Atlus to Remake Persona 2
Innocent Sin hitting Japan this winter.

By Kevin Gifford, 10/27/2010

Atlus announced plans in this week's Famitsu magazine to remake Persona 2: Innocent Sin, a PlayStation RPG originally released in 1999 that still enjoys a cult following among series fans. The PSP-based remake will hit Japanese stores sometime this winter, with a soundtrack CD available for customers who preorder the game.
Innocent Sin, set a few years after the original Persona (the PSP remake of which came out last year in America), once again features teams of high-school students teaming up with mystical demons to fight against evil. This time, the city of Sumaru's been cursed by a strange spell that makes any rumor reality if enough people believe in it -- your job is to tour around the city and keep things safe.

The new Innocent Sin will not be vastly different from the PlayStation original. Most of the updates mentioned in Famitsu are incremental in nature, including remade demon graphics and character portraits, a revised and streamlined battle interface, and a new opening movie produced by anime studio Satellite. "I think a lot of people have an image in their minds that Atlus games are hard, and this game will probably not change that much, admittedly," director Shoji Meguro told the magazine. "Nonetheless, I'm positive that it controls better and is overall easier to follow than before. You can change the game's difficulty at any point you like, and it's really easy to get into the story even if you haven't played the original. There are other new features, too, which I can't talk about yet, so stay tuned for more updates!"

Innocent Sin is actually the first of a two-game set that together tell the whole story of Persona 2. Atlus USA at the time only released the second game, Eternal Punishment, revising the plot extensively to change the setting from Japan to the US -- a fan translation released a couple years back stuck truer to the original. "We had debated remaking Eternal Punishment at the same time as this," Meguro commented, "but it just wasn't possible to get both games onto one UMD. We also thought both games would come out quicker if we released them in order instead of developing them simultaneously. Right now, Eternal Punishment is a total blank slate, but personally, I am absolutely raring to make it."

No word on a US release for this remake yet.
Hopefully this means a P4:PSP is in the cards too :D

I will laugh extremely hard if this doesn't get a release in the US.

This is the only Persona game that didn't get a US release, incidentally!

It would be very interesting to see this come out in the states. I mean, we'd get to fight HITLER! Well, if they don't replace him in the remake with some new villain, of course. :V

Probably going to be a more-or-less straight port of IS, aside from the mentioned graphical updates here and there.

If it gets a US release, I'll get it. I just hope I'm not disappointed like I was with the first Persona that I never even bothered to beat.

Seconded, though I wouldn't be surprised if they did change it.

Is P1P any good? I finished P3P a while ago, and now I'm curious.

I'll look into P1P more, I could use more (good) PSP games.

With all these Persona remakes, any chances we'll see other SMT games get remade, too?

I dunno, Persona 1 (P1P) was pretty painful, and the other SMT games are on the WTF side of the difficulty scale, and not the fun side either but more of the retarded bullshit side.

Persona is the "easy" series.  Games like Devil Survivor and Nocturne are just stupid hard.

Yeah but you have to think from a marketing perspective Persona is a niche game, and the other SMT games even moreso.  Plus returns on PSP sales are dismal at best (rampant piracy and low install base compared to DS).  3DS isn't even out yet, and the hardware doesn't seem to be a significant upgrade from the DS.  So realistically if they will report (which I doubt), it wouldn't happen until the PSP2 at the earliest.

Anyways, why bother porting old stale titles that weren't well received in the first place when you've got a sure moneymaker coming with P5 and P2/P4P?

Hmmm...Nocturne I'll give you, but Devil Survivor was actually pretty simple.  Definitely had a couple classic screw you moments (Wendigo and Beldr come to mind), but I found it simpler than even P3.

Of course, as far as games in general are concerned, even DS was pretty tough and aimed at a specific crowd, so I guess you've got a point.

Yeah Persona really is a more wide-appeal approach to the whole SMT franchise compared to the more traditional SMT games.  And even then P1/P2 got remade mostly because of the fantastic branding to the Persona name Persona 3/4 built.

Have the Opening Video
I like the Power Ranger-ish masks in the video. As for the rest, it's just as trippy as Persona 3 Portable's new opening. I like it.

I find it kind of :/ worthy that considering how much you hate games with EO-esque difficulty, you found Devil Survivor... simple? It had a shitton of insanely stupid missions, the AI required way too much babying, especially the escort fights... But yeah. And I speak as someone who

Devil Survivor is bullshit in difficulty terms. I had to cheat to beat Beldr (honestly, this guy defines "unfair") and everything from 6th day evening is a big "Screw you!" in my eyes. Rest was nice, yeah, but I just couldn't bother to finish this game.

Strange Journey is SO MUCH easier IMO. It's still challenging for sure, but if I need to, I can at least go and gain a few levels and get myself a few more demons for fusions. In Devil Survivor? If you got the wrong demons, have fun grinding the hell out of the optional stages for Macca. And if you got the wrong demons for those? Sucks to be you!
