Title: [challenge] Kaguya's next Impossible Request (ended)
Post by: Helepolis on February 02, 2012, 12:41:31 PM
Since this isn't exactly a forum wide challenge, I was heavily doubting whether to post in Moronic Colloseum or not. For now it is here until I get angry mob on my ass with pitchforks and danmaku. So yes, greetings people of lunatics, perfections and scoreruns. While I am not from Eientei (hail SDM), the princess has a new impossible request for you with a reward (No she won't marry you). The challenge is very simple:

Time out Tewi's last word 「Ancient Duper」 in Imperishable Night.

At the bottom the screen.

Rules
- No TAS, no forced slowdowns.
- You are allowed to make vertical movements if required for dodging, but you will stay as much as possible bottom (no need to hug perma)
- I don't care which girl you use.
- I don't care if you make it more crazy with no vertical or w/e as long as it is fair.

Reward
* Rewards will be something special and/or IPs depending on people their effort.

The judgement

Two people will be granted with a prize:
- Ran Yakumo, who efforted for 40min without complaining. (precious RL gift + IP)
- 'I have no name' for conducting "scientific" research.  (IP)

No.

// Jokes aside, I can give it around a hundred of more shots. But timing it out from the bottom is... impossible, at least with my skill level. And I believe one cannot read the waves fast enough to precisely dodge them. And safespotting stuff won't work, since Tewi moves and therefore randomizes the waves. '

So, I'd say that it won't be humanly possible.

Here's an ordinary timeout (http://replays.gensokyou.org/download.php?id=18511). The blue waves speed up to ridiculous levels so that even just dodging them alone from the bottom would be pretty hard.

Also survived 1 wave (http://replays.gensokyou.org/download.php?id=18512) at the bottom. Pure luck.

I dunno, I clicked around YouTube and it honestly doesn't look that terrible. It looks hard, yeah, but far from impossible. What are you guys moaning about? Surely the crowd on HME can rise to this challenge!

Although my first time seeing the card I dodged a wave at the bottom, but a timeout???????  No way.

THIS (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35410575/Replays/th8_08.rpy) is the farthest I have gotten.

. . .

Of course, it isn't exactly legit. I used the pause-unpause method, which got me as far as to survive five waves before slamming into a laser as it was powering down. The criss-crossing bullet speeds are ridiculous, and I definitely would not be capable of reaching this far by, well, normal means. Still, it is quite fun to watch, in my humble opinion.

Earth is pretty straightforward since it's very patterned, but each pot is centered on you and it's impossible to re-exit the pot once it starts, so you really have to move if you want to actually get each wave in. Takes a long time to finish though.

Really though people come on, you can do better than that.

I got through one wave, you can too! It only took 80 tries! Aren't hearty attempts things that make good things happen, even if they are short attempts?

So I decided to see what this entailed by TASing it.
33 in-game seconds later (165 realtime), I got hit.
At 1/5 speed.
This is impossible, as in completely impossible, not even funny to try barely possible by the skin of your teeth, completely and totally impossible for any human to do this without any slowdown.

Do we win if we last longer than anyone else? I can see maybe some form of competition happening in that case. A "who can survive the longest?" sort of thing.

EDIT: Two waves - http://replays.gensokyou.org/download.php?id=18535
I did all of the "dodging" at the bottom. ;)

Everything mentioned about 'impossible' was towards doing it without slowdown.
Also I only tried once because I was curious to see what it would entail, if I seriously wanted to time it out at the bottom (with TAS) then I'd have slowed it down further after the failed attempt.

The impossible request has ended.  I'll quote a line from BAiJR (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Bohemian_Archive_in_Japanese_Red/Tewi)

"It's not a scam! Aren't donations things that make good things happen, even if they are little offerings? Then, I can promise that at the moments they see me~"

Code: [Select]
Tewi: You seem unlikely to donate to me.
Aya: I won't be fooled so easily, you know.
Tewi: Ah, that's too bad. Even if you donate a little, a small happiness would be waiting for you.

I like how many people in this thread and on IRC were so protesting or responsive. It amused me in an ironic way.
"Helepolis, this is dumb."
"Omg lol."
"lolno."
"Dumb challenge."
(ry

Even dropping a subtle hint (in the OP), people still didn't seem to get it. And even if those people did, they obviously showed no effort. Which proves my personal opinion on the average type of people roaming the world of Touhou.

"But Helepolis, nobody cares!"
The point wasn't caring. Neither to see if someone was god-like to beat this card. The point was more like tossing in an impossible request and seeing what "fun" it would generate. There was none generated, because majority of the people are egoistic braggers who only know how to stroke their ego and not obviously care about community fun. But hey, that doesn't matter. There are people who know how to generate fun and they will be respected and rewarded proper.

I have nothing to complain. I knew majority would whine, QQ, complain (TEI-KAKU DOORI). My caring % is 0. I do what I do and this is what I do.

That's not very easy at all. I did do that on Normal a while ago because someone mentioned it once. Here's what it looks like. (http://replays.gensokyou.org/download.php?id=17618)

Also, if I can offer my opinion on this Tewi challenge, I think the reason people didn't enjoy it is because it's to hard. I can understand choosing something impossible, but this card basically just kills you instantly regardless of the player's input, so it's not like you're really playing the game.
Unless you do what I did but I don't think that counts.

Exactly, i was tempted to do it on lunatic...To which i got past the wave where its a mix of lasers (luck?)and streaming, but then lasers got me. However,  the wave with "green spirits" is impossible to pacify. (http://replays.gensokyou.org/download.php?id=18571) Though it was a good attempt to try get past the bullet+laser.

lol at the people going "nooo i missed it" immediately after the end and the purpose being revealed, way to look the same as the people complaining of difficulty

In any case, I'm quite sure the point of this actually being such an immeasurably impossible challenge is to level the playing field between the good and less-good players. If the challenge was actually feasible in some way, the Lunatics would almost certainly be the ones to finish first, which isn't the actual point of making the challenge.

Some of the challenges are just generic high-score challenges though.

At least it isn't the same every "week".

Let's make a list of challenges we'd like to see that aren't boring and generic  :)

Wishlist for coming special challenges:
-One horizontal movement direction restriction challenge with ReimuA in SA! Gap to move around the screen, this is basically no horizontal lite.
-UFO token gathering without summoning UFO's survival challenge! You lose if you summon a UFO, the one who gets the most tokens gathered wins, if equal amount, then it's determined by resources left, then score.

You-wishlist for special challenges:
-Max bombs used with minimal button presses challenge in SA with MarisaA! (requires you to use a keylogger to keep track of how many times you press buttons)
-Playing with eyes closed challenge! Rely on audio cues for survival. (Great if you're bored, go watch the replay file after you lose and laugh at yourself  :V )
-Don't use your hands for input challenge! Like Jaimers did in EoSD.

I think these two in particular make alot of sense if the goal is to "even the playing field" between lunatics and and easy mode players. They're sufficiently ridiculous to render previous experience far less relevent while still retaining a thread of feasibility.

- No-focus Double Spoiler or Shoot the Bullet.
- SA using Reimu C, and cannot use the right-hand side of the screen.
- Can play any game on any difficulty, but must do so while listening to Tom Jones' "What's New Pussycat?" at full volume and on continuous loop.
- Play using only one hand.
- Play while reciting, from memory, the Gettysburg Address, over and over.

For some silly special challenges:

 - TD spellcard scoring. Define some certain cards to be played in spell practice and scored as much as possible. Why Ten Desires? Cause it has spell practice, and you can score not only by capturing card fast but also by farming grey spirits by being close to boss.

 - lowest graze on stage. Define a certain stage from a certain game (except MoF). No matter of difficulty (of course all will choose easy) the player with lowest ammount of graze at the end of the stage wins. Bonus points of respect if it's done on normal or higher.

 - play some touhou in windowed mode with your mouse and onscreen keyboard lol

- SA using Reimu C, and cannot use the right-hand side of the screen.

These I like

The thing about the SA/Reimu C Lefty Challenge is, the Reimu C shot type is such that it should be conceivably possible to fire in any direction from any position (and you have a whole half of the screen to dodge within). The Lefty Challenge simply puts this to the test, in a way that while probably pretty difficult, shouldn't be impossible.

I think these two in particular make alot of sense if the goal is to "even the playing field" between lunatics and and easy mode players. They're sufficiently ridiculous to render previous experience far less relevent while still retaining a thread of feasibility.
I think the results of the "Play EoSD with your face" challenge showed that, that actually isn't so true :V I remember there was only a handful of people who 1cced it, including Jaimers and Baity, both of which are pretty highly skilled people. (well, and me, but) The results were, for the most part, not all that different from what would have happened if you asked people to just play lunatic normally.  Except I'd have an easier time beating easy with my face then lunatic normally.

The "With your eyes closed" might be more leveling of the field though. And lowest graze challenge sounds interesting.

I tried this with IN easy once.
Got to Stage 4  :V because memorization of stages, spawns, movement speeds, boss movement patterns, random element locations, etc.
Newer players don't have that.

Helepolis told me to post here and so I am posting here.

WHY DOES AUSTRALIA POST INSIST ON GIVING ME EVERYTHING AT 9AM? (Infinity notes that it actually arrived at 8:50AM, not 9AM.)
My mother got to the package first, and asked who it was from. I said a friend in the Netherlands. Then she asked why it came from Japan.
This also had me stumped until I actually opened the box.

There are too many Rans. They are all staring at me. WHICH ONE DO I CHOOSE?

It really is a precious gift. Cheers, Helepolis.
