Reimu Quest (Part 8)
« on: February 28, 2014, 12:59:27 PM »

> Your name is Hakurei Reimu.

> You are one of the most notorious members of Gensokyo thanks to your status as the last Hakurei Shrine maiden and primary incident solver.  You are admired, hated, and loved all at once, and to be honest that can be kind of overwhelming and stressful for you sometimes.  You?re around people frequently but it can be very draining on you.  Sometimes you just want to be alone.  Although moments of silence are rare, you are comforted in the knowledge that when you let down your guard, no one will be able to take advantage of that.  Your status as the last Hakurei shrine maiden has made you untouchable.  This is because your life is intrinsically linked with the Great Barrier that surrounds Gensokyo.  If you die, then the entirety of Gensokyo will go down with you.  This fact is even more important because, as of right now, you don't have a successor.

> Lately, you haven?t been able to be as active in incident-solving as you used to be, but that?s to be expected.  Gensokyo's population has grown within the past few years, and incidents come and go--some even solved by youkai.  Although you still hold some resentment towards youkai, you?ve gotten closer to them and have even found love and friendship in their company.  It?s a bit complicated.  There will always be tension between youkai and humans, and although--or maybe because--you've got friends on both sides, you're in an awkward situation.

> You are a tea enthusiast and are fond of animals, although you?d rather not go through the hassle of keeping any pets.  You?re also quite thrifty and have taken advantage of the hot springs behind your house to earn your keep when you are not solving incidents, because let?s face it; a shrine is a difficult thing to take care of.  You?re one busy girl, but you?re not alone.  You share a room with Ibuki Suika, who you took in many years ago.  Also on the shrine grounds are the Three Faeries of Light, who you?ve recently won over and convinced to help out with shrine work.  Until the likes of them showed up, you've been alone for as long as you can remember.

--

> The year is currently 128, and summer has been upon Gensokyo for a while now.  After spending a relaxing, rainy evening at home with Suika, Akyuu, and Yukari, you awoke the next morning to find that most of Gensokyo has been submerged in water.  They sky also looks rather strange now and has a crack in it, as if it was smashed with a hammer.  In the pond of your shrine, you have found a glowing bronze shard that you have reason to believe has something to do with this incident.  On top of solving all of this, you are also trying to figure out if something has happened to your memory, as you're having trouble remembering past incidents and events.
> You have flown to Kourindou and then to the Human Village to find that its surviving inhabitants have taken refuge on the Palaquin, and are currently looking for a safe place to dock.  You have also found the jiangshi Yoshika a distance away from the now-underwater village, and have left her with the Palaquin while you go look for the hermit who controls her, Seiga.
> You have gone Underground to check on Satori and the others, and found that most of the water from the surface has leaked Underground.  While there, you ran into Koishi and obtained a second bronze shard.  You have employed the help of Suika to plug up the flooded reactor, and Yuugi and Okuu to drain the rest of the water.
> You have then flown to Youkai Mountain to confront Kanako, a suspect of the incident, only to find that she has disappeared due to a sudden drop in faith.  You also learn from Suwako that Sanae has been in a deep sleep for a while now.  When you encounter her at the Kochiya Shrine, you find her enveloped in a bronze glow that you think is related to the shards.  You have flown up to inspect the sky and, in one of the water bubbles, found a dolphin.  Upon trying to bring Kogasa and Sanae to the Underground in your sleeve, the Yin Yang Orb went out of control and attacked both of them.  You have concluded that it reacted mainly to Sanae, and for some reason sees her as a threat to your life.
> You have since been able to bring the dolphin to the Underground, along with Kasen.  You have left both at the Palace.  While you were at the Palace, you discovered Kasen unconscious in the same room as Sanae emitting the bronze glow.  When you woke her up, she reported to have a strange dream.
> You have then returned to the surface to take care of business there.  You have tried inspecting the crack in the sky to no avail, and then stopped by Myouren to inform Mokou of various places to dock.  You have stopped by the Forest of Magic, where you have agreed to investigate Alice?s house for a strange creature lurking in there.  You found it and beat it up, finding another shard in the process.  Afterwards, you took Alice to the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
> You found Kazami Yuuka causing trouble in the greenhouse, and took her outside for a danmaku duel.  She gave you a cryptic message involving a secret world and fringed orchids.  You then returned to the mansion to have Patchouli repair Koishi?s and Alice?s books.  You?ve also reunited with Marisa at last and calmed down Flandre, who had another one of the bronze shards.  Finally, you and Meiling have plugged up the emergency exit of the nuclear reactor on the surface.  You and Marisa then parted ways, vowing to explore the incident some more.
> After giving Satori a status report, you sought information from the other occupants of the palace about lucid dreams.  You then went to sleep and found yourself in a strange version of Gensokyo.  After much exploring, you found Sanae as well as a girl named Kikuri, who was surrounded by a shell that appeared to be the same material as the shells.  You got into a fight, woke up, and then went back to sleep again.  You revisited a shrine you had found in your previous dream, and found younger versions of Kasen and Konngara.  You have exorcised a room in the shrine that made you almost sick with dread, and then found Sanae in the pond and woke her up.
> After waking up, you?ve found that Sanae has gone missing, leaving a bloodied shard in her place.  You ran practically all over Gensokyo looking for her, and have finally brought her home.  While you were searching for her, you found Miko?s group (including Seiga) and sent them to the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
> After you settled that, you returned Underground to seek out Konngara and see if she knew anything.  She recognized the shards as previously belonging to the goddess Kikuri.  You went to her [Konngara?s] shrine in search of her [Kikuri].  When you got there, you went through a vivid hallucination in which you were being strangled by Kikuri.  According to what actually happened, Kikuri ran out of the shrine to bring back Konngara and stop your rampaging around the shrine.  You spent a while there confirming this, and then went through a purification ritual to root out the cause of the hallucination.  You vomited some feathers that you remember sprouting in Sanae?s dream, but according to Kikuri (and now Kasen) there is still something off about you.  You have gone to Satori?s place to get a second opinion.
> Afterwards, you finally brought Koishi to the Scarlet Devil Mansion for a playdate with Flandre.  You have also started seeing various people in search of a cause for the ?off? feeling you have.  You have seen Patchouli, Yuyuko, Tenshi, Iku, and now Suwako about this problem, but you have found nothing.
> While you were at the SDM, you met up with Tojiko, who informed you of a place called Crater Lake in the northern mountains.  You have visited Mayohiga in search of any of the Yakumos.  You have not had any luck, and have employed Marisa?s help to get tofu to lure out Ran.  You have spoken to Suwako and Sanae, and recruit them to talk to Kikuri with you.
> You have then gone home and, after many failed attempts to go to sleep, flown out to the where the Human Village is set up.  After a brief chat with Shou, you have flown to Kourindou and met up with Marisa.  She has acquired a lot of tofu from both Kourin and the Moriyas, and the two of you lugged it back to the shrine.
> You have successfully lured out Ran with this tofu.  She has provided you with a lot of information: firstly, she detected a huge tear in the Boundary right before it started raining.  She has been spending the past few days redirecting youkai away from said Boundary and has had no time to search for Yukari or Chen.  However, she has told you have a powerful artifact that allows her to open a portal into Yukari?s gapspace, and has agreed to use it to help you find her [Yukari].  She is currently at your shrine, either resting or preparing this device.  You have then recruited her to talk to Kikuri.
> Afterwards, you have gone to Crater Lake and discovered that it is filled with strange fish that shock you when touched.  More importantly, however, you have discovered a shard in the lake?s depths.  You also get a lot of gems, which you have stowed away into crates at home.
> You have gone to Eientei and spoken with Eirin about the incident from three years ago and species from the Outside World.  You have then talked to Reisen about Kikuri.  You have recruited Eirin and Reisen to talk to Kikuri with you.
> You have then flown around Youkai Mountain, in a failed search of the Genbu Ravine.  You have then gone to the Moriya Shrine, where you ran into Rika, the girl you saw at the shrine when you were recruiting Suwako and Sanae.  You have accepted Rika?s request to find her friend Meira, and then gone to the Kochiya Shrine to find Sanae.  After talking with Sanae about the dream world and the cursed room, the two of you have gone to the area around the Tengu Village.  A patrol has agreed to search their village for shards, and brought Aya to you to talk about the incident.
> You then have decided to go to the Prismriver Mansion and then the Underground; Sanae goes her own way to find Suwako to get a water charm, and has agreed to meet up with you later.
> You are currently at the Prismriver Mansion, where you have met the ghostly girl Layla Prismriver.  She knows nothing about the incident but is currently providing you with information about a woman who she saw passing through the east woods a few decades ago.  She has believed that you are this woman, but evidence points to her being mistaken.
> You are currently talking to Layla Prismriver.

> The two of you swim along through the ceaseless forest.  After a while, the ground starts to slope upwards.  Somehow, you've reached the eastern mountains again, but you can tell that this is nowhere near Mayohiga.  Layla comes to a stop and places her hands on a submerged tree to catch herself.
> "If we keep going at this rate, we'll hit the Boundary."  Layla's brow furrows.

> She left like the place was on fire.  Oh well.
> You continue on in a straight path, in the direction Layla was leading you.  The trees thin out, the ground continues to steepen, and eventually, the water level lowers too.  You emerge from underwater and continue on into the mountains.
> This place really is abandoned.  You don't even see any wild animals around here; if they are here, then they're doing a good job of hiding.  Moreover, you don't see a single youkai here, either.
> Because you're flying, it doesn't take long to get past the first mountain, but once you get beyond that, you see a lot more, and they're all heavily forested at that.  You think this is the closest to the edge you've ever gotten, and there's still so much space to cover.  However, at this distance, you can clearly see the damage the Boundary has sustained.

> That is not something that crosses your mind often, but when it does, you feel a rush of dread.  As Yukari has told you in the past, only someone born into the Hakurei family can take on Boundary-related duties.  She always put a lot of emphasis on the shrine maiden having to be born into the family, not marrying into it.

>Examine the damage.

> You squint at the Boundary.  Aside from the obvious hole in the sky, you can visibly see colors and lights shifting on the horizon, like you're inside a giant bubble or something.  The Boundary shouldn't even be visible, yet here it is.  There are also more cracks on the horizon, that you wouldn't have seen if you were further away.

> Well, let's try to get closer. If it'll take an absurdly long time, such as six to eight hours, to go to the Boundary then return to the shrine, then we'll not go all the way.

> You believe it would take a very long time just to get to the Boundary.  You decide to get a little closer anyway.
> You fly over the mountains, feeling the summer wind in your hair.  After what feels like a while of flying with little progress, you feel your muscles starting to ache, and your lungs burn.

[9:49:09] <Purvis> Generally not, but your mother may be an exception.
