Title: Crawl Arena ~ Monsters fight to the death while we bet fake money!
Post by: Ramus on June 25, 2009, 05:39:22 PM
Okay, here's the deal, as of 0.5, the makers have included an extra feature called the arena.  Basically you can pit a team of any variety of Crawl monsters against another team (like say, hobogoblin and goblin VS a centaur, or five Sigmunds VS two hydras).  They'll fight to the death and such.

Rules of the arena:

1.  Everyone starts with 100 gold to bet.
2.  Betting on a winning monster doubles the gold you bet.
3.  Betting on a losing monster causes you to lose the gold you bet.
4.  A tie results in you still losing your fake money, ain't I a jerk?
5.  If fifty turns go by without either monster attacking the other, the match is a tie.
6.  You can give money to another player if you want.
7.  Running out of money results in you getting a single pity gold to start off with.  1 gold.

Simple, no?

If this actually goes somewhere, I eventually set up a tournament with people buying monsters for their teams and fighting for more gold.  It'll probably be price is equal to the amount of experience the monster gives.

Good?  Okay, first three rounds:

Round 1:
20 headed Hydra VS Silver Statue
Notes:  The twenty headed Hydra can attack twenty times in a single turn as well as horde loads of HP and grow back heads that are lost.  The Silver statue can summon loads of low and medium level demons and devils.

Round 2:
Killer Klown VS 5 Trapdoor spiders
Notes:  Killer Klowns are only found in ZOT, and because of such, they're stupidly strong as well as having a wide variety of attacks that not even I have fully charted.  Trapdoor spiders are later dungeon enemies that can hide underground when hurt and surprise attack enemies, they're also faster than the average enemy.

Round 3:
Sigmund VS Shapeshifter
Notes:  Sigmund is known to be physically powerful with his scythe as well as having a wide variety of conjuration spells, including fire, ice, and confusing spells.  May also carrying a wand.  The shapeshifter can morph into and mimic any non-unique, so this means it can go from rat to orb guardian at random.

Place your bets on any match you want!

I'll update this in, say, four hours?

Bet 50 gold on the silver statue to win. The other 2 I'm not to sure on, especially round 3.

10 on hydra (I know 27 head beats the statue...)
5 on Klown (Because clowns are the ultimate evil)
5 on Shapeshifter (Chances of it getting something that can defeat sigmund are pretty high, actually)

Round 1 would seem to hinge on whether the Hydra will target the Statue or the summons. (If the Statue goes down, but not the summons, does the Hydra still win?)

In any case, 20 on the Klown and 10 on Sigmund.

30 on the Statue then. Thanks for the clarification (and for hosting this little event).

Bets for 4 hours then? I'll check back later on.

Results are in:

Round 1:  Winner is the 20 headed Hydra who literally tore any demon apparent that appeared.  It took its sweet time too, killing anything the statue summoned before actually walking over to the statue.

Round 2:  Winner is the Killer Klown who slaughtered the spiders.

Round 3:  Winner is Sigmund who confused the death yak shapeshifter and slowly ate away at its HP until it hit him once as a normal yak and nearly killed him.  He killed it with one last blow.

Pesco: 50
Xan:  110
Jan-san:  100

Next rounds:

Round 4:
Executioner VS Hellion
Note:  Both are rank 1 demons capable of fucking over even late game players.  The Executioner is the fastest creature in the game and does loads of damage per each of its up to eight hits to boot.  The Hellion is beefy and hits hard as well as having the ability to rain the power of hell on you.

Round 5:
Xtahua VS Pandemonium Lord
Note:  Xtahua is an unique dragon in Crawl that possess breath use of every element and high all around elemental defense, she is also more than capable at close range and hold high regeneration powers, more than capable of screwing over your game if you're unfortunate enough to meet her in the Vaults.  Meantime, Pandemonium Lords are randomly generated monsters, however, they almost always have high HP, physical attacks, ability to summon demons, wide variety of elemental attacks, etc.  Whether or not it generates to be strong enough to take on Xtahua is another matter.  They're also stupidly tall in 0.5.

Round 6:
Human VS Elf
Note:  Mundane battle guys, it's just a wimpy human that's unarmed VS a wimpy elf that's unarmed.  And no, they don't know magic.

Place your bets.  I'll be here to collect cash in 3 hours.

Wait, what kind of elf?

The Vanilla elf, it only appears via polymorphing, but think of it as a regular citzen in a town like the vanilla human.

Prepare for severe irony guys.

Round 4:  Winner is the executioner by a hair.  The hellion managed to blast it twice with the fury of hell and knocked it down to severely wounded, how it sped up and left a bloody mess in two strikes.

Round 5:  Winner is the Panda Land Lord.  It got summon happy and used demon spam to keep Xtahua from doing anything worthwhile.  It took ~200 turns to kill Xtahua ending in a death of thousand paper cuts.

Round 6:  Winner is the elf.  The human was winning for the majority of the fight as they both had more or less a slap fight, however, the human missed THREE TIMES in a row, resulting the elf having more than enough time to kick in the crotch enough for it to be lethal.

Jan-san:  100
Totaku:  130
Edible?:  110
Stuffman:  67
Sylon:  40 (Ouch, Sylon, just ouch)

Round 7:
Tiamat VS 5 Orb Guardians
Note:  Tiamat is the strongest unique in the game.  She's a draconian with every breath available, artifact gold armor, vorpalised sword/axe/whatever of awesome, stupidly high HP, and magical resistance.  Orb guardians are those fetus looking things that are the final enemy before you get to the Zot Orb, they're stupidly hard to kill.

Round 8:
Curse Toe VS Killer Klown
Note:  Where to begin?  Both belong in Zot, and both are utterly evil.  That curse toe can summon, has horribly crippling spells, and pokes you to death.  The Killer Klown's name says it all, and it has squeaky shoes.

Round 9:
Rat VS Giant Newt
Note:  You should stop playing Crawl immediately and permanently if you're killed by either one of these.

Round 7:  Winner is the Orb Guardians.  Tiamat used electrical breath to take off half the HP of three of the guardians and then poison breath to kill off one.  She then proceeded to rip through two more before finally being put down.

Round 8:  Epic match of the decade.  Winner was the Curse Toe by a mere hair.  The Curse Toe got summon happy managed to pull out a few demons, wandering mushrooms, and a vampire, and the vampire loves spammals.  The Killer Klown ripped through loads of the enemies and kept blinking to avoid massive hurt.  Notable that the Killer Klown was smart enough to pick the shortest route to the Curse Toe and kill open a quick route to it.  Now, the best part?  The Killer Klown killed the Curse Toe, but he was at severely wounded by then and a few medium demons were able to finish him, resulting in the Toe's Team winning the round.  I'm definitely going to be having a rematch in the future, but with a video recording included.

Round 9:  Winner is the Rat.  Slap match again, they both went on to miss each other for 5 turns before the rat started connecting with blows.  Overall, pretty boring.

Pesco: 1 (Crawl has a new level of hate for you in the arena)
Xan:  100
Jan-san:  115
Totaku:  160 (Totaku is awesome at this)
Edible?:  130
Stuffman:  45
Sylon:  40
wrathie:  125
Affinity:  50
I.P.D.: 155 (I.P.D. also takes a quick lead)

Round 10:
Imp VS Phantom
Note:  Both of these monsters are blink happy.  In the middle of an intense battle, they'll just suddenly blink for no other reason than because they can.  The imp has less HP and attack but has absurd regenerative abilities so that every time it blinks, by the time the two meet up again, it has restored a good amount of HP.  The Phantom can't heal, or if it does, it does it very slowly.  Up side is that it has a lot more HP and attack than the Imp and as of such, it's the brute.

Round 11:
Pulsating Lump VS Hog
Note:  What is there not to get?  It's a pig and a lump of flesh.  The pig is a brute and the lump is not but can cause a random status ailment when attacking.

Round 12:
20-headed Hydra VS The Royal Jelly
Note:  You know what the Hydra is capable of.  The (fun fact, this is the only monster in the game with The before its name) Royal Jelly has regenerative abilities, moves fast, and when hit, has a chance to summon other jellies.  So it's the (slimy) hive VS 20 big guns.

I'm come to collect in 12 hours time, because, let's face it, when I get busy this summer, I won't be able to do this too often, so it'll eventually just become three matches every 24 hours.

Also, Xan, it's the last day to take your turn in Crawl.

Results are in:

Round 10:  Winner is the Phantom.  The imp darted around for a while and did some pretty good damage, but part way through, it started to get dumb and went head on against the phantom.  The Phantom slapped it dead.

Round 11:  Winner is the Pulsating Lump.  The pig kept the lead for a good chunk of the round until the lump polymorphed the pig into a human, after that it was a slaughter.

Round 12:  Winner is The Royal Jelly.  This battle was a joke.  You'd think the Hydra would have enough heads to kill the Royal Jelly, right?  Wrong for two reasons.  1.  Everytime the RJ is hit, it has a chance to give off spring, so twenty times in one turn will result in lots of blobs.  2.  Acid damage counts FOR EVERY HEAD, something that most attacks do not do.  In fact, I'm sure this is not meant to happen, so if you want to kill a hydra in the near future, learn to harvest the power of acid.

Pesco: 1 (Irony...)

Round 13:
Tiamat VS The Royal Jelly
Can Tiamat do what the Hydra could not?

Round 14:
Shapeshifter VS Ice Statue
Remember, all it takes is a single blast of fire.  Else, it'll be a load of physical attack to chip away at a statue that only reacts every five or so turns, but when it acts, it hurts.

Round 15:
Cockroach VS Goblin
Simple match again.

23 Hours until I come to collect moolah.

Goblins can be generated with clubs, daggers, slings, slings and clubs, or just bare handed.  And so help you the day where once every twenty blue moons, these suckers are generated with not just a rod, but a rod of smiting.

Round 13:  Winner was the Royal Jelly.  Yet another epic battle though.  Tiamat managed to go straight in and get the Royal Jelly down to severely wounded when the blobs started to swarm.  Loads of acid and draining attacks, and Tiamat managed to kill the Royal Jelly, but was overwhelmed by eight more jellies and oozes types.  Still, the Royal Jelly is undefeated by a single monster.

Round 14:  The Shapeshifter just went slug and SLOWLY moved toward the statue.  Result?  Winner was the ice statue.

Round 15:  Winner was the Goblin.  He got generated with a dagger and took out the roach in single very lucky hit.

Round 17:
Vampire VS Hell Knight
This is more or less what Hellsing is summoned up into a single battle.

Round 18:
Three goblins VS Iguana
Three humanoid monsters of the first floor VS the strongest monster of the first floor.  How many goblins does it take to beat a lizard with a stick?  Answer coming in 24 hours.

40 on Wizard. He needs to get lucky but he has several turns to do something to screw up the bear before it gets to him.

40 on Vampire. I've never seen a Hell Knight but if the Vampire was a pain in the ass for a DungeonMan it probably would be for another kind of knight.

40 on Iguana, they're awfully tough.

Results are in:

Round 16:  Winner was the wizard as the bear is blind and deaf apparently, and the wizard is mute.  To sum it up, this was a nerdy guy with a knife who went on a bet that he could kill a blind bear with just knife.  He runs into the battle just casting see invisible and takes 18 attacks to kill a bear that only managed to land a single attack (which took off half the wizard's HP).  Pitiful.

Round 17:  Winner is the vampire via Spammals.  The Hell Knight has loads of attack power, but that just won't help you when you can only kill a single rat per turn while the vampire is producing three to five a turn.

Round 18:  Winner is a single surviving goblin.  Not much to say about this fight, it was a slap fight.

Fun fact, because Edible put 260 gold in on the Hell Knight, that makes it the one with the most money put on it.  Guess what Pesco?  You lose again.  Stick being hax while playing Crawl.  Meantime Edible, you aren't doing so well yourself.

Pesco: 1
Xan:  120
Jan-san:  145
Totaku:  220
Edible?:  1
Stuffman:  160
Sylon:  40

I.P.D.: 60

Round 19:
Hell Knight VS Dancing Weapon
In Mother Russia, you don't kill with weapons, weapons kill YOU!
Notes:  The hell knight is back and at advantage here since he only has one target, as a swarm of rats will make anyone's day go badly.  However, the dancing weapon can literally be ANY weapon, including a lowly club to an artifact triple blade sword (it's a kickass sword with three blades of awesome).  Regardless, dancing weapons have the attack of the weapons they are, speed is slightly higher than average and defense sucks, so they're all about move in for the kill.

Round 20:
The Royal Jelly VS Asmodeus
Notes:  Okay, so The Royal Jelly can kill the most powerful independently moving unique in the game, but CAN IT KILL THE LORD OF FIERY HELL?  In case you're wondering, yes he does have every kind of uber-destructive fire spell you can think of and more.

Round 21:
Troll VS The Army of Newts
Notes:  Sure, you can kill the average adventurer by the time you show up, but can you handle twenty newts?  The troll has high HP and regenerative powers and enough fire power to kill a single newt per turn.  The newts, well they'll be getting in about eight hits per turn and there'll be a lot of them.

Again, about 24 hours time.

53 on Hell Knight. How can a weapon defeat a weapon and a man?

53 on Royal Jelly. If it beat Tiamat I don't see what chance this bozo has.

53 on the newts! Even small enemies become surprisingly lethal when they have full containment.

Round 19:  Winner is the Hell Knight.  The weapon was a glaive which did take off a good chunk of the knight's HP, but as said before, if you're a sword, you don't have much defensive power.

Round 20:  Winner is yet again, The Royal Jelly.  Apparently jelly takes fire quite well.  In other news, if you have the powers of hell and fire at your command, don't bonk the monster with your staff.  That is all.

Round 21:  Winner is the troll, if only by barely.  The newts widdled him down to nearly dead status, however, that's also when there were only seven newts left, just enough for the troll's regenerative abilities to surpass the amount of damage being done.  If only there were one or two more newts, the victory would belong to the newts.

Round 22:
Vampire VS Even Bigger Newt Army (136)
Notes:  Yeah, you get the idea, you've seen both sides at work before.

Round 23:
Edmund VS Blork the Orc
Notes:  Two early uniques, Edmund is just a fighter usually in either ring mail or leather armor and can be generated bare handed, with an axe, or most likely, a spear, he also wears high heels.  Blork can use spells and is usually generated with a much crappier weapon, namely a club.  He's also fat and often generated with food in hit general vicinity.

Round 24:
Antaeus VS The Royal Jelly
Notes:  Come on, The Royal Jelly has to meet its match somewhere.  Regardless, Antaeus is the lord of the cold branch of hell.  Unlike the previous guy, he only moderately uses the powers of hell and magic.  He instead has two arms, each of which is far larger than you that he puts to good use, usually knocking off half the HP of the poor foolish fighter who only came with 50 AC to the battle.

71 on Vampire. Spammals deny containment to the newt army, which is the key to their victory.

71 on Blork, I'm pretty sure he could knock Edmund's ass into next week, but this one is kind of up in the air depending on if one of them spawns with a wand or something since they're both relatively fragile.

71 on the Jelly, at this point I don't see why anyone would bet against it.

Hmm, haven't played Crawl?  There's a new version out, so I recommend downloading it and giving it a try.  It's recommended that you play as a Mountain Dwarf Fighter before anything else.  After a few goes, feel free to try the magical classes or even the new artificer class.

Regardless, link:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/crawl-ref/files/

If you're windows, you'll want tiles-win32 version.  Don't be discouraged by the amount of game overs you get, the game is meant to be hard.  And hit the "?" during gameplay if you need instructions or help.

Meantime, about ~4 to 4.5 hours remaining.

Round 22:  Winner is the vampire.  Four words, Spammals and Dodge Tank.
Round 23:  Winner is Edmund, who got generated with a spear compared to Blork who had an (inaccurate) club and couldn't shoot with his spells.
Round 24:  Winner is, no, not the Royal Jelly but our NEW CHAMPION Antaeus.  He just simplified it down to run up and punch out the Royal Jelly and ignore the offspring.  After killing the Royal Jelly, THEN he stepped on the offspring.

Good luck.

I've figured out how the system works. I'll be home in 3 hours time to run the arena. In the meantime, you can all request some matchups. Keep it reasonable.

I've also noticed that mob vs solo matches aren't that good since only 8 of the mob can swarm and attack the solo in melee at any given time. The extra units do nothing useful unless they can smite or airstrike, friendly fire is real. I'll accept team battles for the arena too.

Didn't get any suggestions for matches.

Round 25: Margery vs Tentacled monstrosity - Could be tentacle rape or crispy calamari. Margery has some light fighter gear and a few fire spells.
Round 26: Green draconian vs purple mottled draconian - poison vs sticky flame. Fixed a typo, purples spit mystic bolts.
Round 27 - Green death vs 50 rats - Green death is a mid level demon that specialises in posion magic, can blink and summon minor demons. Bet on how many turns it will take to kill all the rats, there is also the small chance that the rats could kill the demon. Turn bets must be in a range of 4 turns (e.g. turn 2-5)

results in many more hours.

60 on Margery. This is a western game so I doubt the tentacle monster would prevail.

60 on Green Draconian, simply because poison stacks and I'm pretty sure flame doesn't.

22 on Green Death taking uh...16-20 turns.

I'll put 30 on Margery -- long range is always a good thing -- and 20 on the rats killing the Green Death, if that's an appropriate circumstance to wager on.

Round 25: You might have a +5,+5 scimitar of draining, splint mail of poison resistance and powerful spells. But if it all misses, you lose. Tentacle rape commenced, the monster took no damage for the entire fight. Tentacled monstrosity wins.

Round 26: The mottled draconian got in the first shot, but stackable poison deals damage faster than sticky flames. Green draconian wins.

Round 27: Some minor summons of a manes, imp and white imp. It only fired off poison cloud twice. The Green Death took 35 turns (5 round average of 36 turns) to kill all 50 rats.

Round 28: Electric golem vs The Royal Jelly - The electric golem is a creature made up purely of electricity. It's very fast, blinks and shoots all sorts of electric spells. Possibly the most dangerous of the monsters on Zot5.

Round 29: Queen bee vs Queen ant - both are fairly tough creatures with poison attacks. Neither are immune to poison though.

Round 30: Orc band vs Deep elf band - Orc band has 1 orc warrior, 1 orc wizard, 1 orc priest and 2 orcs. Elf band has 4 deep elf fighters.

I'll put a nice, safe 10 on the Electric golem . . . unless Royal Jelly has resistance or, heaven forbid, immunity, to electricity (I honestly don't know much about the monsters other than what Pesco's been kind enough to tell us).

And to vote on Queen VS Queen I'd need to know one thing -- whose HP stat is higher. And if one or the other has at least a tad of resistance to poison (I may take some risks in my wagers, but I like to take as little of it as possible).

As for band VS band . . . Eh, Elves. Wager 10. They may be Orcs but if the spellcasters be squishy and the elves do nothing [terribly] stupid, it should all pan out.

Oh, who am I kidding, now that I've said all that it'll probably be the Orcs who win. Oh, well, sticking with my original wager just in case.

Just to make things clear, I'm bold underlining my bets. Sorry, old habits die hard.

Round 28: Electric golem vs The Royal Jelly - The electric golem is a creature made up purely of electricity. It's very fast, blinks and shoots all sorts of electric spells. Possibly the most dangerous of the monsters on Zot5.

Electric Golem v Royal Jelly
40.

Fairly confident on this match.

Round 29: Queen bee vs Queen ant - both are fairly tough creatures with poison attacks. Neither are immune to poison though.

Queen Bee v Queen Ant
20.

This one is a little iffy, on the other hand.

Round 30: Orc band vs Deep elf band - Orc band has 1 orc warrior, 1 orc wizard, 1 orc priest and 2 orcs. Elf band has 4 deep elf fighters.

Orc Band v Deep Elf Band
20.

Usually, versatility tends to have the advantage, but... lol orc spell-casters. Deep Elves splat.
Title: Re: Crawl Arena ~ Monsters fight to the death while we bet fake money!

Round 28: The electric golem was doing well spamming lightning bolts and blinking until it decided to melee the blob. Down to heavily wounded, the jelly spawned a jelly, an azure jelly and 2 death oozes. Electric golem got insta-gibed after that. The Royal Jelly wins.

Round 29: Double poisoned on the first contact. What the queen bee has in extra maneuverability, the queen ant has in armour. The thicker skin proves to be better in this matchup. Queen ant wins.

Round 30: The orc wizard and priest draw first blood, but that's as far as the orc team gets. The elves have superior magic skills and pick off the fighters from range. The orc warrior goes down last in his futile attempt at heroics. Deep elf band wins.

Ah, well, didn't anticipate it having a Mook Maker ability.

Royal Jelly being able to spawn nearly all kinds of other jellies kinda is the reason why it is so strong. In theory, the Electric Golem should have won due to the fact electric reams the shit out of everything, but then it went and melee'd the Royal Jelly instead of finishing it off =_=

Hobgoblin VS Kobold
Note:  The Hobgoblin has the highest amount of player kills on Crawl Online, at least compared to other monsters (they got nuthin' on falling into lava deaths).  That being said, he's beefy and strong and is the bane of all level 1 wizards.  Kobolds are weaker but often generated with long range attack means including darts, needles, and even a crossbow, though that's rarely, and even then, the crossbow uses darts.  They typically also wield a club, but aren't nearly as good at it as the hobgoblin.  Kobold are the bane of all level 1 assassins.

Round 32:
Cerebov VS Antaeus
Note:  Antaeus, as we've seen, is capable of killing Royal Jelly with brute force.  Cerebov is the other fiery ruler of hell.  Except, he's more like the king of the king as this guy lives in the capital of hell, Pandemonium.  He has a strong fire spell (FIRE STORM) as well as the ability to summon major demons and a good share of brute force to help him along too.  FIRE VS ICE

Round 33:
3 Orc Warlord Bands VS 3 Vampire Knights
Note:  Orc Warlords are DANGEROUS, they take a beating and dish out loads of damage, and their groups that they come with can number from eight to twenty, and when you have three of them... meantime, the vampire knight is the super version of the vampire with all of the dodging abilities and spammal power plus the ability to wield weapons, more HP, and slightly faster movement.

Actually it's really tight. I just ran the arena myself and there is absolutely no guarantee of how any of these 3 matches are going to end.

I'm most likely going to lose money.

Results are in...

Round 31:  Winner is the kobold, who was generated with poison needles.  Needless to say, the hobgoblin did not get to the kobold in time.  Xom predicted correctly here.

Round 32:  Winner is Cerebov. It was pretty close as Antaeus was far beefier and hit harder, but Cerebov had summoned in some high demons to assist as well as having the absolutely powerful fire spell, Fire Storm.  Cerebov survived severely wounded. Xom was wrong here.

Round 33:  Close match, but the orcs underestimated the power of spammals.  Most of the vanilla orcs died within fifty turns, and the mages went quickly too.  The priests and the warlords did most of the work on the vampires and managed to kill two, however, damage was too great for the orcs, the last samurai vampire knight finished the remaining bunch.  Xom was right here.

...And I'll probably get this arena back up and running properly tomorrow, because tomorrow I get 24 hour access to good computers.  These ones in the library have a second lag time for EACH move made in Crawl 0.5, and geez I don't want to find out what it's like with 50 monsters on screen or something.  A whole minute to take a turn in Crawl, ew... >_O

Regardless, hold tight, I should be able to get back to a 24 hour schedule soon.  No promises though, cause my life is a big irony.

True, but thinking is what random number generators most enjoy undermining. In more ways than one.

Again, the Random Number Generator loves to subvert any and all planning, no matter WHAT game it's in. Crawl, Spelunky, Disgaea, anything.

That isn't planning, this is just the RNG being a fucking bitch like it is in FE and its fucking two-number pseudo-RNG.

Actually, to be honest, in 0.5, Kobolds get normal darts rather commonly, and according to my arena runs, hobgoblins die 75% of  the time when they get them since they are so good at throwing them.  With each side only having around 3-4 HP, I think it's easy to see that kobolds somehow have good matchups, which is quite... unexpected.

Round 34:
Angel VS Norris
Note:  Angel is one of the VERY FEW holy creatures in the dungeon.  It wields a long sword of holy wrath plus one other weapon of holy wrath.  They're a pretty high level creature and can smite.  Norris on the other hand is awesomeness personified in Crawl. He's an evil surfer that can be generated with any kind of weapon, usually of the kickass variety and has a wide variety of "KILL YOU" spells.  He also has a surf board and is far too manly to wear any armor except swim trunks.

Round 35:
Flaming Corpse VS Ice Devil
Note:  Ice devil is just a much weaker version of the ice fiend, he has a few ice spells and htis you with physical ice attacks.  The flaming corpses just runs around the dungeon looking for someone to hug.  AND SET ON FIRE.  Yes, this guy will run up to you, hug you, and set you on fire. Evil hugs.

Round 36:
Norbert VS Louise
Note:  Norbert and Louise are later uniques in the game.  Norbert is typically generated loaded with armor, large shield, and a heavy hitting weapon, usually with a brand.  He's all about power housing.  Louise is an armor wearing spellcaster.  You really can't do that in Crawl, but this is a unique, she's allowed to break rules.  She's a pretty wimpy fighter but if she does pull out the spells, she has her own "Kill You" conjurations as well as blinking.  However, like most fights like this, standing next to Norbert is a bad idea.

I'll update this some time tomorrow.  No set time, just tomorrow.

10 Gold on Ice Devil. I had looked at the matchup and realized that the Ice Devil, provided the RNG gives it some degree of IQ, it will go and whoop the burning glomp of death.

Also, 10 Gold on Norbert. As much as I think the Spellcaster can come up with a spell, at the same time . . . this is Crawl. Mooks, however unique, can always pull a stupid.

EDIT: And yes, I know how contrary I sound with these two wagers. Call me a cynic. Or paranoid. Either one may or may not fit.

35 gold on ice devil. If it's smart, it'll keep its distance and throw ice spells at the flaming corpse.

Hence my statement 'provided the RNG gives it any degree of IQ'. I don't think flaming corpses can get ranged goodies (let alone use them). Correct me if I'm wrong. . . . Meaning it's just up to the Ice Devil to not screw up horribly. Which knowing the RNG . . .

I was referring to the Kobold spawning with POISON needles. The POISON ended up being the Hobgoblin's undoing despite the fact that on all counts the Hobgoblin should have outslugged and easily taken the match. This case is different, it's a script-based case, so actually ANYTHING goes. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Ice Devil won.

Round 34:  Winner was the Angel.  Norris got generated with a long sword of fire and the Angel got a mace of holy wrath.  Norris started off pretty well by blasting the angel from afar until the Angel used haste in which it run straight at Norris and got 4 hits in for every 1 he had cause he got slowed.  Angel survived severely wounded.  Xom guessed right here.

Round 35:  Winner was ice devil.  The flaming corpse is faster and managed to get the ice devil with sticky flames, but it chewed a few ice blasts too many.  Ice devil won moderately wounded.  Xom guessed right here.

Round 36:  Winner was Norbert.  He got generated with a battle axe that was vampiric.  So while Louise blinked all over and constantly shot him with various spells, when Norbert finally caught up with her, he started regaining HP while somehow blocking her vorpalized halberd with his shield.  Xom was right here.

Hmm... perhaps I should get the monster tournament going soon... perhaps start off by giving everyone a hundred gold, let them use 150 to buy a team (cost of monster is decided by experience given?).   They win 50 for every match won, plus double the amount they bet on their own team and can spend a 100 more pimping out the team.  Something like that.  REGARDLESS, onto the next set of rounds:

Round 37:
Orc Warlord Band and Orc Knight Band VS Queen Bee, 10 Bumble Bees, 5 Killer Bees
Note:  Biggest battle to date, the orcs will be out numbered, but their fighters are superior.  The bees have weaker fighters, but are loaded with something deadly called poison.  So yeah, INVASION AGAINST THE HIVE!

Round 38:
Black Bear VS Hog
Note:  GO BACON GO!  It's only a bear that a wizard beat.

Round 39:
Cerebov, The Royal Jelly, and Antaeus V The Test Spawner Six Silver Statues
Note:  Okay, these three monsters are the absolute, most powerful creatures within the game.  They step on everything else and hack and slash with absolute ease.  Now, then there's the test spawner, made just for the arena.  This thing checks the field every turn to see if its team has enough monsters.  If it doesn't, it gets pumping away producing about ten monsters per turn (ANY non-unique in the dungeon is very possible) and stops at about thirty to forty monsters.  Problem is that Cerebov and buds eat these monsters for breakfast, but they're being produced at a stupidly fast rate.  Note that the Test Spawner also has perfect resistance and high AC, so this will be the only target that the Big Three will have trouble taking down, however, it's a statue that doesn't move, so... LET THE EPIC BATTLE BEGIN!
Too lazy to describe this battle.

20 on the Test Spawner.

It's a mook maker that's hard to kill; this is what people call a 'battle of attrition', and those are often than not won by the side that can endure the most of it.

That said, sieges have been broken before . . . (and I am officially running my self-doubt trope into the dirt.)

Ramus, the test spawner match is invalid because it is actually immune to ALL damage. What you saw was Cerebov's fire storm taking a small bite from the spawner. And that's as far as it goes. I tested with 10 Cerebovs vs test spawner and they still did that same little bit of damage for the entire fight of a few hundred turns.
