Weird screen after logging on

Sorry if this sounds stupid... but I recently got this window during one of my visits to the forum and it restricted me from using any of the forum's features whatsoever. So, I've been wondering what does explain that.

The title of the browser window - not visible in this screencap - should have read "Maintenance Mode", which means they were working on server-side stuff at that time.
