Welcome to the Cell Evolution Forum Competition, where you take control of a cell and progressively evolve it into something else!

This game is controlled by dice rolls and the players. Occasionally I'll make some events if I feel that the game is getting stale :3

This game will start when I have 5-8 players, but you can join in after the first round!

RULES
  • Every turn, you must pick a trait to evolve.
  • The trait must be reasonable for the stage of your creature. EX: No legs when single-celled.
  • You can sabotage others by giving them a -1, or help them with a +2. These are added to the rolls.
  • The trait you have picked will be affected by a dice roll. See below.
  • Occasionally, I'll roll a 1d6 for an event. Also see below
  • If you're a late-comer, you will get X traits (X = round # + 1) with no modifiers for free to catch up to the others.
  • Have fun, feel free to discuss things, and survive and thrive!
  • The trait must be reasonable in real life. (Thanks Miniking!)

Rolls
Traits
Uses 1d6
1: Inverted
2: Very bad effect
3: No effect
4: Not expected effect
5: Expected effect
6-7: Better than expected
8+: SUPER EVOLUTION (significantly better than expected)

Events
Uses 1d6
1-2: Bad event
3-4: No event
5-6: Good event

Endangerment Ranks
These ranks show how close to dying off your species is.
EX: Extinct. Sorry, you are out of the game.
CR: Critically endangered. You are close to extinction.
EN: Endangered. You will most likely live unless a bad event or another species goes for you.
VU: Vulnerable. You're safe, but you might die in the future.
NT: Near threatened. Your species is doing fine, but you shouldn't worry about it dying off
LC: Don't even bother worrying. It'll take a miracle for your species to die off from this rank.

Reproductive Systems
There are 2 types: Vertical and horizontal.
Vertical
Make a second trait vote, and roll for that trait, but you can't get -1 or +2 on this:
1: Opposite of what was intended
2: Slightly worse than what was intended
3: No effect
4: No effect
5: As intended
6: Better than intended

Horizontal
Take a trait that anther species has and roll with no modifiers:
1-3: No effect
4-6: Success

Now that the rules are out of the way, let's get to the story:

Round 0

After millions of years, the planet has finally reached a state of equilibrium. The climate changes have become less severe, and although it still goes well below zero in the winter and far above 50 degrees Celsius in the summer, life is slowly but surely taking a grasp. Eruptions and earthquakes are still fairly common and cause death to thousands of species every few months. However, this has only increased the pace of evolution, as organisms less fit to survive are completely wiped from the face of the planet.

The first and only species is Protobactum Thrivum, though this is surely only temporary.
Protobactum Thrivum is a simple Eukaryotic bacteria cell, consisting of only a nucleus and a membrane. It lives at the very bottom of the sea, feeding of the compounds that were created when the planet first formed. It makes energy by metabolizing glucose in its cytoplasm, a fairly inefficient process. Without chloroplasts or any DNA coding for chemosynthesis this organism is very dependent on its constantly changing environment, and is thus given the title of Endangered. It cannot move and can only hope that its food (random proteins and sugars) will be carried close enough by the currents to be engulfed.

Traits: None
Appearance: Doesn't form colonies and cannot be seen without a microscope.
Environment: Bottom of sea
Conservation Status: EN

NOTE: Every new player starts with this species.

0/10 not science related, adding to op

PRO TIP: You're literally a single cell floating in a nutrient soup. You can barely move, and you can barely sustain yourself by digesting food in the cytoplasm.

Remember guys, you can both call for a trait AND give someone a +2 or -1 in the same turn.

Right now, you guys better help each other out by throwing +2s everywhere on your turns

Round 1

As the planet starts to stabilize, the many bacteria and other organisms are starting to multiply.

Event: N/A. Too early in the game for that.

Miniking
Roll: 1 = 1 --> Opposite effect

The first specimen of Protobactum Parvusrex attempts to use its microtubes to create a flagellum. Unfortunately, this leads to many cilia all over the cell's surface. These are not energy efficient, and you could find a way to make energy more efficiently. (lol did you see what i did there?)

Traits: Cilia
Appearance: P. thrivum with cilia
Environment: Deep ocean
Conservation Status: EN

Mr_Bob
Roll: 3 +2 = 5 --> Expected effect

Protobacteum bobus, like P. parvusrex, attempts to stick its microtubes out of the cell for movement. In this case, it's cilia and they work. You now have a way to move around, but like P. parvusrex, you have no way of efficiently creating energy from the food you eat.

Traits: Cilia
Appearance: Same as P. Parvusrex
Environment: Deep ocean
Conservation Status: EN

Sirvup
Roll: 2 = 2 --> Very bad effect

While other cells are trying to find ways of movement, the P. purvis attempts to find a relationship with another species. Unfortunately, it turns out you are the worse off of the two and your relationship ends up with many P. purvis dying off.

Traits: Malicious relationship
Appearance: same as ancestors
Environment: Deep ocean
Conservation Status: CR

Ps
Roll: 4 = 4 --> Not expected effect

The P. pes, in reaction to the abundance of free food, attempts to evolve a process that allows it to gain more energy from digesting glucose. It works and you get 5 times the energy from glucose, but the byproducts turns out to be hydrogen peroxide. If you want your species to live, you must find a way to remove the peroxide from the cell.

Traits: More efficient glucose digestion
Appearance: same as ancestors
Environment: Deep ocean
Conservation Status: EN

Raitaki
Roll: 4 = 4 --> Not expected effect
How would you take in the water? and how to get it out? develop those first

The P. tonitus, in need for movement, tries to evolve a water pump to propel itself. There several things wrong, though. It ONLY develops small proteins that carry water in and out of the cell, and when the cell tries to propel itself, it must recharge since most of its energy was used up in propelling itself.

Traits: Energy-inefficient water propulsion
Appearance: same as ancestors
Environment: deep ocean
Conservation Status: EN

Kasu
Roll: 1 = 1 --> Opposite effect

In the P. kasum's haste to get more energy from glucose, it accidentally evolves a method to store energy using long glucose chains. Since all of the glucose absorbed is being dumped into these glucose chains, the P. kasum becomes an attractive source of energy for other cells. Once you can utilize these chains, you can find a way to generate even more energy from glucose.

Traits: The ability to convert glucose to glycogen/starch
Appearance: same as ancestors
Environment: Deep ocean
Conservation Status: CR

PX
Roll: 4 = 4

The P. Peksum initially finds out that there is strength in numbers, so the species multiplies into colonies of dozens of cells. Unfortunately, the process of dividing is very time-consuming and energy-intensive, so you should find a way to make energy.

Traits: Increased division
Appearance: Colonies look like blobs ~1 um.
Environment: Deep ocean
Conservation Status: VU (high number of individuals)

LaserTurtle
Roll: 5 = 5 --> Expected effect

The P. turturus develops a symbiotic relationship with a photosynthesizing bacteria, allowing the species to survive for a little longer in the dark depths of the deep ocean. If you want to be more efficient, you need to reach the surface.

Traits: Photosynthesis
Appearance: Green blob
Environment: Deep ocean
Conservation Status: VU

DNAbc
Roll: 3 = 3 --> no effect

The P. danabacus is still floating around the deep ocean, passively absorbing nutrients from the water.

Traits: none
Appearance: same as ancestors
Environment: deep ocean
Conservation Status: EN

Let's cannibalize P. kasum for all that energy in order to replenish numbers and develop more efficient use of energy. -1 to Protobacteum bobus because all that mobility is a difficulty and it is time for buckets of crabs.

In what cases can we use Vertical reproductions?  In lieu of an evolution roll? An additional roll for an existing trait?
Do I need to develop Glycolysis? Enzymes? Ways to manufacture proteins? Am I obsessing too much about mechanism and should just go for results?
