Title: Nitori Quest! [Complete]
Post by: Dormio Ergo Sum on May 24, 2011, 09:52:52 AM
>You are... who are you again?
>You are currently sprawled on the floor, short of breath. What were you doing?
>Try as you might, you cannot recall anything.
>You are relatively certain you can smell something burning, you can also see some smoke at the edge of your vision.
>All of your senses appear to be dulled.
>The lower half of your body feels uncomfortably warm.
>A large red light appears to be flashing somewhere nearby.
>You think you can hear people yelling and heading towards where you are.

>Don't asphyxiate.
>That smoke won't reach you, nor is there enough to choke someone... You hope.

> Try to stand up and look at your surroundings, failing that, just try to ascertain where you are and what the situation is from your position.
>You attempt to stand up. You fail.
>Instead you observe your surroundings from the floor.
>You appear to be in an extremely sterile looking, white room, with cabinets and odd looking tools lined up against the walls. Unfortunately, you cannot lift your head to get a better view of the room.
>"Professor!" Are they addressing you?
>Two people rush to your side and remove your coat before quickly covering it with some thick blanket. Your lower body doesn't feel so warm anymore.

>Just what the hell is going on, anyway?
>"Professor, are you okay?"
>"I can't see any burns, at least."
>Huh, when did that person start checking you?
>"She seems fine, though we should probably get her to the medical ward as soon as possible."
>"What were you doing Professor? It's not like you to make a mistake like this."

>They both appear to be similar in height and build. You can't really make out their features from the floor.

> Try to remember what we were doing.

We'll have to eventually. It's not doing our health (or sanity) any good staying awake like this, though.

Seconding Sect on this. And we'll have to find some way to make up for what we've done. Jesus.

>Do we recall what that experiment we were doing before the memory loss was? Something related to that immortality project...?

... oh god, if those hearts are from Yukari, Utsuho, Mokou, and Kaguya...

"Fuuko. Once I've got my memories back, if I start ignoring all morality again... kill me."

Speaking of which, until we fully understand why she's still here and how much she really feels obligated to help out/stay for Yuuko's sake, it might be safest to consider her word a little suspect: Yuuko seems genuinely friendly, but her sister's patience might have run out... especially if she found our unencrypted file. If she was responsible for that accident...

Well, you're on point, Purv. I'm not sure I can handle this better than you.

Just gonna suggest offering to let her backstab us to help prove we're gonna be changing things. Doubt she'll have the nerve, especially with Yuuko there, but it's something concrete for her to consider. Hopefully we haven't pulled that before!

I'm torn, honestly: I really want Fuuko to take Yuuko as far away from us as she can, but having the two of them with us as we puzzle everything out would be incredibly useful, and probably keep us from going mad from the revelations.

And not going mad from the revelations means significantly lower chances of Mad Scientist Nitori losing her head and lashing out to try and destroy Gensokyo in frustration/despair/sorrow/hatred. If nothing else it would be a good idea to have someone stable around to keep us in check. Bonus points if they get to keep a gun to our head just in case, metaphorically or otherwise.

Sect, you talk like we're going to let Nitori do those things again, which we won't.

I recommend trying to convince Fuuko that we have no intention of turning back to our previous state before the explosion. I'll let Purvis handle it since Purvis is better with writing these things then I am.

Edit: Eh, while the gun to the head thing is a neat thing, I don't think we need it....

Friend-types provide psychological first aid simply by existing near us. It would be best to keep them around.
Title: Re: Nitori Quest!
Post by: Sect on May 26, 2011, 05:05:25 AM
So, the next step is: how do we convince Fuuko to stay? Yuuko isn't the problem, she' s blindly on our side, no matter how much we or Fuuko try to talk her out of it. So, what can we do to convince her that staying will keep Yuuko safe, and how can we ensure that she and Yuuko benefits?

One thing I would suggest is giving her full access: files, rooms, whatever. Unfortunately, this means putting a lot of trust in someone that we can barely remember, and who blatantly doesn't trust us at all. We could also request that at least Fuuko be with us when we're researching our past, so that she can see what all's going on.

One thing I don't want to do is sleep in that room. It frightens me, and I think that sleeping in the hallway's preferable to staying in that room.

Man, I can't really think while tired like this.
Title: Re: Nitori Quest!
Post by: Hello Purvis on May 26, 2011, 05:10:42 AM
Immediate full access is a bad idea, if only because it may lead to wronger conclusions. Rather, asking for their assistance in going over all the stuff in working with us to understand it would probably be very helpful.
Title: Re: Nitori Quest!
Post by: E-Nazrin on May 26, 2011, 05:13:56 AM
Also of note is that "immediate full access" wouldn't be entirely useful to them, either - those files are probably encrypted so that only we can read them (easily, at least). This means that we'd be needed to read through them and give the full picture... and I'm not sure Fuuko would trust our word about what's written in them, no matter how unflattering.

So, yeah, there's our options. Sawing through the arm would be the idea with the most likely odds of success, but the most damaging and painful, while sawing through the chain would have less likely chances of success, but be less painful overall. We (think we) only have one shot at this.

I'm pretty uncertain about our chances of that, but I don't mind giving it a go. If all else fails, we can try chewing through our arm... as disturbing a thought as that is.

Well, we were told that it looked like we could probably make it through the chains that way, if we moved slowly. And that it seemed easier to cut through than our arm anyway, not even counting the worse consequences of succeeding at that.

Well, since no one seems to really object...

Only idea I have is to fall to full orztic bowing position and apologize. That should confuse her, if nothing else.

Also, "Yuuko, get out of here! If you're going to insist, then THAT'S AN ORDER! GO!"

If she's not going to come to her senses on her own, then maybe she'll listen to her master ordering defiance.

At this point, Nitori's a death seeker: unless she thinks that Fuuko and Yuuko will be in danger, she won't try hard to keep it from harming her.

There's a potential counter to that. She certainly may not think her own life is worth a damn, but she MAY be the only one who can fix some of the things that her old self made wrong. And she might be driven to make sure that happens before she meets her own demise.

Also, in terms of tactical decisions, we don't seem to be particularly armed at the moment. Nitori doesn't know WHAT is coming, but has reason enough to doubt she could take on something that was sealed up this tightly.

Only idea I have is to fall to full orztic bowing position and apologize. That should confuse her, if nothing else.

While narratively appropriate, I have my doubts that this would dissuade her for a moment, given her current state, and what Nitori did to her.

Part of me is inclined to think it's most logical for Nitori to head to the security tower, and get a look at what she's dealing with from a safe location. Tracking it should also be possible from there.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how that gives us better tools to deal with the situation than we have right now. It's not like we can just lock her in a subsection and speak to her from there, or at least as far as we recall our own technology.

Title: Re: Nitori Quest!

I would say Nitori is probably smart enough to know she'd have a fall back in place in case this happened before she came to her senses. The trick would be finding it. And if you're going to have something like that, having it where all the detection stuff is seems a good idea.

If she can melt doors and fill a whole hallway with searing heat, enough to knock out the electronics and cameras in it, getting close enough to inject her seems extremely risky to me.

It's a possibility, though, if we can somehow get behind her or stun her. At least have one prepped for the possibility.

Any ideas for getting behind her or stunning her? I suppose there's always the chance of a large explosion in the corridor, but I have to wonder if even that would make getting so close a viable thing to attempt, especially where she has no pain reaction at the moment.

We don't know (or remember) that she has pretty much no nerve system right now, and I really don't have much of a plan for getting close enough to her. If we had a smoke bomb, and a room with enough barricades that we could sneak up on her, maybe, but really my only plan with it is keeping it on us in case that opportunity presents itself (or if using the airborne anaesthetics makes her drowsy enough that we can close in and ensure that she's knocked out).

EDIT: Or if we get so desperate that we're willing to risk the nuclear fires to stab her with it.

In terms of using the cesium, we could scatter some in the corridor on our way to the washroom or what-not, and then splash water on it LATER, to activate it, if Utsuho was on top of the appropriate spot.

Planning session:

<DracoOmega> So do we go with a cesium explosion, and then try to inject her? I'm not sure what else there is at the moment
<Sect> I would take a canister or two of the gas as well, and try to lead her into the mess hall. Set the canisters of gas near the entry way and start leaking gas, put some cesium near there as well. Hide, with some water, and when she enters, toss the water so that it'll stun her long enough for the anaesthetic to start kicking in. THen, try to go in for the injection.
<DracoOmega> That sounds as solid as we're likely to get with our time constraints and materials. Better than I might have expected, actually. Go for it

That's the idea that me and Draco are going with for now, so...

> Prep a needle with anaesthetic, making sure that it's safe (knocking out air bubbles and all that) and fitted with a cap so we don't stab ourself with it. Place that in our coat pocket.
> Grab about six samples of cesium. Place in another pocket.
> Find a bag.
> Get two canisters of inhaled anaesthetic. Place in bag.
> Get a couple of beakers. Place in bag.
> Crack storage door open, look/listen to see if coast is clear. Make for the mess hall.

Wouldn't recommend this: even the craziest of people would assume it's a trap. Another loud sound, such as a door slamming, might suffice.
Title: Re: Nitori Quest!
Post by: DracoOmega on May 29, 2011, 07:08:50 AM
Frankly, I'm inclined to think that even if she was lucid enough to suspect a trap (which is doubtful) that she genuinely wouldn't care. She intends to find us and kill us and it doesn't matter if we're laying a trap or not - she's utterly single-minded in this regard.

That being said, slamming the door when we're next to it may also work. My one concern with that is that if she's in the hallway and sees it, it will give away the room we're in entirely, rather than just the general part of the corridor, so it might get her here quickly than a shout would. And this could be a problem if we're forced to get her attention before we're fully ready, for the other kappa's sake.

I see. I don't read books much, especially books in english. English is hard and way too much effort.

> Was dealing with Utsuho the intended stopping point?
I had several planned, you managed to avoid all of them. Utsuho was the final stopping point.

> Was SOMEONE going to die, with the likely targets being either Utsuho or Yuuko, or potentially Nitori dying and Yuuko continuing her "legacy"?
Nitori or Utsuho was going to die. I mean, considering how Utsuho is batshit insane and unable to feel pain, she wouldn't stop despite bleeding heavily (she jammed her control rod on over the screw in her arm, as well as all that glass) until either you or she was dead.

> Did we miss any important developments by not inspecting the bedroom with the girls?
The more you looked around your bedroom, the more you would have learnt about your studies. If you read enough of your papers, you would have remembered everything. Of course, after a certain point of remembering you would have begun to hear a voice in your head. That voice would have belonged to the old you. If you remembered everything, it would be harder to ignore.

> What was your inspiration?
I got bored. The entire plot was conceived when I asked Keine if I should try my hand at a text adventure and she told me yes. Everything was original, aside from the Touhou-verse.

> What would have changed if we had cut off Utsuho's arm?

It's your optical camouflage suit, the improved version. Nobody, bar those with exception vision (MOMIJIIIIII), should be able to see you if you had it activated.

> What were the planned stopping points?
Revert to old Nitori for fun options or get alternate methods of getting killed by Okuu. I'm pretty sure I had one in between but I forgot.

> What did Fuuko do to Nitori, or will that be explained in the next part?
She sabotaged one of your projects (portable nuclear generator) so that it would blow up. It gave you brain damage, which Fuuko found out from the full scan.
Fuuko snapped and began planning to escape with Yuuko when old Nitori began to look at Yuuko with the same expression that old Nitori would wear when performing SCIENCE!

That reminds me, we never did ask Fuuko what the results of the scan were. But there was really no opportunity to anyways.

I'm glad there's going to be a sequel to this. I had a lot of fun lurking reading the quest!

(she jammed her control rod on over the screw in her arm, as well as all that glass)
She did what now.

Anyways, does this mean we technically got a better (best?) version of what could've happened? The voice in her head thing makes me both glad and disappointed that we didn't search that room. It sounds like it would've been an interesting experience, at the expense of Nitori going crazy again. Especially since we're trying to revive Utsuho now.

As for Eversion, it's a freeware game that screws with you. Pretty fun, once you get past the creepy.

Optic camo + anaesthetics might have been an option. Of course, you would have had to fight off old Nitori first.

She did what now.
MASSIVE BLOOD LOSS.

Well, Nitori isn't a monster anymore.

I wanted batshit insane Nitori to finish her immortality project. :(

I'll check it out. :)

It's your optical camouflage suit, the improved version. Nobody, bar those with exception vision (MOMIJIIIIII), should be able to see you if you had it activated.
... F-F-FACEPALM!!!

Man, sorry about coming up with these questions little by little.

You do of course, know what you must do. And by that, I mean make one of those text based adventure games, with multiple paths and such.

Durrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

> What can you tell us about the experiments that Nitori ran, or at least what can you tell us that you don't want to be kept secret for the sequel?
>> Specifically, the four (five?) hearts in the display case
> What was in the vial that Nitori had?
The hearts belong to Kaguya, Mokou, and some rabbits. It's used to produce the essence of eternity, which is also what your vial contained. It would basically lock someone's mind into their own personal eternity.

>> the results of the experiments on Okuu
You replaced the old steam generators in the lab with nuclear generators. You were also working on nuclear batteries.

>> and the immortality experiments.
The first couple are just failed attempts that killed random people. (My planning is awesome)
Basically, you gave Yuuko immortality. It restored her missing limb and saved her from death. It also improved her intelligence, though she's still very childish.
The completion of the project would mean extracting it from Yuuko and implanting it in yourself. It wouldn't kill Yuuko, but she'd be driven insane by pain and betrayal. I really wanted to see this happen. :(

> What would the "Utsuho Kills Nitori" entail?
Okuu kills you, goes into overdrive and takes down the the rest of the lab, and the mountain it was built on. She dies too.

> Nitori/Yuuko ship? :3
Nyoro~n

I wrote a 71 page CYOA for Helepolis in 3 days. NEVER AGAIN.

And here I thought the Utsuho segment was going to be a flashback to how she got killed by monster-Nitori a while ago, rather than a parallel-time event.

Like I'm smart enough to think of playable flashback segments. :V

I'm sorry; but an awesome quest needs some awesome music.

I guess you should be thankful I beat Hakasu to it then...

Unless of course you add to it.  :derp:

They were really good. The Hell Raven one was brilliant and set up the next two tracks so well. You don't have bad taste in music at all. XD

If anything now, all I can think of is one last request...

>Nitori: Lock up and get to work. You've got a raven to 'save' and a world to fix.

Hatate Quest IS the sequel. :V

Oh yeah.

>Utsuho's Death (Non-Meltdown Ver.) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9yjs6qMmwk)

That should conclude the music, I think.
