> Step into the outside world.
> Examine the landscape.

>You decide to at least have a look outside. You can always come back in afterwards. You leave the house.
>It is a warm, partly cloudy day outside. You have a modest yard to go with your part of the double; you and Orin mow it for Satori when it needs to be done. A few feet away, you can see the entrance to Satori's half of the house. The house itself is in okay condition, but it really needs some work done on the roof, and some of the siding replaced. This aptly describes most of the neighborhood, the houses here are pretty sorta run down as whole. The sidewalks are uneven and cracked, and the street has a pothole a few houses down. It's quiet, save for a lone dog barking in the distance and the echoes of traffic. You have to suppress a shudder, and you realize that this familiar scene is wrong as well, and you're all alone. Obvious exits are South 1, South 2, East and West.

>Add quest: Stellar Road Trip, in search of a Guide
>wear towel as cape

>Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to get a book, even if it is wrong... You'll probably have to take the bus somewhere.
> You try to tie the towel around your neck, but can't make the knot stay. You'd feel pretty silly with a cape, anyways.

> Head eastwards!

>You head eastwards, up the street. Old houses in various states of being run down line the street, most of them fairly inactive at the moment. Up ahead, you can see your neighbor, Miss Hieda, standing at the mailbox reading something. Looking upwards a block or so, you can see the postman on his scooter, running his route. You also see a murder of four crows sitting on the power lines, you don't think you recognize them. In the distance, you hear traffic from the freeway echoing through the neighborhood.

>You've tried all the means at your immediate disposal.
>Who?
>You greet Miss Hieda. She starts a bit, and looks over at you. "Oh, hello Okuu," she says. She smiles at you, but you can immediately see that her heart is not in it. It seems like she's about to cry. It's kind of weird to see, since Miss Hieda is rather on the short side and looks much younger than she is.  Satori says her whole family is like that.

>Hey fuck you I'm dyslexic.
>You do not have a backpack with you! But there is one in your closet. You excuse yourself from Miss Hieda while she finish reading her condemnation notice. You excuse yourself and return home.
>You are in the living room of your home. An old couch you and Orin scavenged from the side of the road the north wall, resting beside the door leading to the bathroom. To the east is a bookshelf full of books that Orin has collected over the years, and a few of your own that are mostly gifts from Satori.  A door to the east leads into the small kitchen and dining room. To the west are the doors to you and Orin's rooms; the old computer the two of you share sits in the northwest corner. Against the north wall is the television, sitting on top of a scavenged and sparsely filled entertainment center. Near the television is the door outside. Obvious exits are North, South, East, West 1 and West 2

>You head west, into your room.
>Your room is pretty messy, to be honest. Clothes are strewn about on the floor, as well as some old papers you never got around to putting away. An old stereo/CD player occupies your desk, along with your modest CD collection. A few plushies occupy open spaces, competing for space with cheap figurines of various video game characters. A bag of birdseed sits on the edge of your desk, beside your purse. Your closet, built into the wall with sliding doors, is open, and is somewhat bare, with a majority of your clothes on the floor. An old backpack adorned with a biohazard symbol (an honest mistake on Satori's part when she got it years ago) hangs in there.
>You obtain: Bio Hazard Backpack
>You seem to be contradicting yourself on which books you want to take. Regardless, you could slip them all in pretty easily, but it get a tad heavy.
>You start to highlight parts of the table of contents in the textbooks you don't understand too well. Oh dear, that's a lot of fluorescent yellow... Maybe you aren't even as comfortable with this as you thought.
>You do not know anyone at the Research Foundation.

>You decide it really was kinda mean to walk off on Miss Hieda like that on a whim. You fetch an extra notebook, you've learned to keep spares just in case, and return outside. You start to jot down some notes while heading East. As you walk down the sidewalk, you hear a distinctive "Caw!" by your feet.

>You decide that Miss Hieda is a bit more important that Emeralda being a little piggy, and approach her. You ask about the notice. She wordlessly nods, not really bothering to look up at you, and hands you the letter.
>"I've seen some kids from Armistice High running around," she mutters.
>You weren't great at history, but you do remember the basics of what you learned in high school. The island was uninhabited and undiscovered, until it was found by the Japanese during WWII and make into an impromptu base. The USA found it and took it over for themselves shortly afterward. In the end of WWII, there was a dispute over over ownership, but the two nations quickly agreed to share it, knowing it would serve as a good strategic point against their common enemy, the USSR. For a short time, it was a joint protectorate, but the machinations of the Governor managed to do a lot to allow the nation autonomy, and eventually force its recognition as a sovereign state in the mid 60s. Still, the USA maintains a military base here. Rumor has it there are even nuclear launch silos. The Japanese government maintains an embassy, but has no real political influence.
>You do not. Just your old desktop in the front room.

> If we have birdseed on hand, consume birdseed after feeding Emeralda.
> Try to remember the integrity of Gensokyo Isle. How rampant are blighted and run down neighborhoods?
> Speaking of history, any recent wars we should be aware of?

>You've done this before; it's not very good. When you have money, you tend to get sunflower seeds so you can share them.
>This is one of the worst neighborhoods, to be honest. Much of the isle is a lot less run down. You think a lot of shortcuts were used in building this place up.
>None here. The USA has been messing around in the Middle East for years, though. And there's always something going on in Africa, you're pretty sure.

>You start to read the letter. Almost immediately, your eyes start to glaze over as you work your way through the stilted legalistic language of the letter. Gah, you always hated this stuff!
>After staring at it for a minute, you find the part you're looking for. Apparently a recent inspection revealed that her water and sewage systems were below code. That combined with the general dilapidation of the house seems to have influenced the decision.
