Title: Are you a DARK FLAME MASTER enough dude to CHUUNIBYOU this thread?
Post by: ♛ Apher-Forte on October 07, 2012, 01:28:44 AM
Quote
Yuuta Togashi suffered from chuunibyou (fantasy/delusional disease where one tends to think oneself as some kind of superhero/vampire etc. with real life LARPing examples, things may or may not include cosplaying and taking the whole 9 mile road of talking in third person), while he was in middle school.
When he graduated, he put that dark history behind him and forgot about it... or he was supposed to. As he tries to leave the sad past behind, he encounters a girl coming down from his apartment one floor above his... their eyes met, and strange fate would have it that High school was smooth sailing and full of enjoyment - until the unavoidable, sad event occurs. The event that locks Yuuta into a contract with Rikka Takanashi and disrupts his desperately ordinary life.

This entire episode best gif. and yes, this show sums up my life when I discovered anime, and how I feel after going through the 'fantasy' stage.

While we are discussing this anime, is anyone a Chuunibyou sufferer or a victim who finally graduated from its horrors?
I look back today and I see all those Kamen Rider LARPing... and I can't help but do the same thing as this gif.

His classroom introduction was really cringe-inducing because I can relate. I had a very active fantasy life as a tween, mostly within the world of D&D (1ed 4 lyfe yo). I would bring my D&D books to school with me, draw my favorite OCs in class, and often evoked phrases or expressions only found in that world. Watching him stand up and proudly proclaim his role made me at once proud of him and embarrassed for him.

The comedy is sharp, the pacing is good, and I do like that the message, thus far, is not "play time is fine but you have to do grown-up things too" but just "never let your fantasy world die". Love that. AOTS.

I did that with traffic lights.

With young kids in the car I still do it, only now I can cheat and use walking signals and opposing yellow lights to trick them into thinking I have MAGICAL TRAFFIC LIGHT POWERS.

Being an adult is awesome.

I actually had something like chuunibyou, but it happened over the course of 2 years, starting in 7th grade. It didn't involve whole fantasy-world shenanigans, but it did involve me doing clich?d things (
like leaving "mysterious" love notes and gifts
) and expecting good things to come out of them. Watching this show brings back that horrible, horrible feeling that sometimes accompanies nostalgia.

Woo, i still remember my early teen life when i and (luckily) some friends use to role play as characters from naruto and actually made up the whole story and we did it for about 3 months straight until all of my other friends got bored, and i'm the only one left. That embarrasing part when I'm trying to get my friends to do naruto LARPing again, just to get funny looks from everyone in class...  :qq: :colonveeplusalpha:
And I still pretend I'm a samurai and swinging umbrella everywhere at my house (but i made sure I'm not found out by anyone) till I go to high school.
Even until now, my imagination still runs wild whenever I get bored..  :V
Guess my mind is still one of a child after all..
I'm just not showing it to anyone else, and act like normal people.

On the show wise, I think the best part of this episode is also how we are introduced to the characters, I cannot help but think everything here is paced just perfect.

Not on the show wise:
You are not alone on the samurai part, I sheath (note: close) my umbrella like a Iaijutsu master (quick drawing sword technique) to show my prowess... orz. This is seriously embarassing...
> still play with my phone as though I am a member of the FAIZ (555) Kamen Rider... pretend to dial and then put it near my belt... making 'click' and 'lock' noises... oh god please bury me in a hole I wanna dieeeeeee adfasdhgajhsjfa

I was chuuni as fuck most of 9th and 10th grade.  I wrote terrible Daria fan fiction with a self-insert, a Gary Stu of the worst kind - only he (who somehow hailed from the same hometown as me) was not only laid-back and chill with Daria and Jane, he had a girlfriend (who was TOTALLY NOT A REFLECTION of Mara Jade), a whole shabang of spy gadgets, and a spaceplane (whose physical description was TOTALLY NOT A REFLECTION of the Missile Boat from the TIE Fighter PC game) with a hyperintelligent and overly helpful supercomputer (whose behavior was TOTALLY NOT A REFLECTION of the computer from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and had replicators (which were TOTALLY NOT A RIPOFF of Star Trek).

I was chuuni as fuck.  No, really, I was chuuni as fuck.

It was worse.  At one point my self-insert and the Daria cast went on a goddamn field trip to New York City where they MET AND INTERACTED WITH A SELF-INSERT OF ME AND MY FRIEND.  As in directly.  Who were in NYC coincidentally the same day.  In the Brooklyn neighborhood where the one guy sells old Soviet military medals.  To buy the same medal.

My self-insert of myself began to then make meta-jokes about my gun-toting self-insert.
CHUUNI.
AS.
FUCK.

This anime is amazing

Edit: Jesus Christ they're still out there  :o
Edit 2: I'm going to make them a $9,001 raised goal for this year's charity drive!
Edit 3: removed some obvious clues, gotta keep it worth being charity raising

In high school I was an immortal time mage that could summon meteors and shit. Now I'm a YuugenMagan eye that draws low-quality comics. You never know where life will take you!

Seriously though, this is a good anime. It examines a unique phase of your life in such a way that you can look back on it and laugh rather than trying to shun its memory.

I forget what stupid shit I did in middle school but back in very early high school I was worried that The Matrix was real and that anyone around me could turn into an Agent at any moment. :ohdear:

Fortunately I'm far wiser now and at any rate if this reality is a computer program the admin doesn't need suit-and-tie ninja bots to make my life miserable. There's plenty of more mundane ways. :V

Wow. I'm impressed to see so many people who can genuinely relate to Chuunibyou; I'm glad I'm not the only one~ :)

As for the show itself, let me just summarize my opinion as concisely as possible: It's FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC--and it just becomes more so with each episode; I believe it very well has the potential to be the best show of the Fall season next to Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun~

Agreed. And I am ever so glad that at my chuunibyou times, I have friends that wants to do it with me, so at least I have some close friends, and were not isolated.
And the show got more and more interesting, I can't help but watch it for a prolonged (20) times and still laugh every time  :3

You have a really nice costume and swords and things. In my chuunibyou ages, I have my imagination, plastic bags, sticks, water baloon and any other shit I can raze from the school's garden :V, not like it bothers me though, those are good times, although I can't handle those embarrassing times when people look at me funny *slams head to wall repeatedly*

AAAAA
I brought my 1E Monster Manual to school one week and accidentally left it in class

Which is embarrassing because it's full of nudity.

When I realized it the teacher had found it and he and some others actually looked through it.

Thankfully it was all cool (they found the book entertaining, oddly). But MAN what could have been a disaster.

I used to play around of a sword that was actually just a thin metal pipe. I have a big backyard so I used it to slay plant monsters.

I LARPed Vampire: the Masquerade in college.  We were running around our residence hall which was a converted old mansion at night doing rock-paper-scissors throws as part of the LARP rules while acting all vampirey.

It got worse... when I went to Australia for a semester, I joined up with a VtM LARP group that was part of the worldwide official White Wolf group, The Camarilla.  I was huge, huge into electronic music at the time and rolled  up a character who was a DJ.  I ended up legitimately purchasing zipoff rave/track/skate hybrid pants.  They were actually really comfortable and had lots of pockets, and they had two different zip-off lengths.  Longish, just hitting at the midcalf, and shortsish just at the knee, as well as regular old long pants.

I never wore all the Kingdom Heartsish buckles and zippers errywhere pants but these were some mighty goddamn chuuni pants.

I can't really remember but when I was really hooked on Kamen Rider Black I used to call myself 'the chosen one' and refer to myself in third person. on any good day you will find me touching my stomach in a certain manner, teachers thought it was stomach pain or some shit, but it was actually part of the show's protag's curse, he has two stones from the sun or something inside him (sun stones lol does science work?). I would make a gripping motion even in class to signal my 'transformation' and sometimes my face tightens to a scary scowl. At this point the teacher thinks I am having the worse pain ever and everyone had at least once sent me to the nurse office worried I have to take a sick leave.... I was pretty much so chuuni that I and two geek friends who are also into this played around, switched roles as monsters and whenever I become the monster I tend to have all kinds of crazy abilities. (like transforming breath into spikes coated in fire or some shit)

the best was those day we would use the old discarded school desks and build them up, into 2 platforms, then get up and announce our killing move. 'RIDERRRRR KICCCCCCK' and jump down. (since real people don't fly a distance after jumping off high places, needless to say the monster had to be parked below me. this essentially is a true set up locker of hurt.)
also, episode 2 is outttttt why is onee-san so moe.

Sort of late to the party, but yeah this is great. Let me tell you the tales of my life since if you watch anime it's pretty likely you know the chuuni feel.

When we were really little, Jan and I used to like pretend to be fictional characters and create crazy crossover stories and stuff. I dunno how to really explain it. I guess that's kind of fine when you're that young though... middle school was really when I actually started to be interested in something, which of course happened to be the Japanese animes. When I finally made good friends in 7th grade, all the girls were a Sailor Scout so we all called each other by the names of the different Scouts. That's still not THAT lame I guess.

We moved when I was in 8th grade, and I met my current best friend on the first day at my new school because I decided to go full anime. I wrote something about Rurouni Kenshin in math class in some thing where we were supposed to write our own math problems in math class and we happened to trade papers so she was like: oh you like Rurouni Kenshin? THUS FRIENDSHIP. We went on to do glorious things like write self-insert fanfiction together that I still have, but can't share cuz she'll threaten to kill me. Alas, I was never awesome enough to do stuff like LARP though I did have a piece of metal a friend of mine made into a sword for me once as well as this shiny metal broomstick I named the "battosai stick" for some reason that I still had semi-recently.

I'm too sentimental to really ever get rid of things. Plus, I enjoy laughing at my old shitty fanfiction.

This (https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/140_12387490206_1512_n.jpg) is probably my favorite shitty lame me picture even though I'm not cool enough to have pictures of me with like fake weapons and shit.

I wish I could tell stories about Jan without worrying he might get mad at me, ah well there's nothing too ridiculous to tell at least.

OK this is clearly an extended and serious chuuni.

For the record, the LARP was all we did at the start.  Afterwards - maybe like after most of my first year - we ended up doing the regular tabletop versions of VtM as well as Werewolf, D&D, and other sundry systems.

Requesting picture of said mighty goddamn chuuni pants.

I don't even remember the brand or what they were officially called, but they didn't look too remarkable other than having hems for each layer of zipoff and being made of lighter crinklier nylon than track pants were made out of.   They were hard as hell to find in 2003... I have low hopes but will look around.

I wish I could tell stories about Jan without worrying he might get mad at me, ah well there's nothing too ridiculous to tell at least.

Nope.

Jana, this is a chuuni thread.  Give her leave to hold forth.  There is no shame or harm here.  We are all chuuni in our own way, brother.

Why is this show both so hard to watch yet also so great

See if you can find all of the references to KyoAni's other anime. There's tons of it everywhere. I mean they already had gigantic boners for plastering Haruhi all over Lucky Star; it only makes sense that they eventually animate a show essentially made up of anime references so they can throw in every other show they did.

I'm not surprised at all, but I am a bit disappointed. I was hoping she wasn't just going to be another 'oh god I hate my old self'; a 'oh hey it wasn't that bad bright up' type would've been cool.

So I finally got around to actually watching this and oh god why can't I hold all these feels. So much nostalgia. And the action scenes are amazing. So far, I think Shinka is my favorite character.

I was also reminded of this epic saga (http://www.demon-sushi.com/warning/index2.html) from years gone by. Be warned, unlike the show, it's kind of a bummer.

Edit: Oh, and my results from the shindan thing: I'm "The Dead Emperor," and I have to conquer the earth. I'm okay with this.

I wasn't going to watch this show because I've been really busy and I'm not into eyepatches or DFC, but the description in the OP really grabbed me.

Back in my school days, I wanted to be a ninja, a pilot, a wizard. Now I just want to be making enough to cover my student loan repayments.

Because Fukujun using his Zero voice is limited to extremely hammy roles, like Leopard from Sorakake.

I guess it is part of good bits. I really want to see him use this voice more... like maybe Kyoukai Senjou he should go all lol serious instead of running around naked. But all things considered, people should really notice DFM is basically in entirely Zero in disguise.

Ok, I started watching this as well. Didn't know this was actually "Me: The Anime".
Seriously, I started doing these when I was 10 and I'm now 22, and I still do some of these weird things when nobody is (supposedly) looking. And when I was in early secondary school I remember I wanted to wear colored lenses as well (a blue and a red one) and dye my hair white because that would be SO AWESOME. I just never had the balls to do it. :V

Work hard, party harder as an anime character. (I also do yellow, red and bright green every now and then for the lulz)

Man, this anime really gets me in the nostalgia gland. Not only the obvious ones like how chuuni I was and I'm still is, but how I loved these silly simple romantic comedies back then. Not to mention how similar this is to my dreams of romance back in the day before I too have accepted the harsh reality. Man, dunno if it makes me depressed or makes me feel old when I'm still young. Or if it makes me feel jaded.

Btw, that gun spring thing reminded me how cool it would be if I had a Hidden Assassin Blade. :P

So I finally got caught up on episodes 4 through 8, and it just keeps getting better.

The creators could have coasted on the comedy effect for the entire series if they wanted to and produced a solid work. Instead, they've pleasantly surprised me in now bringing their focus upon the dynamic of a character locked in fantasy as a means of protecting her from pain (Rikka), a cold realist who won't allow anyone else to entertain fantasy (Touka), and the protagonist who can sympathize with them both, Yuuta.

The show clearly sympathizes with the idea that fantasy is often a preferable alternative to the way reality works, unapologetically. Touka may as well represent the spectre of adulthood more than adulthood itself - even Rikka's friends know how to relax and enjoy themselves, even if some of them aren't totally chuuni.

The scene on the train onwards had me literally fighting back tears. Reality can often be a cruel, heartless monster. Retreating into fantasy might not be the most mature way of dealing with it, but it's definitely understandable. What brings us out of it isn't someone slapping us around with a soup ladle yelling at us to suck it up and deal with it - we come to accept reality when we find people who really understand us and accept us for who we are. It's how we deal with the world. It makes living in it bearable.

I'm really hoping these two do end up together. It's a relationship that would be good for both of them, especially Rikka.

Post by: Solais on November 25, 2012, 11:21:36 PM
What also hit me in the heart was the reason why Yuuta became a chuuni.
It's because it's the same thing I've been feeling since I was 10, and ever since, even now. How I felt that I'm different from others because I found their normal life to be boring, because I found that I do not like doing what everyone else does, I could not understand why people find all those weird things like partying and going out to just hang out and stuff to be not boring. When I realised this when I was 10, I said to myself, whispering to the wall "I do not belong to this world." And that's how everything started, how I started to distance myself from others and trying to find my place - and yet, I only found people who always did the same things as others, who always liked things the way I do not like, and people who hated that I was not like them. And it's there even now, even when I now know that others like me may exist, but not here where I am. And I still fear that even those who are like I am dislike me as well, since that is starting to get obvious. Indeed, when an episode of this anime ends, I realize that I can feel alone again, even though I long forgone that emotion.

It's weird like that. But at least this anime is also a good beacon in my newest self-reflection process, that focuses on knowing my old selves better and trying to find the invisible subtleties in my life that led to the "defects" in my personality. It makes me resonate with the person I was back then.

(http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mde81ikwH11qd32tdo1_500.jpg) you mean one of these? Yeah well, I totally want one myself.

and yeah I know right, the train scene brought onto me like (pardon ahem...) a train of feelings. These vivid images of me distancing myself because I know I won't fit in, and bashfully tried my best to do so later on in a wrong way... and then only to realize: well, reality sucks. I guess I will just have to bear with it until I die.
The thing is that, I cannot help but envy Rikka having Yuuta who can understand and somehow accept her, why oh why we never gonna get a Yuuta of our own...

Yep, that is the one, but that's the kinda lame-ish official Ubisoft one. Its design is top notch, but its functionality is not the best. I've seen some version on youtube that uses a ring to trigger the blade movement, so it works just the same as in the games, instead of using an awkwardly placed button.

As for cons, yeah, there was a time I went to cons, well two actually. Being a small country where there are only like 2 cons at all, and mostly in the western region where there are actually people who are into such things, for me it was too costly to travel to the capital city all the time, and to be honest, the first time I went I felt very good, like if I finally found my place to belong, but the second time, I felt the same thing as you. I felt that I still don't belong there, and in ways it was obvious, because there was only one person I knew from the group, the one who invited me, and it was a quite large group of friends, and I felt that I'm just intruder in their group. (That's also when I started seeing cosplay as something "not right". Like... dunno, how the clothes in animes look believable, but in real life, it looks all fakey. Or at least when it comes to anime cosplays, not western games.) I think a few months later I stopped talking to that friend as well, because both of us felt that we are too different to talk about anything. This happened with all of my friends in my life.

You definitely weren't. When I heard that "flexible" line I grinned like Hermann Cain.

As far as this episode goes, yeah, things are moving in the direction I was hoping they would. Although with three episodes still left to go, I share kinoko's worries about a "misunderstanding" arising just to add a little more tension.

I think it's neat how the chuunibyo phenom is being shown as a shield from all kinds of pain, including the pain that inevitably follows being in love.

To be really honest, the whole series is pretty much clich?d in every way but the interesting premise and the phenom it is mostly about (not to mention the "delivery"), so I think it is obvious that the series is going in the direction you hoped to go. :V

I think it's neat how the chuunibyo phenom is being shown as a shield from all kinds of pain, including the pain that inevitably follows being in love.

The show heavily uses the third stereotype of chuuni (the Evil Eye Wielder). This type of chuuni can only substitute something that he or she accepts on something that he or she rejects, like love (as you said) or the lack of a valid retaliation against a lose-lose situation.

Still, disregarding all that, it's fun. Call me bad for this but I really think Chuuni is Haruhi's seriousness and Nichijou's simplicity and powerful implications combined. Very nice show.

I'm so glad this is not taking the "oblivious to the romantic subtext" route. It was one of the few things that annoyed me about Kyon.

Also, going back a little:
Btw, that gun spring thing reminded me how cool it would be if I had a Hidden Assassin Blade. :P
I can't believe I'm the only one who thought of Robert DeNiro in that scene?

There's nothing random about it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzPBUGUM7KQ). DeNiro used the same quickdraw rig in the movie Taxi Driver.

I am impressed at how this show manages to avoid all usual annoying things of romance animes. The fact that they skipped the scene after Yuuta asked Rikka to remove her eyepatch, probably because such scene would have been really frustrating to watch, all the times they could have delayed the declaration... Even, this magnificent troll :
Quote from: Stuffman

Oh, that's...that's substantially different.

... Or probably I just don't watch enough romance anime to know what I'm talking about...

But I wonder why Yuuta did not wait a little before trying to force Rikka out of chuunibyou (at least after the festival), and why did he not go softer... Perhaps doing so would not have helped, as it would have been easier for her to ignore such request...

When someone makes such face, you're clearly doing something wrong, and the least you can do is to try to talk about it.

And if stopping chuunibyou means losing your entire personality, it doesn't seem worth it. Perhaps just faking being normal while still believing in the Unseen Horizon in her mind would have been less destructive...

Interesting how they handle it.
The bleak opening fit well. It shows how all fun and colour is gone from Rikka's life after her fantasies were aborted. Her extreme dependency on Yuuta is saddening, as her entire confidence was just smashed by Yuuta. Feels bad man. Luckily Yuuta'll DARK FLAME MASTER her before the end of the series.

I marathoned this show over two days and ahh I'm kicking myself for not picking it up sooner. haven't laughed this much in a while.

it reminds me of my youth too and has got me remembering things but I'd been thinking about these kinds of memories before I'd even heard of this show. my nephew (he's 6) likes playing these evil eye kind of games lately and he always asks me to join in when I'm over to visit. we've built up a small collection of swords and daggers (ranging from the kind you get in a lego set (it's like two inches long) to a plastic katana) to fight with. we've got a secret base too.

I had some evil eye type friends in primary school, my little group had some fantasy that nobody actually really explained to me but I played a gatekeeper and all I did was sit on a bench and the password to get back into our base was just the lord's prayer and it was quite tedious to listen to every day especially because I was an atheist. I preferred to play house, chill out or read.

there were three playgrounds in my primary school. one for the nursery, one for everybody up to year 3 and then one for years 4-6. everybody really grew out of playing games once we got into year four though, but the girls all still played house during the summers. then we all formed secret societies in our last year. by high school all traces of this kind of behaviour had gone so I don't know how chuuni my life has been because it all happened several years earlier than it apparently should do but maybe us going to high school at aged 11 is why we snap out of it at a younger age.

the relationship between touka (♥), rikka and sanae hits way too close to home though for reasons totally unrelated to childhood delusions sighhhhhh. I have been torn between smiling like an idiot at things like their mutual confession and wishing everybody Rikka knew had stopped enabling her sooner. this is getting a bit too lettyjournal so enough about my life.

stupid stupid yuuta

I'm pretty pleased with the ending! I figured there'd be a fair amount of things left to think about given that it was an adaptation of 2 novels into only 12 episodes, but I think given that the anime as a whole was really great! If anything it was a bit vague, and I don't feel sure as to whether Yuuta is encouraging her to pretend all the time or if they've actually achieved a balance of still enjoying being ridiculous but dealing with life at the same time. I would have liked to see some sort of time skip scene, even something really short, to make that clearer. Then again, vague as hell endings are all the rage nowadays.

Honestly, Nibutani seems like the character that best shows a balance of chuuni elements and elements on normalcy in her life, without completely giving up one for the other. But yes the ending was adorable and oh my gosh Rikka is so cute! :3 (all the girls are so cute)

Also I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but I think the light novels are very different from the anime. I know at least that Kumin, Dekomori, and Tooka are anime-only characters.

Hmm, not sure how I feel about the ending. It wasn't great but at the same time I'm not sure what I would've done differently. Ending a story is hard D:

I did really like the way
Rikka got some closure with her father, since that's really what's important in an ending I think, closure. But I think I would've preferred Yuuta showing up at Rikka's place in full badass Dark Flame Master mode instead of crumpled in an exhausted pile and running from cops and shit (everyone else showing up at the last minute there was pretty forced).

I guess it was alright, overall.

I think this right here is the central theme of the entire series. It's why "BANISHMENT THIS WORLD" keeps being shouted all the time - being chuuni is a declaration to the world that you reject the reality presented to you. What I like about the real message, though, is that accepting reality is not as important as being true to yourself. Or more accurately, being true to yourself is the best way to accept reality on your own terms.

This was pointed out when Yuuta started grilling Dekomori about her "powers", basically telling her they're all fake. Her tearful cry of "I know that!" is a less eloquent way of saying "I'm aware I cannot actually summon a giant hammer out of thin air, you idiot; this is me having fun with this boring reality!"

"Growing up" does not mean completely casting aside your ability to fantasize, play and invent; it means accepting that you will always do these things, and for all its faults, it's in fact healthy to do this - it helps us soften the blow of reality and deal with how things really are in our own way.

As for the ending,
yes, the entire cast showing up to chip in with the Great Escape was a bit shoehorned, and I really wish we hadn't had some old dude narrator explaining to us the message of the series in its final moments. But like Stuffman, I think this was the best possible outcome otherwise. We know from Episode 1 that Yuuta and Rikka are going to end up together - that's not the tension - the tension, which is between fantasy and reality itself, is resolved through a negotiated truce; you accept reality, but you also need to accept yourself.

Post by: Solais on December 24, 2012, 11:32:31 PM
I watched the last four episodes today. While it was obvious what would happen (partly due to this thread), it was a good end overall.

I'm kinda glad this series came along, since it displays something that I believe to be missing from the "mainstream culture" (as I like to call it nowadays), while most people I believe to be just the same, but are afraid of showing it. I know, I'm afraid of showing as well, since it gave me so much trouble.

Maybe it's just over here, but the culture I'm coming from somehow very much has this notion of "you must grow up and act like an adult" from very early age on - after all, we had a culture where people were supposed to have job when they are 16 and get married when they are 20. This is what I always got from my parents and from others. I was hated in secondary school because I wasn't "grown up" like the others who were just drinking and partying. How boring.
In university, I wanted to make friends, yet they told me "we don't play those childish video games". And I was furious. Yet, I've seen them playing and believing in such "childish" stuff, when they thought no "authority" was present. Why do people do this, I wonder? Why do I feel all embarrassed when I'm waiting for a class, yet no one is yet there and I start to play out stuff in my head, and then someone shows up and almost sees me? Why is that our culture somehow is against the creativity of our own fantasy and beliefs (yet seemingly is okay with beliefs that are institutionalized and used to replace this creativity with their own) so much? Being called as "childish", like to force us to be like "adults", not knowing that to be a true adult, you have to be a child first.

This series basically shows all this. All the "secret" of many many people out there. The "secret" of coping with reality, coping with its blandness, its sadness, coping with the fact that we are one of many other. And while this series is as clich?d as it can be, it's overlying message is actually very good. As I always say, the world is not gray, but of many colors. And you choose the colors of painting it.

(Holy shit that was emotional! I was feeling quite meh nowadays, but now I'm in full Christmas mood I think! Also I should have inserted that C.S. Lewis quote there but oh well!)

Perhaps its just me, but I firmly believe that emotions you feel during nighttime is amplified, thus I always watch my watchlist and VNs only during the night so that I might enjoy them to the fullest. Chunnibyou is no exception, and I find that the ending is actually
a very steep emotional roller coaster (especially so if you actually watched the misleading preview) and it very nearly brought me to tears. Oddly, I find the ''Old Narrator's" voice rather calming and not really annoying at all, but that's only imo.

I did consider the possibility that the old narrator could actually be Yuuta reflecting back on his life though, and telling us a story from a long time ago. Perhaps that's another reason why I don't really feel irritated by his presence?

I think so too, that emotions are amplified in the nighttime, since most of the time you're alone and a little tired to "protect" your emotional barriers.

I watched SAO in like, two sittings. I didn't start it until episode 24 got released. I started chuunibyou from episode 6 or so. It was so much more enjoyable waiting each week for the next episode.

You must watch chuunibyou, my personal favorite this year. You'll probably end up watching it in 1 sitting. If an anime is good, I can typically watch around 12-14 episodes at one go.

You must watch chuunibyou, my personal favorite this year. You'll probably end up watching it in 1 sitting. If an anime is good, I can typically watch around 12-14 episodes at one go.

Well, I only watched SAO until episode 11 right before the climax for that game. Derpy decision and it's due to nonsensical reasons too.  :V

Regarding Chuunibyou, yeah I think I'll take it from the guy downstairs soon. Everywhere that is anime-related I go people keep mentioning Chuunibyou (sometimes even more than SAO) and how they're gonna be sad that it's going to end soon.  :3

I'm abit late watching this anime, but this is quite good, on episode 3 and it really makes me feel nostalgic of when I was a child. I admit I used to think I was a super saiyan... Shooting kamehameha from the top of the stairs downwards. I feel embarrassed watching some parts but its rather entertaining.

*update*

Having watched up to the penultimate episode, this anime is well worth me staying up all night.

Emotionally, I feel that yes people may outgrow these old ways, but we all miss the feeling of having fun and being creative and imaginative, of course with acknowledgment of reality at the back of our heads. But there is no justifiable reason to exile these feelings. Sure sometimes reality hits hard but think about it another light, than the one everyone can see from. An example would be from the Japanese movie 'Departed' in comparison. Tl;dr emotions portrayed are that of coping with hardships.

Just finished this excellent anime, the delusion fight scenes were the best, Touka's giant ladle :V

In retrospect, I feel that the ending could have been handled better, it was still great but it felt a little bit rushed for all the emotions it was trying to convey.

That. Is. Epic.

I have to do this more.

Seconded. So much better than the silly hand-wavy-action-thingy I do to get automatic doors to open.

I do that regularly, except I am like... snapping my fingers and striking a Jojo-esque pose.... 'As I thought, the gates of Hell are already opened before me...wohahahahahah!' when I was a kid.

easiest to cosplay... until Prop-building comes to mind.
That Rikka's hammer-blade thing too, it is freaking impossible to build.
