On the other hand, most Touhou doujin I have encountered are appropriate for all ages, which gives me faith in the goodness of humanity.

There's a lot of H/loli doujins simply because there's so many Touhou doujins in total. The actual ratio of erotica in the Touhou doujinsphere is actually much lower than most other fandoms, I think it's something like 10-20% at most.

Is there an actual statistic about that, or is that a number estimated on your personal experience?  :derp:

C27 most likely is talking about an actual static.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but this got researched for a Touhou Panel a few years back.

Looks like the Touhou H-doujin community really needs to step their game up!

No. It should stay how it is. Not saying I hate H-doujin(I actually have multiple stacks of them), just leave it how it is since people will argue that "WTF?! Why chu have lolicon hentai?!" and such, while they watch porno stuff anyways.

Is it just me or do you guys make it seem like being a Lolicon is an issue? Kind of looks like accusations of being gay between people somewhere in their teens. If people desperately want to draw a connection between owner of Lolicon Doujinshi -> RL pedophile, I won't really feel inclined to give a damn, mainly because I hardly care about the opinions of people with prejudices or dumb opinions of people in general. My friends know into what kind of stuff I am, they didn't draw the connection because of Touhou but because I hardly hide that, never had issues. If people give you a hard time because of that, look for better friends.

Regarding the topic, I've never met people in my surroundings who knew Touhou before they saw me playing somewhere. After that, they didn't start liking it either, but I don't really mind since I'd rather keep it as my very own special hobby.

Well, my partner got me into Touhou in the first place, so he obviously plays the games. We  occasionally play PoFV against each other, and seeing how we're moving together this summer, we will probably play even more PoFV than before.

And I also have a couple of friends who play the games, and have varying skill levels. It's rather funny to discuss about gameplay stuff with them, and occasionally we even discuss about the fandom-side of things. But that's rather rare. Or, well, at least we listen to music and arranges a lot, and sometimes comment on it, so I guess you could say that it's fandom stuff.

There is also a rather large Touhou community in Finland, they arrange meetings a couple of times a year, and even have their own forums. However, the community in Finland mainly consists of teenager otaku girls, who are all into cosplay and fanstuff and never play the games. Also, most of them are lesbians, and they all date each other within this really wicked Beauty and the Bold-circle. There also are a couple of other fans to the Finnish community, and I like to talk with them if I go to the meetings. They're mostly adult men like me, and like hentaimanga and anime, and actually play the games, instead of just talking about how interesting personality Minoriko has. All I know is that Minoriko's final card is annoying.+-

I remember that reading about that. Ah, here's it: http://www.japanator.com/touhou-is-way-too-popular-on-the-doujinshi-scene-14537.phtml
On one hand 17% is very low, but that's just because of the ridiculous size. 787 Adult titles during 2009 makes you raise your eyebrows, but 5030 general works is jaw-dropping. All that drawings by hand... Although the majority of doujins are probably not illustrated in detail.
Regarding touhou being an all female cast and whatever, I'd say remember, touhou is a pretty niche anyways. Let's say the H element didn't exist. Touhou would still be some obscure (from a non-Japan standpoint) japanese bullet hell game, that has a ton of derivative music and what not. You can compare it to watching a great anime series and wanting to recommend it to someone. There are still requirements to be satisfied before you can naturally bring it up. Either the person is a good friend of yours, or if a conversation heads in that direction beforehand. In any case, the person generally has to be familiar with japanese anime/manga. Even after you bring it up, its hit or miss. One reason why I don't associate with the local anime club much, is that anime is very broad. Hard to find any discussion about any series which has finished. So the difficulty in finding people into touhou isn't entirely unmatched. A difference between touhou and anime is that it's not even medium people are familiar with. Feels like introducing someone to visual novels. Even past the close-minding "oh snap its from japan, there's a reason why its obscure", someone really doesn't know what at all to expect when they see or are introduced to touhou. At least that's what I've seen with the people I've shown touhou earnestly to. Usually a positive reaction amounts to a "Cool, alright, I'll check that out." consider friends, if they seem open-minded or receptive enough, I usually give it a try.

I and a friend was introduced to touhou by another friend (which I eagerly jumped on), and eventually found the person who had gotten that friend into it. 3 other people in total, with the majoirty of the talking done with one friend. I'm pretty happy to have that. Usually we share links to touhou videos, pictures, stories, or danbooru comics. This feels like the quintessential touhou connection, it's basically like: yes we know there often is long gaps between talking about touhou, but that's OK, links will always be welcome. Although on occasion we do go deeper into character personalities or fleshing out details of Gensokyo so it's more consistent. As for conventions, I've met and talked with two people at cons who distinctly play touhou, one of them was (the only vendor) selling doujins. There's been people here and there who have been aware of touhou. That's why I keep dropping signs, just in case some one does recognize touhou.

(In Reply To The Main Post.)

Overall, I've only saw one set of two persons who liked touhou before I introduced it to them. I was wearing a Touhou shirt, and they came up to me and hugged me. "Who's your favorite character?" It ended with us telling eachothers favorite playable characters, and that's the last time something like that's ever happened to me before. Well.. there was this one other time in which I went to a brief art class and I had a picture of Remilia that somebody asked if she was from the Touhou Project, but yeah. That was it. It was pretty lucky for me. Otherwise, i've seen no other Touhou fan before irl. So depressing, because I live near Philadelphia and the population for otakus and anime fans is humongous.

I was showing my friends my youtube channel because I can.

Anyway we passed by a Touhou video and on the way out to dinner one of them asked me "Was that Mountain of Faith" and I was like "Yar. You know about them?"

And then yes.

I imagine the experience was much like finding a lost relative after being separated for many years. Or being the last one of your species alive, then meeting someone else who is the same kind as you. Oppressed Touhotakus of the world, unite!

Here, I imagine everyone would give me disappointed glances. I have not seen a single person wearing an anime shirt at my university.

Heh, I'd think they were also thinking of the same thing that "Nobody else appear to like anime, let alone touhou, boohoo".

Here, there are some animaniacs, but that is even an acquired taste. As for fans of Touhou, haven't seen or heard anything.

When I told my friends (The ones that play Touhou) that I beat IN on Lunatic, they stared at me with their jaw hanging low.

Before that, they bragged constantly about beating a game on Easy. There are also a few elitists at my school whom I had shut up by showing them the replay of me beating a game on Lunatic.

It was fun to watch them stare at me.

In Choir, when we didn't have anything on schedule (Free day), I played the opening of Vessel of Stars ~ Casket of Star (Right hand) on the piano and I think five people stared at me approvingly.

I decided to annoy my Algebra I teacher with purposely messing up demonstration problems, using the logic "1 + 2 = 9" as a reference to Cirno I think on Cirno Day and the Touhou fans in the room decided to laugh like crazy while everyone else just gave us weird looks.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

One day in Choir that we had nothing to do (This happens a lot because people behave badly and sectionals had to be removed), so I referred the teacher to Marasy's video of Native Faith on Piano, she played it (Projector, not on an actual piano. I mean a video), and I think nearly everyone that was watching had this look on their face. This... Befuddled look. I think one of the students was naming off Suwako's cards in the time of music that they remember seeing them appear.

Happy days :>
My profile picture is whimsy until I feel like adding something else.

Enjoy.

Naming spell cards while hearing certain parts of the song come up is pretty much when you are addicted to touhou (for another thread)... Sometimes, I do that to, the mickey mousing effect is very high.

Ran into a friend's friend who was a more serious addict of Touhou than I was. Sadly, other than that one instance, I've never seen Touhou fans outside of conventions...

Would be interesting if I ran into one by chance, though. Imagine yourself listening to your Touhou music with your iPod, loud in a subway or some place, and some passerby hears it and goes "omg is that Touhou music? I'M A BIG FAN!!"
"Times will bring that up over and over again. It's like I'm dying from my mental hemophilia... Forgetting the past is easier said than done. You know it dies hard, and when it dies, it dies with you."

I would love for that to happen.  I tend to go out with my video game/anime/j-pop player (yes, I have a separate MP3 player just for fandom stuff and another for songs I could hear on the radio back home) and hope someone gets curious enough and hears me bopping my head to something Touhou related.
