Title: [s]Survey[/s] Strongle Time! - Results Are In, Horrible Puns.
Post by: Tengukami on September 13, 2012, 01:22:43 AM
Hello, MotK. In the interests of our forum's demographics, I've put together a little survey for you to take part in, here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFpwUm9qX245bndNZExEOTN0ZWRvR3c6MQ).

All answers (answer once, please) will remain anonymous. When the survey ends, I'll post results and fully disclose the purpose of this survey. When does that happen? Within 24 hours.

Do answer honestly, but don't overthink it. This is just a fun little social experiment which may reveal a shocking truth about our little community. Enjoy!

#27 is much too simplified to answer as it is, unfortunately.

The idea here is not to think too hard on the answer, and is why there is a spectrum of agreement and disagreement, including "not sure".

By the by, this isn't a survey to reveal the political or religious affiliation of the forum. But could settle an age-old dispute once and for all.

#27 is much too simplified to answer as it is, unfortunately.
A couple of them did seem a bit generalized, but a one sentence question with a single-click answer is a lot faster than a 6 paragraph essay that could be used to respond for those ones.

This might be amusing.

Questions are really vague and complicated, I think what you want to know is better written than surveyed. I still will send my anwsers, but if I would like to say something more I will do it here.

People do not have higher and lower levels of value, but rather different kinds of values.  > Maybe then have both hinger and lower levels of values and different kinds? This question is too vague.

A religion that is constantly changing represents a weakness in that religion's moral system. > Not really, a weakness in religion, or rather is religious believes you probably wanted to ask about, is hardly measured by anything. Someone can just "belong" in the religion not really thinking much of it. Moral systems are also much beyond just religion, but religion itself have a part of it,. But in point of view, a religion that would constantly change what it believes in can't be a real religion no?

It is a mathematical certainty that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. > Mathematics aren't certain, as there is no certain thing in this world, only probabilities.

A stable family requires that parents listen to their children, but have the final word on family matters.  > Nothing wrong with this question honestly...

The government has an obligation to manage the social welfare system.  > Nothing wrong here...

There is no absolute morality, but different kinds of morality.  > Nothing wrong here...

It is important that we devote the space program to finding habitable planets elsewhere in the universe as possible migration points.  > Nothing wrong here...

Voting is ultimately useless.  > What do you mean voting? The question is really vague...

Belief in a deity is important for maintaining a stable moral code. > Nothing wrong here...

Some form of population control program will have to be implemented at some point in the next 100 years.  > Nothing wrong with this one either..

Listening to reason is better than listening to intuition. > Nothing wrong here...

Money is better spent trying to reverse environmental damage on the planet that we are on than to find another planet to live on.  > It's really hard to compare the money that would be spend on reverse environmental damage and terraforming other planets.

Sometimes, nations are justified in going to unilateral war. > Nothing wrong with that...

Religion has done more for social stability than governments.  > Nothing wrong here...

Some cultures should always remain separate. > Nothing wrong here...

It is likely that we will irreparably damage the planet and bring about our own extinction. > Nothing wrong with that...

Sometimes violently overthrowing a democratically elected government is justified.  > Nothing wrong with that...

Some people are luckier than others. > Nothing wrong here...

Technology helps humanity more than it harms it. > Nothing wrong here...

Deep down, all people are basically good. > Good as? I suspect you mean good to other people or something in moral sense...

So long as they do not break the law, immigrants should be allowed to preserve their own ethical practices. > You mean Human rights or the law in the country? The law created in any country have little to do with ethics, more with money...

You can choose to be happy, no matter what your situation in life.  > Do you mean, can any Human choose or just myself?

A job is simply a means to afford to enjoy one's interests.  > Nothing wrong with this one...

Men and women think differently from each other at a biological level. > Well you don't say what Biological level really means, but I don't think it's that vague that people would not understand the meaning of this question.

Some day we will be visited by intelligent life. > Probably everyday we will, but I guess you mean visitors from other planets yes?

Genetic engineering should never be privatized.  > Nothing wrong with that...

The world has grown more peaceful over the past 200 years.  > Nothing wrong with that...

The government can be justified in temporarily suspending human rights in the interests of national security.  > Nothing wrong with that...

It is possible to predict a future event with the aid of extrasensory perception.  > Nothing wrong with that...

There are some morals which are recognized by all people.  > Nothing wrong with that..

Doing what you love is more important than how much you get paid doing it.  > Nothing wrong with that...

Immigrants should not be required by law to learn the language spoken by most people in that country.  > Nothing wrong here..

Soveriegn nations should be allowed to develop whatever kind of military they believe suit them best.  > Nothing wrong I see there...

If we manage our resources better, we can maintain the growth of the human race.  > Implying resources management does improve "growth of the human race" whatever that means...

The key to happiness is to have simple needs.  > Nothing wrong with that..

All religions are of equal value to humanity.  > That's ok too...

It is healthy for nations to compete with each other.  > Nothing wrong here...

Humanity is too industrialized.  > Nothing wrong with that, but it's rather a question how much industrialization is too much for humanity, which is a different thing...

Overall, human beings are becoming more moral. > More moral as more good to each other or... bad to each other?

If you concentrate hard enough on achieving good luck, you can make it happen.  > Nothing wrong with that..

I thought that one was one of the easiest of the bunch. (Not trying to be smug or anything, I swear!)

I see it as a ''Do you agree that a society is better when the population is equal when it comes to money (Instead of it being very divided, where there is high-class folks and low-class people) ''

An "I agree, sorta" option was needed, too.

That would be "agree". The survey provides a spectrum of agreement based on how strongly you feel you agree or disagree with something. It's providing this spectrum of feeling of agreement/disagreement that should make it easier to answer questions that are broad and non-specific.
Title: Re: [s]Survey[/s] Strongle Time!
Post by: NekoNekoRex on September 13, 2012, 11:48:58 AM
I usually put down "strongly" when I feel the issue is important to me in some manner. Hence, "strong"

Only question I had trouble with was 36: All religions are of equal value

Which, considering I dislike the notion of religion as a whole, came as tough to answer. I put "disagree" since I considered "lack of it" a religion in the context of the question. Otherwise I would have put "agree" in the context that  "I think none of them are worth anything"

Anyway, there is a lot of vagueness in many of the questions, but I can believe that it's intentional. Did you put together the questions yourself? If so, I feel that I can see some personal bias in their wording. It's not too strong(le), but keep that in mind when analyzing the answers.

I did make these questions myself, yeah, so I expect the wording does seem personalized whether I intended it or not. Fortunately, this isn't a survey on the political or religious composition of MotK, and of course there are a portion of questions which are there to obfuscate the purpose.

I kinda started doing first impulse decisions after I realized I was probably over thinking some of these. I also started ignoring the strong options because I didn't have a good criteria to decide what was a strong feeling. That's probably the way this scale is meant to work because it's entirely possible that I just don't care strongly for any of these questions.
Some of them made me chuckle a bit, like the need for population control. No, it's fine, eventually we'll just start eating each other.

That's exactly how it's meant to work. Everyone has different degrees of value for different issues - you can agree with Platform 1 and Platform 2 but still care more about one than the other, or believe there are fewer conditions for one than the other.

MotK Survey Results

Disclaimer
I am not a statistician nor a scientist. This survey is rather intended to be a fun social experiment about our site's demographics. Any discrepancies or perceived inaccuracies should not be taken too seriously.

Debriefing
As said, this is not a survey of MotK's political or religious affiliations. Many of the questions on this survey were purposefully included in order to obfuscate the purpose of the survey, and were not factored into the final results, although the results of all questions can be seen in the raw data.

The purpose of the survey was to see which of these four Gensokyan temples the majority of MotK users would align themselves to: Moriya Shrine, Hakurei Shrine, Myouren Temple or the Hall of Dreams. Four themes were assigned to each. These attributions are based solely on my interpretation of canon, and what qualities they are assigned is purely subjective1.

Keeping that in mind,

Methodology
Each temple is represented by one of four themes. Questions were framed towards these four themes, but agreement or disagreement with the same question could represent two different temples, depending on the feeling towards it expressed.

1. Use Of Power: These were questions pertaining to the use of authority to not only maintain power but to gain it as well. This was ascribed to the the Moriya Shrine.

2. Taking It Easy: These were questions pertaining to living simply and enjoying creature comforts over ambition and control. This was ascribed to the the Hakurei Shrine.

3. Egalitarianism: These were questions pertaining to beliefs in equality between different cultures, religions and genders. This was ascribed to the Myouren Temple.

4. The Third Eye: These were questions pertaining to beliefs in being "in tune" with one's surroundings; to be able to predict and influence events without direct evidence or physical action. This was ascribed to the the Hall of Dreams.

Possible answers provided were arranged on an agreement spectrum from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree". This was done in order to gauge the emotional and personal strength with which these four categories resonated with respondents. For example: it would be possible for a respondent to agree with questions pertaining to the Use of Power and questions pertaining to Taking It Easy, but one category might resonate more strongly than another, and so the agreement spectrum was designed to gauge this.

"Not sure" responses were allocated according to agreement-to-disagreement ratios. Incomplete surveys were discarded.

1Four questions - used for obfuscation - were not counted. These were questions 3, 7, 25 and 26.

Results

There were 81 respondents in all. One was blank, and another was incomplete. Out of 79 valid respondents, and minus the 4 obfuscation questions, the following results emerged. It turns out there were two #38's, and they are labeled here as 38a and 38b:

Moriya Shine: 20% 8 - Responses to 4, 8, 17, 19, 30, 33, 37, and 38a.

Hakurei Shrine: 22%  9 - Responses to 10, 12, 13, 22, 23, 31, 32, 35 and 39.

Myouren Temple: 32%, 13 - Responses to 1, 5, 6, 11, 15, 16, 21, 24, 27, 28, 34, 38b and 40.

Hall of Dreams: 20% 7 - Responses to 2, 9, 14, 18, 20, 29, and 36.

The spreadsheet is attached, if anyone wants to view the results.

Conclusions
It was interesting to see in which questions "Not Sure" spiked. These were usually questions regarding human morality and gender. Strong agreement was found in the importance of parental authority, the benefits of technology, immigration rights, and multiculturalism, but also in darker tones, that humans are basically self-destructive. There was strong disagreement towards religion, cultural separtism, and apathy.

I hope this will settle once and for all where MotK truly stands when it comes to which temple is best. As we can all clearly see through cold, hard, unforgiving science, Myouren Temple wins.

Thank you all very much for your participation and for being such good sports.

Oh man this survey's goal was pure genius. I love you I greatly appreciate that interesting concept.

Also, the fact Myouren Temple (which is not only where I stand morally, but also love Touhou-Fandom wise) is the highest % makes me squee in pure joy.

It was interesting to see in which questions "Not Sure" spiked.
Frankly I really disliked the wording of that middle option. "Not sure", to me, implies I have no clear idea where I stand (ie, maybe this is an issue I've never really debated much), as opposed to a "middle ground" option (ie, I have a clear idea where I stand on the issue but I feel a solution/etc. doesn't lie along either views presented or that the problem can't be reduced to a dichotomy so easily)... Odds are it wouldn't have affected the outcome much anyhow, I would think. :)

As we can all clearly see through cold, hard, unforgiving science, Myouren Temple wins.

That's why I avoided choice questions; just different degrees of agreement or disagreement with a given statement. In that context, "not sure" can mean you have no clear idea, or are ambivalent.

Ara. The results seem to align a bit with the poll we had some time ago regarding which faction we liked the most. Also, I wager some people at least noticed that there were 4 distinct kinds of questions.

I was not able to see that, though I did suspect that the survey was testing for shrine alignment. Other possibilities that crossed my mind were that it was somehow Haruhi-related - hence the questions about ESP, alien life forms, etc. - or that the survey responses didn't matter at all, and it was an eon8-ish thing to see how people respond to ambiguity or something.

What ruled the latter two out for me, and clinched the first, was the comment about how this was supposed to settle a debate about the community. That was the real tip-off. :justasplanned:

e: Looking over the questions again, I'm seeing some major pro-Myouren bias in this survey :v

I think I found which answers are mine (35) by looking at the time and the first few questions. It is interesting to see which ones got lots of "not sure" responses.

And I'm still not sure which group I ended up in, though I'm certain it wasn't hall of dreams.

I was reminded of Miko when I saw #14 in the survey (Religion has done more for social stability than governments.) since Miko was all about using Buddhism as a political tool. I feel kind of silly for not realizing that it was for something like this. :V

I think my answers are row #3 in the spreadsheet, given that I took it fairly early and I hit Not Sure on practically everything and never chose anything strongly (or strongle).
My results (+ for agree, - for disagree)
Moriya: +-++
Hakurei: -++++
Myouren: +-++-
Taoism: --+++
I think I ended up on the side of Hakurei Shrine, although I'd say I prefer the Taoists a lot more. :L

Just to clear something up: results were gauged not just by whether or not someone agreed with a question, but whether they disagreed, too. I would not be surprised if questions aligned more heavily with one or more temples, despite a conscious effort to balance. And some questions might read as one temple to one person but another temple to another. Either way, that still leaves the choice to agree or disagree, and both counted towards how the response was aligned. That said, a greater number of questions aligned towards one or more temples probably did have some influence on results.

Yeah, I just realized that it's not all agreement that affects alignment since agreeing to #38a (Humanity is too industrialized) would directly contradict Moriya Shrine ideals.

How exactly should we go about checking our personal alignments?

by looking at the time and the first few questions.
That's how I found it anyway. Assuming you posted here just after submitting it, you should be able to use the time of the post to get a general idea, though you'll have to take time zones or something into consideration. Then just see which answers seem like yours. :V For example, so few people disagreed with number 3, but I knew I chose "strongly disagree," so that made it easy for me to find mine. (And yeah, taking the question literally, I think that is the definite "right answer." Rephrased like BT said, my answer would have been different.)

Oh god "(dis)agree" stopped looking like a word to my brain.

#3 was, as stated, one of the non-counting questions thrown in there to muddy the waters. It was not figured in with the results, so it didn't matter what was answered for that one.

Myouren-8
Hakurei-3
Moriya-0
Miko & Company-0

I'm surprised there were no negatives, although I guess my counting could be off.

Ammy, could you expand a little more on how each question contributed to a person's temple alignment (like I don't know whether agreeing or disagreeing with a certain topic in a category would make me more Buddhist/Taoist)?

Sure. One example is #17, which states that sometimes violently overthrowing a government is justified. Strength of agreement with this one was Moriya, with strength of disagreement would be Myouren, while simple disgreement would be Hakurei. In this case, the majority of answers leaned towards fairly strong agreement, so the response to #17 was put under Moriya.

Again, to which temple agreement or disagreement with a statement aligned was a subjective measure, based on my understanding of canon. Your mileage may vary.

Anyway, what timezone is the spreadsheet Ammy? I think I am myself hanging towards Hakurei.

All times are GMT.

Hope everyone's clear on how scoring was done here: it's not the questions, but the answers. Majority response to a single question could be one temple or another depending on agreement or disagreement. If you guys want to see what your personal temple alignment ended up being, you'll have to look at your responses to the questions and decide for yourself with which temple they reflected alignment.

I realize that's very fluid and subjective, but hey - it's Gensokyo. This was science Gensokyo-style.

Weeeeell, her first spellcard is explicitly described as being, and I quote:

''Seiga Kaku's spell card titles have kana representations of Chinese, using the ancient pronunciations Japan uses for Chinese vocabulary.
(養小鬼: A sorcery which involves taming dead spirits using dead foetus corpses to use as tools''

Nitori's often depicted as eating shirikodama as a snack in fanworks. Do you... know what those are? I think waving dead fetuses around to tame spirits pales in comparison to casually munching on butt-spirits...
...Actually, maybe not. But they're both weird. ...Nitori should open her own shrine dedicated to SCIENCE!, IMO.

It would be so wonderful. And yes, I pretty much wtf'ed when I read Aya's commentary on Nitori's last spellcard in Double Spoiler. ''So what were those bullets any- WHAT THE HELL ANUS BALLS DX''

And now, whenever I see Miko's non-spells, I can only think of those :V Makes her boss fight so much more hilarious, really.

Quote from: Wikipedia
As water monsters, kappa have been frequently blamed for drownings, and are often said to try to lure people to the water and pull them in with their great skill at wrestling.[12] They are sometimes said to take their victims for the purpose of drinking their blood, eating their livers or gaining power by taking their shirikodama (尻子玉?), a mythical ball said to contain their soul which is located inside the anus.[12][14][15][16]

Yep, we all know surveys always end up with Seiga and her pedophiliac necrophilia, only to become a thread about assballs. This forum is wonderful. :*

Speaking of which, I seriously think Seiga is a necrophiliac. Dumped her husband (who was alive), resurrected a corpse as a servant, waves around dead fetuses, teaches a bunch of girls how to kill themselves and come back to life, fake her death...

I just realized how much sense it makes.

My theory is that whatever Marisa had to communicate with Nitori was actually a mystic artifact made by Yukari that allows her to seal inside the soul of dead people. During her journey through the old hell, Marisa's encounters with the evil spirits affected Nitori who morphed into Yoshika (Mind-wise). After SA, she was released from the whatever-thingy and her soul was attracted by Seiga's fetus waving (as that is exactly what it does) and possessed a nearby corpse, creating what we know as Yoshika!

...Right?

Because Comic Sans and Papyrus  are horrible, horrible fonts.

Oddly enough, though, Comic Sans is endemic in the corporate world. Go figure.

Pun are on par, say, with dead baby jokes. Nobody can accomplish a very high level of humor with them, yet once started they may linger for a while before the subject is exhausted. If you want my opinion, sir, no amount of effort will make a pun truly shine. You may copy them down from a website or you can come up with your own, but the result is always the same. Once again, sucky or lame, puns are the worst.

Keep 'em comin' though. ^-^

You have a weird accent. ;)

Well then, let's do this in order of games, shall we?

The fact that when we use puns, we all fail, is something we shouldn't debate. Sure, as a quick one-time joke, puns may wreak havoc on one's spleen, but where's the real sustenance? Mankind wears his hatred like a coat - oh, he may show what you may mistaken for kindness once in a while but don't be fooled: you can't ignore all the wars we've gotten ourselves into.
You keep on thinking there's something to be proud of when it comes to puns. But real humor is ingrained in the cruelty of man's history (millions of years old and still as bloody as the dark ages! Die, you say? We've done a lot of that.)

You don't gain anything from mere puns. The melancholybaaah, that was easy... of others is so much richer with humor. My german friend got hit by a car once; his knee? Tore it right off on impact. Now that's humor he couldn't quite experience himself, but I was in stitches (come to think of it, so was he). We're cool about it now btw; signed "Kiss me, I'm crippled!" on his cast and all; in his own words, "Un zhen, ve had a good laff about eet." So he found it funny too in the end.

Notice the buildup? Puns don't have that. I guess you could say god-damned awesome humor needs to come from something emotional and powerful at its source. Such as the pain and suffering of others. So quit acting like pun-mastery is something brag-worthy - it's a weak humor form. ;)

Well, nine thirty. Bar ah keep headin' down to, here I come!  :V

But does this thread love us? I mean, assballs, puns, and dead babies. It's been a pretty messed up ride for all of us. But to what end? What if this thread has become so nonsensical and weird as to have acquired sentience? And maybe, just maybe, it's angry. Real angry.

Of course it loves us!  Threads are like a parasite. They can't live and thrive on their own. In order to live it picks a topic that interest people and when people become interested it injects them with a poison that makes them keep coming back for more! Sometimes it injects too much and causes people to become delusional and when that happens people derail the thread into random nonsense but, it's all good for the thread.  HaHaHaHa IsN'T It GrEaT?  :V
