Title: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Doll.S CUBE on July 26, 2011, 04:33:06 AM
Well, in the last games thread, I said I'll be getting this game started 3-5 days from yesterday but I seem to have time now so will be making this thread now for recruitment purpose since it might take long...

Anyway, this map is going to be a modern variant of Diplomacy set in 1994. This game is completely different from the game you all are used to playing because it'll have a new unit type called Wings, oh and it's bigger....anyway, the rules for the new unit and some notes for this map:

Quote
Rules of the new Wing unit:
  • They can be build on any supply center you own
  • They can move on any terrain, whether it's land or sea
  • They can move, hold and support like any other unit but they can't be convoyed
  • Wings cannot capture SCs, instead they 'Blockade' it. The Blockaded SCs still belongs to the nation last holding it but does not count towards victory for either nation until that blockade is removed
  • If a country has a SC blockaded, that country does not have to remove a unit until the second winter phase after that blockade is made (This one is not official since apparently there's different rules not listed in Jdip for what happens to units from a blockade, so I decided to go with this)
  • A blockade us only in effect if a Wing unit is on the SC at the end of every phase and if not, the SC will be no longer blockaded after that phase
  • In the beginning, no one owns any Wing units and they must be built from a SC if you have enough

Notes for this map:
  • Istanbul (Ist), Cairo (Cai) and Hamburg (Ham) act's just like Constantinople in standard diplomacy in that Fleets can pass through them to go to the other side by using the canals.
  • A Fleet unit can also move through Rostov (Ros) and Volga (Vol) to move to the Caspian Sea (CAS) and vice versa.
  • Iran (Irn), while having two coasts, can't have Fleets move through it and if you want to build a fleet there, please specify whether you want it built in the north or south coast.

The victory condition for this map is for a country to own 33 supply centers. All active players can agree on a draw if they think this condition can not be achieved.

All orders can be PMed to me or posted on this thread (PMed orders take priority over posted orders). Players can also PM each other or post in this thread to form alliances and such.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot this...here's the map I'll be using on this thread, hope it's small enough...

The nations are:

England (Blue) - PX with Bardiche as Seccond-in-Command

Spain (Pink) - Conqueror with Dormio as an underling.

French (Teal or Cyan) - Kasu

German (Gray) - Dorian.G

Poland (Red) - ActionDan

Italy (Light Green/Lime Green?) - Lady Lambdadelta

Ukraine (Purple) - Kitten4U

Russia (Green) - Schezo

Turkey (Yellow) -  Capt.h

Egypt (Olive...I think) - Shadoweh

Also, here's the best map I could find with all the names (Shortened and full):

(http://www.google.com.au/url?source=imglanding&ct=img&q=http://kirste.ch/diplomacy/variants/Modern2/cache/sampleMap.png&sa=X&ei=_UEuTv70GozUtQO_zpH-Dw&ved=0CAUQ8wc&usg=AFQjCNG8C012mUECTAswkeczaLeCVL3WWQ)

One more thing, I'll be doing a reporter/commentator style thing when this game gets started cause diplomacy games on this forum is too quiet and I'd like to add some flavour to it.

Also, can someone with a knowledge of this map tell me if I forget to include anything, cause I feel like I'm forgetting something......

Edit: Ah right, also if your new and wanting to try this out, here's the link to the rules of diplomacy (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Diplomacy/Rules).

So does this mean players can build armies/fleets on not-home supply centers?

Edit: Also, do you know if this map is balanced?

Hmm, no sorry, that was supposed to mean if you owned Iran and decide to build a Fleet unit on it.

As for the balance, this game was played a few times with and without Wing units allowed and was deemed a valid game, so I guess it's balanced....

And sure Capt.h.

Edit: Wait No, you can't. Urg, I keep forgetting there's no Austria....

An invalid order was sent and the person is offline currently so I can't contact that person now. I would continue this and just move that unit to more valid destination but it's my fault for leaving that order to do till today instead of doing it when I was sent it, so that I could have told the person about the invalid order sooner. So I'll be holding off the update until I get a reply from him.....which would probably take a couple of hours.....

Sorry for the inconvenience.  :(

Hmm, after receiving a PM, I'm thinking if 48 hours is enough. I mean, when I first thought of it, I was thinking it was enough time to send in your orders and such but then I remembered the vital part of diplomacy is the talk you all have with each other behind each others back. So, should the time limit for orders be increased or is 48 hours enough?

So, deadline for winter build phase will be 48 hours (Instead of 24 like I planned) from now which is 3:30pm Friday (GMT+10).

Also, needs more chatter in this thread.

Wait, why do we need 48 hours to send in builds again?

And we can build more than 3 units in one year on this map?

24 hours is enough for builds.

Also, you can only build fleets/armies in your home territories. However, you can build Wings anywhere. So yes, you can build a ton of units in one phase.

Uh no, you can only build wings in your home supply center like the other units. Also, if everyone send in there build order early, I'll update it early like I said...If I feel like it.....

Yeah uh DollS, that doesn't say anything about 'home supply center'. That's the point PX is bringing up. You should check if that's what they mean.

Dear Anne,
it's been about a year since I've seen you in person and the navy lifestyle is harsh. We've haven't set foot on land since we abondoned our port in Spain and these conditions are getting to me. I know they told us in the acedamy to expect to not see land even for a long time but I was never expecting it to be nearly a year. Oh how I miss you Anne and your feminine ways and your feminine looks and your feminine touch hmmm, Johnny always did look femine and-Oh, the captain seems to be calling us to the meeting room for something. Sweet Johnny is saying it's something about finally getting to land. I have to leave this message short for now but I will write to you again soon.

Signed your's dearly, Gregory.

Move orders for Spring 1995 are due 72 hours from now which is on Monday 3pm (GMT+10) but I'll be late on the update since I have class till 9:30PM on that day.

Something tells me things are gonna get tricky.

Also, I'm assuming that Wings can be dislodged through the normal means correct?  I'm not sure if that was mentioned or not, but I might've missed it if it was.

Actually I have one request:  Not that this is super important, but in addition to reasons why an order failed, could it be possible to also underline the failed order itself?  This is simply for clarity and an ease on the eyes.

>Saying that he c/p the order report.

I just typed it all by hand since that was a pain in the ass to fix.  And you can underline and italicize much easier if you hand type it with just ctrl u and ctrl i.

Anyways, if you are having trouble making reliable deadlines that you aren't around when they do roll around for, you're the mod, don't be afraid to schedule them to your leisure give or take the 72 hour mark or what ever when you post the deadline in thread.

I have a request:

Can we vote to not extend the deadline in the future? 72 hours is plenty of time to submit orders, and is already quite a bit longer than the originally planned 48 hour seasons.
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Schezo on August 12, 2011, 05:10:15 AM
Let me be maybe the first to say that deadlines get missed by people. :V  Quite often.

However I would say yes you can just go after 24 hours of no response and that the orders should be within a few hours of that warning anyway.

I still think 48 is fast, but 72 is pretty reasonable.  The amount of late orders we're getting is making me sadface
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Doll.S CUBE on August 12, 2011, 05:12:18 AM
Hmm, I guess so but then I feel mean....I think I'll shorten the extension to 6-9 hours. Also, going to prod that person which I should have done in the beginning  :V
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Schezo on August 12, 2011, 05:13:43 AM
I found prodding people an hour or two before deadline did wonders because if they already used their 70 hours, chances are the orders weren't coming in the next two.  Quit playin'.
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Conqueror on August 12, 2011, 05:18:03 AM
Prods just before or immediately after deadline are immensely useful. Sometimes, deadlines just sneak up on you and you don't even realize it until they're already passed.  :ohdear:

Captain's Log: Dormio Edition

This solitude. I can't stand it.
I feel as if the walls are beginning to close in on me.
I'm even hearing voic-
"Dude, get out of the fridge."
I said. I'm hearing voices in my head.
They can't possibly be real, for I am and always have been alone.
The insanity, it approaches me.
It tempts me with offers of escaping my personal hell.
I must resist. I am writing this log in an attempt to maintain what little sanity I have left.
However, I feel my body growing cold.
My limbs are numb, and I feel that I will not be mysel-
"Seriously, get out of the fridge. That can't possibly be good fo-"
SHUT THE HELL UP YOU FIGMENT OF MY IMAGINATION!
The voices, they do not stop.
Neither does this cold that is spreading through my body.
If I become something other than myself, I request that you put an end to me, my friend.
Godspeed Conqueror.

Also, who is supposed to be retreating and from where?

Why do I keep forgetting these things.....anyway, England has to retreat their fleet from Holland, Germany has to retreat their Fleet from Denmark and Army from Austria and Italy has to retreat their Fleet from TYR.

Hmm, I think I should explain this. While talking to PX about his orders, he's apparently going to be away for a while and with Bard missing, Hero is going to be taking Bards place and will be in charge of England for a while. So if you need to make deals with England after PX is gone, you have to send your PMs to Hero.....I feel weird explaining this, like I'm not supposed too.....

Is this weird?

Um, no

A player spot is not here to participate in a vital part of the game.  If there is someone else who will take over doing that, it needs to be common knowledge, since we could sit here like idiots trying to communicate with a player spot that isn't going to respond within the phase.  So yeah.

Hey DollS, what would you think of only allowing solo victories, or limited allied victories of ~2 people? The dynamics of Diplomacy changes completely when you allow allied victories of 4+ people.

Yeah, I'd like the draw condition to be limited to 2 people at most.

Quote from: From the OP
The victory condition for this map is for a country to own 33 supply centers. All active players can agree on a draw if they think this condition can not be achieved.

That means that if you are in a an alliance, you need to knock everyone off who's not in your alliance and then agree to a draw between the both of you. There is no limit.

Edit: Although if it's really obvious one player will win, you can't draw between your alliance and instead can give the victory to that player so we don't have to drag this out. Also, I encourage individual victory and more deception.

I think you guys missed something obvious. The condition only works if the victory can't be achieved, IE if it's impossible for people to move against each other, not if seven people want to win together. Otherwise the game could end before it started.

I request that all players wishing to betray their allies follow the proper ally betrayal protocols, in triplicate.

The proper betrayal protocols mandate that a player wishing to betray their allies state the names of each country the traitor country wishes to turn on, the turn of betrayal, the supply centers it intends to take on the turn of betrayal, the new allies of the traitor country, and the providences the traitor country's allies intends to take on the turn of betrayal. All betrayals must be formally announced in the game thread 1 game year prior to the betrayal. Furthermore, copies of the declaration of betrayal must be available in the national language of each party involved in the betrayal process in addition to French, English, and German.

Germany, would you like to initiate the proper ally betrayal protocols at this time?

In response to        Russia         turning on       Everyone        , protocol dictates that          Everyone          is permitted to create a declaration of war on        Russia         , effective one turn after the turn of betrayal.

All declarations of war must formally declare the allies of all allied nations involved in the conflict. Please list the allied nations to          Everyone         using the formal declaration of war font and size in alphabetical order, along with the formal complaint that necessitates a forceful response. Failure to do so violates formal war declaration protocols, which if not followed is punishable by a slap on the wrist.

It has been brought to our attention after what scientists are calling the Amazing WingTank Incident that many of the beleagured and war-torn nations wish this world war to end. On behalf of the Council of Egypt, Ukraine, Russia and Turkey, we are putting forth a motion that the war be declared over in a four-way tie between us. According to the rules this decision needs to be unanimous between all living countries.

Although I prefer never to leave a game unfinished, if the rest of the players really want to stop I'd rather not force people into a game that isn't fun for them. Please Confirm or Deny in thread if you agree.

##Confirm End Game

##Deny
Full speed ahead, we have plans to put in motion. It's not over till it's over etc.

If enough of the other players want out though, I suppose I can do that. Personally, I was still having fun, but I can understand if some other players aren't.

Yeah, if this game is really so unfun that you have to get the mods to step in it may just be better to move onto the next game.  I think I'll just host it so you won't have to put up with anymore Kitten shenanigans next game.

Does anyone have a particular map they'd like to play?

This is my stance also.  I've been defending the entire time this game with 5 territories while Russia and Ukraine, both better supplied and better positioned, have failed to critically breach my position.

@Shadpweh: Funny you should mention this when your block is under fire.  I'm sure you haven't forgotten these words have you?:

Quote
I think you guys missed something obvious. The condition only works if the victory can't be achieved, IE if it's impossible for people to move against each other, not if seven people want to win together. Otherwise the game could end before it started.

As you can see we are mobilizing against you, and even if you think this is a dead draw, that would mean victory.... for everybody.  I am assuming you are 100% serious with this post.

Quote from: Diplomacy Rulebook
OBJECT OF THE GAME
As soon as one Great Power controls 18 supply centers (33 in our current case), it?s considered to have gained control of Europe. The player representing that Great Power is the winner. However, players can end the game by agreement before a winner is determined. In this case, all players who still have pieces on the game board share equally in a draw.

##Veto

I would agree on a ?equal draw? but I will not surrender.
I think this ?Council of Egypt, Ukraine, Russia and Turkey? played the dominant role in making this game ?so unfun?, well shit happens but to declare them the winner to encourage such behavior is unacceptable.

Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Dorian White on September 02, 2011, 02:45:45 PM
A draw is technical seen neither win nor lose but that's just hairsplitting and beside the point anyway. The rules say that the game ends with one winner or equal for all who are still active.

If you want to end this game call it a draw, if not move on.
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Doll.S CUBE on September 02, 2011, 11:56:58 PM
What the others say are true, if you want to end this you have to get all active players to agree to a draw between you all, not for a vote to have one alliance block win. Also as I said before, if you want your alliance to win, destroy the others and declare a draw between those of your alliance. Sorry if I sound rude.

We don't want to end the game.  We were only offering it because it was apparently enough of an issue that Pesco had to get involved

Hmm, from what I see of this thread there wasn't any or much complaints for this game that could have made Pesco endorse for an end to the game. Did this happen in PMs or MotK's main IRC channel?
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94

Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Kitten4u on September 03, 2011, 12:20:38 AM
I'm not sure where all the discussion happened.  Pesco just queryed me over IRC yesterday saying that there was drama and stuff and that I should just give people the option to end the game and start the next one.  I'm still kind of pissed at the timing because it was just as they started to make some actual progress against us, but there's not much I can do when the mod tells me to. :/
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Doll.S CUBE on September 03, 2011, 12:33:28 AM
Well, there was always an option to end this game since the beginning but in a draw instead of one block winning. So I guess I'll wait for others input on what they want like Shadoweh asked but it will be a vote to end in a draw between all players not for a victory of one alliance block. Also if the reason for this is because of my delays and such, I'm sorry for that.

Deadline will be held off for a while till we sort this problem out.
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94

It has nothing to do with you, DollS. ^^; My apologies if you thought that. I have no intentions to declare a draw. There's little you can really do if the rest of the game decides to surrender to us though. You can't make them send in their moves. :V The impression of the request was that the other side considered the game unwinnable and effectively over already. I want to know if this is true.

Post by: Conqueror on September 08, 2011, 03:36:16 PM
Baked potatoes are delicious, and in any case it would explain why Dormio is so fixated on Egypt.

Speaking of vines...
Quote
Spanish wines are wines produced in the southwestern European country of Spain. Located on the Iberian Peninsula, Spain has over 2.9 million acres (over 1.17 million hectares) planted?making it the most widely planted wine producing nation but it is only the third largest producer of wine in the world, the largest being France followed by Italy. This is due, in part, to the very low yields and wide spacing of the old vines planted on the dry, infertile soil found in many Spanish wine regions. The country is ninth in worldwide consumptions with Spaniards drinking, on average, 10.06 gallons (38 liters) a year.

Following the unearthing of this interesting statistic, our immediate objective is to expand production so we can take our proper place as first. Next, we hereby designate A Bar as the PARTY ARMY, and so we shall concentrate on spreading festivities, good will, and complete and utter chaos to quiet and drab countries such as Ukraine. I'm sure they could always use a party. :3

So yeah, we can kill France in the next few turns. But Poland is screwed, that plus the retreat into Saxony means Germany is screwed, Italy is screwed, and then Spain and England will get overrun by the builds taken from the conquered countries. Till next game, till next game. But I think we're done with this one. Good for you Kittenblock, you win.

/me throws in the towel.

At this point I support a joint win for Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, and (grumble grumble) Egypt. There's really no point in dragging this out after this turn.

I would second that, since the only real alliance he could get was with me, and if Russia decides to do that, Poland can easily end them anyway so who wants to do that? :V
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Kitten4u on September 11, 2011, 03:52:46 AM
I disagree.  Poland is the gambit country.  They are in an excellent position to attack people if they are really good at the diplomacy portion of the game.  They can work with Russia, Ukraine, Germany or Italy fairly easily, granted the center countries may be harder to work with in the long run.  What made Poland so scrwed this game was that it was right in the middle of two alliances and therefore had no real chance to grow.

The reason why I find this game and the Kitten block so lame is one basic reason: The purpose of the game is to play to win. Before the game even started, they decided to troll everyone and end in a draw, while everyone else was trying to fulfill the wincon, thus ruining the game for everyone else.

First Dormio told K4u false info fall 1994. Then I got a whiff of what Russia was up to spring 97'.  Otherwise I did things that made sense for me.

Right, so here are most of the messages that I missed from before. I'm probably missing a bunch of stuff from #MotkTown or #shadowkittens but the log files for those channels are so huge that I'm not going to bother filtering through them. Teamspeak convos are also not included for obvious reasons.

http://www.quicktopic.com/46/H/xcnUaQyhC76Y - Miscellaneous Diplomacy logs

The first convos are group convos in one-off rooms in no particular order; following that are convos with other players not included in the previous QT, also in no particular order. Next, the QT contains all convos between me and Dormio, ordered chronologically. The last series of convos  (i.e. the one at the top) is just one that I found amusing, because we got called obvscum for some reason. >_>

Pretty sure no one is ever going to read these given how ridiculously fucking long the whole thing is, but I figured I'd include it for completeness's sake. Since the rest of you are lazy bums.

Next time I play this game (read: the very next oppurtunity), I'll use IRC for sure.  Kitten4U probably spent 1/2 her life trying to figure out how to conquer the world from all of capt.h's logs.

Capt.h, you shouldn't think I'm too honest.  I simply had no blatant reason to lie that game.  At the end though I totally forgot that the plane in the Baltic Sea could support an attack in Gda.  In hindsight I should have asked Dorian to use his plane to cut support.
Title: Re: Diplomacy: The Great War of '94
Post by: Kitten4u on September 11, 2011, 10:52:10 PM
Dorian and I agreed to a ceasefire, so he wasn't going to.  I did a lot of planning that turn to make sure Schezo was going to get the builds he needed and I was willing to heavily sacrifice my own position as you saw.  I don't know why you guys thought that turn worked out so well for me because, while it went well for Schezo, I thought it went pretty terribly for me. :V  Granted, I suppose you guys didn't know I couldn't retreat into Sax.

While I'm posting I might as well get this gripe out there too.  Yes, the Kittenblock existed, but I don't recall saying how big it was.  It was formed by some some early game shenanigans and I just decided I didn't want to murder Schezo or Shadoweh.  Meaning, yes, the Kittenblock consisted of Kitten4u, Schezo and Shadoweh.  Everyone else was set to die when it was convenient.  In other words, by most player's own words this game and actions in previous games everything I did and everything I was planning to do was perfectly reasonable.  And yet, I basically spent the entire game after people realized I could win with 4 people personally attacking me until I cried.  I can deal with being upset over what looked like an inevitable loss, but that is absolutely no reason to treat me like that.  Or anyone else for that matter.  It was disgusting and I couldn't even defend myself before now because I couldn't tell anyone I was going to backstab Capth.  The fact that people actually thought I would INTENTIONALLY ruin a game for the lulz is...I don't even have the words for it.

Okay, with ANGST done I want to end this on a more positive note.  Capth was a super awesome ally and I'd totally work with him again.  I'm not at all disappointed that he got to win with us and I never had to backstab him. <3

Finally, in regards to next game, I'll start it sometime this week.  I think we could all use a bit of a break after this, so it'll probably start later in the week.  I'm still open to map requests during that time.

To be fair, Kitten4u, if the game continued another season I was going to backstab you and Schezo in the fall, use Dorian's cease fire to try to convince Dan to side with me above Dorian over the Winter, and try to use Conq to keep Shadoweh out of it :V.

It was not a good plan and wasn't in my interest, and I only considered it to keep the game running. I would have probably been happy to work with you right up until the turn you asked for Serbia. And I would work with you again too.

To be fair, if I hadn't ragequit, I would have tried talking to capth again and then left Dorian to deal with France himself while we attacked Egypt, so that would have worked out nicely! Everyone wants to work with capth. @_@
