit them in potential slots. This means I?m going to give them a chance, but they may or may not make it in. It depends on what comes up over the course of the following weeks.

So once again, I?m going to encourage artist to join in as part of the back up ranks to help with the project to ensure everything will go smoothly. I?ll be giving everyone who hasn?t joined till July 15th to sign up for this since by then it?ll only be a month before art part of the project will come to a close. (I may still bring in some more if they can prove to be quick and efficient.)

On another bit of news. I?ve been going about collecting fabric to perform some testing. To decided which one will work for the scroll?s backing.

So far I?ve gotten a few choices I like so here they are.

http://media.tumblr.com/76497ffff44c5ed2f5bb59d1bfa45df8/tumblr_inline_mooalhG7oS1qz4rgp.jpg (http://media.tumblr.com/76497ffff44c5ed2f5bb59d1bfa45df8/tumblr_inline_mooalhG7oS1qz4rgp.jpg)

http://media.tumblr.com/0551b7c3904e92436e95f58f533ff95f/tumblr_inline_mooan6WIcH1qz4rgp.jpg (http://media.tumblr.com/0551b7c3904e92436e95f58f533ff95f/tumblr_inline_mooan6WIcH1qz4rgp.jpg)

These two stand out in my book. But I?m still going to spend another week collecting a few more pieces of fabric before making my final decision.

But once that?s settles, I?ll move on to making my bolt purchase of said fabric for the main work. As for now, this concludes my talk for this week. Be ready to have to see some more interesting updates come in the following week or so!

Till Next time,

-Totaku

Week 13's update is here!

Quote
With this last week I've been going all over the place talking to a number of artist trying to see how many might be interested in partaking in the project as a form of back up artist. Why am I doing this when I have a complete set of artist that are currently working on Touhou characters for the scroll as in?

It's because there's been a few cases that I've seen while working with the artist that has lead me to finally put the back up artists to use.

So more of less, the artists I'm bringing in are going to serve as a security measure to try to make sure the project is successfully completed during the time duration we have left.

So what are the back up artists going to be doing? They are going to be assigned a certain set of characters they will be working on based on thier preference and interview. They will mostly be put in places of:

1. Artist that drop out and/or haven't been present to make contact with me on a regular basis / show progress.

2. As mentioned before, serve as a blanket of security in case sudden changes come up.

3. If enough back ups meet the requirements and come to join the project. I might be able to fulfill the original goal of the project.

Before I go any further in explaining things here's a look at the scroll layout as of today!
(http://media.tumblr.com/47de611068b6127cdcf1a23733cf0f54/tumblr_inline_mp1cb1ci7X1qz4rgp.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/ci2mHfy.jpg)

You can also download the full 72 DPI version (https://www.dropbox.com/s/tex61klcdu89i1t/Cscrollrulersmallquatreralt.jpg) or come to the forum.

Basiclly I'm busy making preparations to set up the back up artists in various spots. Spots that need work, spots that need an extra layer of protection and if enough come in, I may assign them in spot to try to fulfill the original goal of one character / artist (exception of a few group characters like the prisimriver sisters for example)

Course the artist we have here at the moment will serve as the primary artists for the scroll. So they will still continue thier work as we stride toward the completion of the project. The back ups will be given a chance to get in if they can put the effort to thier work or an opportunity arises for them.

Currently I've set up a few back up artists in the IN section because there is some need of some rework in that area and they are as follows:

xfreilschultz - Tewi Inaba
LohiAxel - Reisen Undongein
Doroya - Eirin Yagokoro
Montoya - (multipurpose back up)

There will be more additional artist pulled in depending on what I think needs to be done and / or how many I have. But this is the basic coverage point for the  time being.

If you want to have a chance to come in and join the project and back up the scroll artists, this is your chance! As you all have till July 15th to sign up! So contact me when you get the chance, because time is ticking away!

This week I will also be performing a bi-weekly as usual along with contacting the primary artist for thier files to make sure they are following the guidelines since I'm in the middle of making sure that they are keeping things on track so that their pieces will be as presentable as possible.

And one final note, I finally made a decision on the fabric that will be used for this project!

http://media.tumblr.com/f374931cc326e54d3ded353cf14cde8c/tumblr_inline_mp1ewroFl01qz4rgp.jpg

This lovely piece of fabric I found was located at a local private fabric store company. And I had a talk with the staff before selecting this. Pretty much the fabric is very light, has a color that changes from red to green depending on the angle the light hits it, and is made of polyester. I purchased a total of 8 yrds of it and will be preparing to ship this off to Drunk Aya to work on for the scroll. He will be purchasing a special made scroll bar that will fit the size of what it needed for the project.

As for me, I will be beginning my preparations soon on doing some test prints again from two companies that offered to print the layout. So look for results on this in the coming weeks.

Until next time!

-Totaku

And yes over the course of the next few weeks as time ticks on with art section of the project. I will be doing very extensive contacting with the current artist, back up artists, and I will be asking for files on a regular basis. And I will be setting up back up artists in sections that I feel may need help. Contacting me will be very important here.

This is also because I am currently making preparations to do a small scale print of the full version as explained earlier. And depending on what I learn from the print shop, adjustment may be required so be prepared to talk to me and work with me according to what I find out.

EDIT: Just looked back on this thread and noticed I've already offered just a few weeks back. DERP. Sorry, my mistake. Anyway, offer stands. :P

Well Gappy, if we need assistance I'll let you know. But I think everything it good.

Now as for what's been up? Well... I'm going to explain that the last few weeks have been a slight problem on my part. But thankfully I had Banzatou there to take care of concerning matter. So to explain what happen.

My computer's HD pretty much borked and it was slow. So I had to take it in for repairs. Thankfully Banzatou took stand in my place temporarly. After my computer got repaired, I been busy making a dash to contact everyone and try to make sure they were making progress with thier work.

Then I took to precaution to back up every main artist that haven't submitted thier pieces yet. As mentioned before, the main artist are still the first and foremost artist that will be presenting the scroll. But I have put back ups in place just in case something happens.

Then I put together an artist status chart as I check on thier progress so I can update and make sure everything is checking out clearly.

And now we are at this point where I did a print test which to this week's update

Quote
As I post this, I am currently now 31 years old now. But my birthday is besides the point since this project is still a priority as I keep tabs with the artists working on the project. We're still a ways before the closing point. But it's edging up pretty soon. And so the artists and background team works on thier final stretch of work. As the final two weeks are now upon the art portion of the project.

So without further ado, here's the layout in it's current form:

(http://media.tumblr.com/00119857bd94f1a17e145f6fef42708c/tumblr_inline_mr97nt9iFu1qz4rgp.jpg) (http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/220/d/3/08_09_13_awa_scroll72dpi_by_totaku-d6hazhs.jpg)

If you're having trouble viewing it you can click the link here (http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/220/d/3/08_09_13_awa_scroll72dpi_by_totaku-d6hazhs.jpg).

This week was spent contacting people to check up on thier progress and to try to get them to deliver thier pieces for the project. Part of the reason for this is because we'll soon be warping up the art portion of the project as it is only 2 weeks away!

So what will it mean for us now? At this point we should be gunning to finish up our pieces so that we have them ready. And also I will note the second reasons I'm urging people to push hard with thier pieces right now is because I've been busy doing print testing ATM

(http://media.tumblr.com/13c54c7cd88ee7ebddb51f58c1a094d4/tumblr_inline_mr994rDiJf1qz4rgp.jpg) (click to view)

I've been working to make sure that colors for the characters will be presentable which is part of the reason I've been conducting these test. The great news from the first shows that most of the colors worked out just fine. So there is little concern pertaining to the piece but only to a few which I have informed a few artist to perform color adjustments to ensure quality.

At the moment though the printer I used though will not be for the final print however because the print company's quality isn't at the level of expectations. However, will note that I do have someone who will be able to help with construction of the scroll for it's final print. But until I am given the ok to speak about her I must keep things under wraps for the time being.

I can however ensure, the print work for the project will be a certain for the final print. But there's a lot of details I'll cover of this in the weeks to come.

For now I will mention that at this point, I have backed up all remaining artists in the project using some new artists and older ones to ensure everything will come out smoothly. So we should be able to have this piece ready in time for sure!

With two weeks away we will be working hard and long but soon we should be done. And as usual I will be contacting the remaining artist and making sure all thier files are sent to make sure the final piece will be set in place!

Till next week people!

-Totaku

And yes as it stands right now. I do have a printing company that might be able to fulfill the needs of everything needed for this project. Which came as a nice surprise just yesterday. But I'm going to keep this under wraps till I finish my talks with her. But at the moment this is shaping up to be very promising! So stay tune for next week!

Ok and so we enter the final week of the art portion of the project! Here's week 20 of the AWA scroll project!

Quote
We're now reaching the closing point of the art portion of the project. In 7 days from now, everyone has to submit thier work and get it in place.

Because following this day, I'll be making preparations to take it to print!

So let's take a look at the scroll and where it stands right now.

(http://media.tumblr.com/646d195d27280474c919d9eab879cbd0/tumblr_inline_mrkm2rErKk1qz4rgp.jpg) (http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/227/9/8/08_15_13_awa_scroll_72dpi2_by_totaku-d6i8dse.jpg)

As it stands, there's 16 characters that remain to be completed. Most of them are near the point or in progress of being completed. I've notified the charater artists that I will be looking to get them ready in time for the second test print session.

So as a reminder: The second test print session is set for August 17th!

This print test is to ensure the quality of your work will be presentable on print. And I would suggest you get your pieces completed as much as possible during this point since I would like to point over what may need adjustments between the 17th and the 22nd.

In the background segment, most backgrounds are coming way through and the background team is working around the clock to get thier pieces completed. This even includes myself who is doing the credit room segment.

I plan to put heavy focus on this part of the team over the course of the weekend. And will see if they have thier pieces as well ready for second test printing as well.

An important note to also remind the character and background artists is I've made a lot of preparations in making sure all will go right. So I have gone thourgh a lot of effort to conduct as many back up plans as possible.

Because as mentioned I put a lot of trust in the primary artist to complete thier work. But I've made preparations in case things come up.

Overall though, I foresee the project reaching it's completion very soon.

So again, I want to remind all artist this important fact:

All pieces are due on the 22nd of August before 11:59 Central Time (6:59 GMT)

This is order to meet with the deadlines planned for printing. Because remember the whole point of this project we have been working on for the last 5 months was to create a collaborative piece to express our thanks for ZUN for his 10 + years of hard work he has put into the Touhou Project (since the start of the windows series)

The scroll will be prepared, printed and will be taken to the Anime Weekend Atlanta convention where ZUN will be present this year in Atlanta, Georgia to be presented as a gift to him.

I've worked hard with contacting people in the Atlanta to make the preparations to present ZUN his gift as well so as it stands, everything regarding how ZUN will receive the scroll at AWA has already been planned out.

Everything now comes down to the artist to do thier part. So I fully entrust that you, the artists, will all complete your work on time to go over and make the necessary adjustments so we can present ZUN what we as an international team of artist can do together!

I will be receiving the finished scroll piece from Drunk Aya this weekend and make plans to set it up for mounting following after the art potion is over.

Again, we are almost down to the finishing point of the project. And I will look forward to the final results of the project!

So without further ado, I salute you all and wish you all good luck as we make our way to the finish line.

Until next week, on the day of the deadline.

Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project (Final Phase is GO!)

Well guess what? We finished everything! It's now off to printing, mounting, and preparing for the con!

Quote
As of this morning around 5 AM, the final touches of the scroll layout have been completed. And thanks to the help of the team and me we managed to complete all presented objectives!

So without further ado here's the final version of the AWA Touhou Scroll Project Layout!

(http://media.tumblr.com/9125cf54ad3ec8c3162a1e7bc9daa3fe/tumblr_inline_mscqmcvHzU1qz4rgp.jpg) (http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/243/4/f/scroll_project_final_by_totaku-d6kgz14.jpg)

The Final Version of the Scroll Project Layout (http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/243/4/f/scroll_project_final_by_totaku-d6kgz14.jpg)

As of this point, this version is being sent to Chinanime and my father's workshop for the final prints. So there will be no more changes as of this point. As everything is now final and we will now be proceeding to the final phase of the project.

The final phase will be done mainly by me, Chinanime and Drunk-Aya.

As mentioned previously, Chinanime will be producing a professional grade scroll with the assistance of a Chinese scroll making company and be making arrangements to send it to the AWA staff once it is completed. This will be the scroll that will be presented to ZUN as his gift.

Meanwhile, me and Drunk-Aya will be working on the presentation version of the scroll that will be used mainly be presented at the AWA convention during several events for display purposes.

I will be providing updates on the construction section of the scroll as well as open up some additional things shortly in the process.

For now I want to once again thank everyone and congratulate everyone for working so hard on this. Because of all your effort, we managed to complete a huge massive collaboration project, which is no easy thing to do. With a total of 70 artists from all around the world we managed to even complete the entire Touhou cast of the windows series, (with even me including object cameos that represent the new faces that were introduced just shortly before the project's end!)

I'm not sure if I can there is any other way to describe this other than a massive success as of this point. So for now I leave this thread here to represent what we have successfully achieved. It's now onward to printing, prepping and mounting! The final step of the project! And for those that will be coming to AWA, I will be seeing you there since I will be booking a flight and heading there in time for the con!

Once again, I thank you all for you have done. We couldn't have achieved this without your help.

Also on another side of the news in terms of scroll construction:

Currently Drunk Aya has finished formatting the scroll out and will be making preparations to attach the fabric and fix up the fabric. He's been busy as of lately but currently he going to work on this especially during Labor Day weekend.

As of right now this is current pictures he sent of the scroll in progress:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2049824/New%20folder/IMG_2155.JPG
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2049824/New%20folder/IMG_2156.JPG

He's noted to me that as soon as it's done, he will be sending it through express mail to me.

For right now, I will be busy working with both Drunk Aya and Chinanime to make sure thier scrolls are coming along.

We are now in the final stretch! It won't be too much longer now.

Stay tune as I provide you more updates over the week. Also I may do some specials very soon since the main part of the project is over now.

So stay tuned, and until next time,

Ok I've done two things over this week.... starting with last sunday and moving on till now I've been running a special segment on the scroll project. Where I've been covering the characters and the histroy behind the artist and contributors of the project. There's a lot to cover here but so far I've got 4 parts up.

Special Character / Background Segment #1(Main / Misty Lake) (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/post/59900488863/awa-touhou-scroll-project-special-1-part-1-main-and)
Special Character / Background Segment #2 (SDM Interior) (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/post/60018772324/awa-touhou-scroll-project-special-1-part-2-scarlet)
Special Character / Background Segment #3 (PCB Segmemt) (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/post/60250524570/awa-touhou-scroll-project-special-1-part-3-perfect)
Special Character / Background Segment #4 (Outside World/ Kourindou Segment) (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/post/60563761857/awa-touhou-scroll-project-special-1-part-4-outside)

Moving onward today I did week 23's segment, where I show off the print and I confirm I'm coming to Atlanta!

Quote
This week has been a busy week for me since I have been working those special segments, but I didn?t forget the weekly reports. They?re just going to take place on the weekend now. Most of these weekly reports will be shorter now that the main of the project is over, but I still have things I plan to openly discuss.

For starters, this week has been about getting my print ready for the scroll. I?ve sent my files off to Chinanime so she can work on ZUN?s gift scroll for the project!

Meanwhile, I?ve enlisted my father?s help to get him to print out a 20 foot long print of the scroll layout. It took pretty much the entire week to get it printed and as of right now, I have the 2 prints of the scroll layout in my possession.

I used my father?s shop before to print the layout back in college, but as I learned 5 year makes a big difference.

The quality of these print I can say at the very least are good. They?re at least better than the company I enlisted before hand. They?ll do as long as these prints will be displayed from the distance (like 1 foot away at least)

I plan to double check with Chinanime?s prints to see what she?s got coming from her end (since I asked her to make some paper copies as well.) If they turn out better than my father?s prints I?ll request to have them sent my direction.

In the mean time let me show you what my print looks like (from a few snap shots I took from the very end of it)

Either way, one or the other will be used since there?s less than 3 weeks before the con.

Drunk Aya just informed me that he has completed the scroll itself and will be preparing to send it my direction via overnight delivery! So I should be expecting it very soon!

On other news, though, I?m all booked, and ready for my Atlanta trip! So I will be coming down there to the AWA convention! With the presentation scroll with me!

Overall, I?m very excited by this upcoming event because not only will I be able to have this scroll put up on display, but I will also be getting a chance to meeting some of the artists in the process at the con!

I will be trying to make preparations for this event since this will be my first con I will be attending let alone also the first time I?ve flown anywhere in my life in a long time.

There?s still a lot to do and the most challenging part of this project is about to start!

I have to make a decision soon and being prepping the prints for cutting before I can mount it. But it looks like I?ll be getting a start on this very soon now.

Stay tuned as I give another weekly report during this week. For now though keep your eyes open on the special segments since I?m still covering artists who help make this all possible.

Till next time folks!

I'd be damned if the Japanese internet doesn't catch wind of this during/after AWA.

Holy cow, that's impressive!  :toot:

I'd be damned if the Japanese internet doesn't catch wind of this during/after AWA.
Oh I'm certain they'll be talking about this probably once after ZUN blogs this at some point. XD

Anyways, let me go ahead and present to you this update it's got some big news:

Week 24: ZUN's gift scroll is offically ready! (http://awatouhouscrollproject.tumblr.com/post/61569858853/week-24-zuns-gift-scroll-is-now-offically-ready)

This week has been a very busy week for me so I didn?t post the weekly update on the weekend like I orginally planned, so to make to it I?ll be doing a series of mini updates over the course of this week (if things go well in my direction.

Anyways, lets get to the chase of the subject. I think I can safely say the title pretty much tells the whole story.

The gift scroll that?ll be given to ZUN is now officially compete and ready! Chinanime has worked hard over the last few weeks working with the scroll making company and she shared me some pictures of the final results?

All I can say is I?m overwhelmed by the work she and the company put into it! So here?s some pictures of ZUN?s gift scroll presented to me via Chinanime!

As I mentioned before I?m very overwhelmed by how professional Chinanime took this! This literally outclasses the presentation scroll by leaps and bounds.

As mentioned before, because of the rules of AWA have placed and how ZUN wants to handle being given the scroll. I will not be the one that?ll hand the scroll to him. But rather it?ll be the AWA Staff members who will be presenting him the gift we worked so hard for. There has been a lot of security precautions begin taken with ZUN at AWA since he is a ?Special Guest? at the convention so there?s only so many ways this can be handled.

Thankfully since this was announced and made aware to him month back he?s made enough time to prepare for this present.

So some may be wondering where the gift scroll is at right now?

Basically it?s still in production at the moment. I got the scroll from Drunk Aya and have been working on it and touching it up since there were loose seams and the ends seem to need some fixings, but I should be preparing a place to mount the scroll very shortly since I?ll need to cover the entire scroll in approximately 8 days.

It should be ready no doubt. But in case you?re wondering the presentation scroll will mainly be hung up on display during some parts of the con (during Touhou events since I got word the Touhou panel has the largest room of the whole con (the ball room). The gift scroll will be just handed to ZUN.

But here?s something else I want to point out to anyone that?s coming to the con.

If you happen to be an artist who worked on the scroll project, a major contributor, or someone I know, I will be have special offers available to those that come! Basically, they will be a 1/2 scale model of the scroll layout itself that I?ll give to those that worked or did major contributing, and perhaps if we have enough time, I would like to arrange a ?Scroll Artist Meeting? at some point during the con too!

How will I do this? I?ll be posting about this in the forum at some point because most of the arrangements will be done mostly through me (which I?ll give directions for)

What does this mean for the artists who can?t come to the con?

I will let know, do not worry you have not been forgotten but arrangements for this will have to be done post con!

Finally some of you may be wondering what happen to my special segments?

Well simply put, I?ve been caught up with work on the scroll and it?s eating up my time more quickly then I expected. As a result it?s been held back.

At this rate I?m going to make this announcement clear to all the artists participating.

If for some reason, I cannot complete all the segments on time before September 25th? All artist will full permission to post thier art work / backgrounds that they contributed to the project on the morning of that date!

I don?t like leaving people hanging, and because of the amount of work I have going on my plate right now, I do not know if I?ll have time to cover all grounds here. So instead of having everyone waiting forever to post thier art work. I rather have them go ahead and post thier work online by the mentioned date.

So yeah, if I don?t cover you by the 25th, go post your work! There?s will be no holding back by then!

But yeah, that?s it for now, I?m going to continue getting the scroll assembled for now and get another update ready in the following days..

Till then,

-Totaku

Title: Re: [Art/Project] The AWA Touhou Scroll Project (Now Atlanta-bound!)
Post by: Totaku on September 26, 2013, 07:55:05 PM
Ok guys, I'm off to Atlanta, but before I go, here's something for you all.

Week 25: Atlanta here I come!

Today will mark the day I take off from home and make my wait to Atlanta, Georgia! I have my stuff bagged up and ready. I have my clothes, my presentation scroll, and several other artistic goods ready for the trip.

So what will I be doing down in Atlanta?

A lot of sight seeing at the AWA convention, since this will be my first time going to a con, I will be wondering around exploring and getting a good idea what all will be avaliable for me to do! But I will note one thing I will be mainly focusing on while down there.

Touhou related events!

These will be my primary focus while down at the con because I have alot of things to prepare for since this occasion will be very important. Many of the events will be significant at the con since there will be talk about the scroll and all ZUN while I?m down there.

What kind of events will there be down there that are Touhou related?

Starting on Friday Evening, there will be the ZUN interview that?ll take place. Several communitieswill have a representative come down and ask ZUN questions that he will answer regarding himself, Touhou Project, and so forth. So we will be getting ready for a lot of juicy info from that!

Saturday at 10-11 will be the Touhou Cosplay photoshoot where all the Touhou fans will come together in thier cosplay for photoshoots!

12:30 -2:30 is the big event: The Touhou Project Panel! Here we will discuss about Touhou in general, and all the fancy works to boot. To top it all off, I will be holding a speech at the panel where I will be discussing the scroll project there!

2:30-4:00 will be the Touhou Trivia Panel, where your knowledge of Touhou will be tested and you may win prizes!

4:00-5:00 will be gaming with ZUN where we the fans will challenge ourselves to playing a Touhou game and see how we stand up to it while ZUN dishes out his humor upon how bad we play. (If I get picked to play DDC, watch me fail badly. lololol)

Sunday will have the following activities:

AWA Touhou Festival: Opening Ceremonies ? 10-10:30a: [Official Description] It?s time for AWA?s first-ever Touhou Festival, and you?ve been invited to attend! To begin our block of events, we will have our opening ceremonies, Touhou gaming tournament signups, and Touhou swap meet preparation. Be sure you?re up bright and early!

AWA Touhou Festival: Swap Meet ? 10:30-11a: [Official Description] Got some Touhou stuff lying around that you?ve been meaning to get rid of? Maybe someone has that elusive Suwako you?ve been looking for while you have that amazing Flandre they want? Come to our Touhou swap meet, show off your goods, and trade with fellow Touhou fans! You might even find something you?ve never seen or heard before!

AWA Touhou Festival: PoFV Tournament ? 11a-12p: [Official Description] Test your dodging skills in this split-screen danmaku game and dim the dreams of your friends and foes alike as you aim for the top! No bombs, Merlin only, Stage Sign「Final Destination」.

AWA Touhou Festival: HM Tournament ? 12-1p: [Official Description] Choose your Touhou, beat the other Touhous, and gain the respect of the people in ZUN and TasoFro?s newest fighting entry to the series! Now with playable Kokoro!

AWA Touhou Festival: Gensokyo All-Stars Music Set feat. DJ Quietly ? 1-2p: [Official Description] Finishing off the Touhou block party will be a nonstop, high-energy live music event with DJ Quietly. Not unlike his Gensokyo All-Stars live streaming events, he?ll be playing all sorts of doujin remixes of your favorite Touhou songs while listeners can share their love of those Gensou sounds. We?ll end the set with our closing ceremony and send you off with memories we hope you won?t ever forget!

What will I be doing with my version of the scroll again (The presentation version) It will be hung up on display during the AWA Touhou Panel. As mentioned though, it doesn?t compare to the one that?s ZUN?s gift, that?s the one that REALLY matters. But this one will be mainly put up for people to view during the panel.

And ZUN?s Gift Scroll?

That will be taken care of by Chinanime and the AWA staff, they will be the one that?ll make arrangments to make sure this the transaction with of the gift is done so ZUN can be given the scroll that we worked on.

Will I be there to see them give ZUN the gift scroll?

That will depend on what ZUN wants. He may do this publicly or privately. And if I?m allowed to come see the event, I will liekly be notified, but this enitirely rests on ZUN and the AWA staff to let me know about this and how it?ll be handled.

Will I have offers for anyone coming to the con?

If you?re an artist / major contributor from the scroll project, yes! I will have some offers available that I?ll be willing to help take care of while you are there. Because you all deserve it and I?m willing to present to you thrse gifts as soon as I know if you?re coming to the con. They range from a 1/2 scale of the scroll layout to a special meeting we will be having. But it?ll only be an invitation related event for the artist that I will be there.

For those that aren?t coming, don?t worry I got some stuff for you coming after the con!

But for now I need to go ahead and end this chit chat, because I?m heading off to AWA now! I will be seeing you after the con guys!

Till after AWA guys,

-Totaku

P.S. All artists can post thier work they did on the project online now! Go for it!

Back from the con and all I can say ATM is one thing:

FLAWLESS VICTORY!!!

Well people I have returned! I'm a little bit tired but I'm now here. And if you haven't seen it on the web already for those who didn't go.... here it is!

This was a shocking surprise just how well it all went! The con itself was a massive success of unimaginable proportions.

What you have before you is the official picture that was taken by the AWA staff that was given by ZUN which he posted online late during the convention.

This was an overwhelming experience for myself and for most of the people who came to the con to see ZUN. But I will tell you this. This con has an amazing story that goes with it all. Too big to be put in a single post.

I will be talking about the entire story of my experience with the con, as well as the fated day ZUN was presented the scroll in front off many of his Touhou fans.

All I can say is ZUN is overall very pleased with what he has seen and loves his present that all of us worked on. Thanks to this, I can only say this was an overall MASSIVE success. ZUN has been overwhelmed by his supporters he now know exists in the US.

And it couldn't be done without you all! Once again, thanks for all the time, effort, and energy you all put into this because this project was a huge success and we were able to present this gift to ZUN thanks to everyone, the artists, the contributors, and the supporters who helped me all along the way! This couldn't be done without you all!

These next few days, I will cover my experience with the AWA convention, how the con turned out, my impression on the events, and my overall thoughts on my con experience! There will be a lot to explain, but the picture before you all represents the most important part of the event that stood out for the Scroll Project!

I shall be getting myself organized so that I can be able to share with you the whole story and will share you it as soon as possible.

Till update people!

Yes I'm glad it all did. I was a hard and complicated mess, but I managed to pull it all off.

Anyways, it's time for me to give everyone my report of my experience at the con.

Day 0 and Day 1 Report!

Today and for the few days, I will be covering my story on AWA and the events I witnessed while I traveled to Atlanta to the convention. Most of the stories will be from my perspective from what I saw, but I will try to cover the general stories in the process on somethings that happened as well.

So without further waiting let me tell you what happened at the con.

Day 0

So my adventure begins after I get to Atlanta International Airport. Since I come from the good ol' Heartland of Elvis Land (Memphis). I had no idea what to expect when I got there.

It turned out, the airport was 10 times the size of Memphis's airport. That alone blew me away. It made traveling a bit longer to reach baggage claim but thankfully, the airport has it's own mini subway system for that, which made the process quicker.

When I arrived to baggage claim I ran into a bit of a problem... my suit case was missing! And it was the suitcase that contained the presentation scroll!

I spent about a good 30 minutes looking for it since there was a big mess in terms making sure I knew where it was and how to get it. Airport staff notifed me that sometimes baggage can over flow and in those cases, they put some items on another belt so they directed me to the over flow belt which, thankfully that was where my case was.

Drunk Aya has already taken the a previous group that I was assigned to go with so he told me to wait for the big group that would be coming and I'll ride with them.

The big group eventually arrived and I got a meet a few friends I knew from IRC, Kilga, Purvis, Kirameki, and eventually Drunk Aya. We finally met in person and had a chance to talk. Overall it was nice to have a little talk with them though I just wanted to spend time relaxing after worrying about my suitcase.

Eventually the transportation arrive and we all got on and headed our way to the Emissary Suite, the hotel in which I would be staying for the duration of the con.

I got in and took the elevator up to the presidential suite where I was assigned my room, turned out I would be staying in room 227. When I got there, I met up with Chaore, Konstantin, and TSO's friend. So I begun to settle down and had a chance to talk with them for a bit.

I decided to contact Drunk Aya to discuss our plan for the presentation scroll since there was a problem I didn't bother to mention in my blogs about...

It turned out that while I was mounting the presentation scroll, Drunk Aya had forgotten to add two feet to the presentation scroll. Thus I ended up with a scroll that was 2 feet too short.

Drunk Aya brought his sowing machine to fix this as well as the spare. So I gave Drunk Aya the parts for the scroll and let him fix them up.

I decided to return to my room so I could have some time to talk, but before too long I was called by Mint to come meet him on the first floor.

So when I got down there I met him and got to greet each other and also met Onimaru in the process.

The main news that I was informed of was the Mint got a hold of Chinanime, and managed to the official scroll which he gave to the AWA staff that planned to present it to ZUN. This was great news for me because I knew that all was going well. So I continue to see what was going on and Onimaru invited me to take a tour of the con area. So I headed with him over to the Rennisance where he showed me the main location of the Dealer's Room, Artist's Alley, and the Ballroom (where some of the main Touhou events would be taking place).

Afterward, we decided to head back and I contact Drunk Aya. He notified me he finished adding the extra length and mounted the scroll in the process! So the presentation scroll was now ready.

But my night wasn't over yet. Because we to mount the spare! So I decided to go grab my extra copy, head up to the Presidential Suite and and start mounting there.

I spend a total of 5 hours on and off working on the mount. During the time I was up there, I got a chance to meet Ryo (Ayato's Boyfriend), Mamizou, and Overcoat.

By around 3 AM the back up presentation scroll was complete!

From there I decided it was time to go to bed, but I didn't have much time to really rest because I knew I would be getting up early because of my plans I would take care of first thing in the morning.... going to the dealers's room and getting my the official AWA ZUN T-shirt... in fact I didn't end up sleeping at all that night ultimately...

Day 1

As morning begin to dawn I got myself prepared and ready to take off to the con and decided to go with Kirameki to wait in line at the dealer's room. When we got there, the line was very short which was a good thing. So I knew I would be ready for the event. Kirameki and I chilled with a bunch of Touhou cosplayers while we waited in line. During the wait, SuperParadox called me and asked me if she could come into her Hotel room so she could get her cosplay ready.

So I ended up leaving my spot to go back to the hotel to let her in. After I arrived and let her in to get her cosplay ready we both headed out to the con since I served as her guide (sort of). But when we returned to the Dealer's Room... it was packed full!

It was still about an hour before the doors to the dealer's room would open but I knew it was going to be a long wait... During the wait though, something surprising happened...

ZUN showed up outside the line of the dealer's room! And hung out in the area for a few minutes as he posed and took some pictures with some Touhou cosplayers.

It was awesome to see him in person, but I was a bit afraid to get out of line since security around the area was strict so I might end up loosing the line if I did, so I chose to stay in place as I took this picture of him from the line (this was the best one of the batch)

Not too much later after ZUN left, another person came up with a mike and started to talk to everyone at the line. Mostly to help drum up enthusiasm, but out of no where he asks if anyone in the line were Attack on Titan cosplayers and Touhou cosplayers. And he told them all to come on up to him, I told Paradox to go on ahead and as it turned out... the man gave all the cosplayers early access to the dealer's room! Thus I was now in line waiting till the doors open for the rest of us non-cosplayers.

When they finally opened I got in line right away the AWA T-shirt booth. Again, this was everyone's stop there too! So the line was LONG!

Paradox got done early and I met her on the way to get my T-shirt, so I decided to ask her an important question.

"Is there's a limit to how many T-shirts we can get?"

"Yes, one-per customer"

So as it turns out my plan to get 3 T-shirts was out the window. Especially once after I got done buying my T-shirt, they checked my badge to make sure I was noted to got a T-shirt from them, pretty much rendering my unable to get any more.

I decided to go ahead with Paradox and start browsing the shop stands in the dealer's room.

We ultimately came across two shops that were my focus point at the con. Han De Ne and Chinanime!

Han De Ne, was where I bought my offical Touhou games at. I ended up buying DDC and IN while I was there!

And at Chinanime, this was where I met with Yiheng and talked to her about the official scroll and what Mint mentioned to me. She told me everything was ready and I asked if she had any of the mini scroll layouts.

She presented to me a number of them and showed me she had them all ready. So I asked if we could split them up and give them out to the artists, main contributors, and friends of mine who were at the con. She agreed and I was given 20 copies to distribute while she kept the remaining 20 for the time being.

After that, Super Paradox went out of the dealers room and I decided to go ahead and take some pictures of Touhou cosplayers while I had the time being.

(One of these cosplayers is Paradox [guess who it is?])

Most of the time was spent wondering about trying to figure out what to do and we ended up having lunch go to various places and taking small breaks at the hotel.

I'll be honest, thanks to the complete lack of sleep I had, I was feeling exhausted early on and didn't feel too good. But I did my best to hold out since I knew there would be some importance to the event.

Eventually later in the day, the con had it's first major ZUN event. "Renaissance Man, ZUN"

As expected the lines were packed and the numbers large and because the Kennesaw was a small room you had to get in line EARLY. Because if you weren't in line early you'd miss the event! Thankfully me and Paradox made it in line and into the show along with Kirameki and Konstantin and many other people I knew who were there.

We eventually took our seats and got to see ZUN come out as they started the panel.

The panel itself was very fun an interesting since they allowed people in the audience to ask questions to ZUN regarding the Touhou question. And there were many fascinating questions that were asked.

For a complete list, here's a link to the questions that were asked during the panel provided by Ruka.

http://rukasarisari.tumblr.com/post/62472030377/zun-q-a-at-anime-weekend-atlanta-sept-27-2013

Overall I had a blast for the first day and it was a very wonderful expeirence, but after all that I went through I was very tired. So I ended up going to sleep almost right away after returning to my Hotel room for the night.

This pretty much concludes my first day at the con. Tomorrow I will cover Day 2 of the con and the most important events from it!

Till next update people!

Hmm............Is Paradox the Koishi cosplayer?  :ohdear:

Hahaha nope, keep in mind that it could be from ANY of the cosplay pictures I posted. Nice try though, but that Koishi in there is another artist in the project.
Anyways let's continue onward word with covering Day 2 along with a bonus I forgot to include from Day 1. So let's continue....

As I continue on my story, I recall I left out an event from day one that followed the Kennesaw room meeting. So I thought it would be important to bring it up.

Day 1 Extra

After ZUN's interview sessions there was one thing I did forget to mention that followed the event. Kilga (Toyosatomimi no Miko cosplayer) and SilentSword (Youmu Cosplayer) rounded up as many of the cosplayers they could and begin to have them march thier way through the con. What for? It was interesting so me and Paradox followed them. And as it turned out we paraded our way into the mall right near the con!

This photo bearly even beings to describe what we witnessed but to summarize the event, imagine this: Imagine walking through the mall till you witness a large army of Touhou cosplay marching thier way down the mall's path way... 100s of them! Yes 100+ cosplayers marched thier way down the path of the mall all the way to the food court where everyone would settle down and eat.

Onimaru did note to me before that he seen a "Flood of Touhous" before, but it was only about 40 cosplayers. And this was back a year or two ago. This outclassed that by leaps and bounds.

Either way, it was a remarkable site and I enjoyed it every bit. Eventually after we had all eaten, we all made our way back to the con which following after that I called it a night and went to bed for tomorrow's important event!

Day 2

Saturday began with me waking up and having breakfast as usual. I had plans to come to the Tohuou photoshoot at the Ampitheater that day, but before I could Paradox contacted me and asked me if I was going to wait for her so I stayed behind to wait for her to come to the room, but as it turned out there was a change of plans apperently she had already prepared her cosplay in advance and came to the Cobb Suite. So I ended up leaving the room sometime after the photoshoot had started and I had to make my way to the Cobb.

Skipping past the Ampitheather, I noticed the large number of cosplays present at the place. I was remarkable but before I could settled down, I had to find Paradox first.

In the end it turned out she made her way to the Ampitheather and so I had to end up coming back to the area to find out they had already started the group photo shoot session. I didn't catch most of it, but to summarize it mainly had Kilga line up people from different groups of the series. Starting with the main characters, and going on from EoSD all the way to DDC's cosplay.

I only made it torward the end of the photoshoot. So I managed to capture MoF onward.

Here's a few of the good shots I took from the photo shoot.

What I did catch of it was a blast! But soon after the photoshoot was over we had to get ready for the con's big event:

The Tohou Fan Panel

This would take place in the ballroom which was 5 times the size of the Kennesaw room. So you were more likely to get in and since Touhou was the main attraction at the con it was pretty much the main place to be.

As usual the lines were very long as you'd expect. Thankfully I was able to make it in though and took my seat. Turned out this event was going to be very interesting since it wasn't going to be a typical Touhou Panel. It was less about what is Touhou and more about the fans and the community that makes it up! Most of it had people that represented different parts of the Touhou community that came from different parts of the US as well as people who flew in from other parts of the world!

We also went over a few noted facts about last year's con in the process with some familiar references to some cookies...

http://media.tumblr.com/0992a4642bdc463e61b8fb08b00790d3/tumblr_inline_mu1ozioQER1rixlbg.jpg

http://media.tumblr.com/2c8972d0ad88816797d748652517a081/tumblr_inline_mu1p0hskMC1rixlbg.jpg

(Most of it were jokes though. :v)

As the con continues on, we eventuall got to the special guest panel. These included Overcoat of Touhou Raido, Ryou of Yellow Zebra, and eventually me and Stephen.

As you know, I was the main manager of the Touhou Scroll Project, but in case you're wondering Stephen was a representative of another project that was taking place else where. A book project known as "Letters to ZUN".

While most of the guest speakers got thier time to speak. When it came to my turn to perform my speech I went ahead and being to talk while the  folks about a short history about the scroll as the panel unraveled the presentation scroll in front of them.
The excitement of the people roared upon the unraveling of the scroll. It was amazing to see everyone's reaction upon showing this to the audience. I was asked to hurry along so I tried to briefly run through the names of those who were invovled that were present in the con. But due to time constrains, I didn't even get enough time to cover them all and the book Stephen brought didn't get much coverage either sadly. This was mainly because they had to rush for the next panel so they had to wrap things up to get it all ready. (Don't worry though, this would all be made up soon enough)

Touhou Trivia Panel

This panel was rather simple. It mainy focused on doing trivia related questions on the Touhou series or Touhou music. The questions ranged from easy to hard. I tried to do my best to score a prize, but none of my cases was I selected to go up for a chance to answer any of the questions.

The most notable highlight was around the end of the panel though. Since there was complications with the previous question. (Name three oni from the Touhou series. [Supposely the answer they were looking for was Suika, Yuugi, and Seija <Seija is techincally wrong>] They decided to ask someone from the audience if they could come up with a hard level question.

BL2W darts up on the stage and shouts out he has one and begins to ask the question: Which enemy did Reimu encounter that in the series that was the only enemy Reimu feared both before and after the battle?

The Answer: The Five Magic Stones

This rewarded the answerer and BL2W thier golden tickets to get thier stuff signed by ZUN! What a way to end the panel!

Gaming with ZUN and the Revealing of the Scroll

With the trivia panel closed, the next ZUN event was taking place. In this panel one person was selected to take on the challnege of playing DDC while ZUN and everyone else watched.

But before that panel got started the panelist asked ZUN if wanted to see a surprised they brought for him. It was rather big, but they figured he would like it.

Just then, someone brought in a box (the very same one I mentioned on the blog here.) And as it turned out... the surprise was the revealed to ZUN the official version of the Scroll Project! I think the best way to summarize it is through this video (courtesy of Ruka)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJuVvgsr_O4

All I can say is, the timing of the presentation was remarkable and I tried to get a good shot at it, but I will admit, I was a little nervous with out the staff was handling the scroll at first and I got a little shaky but they managed to right themselves up.

Once the scroll was unraveled, ZUN ran back and forth to look at the entire layout and you could see from his movement he was amazed by the presentation of the scroll. When the staff asked him what did he thing, he said three simple words in English... "Long... Beautiful... Yes"

Those words were more than enough for me to realize that our job has been completed successfully and with a magnificent impression that he would remember for a long time. ZUN loved the scroll, and he loved that we had put so much love and effort into it.

Thus, our mission was major success!

Once that was done they asked for the whole community to come up to get thier picture taken. Ryou told me to get into the picture. I knew I needed to get in so I darted in as soon as I could and got in right behind ZUN to pose for the camrea. As shown in the picutre back in week 26's report, it was a sight to remember....

When all was done we all went back to our seats except for Ryou and me, and I sat by to take pictures of the panel as the player attempted to play DDC. He was given hard difficulty and played as Sakuya.

Overall, considering the difficulty, he did ok, but I can tell he had difficult since he was not doing as well as he could of been. But let's face it, he was under a lot of pressure. He was infront of a full audience, plus ZUN sitting beside him, making witty remarks.

Thankfully though he was able to complete DDC, but sadly didn't 1CC it. I will say this much, what was most amusing of the panel was actually watching the gameplay of DDC and listening to the audience's reaction, especially during some of the gimmic spellcards such as Sekibanki's spellcards, Seija's spellcards, and Shinmyoumaru's "You grow bigger" spellcard.

It was an amusing sight to see.... if only he could of 1CC'd though.

Here's some snapshots of some gameplay from the event:

This was overall becoming a very terrific con, but the fun wasn't over!

After the gaming panel I had one more surprise in store for everyone that day!

I invited all the artist / major contributors / and friends of mine over for a big eat out at P.F. Change's Chinese Bistrol to celebrate the victory we had just accomplished!
Overall, Ruka, Overcoat, Onimaru, Everfeather, Freeze-Ex, SuperParadox, Konstantin, EverForzenMore, Mamizou, Fauxm, Yiheng of Chinanime, Ryou, and a few others came over for the big party.

Pretty much we all had a wonderful time as we sat down and discussed and enjoy the what had been accomplished and discussed other future plans.

Truly, it was a night to remember! After dinner, we pretty much called it a night and I returned to my room to go to sleep (after getting my boarding pass for tomorrow's flight back home).

This pretty much concludes day 2 of the convention.

Tomorrow I will be covering the final day and presenting a special segment the following day then I'll have a nice surprise for all the artists in this project. ^^

Till next update folks!

Yup I think that's a good way to express yourself. :P Anyways... I forgot to post day 3 + aftermath report!

So....

Day 3

Day 3 was a short day for me because I decided to take that day to wrap up things I would be doing at the con. With the victory of the scroll established most of my business was done, but before I left I wanted to enjoy what time I had left with the con.

For the morning I prepared for the Touhou opening event. Once again the lines were packed! But during the wait I got to snap a few screen shots of some cosplayers during the wait.

Eventually the ball room opened and I got to enter the event.

The space was rather open and in the middle of the room was the gaming area. As it turned out they were getting ready for the PoFV and HM tournament run.

During my visit I got to run into Suikasen and Teezan in the process so I decided to get a snapshot of the two together since I was preparing to leave soon.

The plan was to enjoy what I could  and get I could get before I headed off with Konstantin to the airport since he planned a shuttle from the hotel to the airport to come after the goodbye ZUN panel.

So during the tournament run I had to run back and forth between the dealer?s room to pick up the remaining copies of the mini scroll to take home. Why? I?ll be revealing this to the artists very soon?.

I also had to delver Freeze Ex his art gear he left behind by accident, and I also did a a little more shopping while there since I wanted to get a few more goods before my leave.

Also when I returned to the tournament panel. I found out Andrew got his Touhou Arcade panel up and running!

This machine was an amazing sight to see and I loved what I got to see of it. Apparently the machine was running back down in the arcade parlor back a few days ago, but I missed it so I didn?t know about it till now. Either way, from the looks of the prototype, it?s well made and loved the look of it. There?s some things Andrew talked to me about the machine that I may bring up to the artists soon! What is it? That?s something between me and the artists of the project.

I also got to meet Stephen while I was there and got to take a picture of the cover to his book before he passed it off to Mint.

This book has a significant importance at the con too just like the scroll project! But one there?s a little story behind this book too and I happen to be involved in this. How you may ask? Well I?ll tell you the story about this tomorrow actually! For now let me continue to discuss what happened at the con?

Pretty much the Freeze-Ex decided to participate in the HM tournament and he admited he didn?t think he win, but I did root for him! But during the tournament, Andrew asked me if he could have a chance to see the scroll one more time to take pictures. But I upped it one better? I took him, Suikasen, Teezan, Super Paradox and a few others to the dealer?s room to talk to Yiheng because?

She had a backup copy of the official scroll made for emergency cases. Thankfully it was not needed and thus I allowed Yiheng to keep this one. But since the crew was here I asked her to unroll it to show to everyone I brought so they could get thier snapshots of it and a good look at it for one last time. As expected, unrolling the scroll drew a crowd and it was nice to see how everyone was pleased to see this. Once again, I?m thankful everything worked out in the end.

Not too long after that though we had to skip going back to the tournament because we needed to get in line for the good bye ZUN panel AKA ?Sayonara AWA?

From what I gathered though, Freeze-Ex lost in an HM round and ultimately ZUN showed up at the panel to present the winner of PoFV and HM a golden ticket!

Sayonara AWA

In this final panel we had four Japanese special guest at the panel: ZUN, Asakawa Yuu, Iwata Mitsuo, and Toshio Furukawa. Most of the interivews and questions from this con centered around general questions about thier experience at the con or thier work. Overall though everyone of them had a wonderful experience here in the US and were looking forward to possibly more in the future.

There wasn?t much to cover here since it was mainly general stuff, but over all I can say it was a nice was to close out the day?

Following the panel I left and said my goodbyes as I went with Konstantin to get my belongings, and to take off to the airport with him, Overcoat and Mamizou.

I would be spending a few more hours at the airport as I awaited for my flight to come in but during the wait, Kilga showed up and we had a quick talk. Once again Kilga congratulated me for a job well done with the scroll and he asked? ?Great con, right??

"Yes, Great Con indeed!"

We parted out ways and eventually I took my flight back to the good ol? Heartland of Elvis, thus ending my journey at the con?.

Con Aftermath

Let?s face it, I was overwhelmed, pleased, excited and loved every bit of the AWA convention! I?m not sure how I can go about expressing how much I loved going to a con because this was my first. I hear that the con isn?t nearly this busy as it was this year making this con event much more significant than ever!

I had a blast over all and knowing that the 6 long month I spent pushing artists to work on thier art for the scroll project payed off cannot be more satisfying than I could ever imagine.

Truly, for a first con, it?ll be a con I will remember I as long as I live. Once again? I couldn?t have done this without the help of the 70 artists + the major contributors of this project. Everything turned out better than expected and I do not know how else to express my thanks other than giving a big thank you to everyone of you who made this happen.

If I ever take on another project and the time arises, I will contact you guys that are interested. I know this was a massively taxing project, but we stuck through it and achieved the impossible. We managed to present a completed huge collaboration work and present it to ZUN himself. And now he will be taking the scroll home with him to put up within his new office. I couldn?t have asked for any better.

So once again thank you all for all your hard work!

Goodies from the con

In case you?re wondering I got my self several offical Touhou games! Immaterial and Missing Power, Imperishable Night and Double Dealing Character. I also got me Patchucon and Chinanime?s CD that Freeze-Ex had a hand making the cover for, and finally obtained a Sanae Nendroid in the process!

Also snagged up an artbook from Chinanime, along with a few doujinshi to boot! I should note, I?m a sucker for KFC?s work, no surprise? :v

But yes, as of right now? this wraps up the con itself!

Tomorrow I will be covering a book I had a small hand in helping make possible to be given to ZUN? ?Letters to ZUN?

It?s a short and simple story about how I managed to make the presentation of this book possible for a group of artists.

Till tomorrow folks!

No problem Gappy, thanks for all the help along with everyone else.

I want to go ahead and take the liberty to inform everyone that tonight I will be on Touhou Tuesday! To discuss about the work invovled in the scroll project along with Yiheng of Chinanime!

Here's something I posted on the blog.

I guess you guys must be wondering what?s up with me as of lately. I still have lots to cover here and I been busy but I wanted to inform you all of something special as of today!

Tonight at 8 PM Eastern Time, I will be on Overcoat?s radio station AcredioRadio for Touhou Tuesday (http://areciboradio.com/)! Because this week me, Yiheng (the manager of Chinese / American circle Chinanime) and Overcoat are all going to sit down and talk all about the Touhou Scroll Project!

That?s right, this week the show will be covering me and Yiheng talking about what I underwent with the project, my experience with the project, my connection with Yiheng and how she helped out and ultimately what I will be doing in the future now that this project is over!

Touhou Tuesday airs every week on Tuesday at 8 PM Eastern Time, so feel free to check it out! Especially today since the focus is one the Touhou Scroll Project! Also feel free to follow Overcoat?s Tumblr (http://radioovercoat.tumblr.com/) as well

Till next time folks!
