Welcome all artists and non-artists alike to the grand opening of the Maidens of the Kaleidoscope Visual Novel Project!
What is this project? Basically a chance for the community of MotK to work together and create Visual Novels over the course of the summer! (From now until the end of August)
Originally I made this thread (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8394.30.html) just to see if I could recruit a few artists to help me draw, but the amount of interest far exceeded my expectations. So for the past few weeks I?ve been thinking about how I was going to coordinate so many people for a small project like this. Of course there?s the chance that only a few of the people who offered their help would actually end up helping, but still I didn?t want to leave anyone out.
So here?s the deal: Anyone is allowed to help out, regardless of your skill level or artistic medium. How will this work out? Instead of striving simply striving for the goal, I want to focus just as much on the process of getting there. I want this to be a chance for anyone who is willing to put in the effort not only to be a part of the project, but to also improve on their own skills at the same time.
But how the hell is this going to be done? Everyone knows that the life and work of an artist is anything but easy. Creating art takes both time and motivation. If it weren?t for these obstacles then we?d all be happily chasing our dreams of being great artists. But reality hits us with many complications that take up our time, and when there?s finally nothing in our way, our greatest enemy becomes our own lack of motivation.
That?s where this project comes in. For the issue of time: I?ll be handling all time management and coordination of the project itself. You tell me your available work times and together we work out reasonable deadlines. Make sure you can meet each deadline though. While there won?t be any penalties or anything like that, simply ignoring deadlines defeats their purpose. However it is understandable that real life gets in the way of deadlines. What I will ask for however, is that if anything pops up you inform me as soon as you can. Communication is key.
For the issue of motivation: many of you already have great artistic potential, but lack the reason, confidence, or simply direction to bring out that potential. For this project I?ll be giving out small tasks on a consistent basis for each of you to work on, so you'll always have something to work on and that thing will be in the Visual Novel. However it won?t be as simple as ?okay work on this until it?s done and that?s it.? There will be a reasonable level of quality that is required for something to be included in the final product of a game, so expect to do many revisions and refinements of your work. Remember, we?re not just trying to get this done; we?re trying to get better as well.
The number one thing that we all need to focus on in order to be successful as a group is communication. The biggest reason a group project falls apart is lack of proper communication. As such, I?m going to try to maintain a high level of communication at all times over the course of this project. However, communication is a two way street as they say, so you'll have responsibility of being easily available for contact.
Now I?m not going to make any promises of instant success here. You'll need to work hard and I'm going to work you hard. I'll do my best to help keep you motivated and organized, so I'm going to expect that you work hard from your side as well. And even then with all things said and done there are still many ways things can end in failure. Still if nothing else, hopefully we?ll still have fun, improve our skills, and tighten the bonds of our community. /extremecheeseending BV

Nickname: The one that you want to go by for this project and for me to address you as
Abilities: The kind of art you can do including but not limited to: drawing portraits (complete or just line art), drawing backgrounds, photography (for backgrounds and stuff), digital coloring, digital manipulation (Photoshop skills), GUI art (buttons, windows, stuff like that), composing music, recording sound effects (need these too!), and voice acting (lower priority but still a possibility!).
Contact info: Very important if we want to have proper communication! MSN, Skype, facebook, e-mail, whatever! As long as it?s something that you use/check frequently so that we can always have a good way of staying connected.

Depending on what is needed, I could help with photography for backgrounds. I have quick access to scenery reaching from the old baroque buildings in my city to nice riverside views to woods to mountain-like surroundings. I have a rather good camera ready as well.

Uh, I have a *tiny bit* of Flash, Photoshop and Fireworks skillz, and you know my art but you also know how much I take to get something digital done.
My tablet is also kinda fucked up, I've been drawing stuff just on paper recently. It's much more fun too.
Problem with that is my mother took the scanner away, so I can really scan anything, and do any kind of digital work on it so :fail:
I dunno how I can help.

I can do SFX [depending on what kind of SFX you want, I may or may not be able to deliver], photography (depending on what kind of photos you want), POSSIBLY drawing backgrounds (depending on what kind of backgrounds you want) though that will mostly be limited to concept art - I'm horrible with digital colouring and rendering - and that'll probably be the extent of it.

I have experience in many graphics programs (Photoshop, Pixelmator, Paint.NET, GIMP, Flash), primarily with manipulation and pixel art.
I also draw on paper, but even though I have a tablet I tend to not draw directly into a program. Doesn't feel the same.
However, my interest lies more in the composing bit. I use Logic (general), Sonar (MIDI), and tend to write the main stuff in OpenMPT (tracker) or with a MIDI controller keyboard. I'd also like to know what will be in store so that I can get a good idea of what is expected here.
As for other things such as VA work, it seems interesting but I'll pass.

You mean Duality right? How far is the script on that? Right now I'm using sutff that's already written so that I can just focus on art and programming, but if you guys finish the script then I could help out.

The kinds of stories we'll be doing are mostly going to be Touhou fanfiction that's already written by members on this board or other boards. We'll discuss more about the kinds of music needed specifically once I have storyboards worked out. But an example one of the things we'll be working on is a remake of this: (mildly NSFW btw) (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,5728.0.html) I'll update the OP with more on what we'll be doing in a bit.

Roger! I already joined in that old thread, but I guess I'll have to introduce myself here too!
I go by the nickname of cYsmix, I'm an experienced arranger and have been making touhou remixes for about 4 years now. I'll be making music for this project I guess, but I'm kinda into drawing as well. I don't know if this VN will have original BGM or just touhou arranges, but I'm up for both. I've composed original songs before.
I'm a jack of all trades when it comes to music, I've made music in so many different genres that I can't really make up my mind of which genre I should stick to, most of my music is electro/trance music, but I've heard that fit well in VNs if I do it the right way!

While I do prefer digital artists, you could always draw on paper and then either you or someone else could trace over it on a computer. Or you could just take this as a chance to practice drawing more.

Are you going to be rewriting these: Touhou Love Stories - The Bad Ends: http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Fiction_found_on_imageboards (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Fiction_found_on_imageboards) Cause I read through some of em and the majority of them don't quite seem like VN material. Okay trying to split up the tasks is proving to be a more difficult decision than I had originally expected. From what I've seen, art styles vary quite wildly, so either we have a mixed set of cutins, or I force everyone to adapt a certain style, and to be honest neither option sounds too appealing. On top of that we have the issue of having 5 characters that need cutins and more than 5 able artists, and I couldn't really come up with a fair way of spliting up the tasks.
So I thought about it for a bit and came up with a crazy idea that just might pay off over the long run. Most of the artists here have expressed interest in doing cutins over other stuff, which is fine by me since I can just get backgrounds by taking photographs in real life and off the internet and photoshop them up a bit and no one would really mind (hell most VNs either do this, or they take a picture and then trace on top) And since each of you have your own style of drawing I came up with this: Instead of splitting tasks within a game, I assign one artist per game.
A hell of a lot more work? Yes, but I think it could pay off in the long run. This way everyone gets to draw in the way they're most comfortable with and more stories get to be made into visual novels.
On the other hand, games will take longer to complete, which isn't that much of an issue since we aren't on a strict timeline here, and each artist will have to draw a whole set of cutins, but like I just said no rush plus cutins don't take that long to draw relatively speaking. The biggest downside is it obviously sets us back a bit and I now have to go scavenging for more stories but hey we've barely started and I'm willing to do some extra work to get us started on the right foot. 8)
This applies more to artists than musicians since a variety of musical styles in a single game can actually be a good thing, while it can stand out in a bad way with art.
So basically the plan is I'm going to go find some more fics for us to work on and make lists of cutins and stuff they need. Then I'll post a big list of all the stories I've picked and some info on each like a short summary, wordcount, and generally how much stuff you'll probably need to draw for it, and you guys choose a story and get to work (It's like taking on a quest :V).
So, before I go and flip the table on our current progress, I wanna know what do you guys think of this idea?

People like me who can't draw very well will have a hard time plus the fact I don't really draw and colour on the computer.
So maybe if possible have a digital artist with someone else.

Agreed. I'm not exactly a master of digital colouring, and as much as the practice would be nice for me, I would rather have someone else to do the colouring, should they have greater skill. I'm sure most other artists would say the same.

I would gladly take on the task if I had another artist working with me. It would be nice to split it up in two groups: two lineart artists, and two shaders. I'm not good at coloring art at all, but I'll draw lineart if you want. We can just pair up two and find someone that draws similar to the other artist! I can take on all of the lineart, but there's no way I can manage to color it.

I'd go with 2-3 illustrators per game as well. Although this doesn't affect me as much (composing), the extra workload given with a 1 artist-game idea may be a big impediment to motivation.
I'm leaning with having two illustrators, one for line art and basic ideas and another for digital colouring and shading. That'll make things easier with this new idea.

I'm more of a paper-pencil-pen type illustrator, really, and am not very good with colouring. However, I'd prefer that in this regard I be considered more of a backup than a primary. I'll stick with composition for the most part.

Artist A (lineart) and Artist B (color) assigned to Reimu.
Artist C (lines and colors) assigned to Marisa.
...And so on. You might consider using these character pools for multiple stories if you don't have enough artists going around. It can be pretty daunting to tackle a cast of characters by yourself if you're still not confident with your skills. (Alternatively, if everyone in the cast has one stance it's not really a problem for one or two artists to take on a game... unless you have a large cast like Scarlet Weather Rhapsody)

So yeah we have quite a few pencil artists and not as many tracers/coloring people so I guess what will have to happen is rather than strict teams, each pencil/line/solo artist is assigned to a game and the tracers/color artists jump around working on whatever needs work on.
I think I'll try finding some shorter stories so reduce workload on single artists especially for those who can't draw very fast.
Speaking of which, it would be helpful to know approximately how fast each of you draw. Namely how long does it take to make a single full body portrait?

Basically I am IN_A_HURRY because I'm going to sell my youtube music at Reitaisai SP, and the application deadline is the 16th of May. I have to make a label by then.. Also, I am making music for a CD by Karkan this summer Comiket. Next year, at C81, I am going to release my own full track album with professional vocals, and all of the songs have to be new.. I'm in a hurry to say the least. It was quite suprising that this happened, though. (I NEED LABEL NAME NOW)

I'm very fond of my programming skills, but you're using Ren'Py, so you don't need a programmer. I could make some SDL or DirectDraw (or 2D DirectGraphics) application for you. Or use Python 2.5 + OpenGL so it can be platform-independent. But it seems Ren'Py is all we need here.
Anyways, if you need some help on programming, let me know. I'm currently busy with two projects, but it's not difficult to make simple applications like a 2D VN.

With all the shading and whatnot, it takes about an hour. Start around the beginning of class, finish near the end. Takes about 15 minutes to get the body figures right, give or take about five to ten minutes depending on proportion errors.
I don't usually colour my works, but when I do, it takes about two hours with the usual 15 minutes to get the body shape right.
If I get insanely involved in a particular work, I will go at it forever.

Heh I'm kinda like that too. I can't work on things on and off cause the breaks inbetween just get longer and longer, but if I just go nonstop I can do quite a bit of work.

Right now I have the musicians and Formless working on Down on the Corner, but I've been split between using other stories or just have everyone else work on Touhou Love Stories since there's a lot of them. I think I'll just stick to TLS, so I'll try to have a list of the short stories, length, and characters of each by uh... screw it I'll have it by tommorow 8)

I was looking at some of the TLS stories and I was wondering, after we are done with some of TLS, if it's possible get writers to make TLS of the characters introduced after MoF. I ask this mainly because my favorite characters are Iku, Tenshi, and the SA and UFO characters.

Hmm, if you guys have preferences to a certain kind of story then how about this: if you find a story you like and want to work on, link it here and you can work on it. It's not like I'm obliged to make TLS or any specific story, I just picked stuff I thought was interesting, but if you have something else you'd like to work on then I'm all ears.

Out of the stories I've seen so far, there really isn't one that I would prefer to work on. I was just going to wait for the groups to be assigned and let you or the other people in my group decide what story to work on. I barely ever go to PSL and I think the only thing I've read that is not listed in the stories you wanted to work on is Day Planners. Maybe I'll just read the rest of TLS and choose one that I really like. I think I want to work with some TLS first because I kinda like the idea of only bad endings.
And one more question, how will groups be assigned? Will you choose the members of each group yourself or will we say which penciler/tracer/colorist we would prefer to work with? I'm fine with anyone, though, I think it might end up being the tracer and colorist choosing what penciler's style they like the most.
EDIT: I think I'll just wait for the groups to be formed and discuss with my group which story we'll do. I don't know which one I'd want to do first.

I'll post more info on each story later but in general the amount of art needed for each is probably proportional to it's length.

Hmm... good question. Pencil artists/Digital line artists/Digital solo artists would choose which story they work on but since there is a bit of an imbalance in the ratio of pencil/line artists to tracers/colourists then there might be some people who have to work on more than one project. I don't think it's as much as a problem for tracers as it is for colourists, since colouring takes quite a while to do.
Let's see right now we got 3 Pencil artists, 1 Tracer (2 if Taku is up for some extra work and 3 if Sock isn't busy), 3 Colourists, and 1 Line artist (which is cYsmix, who is busy with his own stuff right now)
...Okay maybe it's not as imbalanced as I thought :V Well anyways I gotta think about this a bit more but for now it's getting late :V

I'm not sure, but there was some mix-up about illustration roles (digital line/pencil, colouring, tracing, etc.) amongst the illustrators. I did not follow that since I'm with the composers.
Suikama should clear things up as soon as he notices your posts.

Welcome! There's still plenty of room for newcomers. You're the person Gpop was talking about right?
Anyways here's the quick version of what's going on, since it seems that you want to be doing work on the art side of things, please choose one (or more) of the following jobs that you would like to take on:
Pencil artist - draw portraits of characters without any colouring/shading. Just the outline.
Digital tracer - trace the linework from the pencil
Digital line artist - same job as the pencil artist but on computer
Digital colour artist - colour in the outlines done by the tracers/line artists
Digital solo artist - If you're someone who can do full digital cutins by themselves and are feeling really ambitious, then you can be a one-person team and do all the work yourself.
Just post here saying what jobs you'd like and we'll go from there.

Oh man I totally forgot about that stuff :colonveeplusalpha: Well filetype doesn't matter too much as long as it's not MIDI since I can just convert it to whatever myself in audacity. Bitrate uh... the stuff I'm using right now (SWR soundtrack) is 320kbps so I guess something similar? I'm afraid I'm not an expert on this stuff :ohdear:

Chances are I'll export them in 320kbps 48kHz M4A or MP3 (leaning towards former due to higher quality - but both are lossy formats).
Also, if an OST is made out of this I'll export a FLAC version converted from the original lossless 96-192kHz AIFF/WAV as well to sedate the audiophiles.

So I was reading over my selection again, and I was thinking, "You know, I know I shouldn't be picky, but maybe I should hand-pick one of the colouring guys myself." The story, after all, was super amazing to me, which may make me a bit more insane than I should be. Regardless, since I know for a fact that I alone cannot do the work justice, I shall pass the time waiting for the pose list by giving you digital artists a request.

This here is a picture of Koishi. What's wrong with it? It has no colour. I want to see it with colour, if you'd be so kind. So why don't I do it myself? I want to see how each individual colour artist works with a single picture in my style. But wait, wouldn't it work better with Alice, or Reimu, or that nameless, shirtless guy that's supposed to be the protagonist in your chosen Bad End? Well, I had this subconscious urge to draw Koishi, alright? If I come off as a bit of an OCD jerk, it's only because I am.
Long story short, I would like to request our fine digital artists to express their artistic liberty upon this line art. Thanks in advance to those who do!

Anyways here's the quick version of what's going on, since it seems that you want to be doing work on the art side of things, please choose one (or more) of the following jobs that you would like to take on:
Pencil artist - draw portraits of characters without any colouring/shading. Just the outline.
Digital tracer - trace the linework from the pencil
Digital line artist - same job as the pencil artist but on computer
Digital colour artist - colour in the outlines done by the tracers/line artists
Digital solo artist - If you're someone who can do full digital cutins by themselves and are feeling really ambitious, then you can be a one-person team and do all the work yourself.
Just post here saying what jobs you'd like and we'll go from there.

Three things, with the first point only being me being picky.
1 - I always thought Koishi's hair might be lighter, yet this works quite well.
2 - You're probably the only colour artist available, so my standards make little difference. Really doesn't matter, because...
3 - I LOVE IT! This actually works well with what I hoped to get within the project, and you bang on nailed it! :o
I'm not saying to anyone else to stop, if you were trying. What I am saying is this: "I might have found the person I want to colour for me!" It's not even that big of an honour to colour for me. Who the hell do I think I am, Masashi Kishimoto?

Oh just brilliant. And now I feel like if there is a GG-BB-Touhou combination, MANnosuke, Chou Marisa, Flan, and now Chou Remilia have to be final bosses. (PC98 Reimu, Mima / PC98 Marisa, Pajamas Yuuka, and childlike Alice can be Extra Bosses)
