I let my younger brother play EoSD, but he quit playing when got lost all his lives to Cirno. He hasn't played since that moment.

People saying they get headaches from playing Touhou seems to be a common theme.

I haven't done it with anyone. Nearly my entire family hates video games.;_;

Lured. You make it sound like you were giving them drugs or something.

"Hey kids, wanna play a Japanese game?"
"Yeah!"

But that's exactly what it is! A virtual, all-encompassing drug. :ohdear:

When I got started I died to Wriggle. On easy.

I have died to being Wriggle Kicked before. This makes me sad.

When first I started, I died before midboss Rumia. On easy. Yes, really. This is what happens when you've never played a vertical-scrolling danmaku game in your life. (Having played all of two video games before didn't help, either.)

I've died to a rumia kick before too, and sakuya kicks... I learned by the time I started playing IN though.

My bro tried EoSD once and that's pretty much it. I forgot how far he got, I think it was just after midboss china before he ran out of continues. I was watching and telling him "use your bombs" every time there was more than 0 bullets on the screen but he only used 1 bomb the whole time. He used to pride himself for playing games on hard mode before I ever did too, wtf happened. Super scrub nowdays >=P

Everyone has kicked me. Everyone.

Nobody I have introduced this series to has been kicked. Ever.

And that's terrible.

My dad doesn't play games but he had me playing IN everyday so he can listen to History of the Moon.
The he spends the evening with my mom arguing about how better History of the Moon than Gensokyo the Gods loved.

I'm neutral most of the time but I agreed with mom that Gensokyo the Gods loved is slightly better.

wow what a pro he must be to have imported the game all the way from japan and quit it immediately after
(About 20 minutes later)
"I tried the game, it owned me on the first level."
"You got the game?  ??? How and when? XD"
"I have my ways.. o_O"
":/"
Whatever. =O

And since the topic is apparently how badly you failed your first time...
Really, I'd heard IN was the most noob-friendly, so I started with that. I used MAlice(Seriously, I started using the MAlice cannon before I even knew it had a name. O_O) and caught on somewhat fast, since I'd seen maybe 4 6-9-minute videos. I really sucked so I bombed a lot. 90% of the time I wouldn't have died, but at least I didn't. Failed somewhere on the second level after getting caught up staring at the patterns. :V

In other news, my brother keeps using Touhou as a type of blackmail/leverage on me. "I'll read the 'Flandre story' if you play the wii with me", "If you so-and-so I'll watch [Insert some Touhou music/video]", etc. None of it works of course. I did manage to make him get a Cirno background and a lot of songs stuck in his head, though, so we'll see how that works out.

I've been kicked by Kogasa before. Her midboss hitbox is MASSIVE.

My brother became completely absorbed into Touhou by the time I showed it to him, he played PCB first and ran out of continues at Alice (normal mode), he played StB (or was it Double Spoiler...) And accused China of using melee instead of danmaku.

My mother has seen little snippets of gameplay and a heck of a lot of my Touhou pictures folder and doesn't seem to care.

My father watched me fight Eirin's last spellcard and he described it as, and I quote "Trying to dodge rice"

You can't get kicked if you hug the bottom. Most noobs hug the bottom to my knowledge. They are scared of the bullets. They have no confidence in their reflexes because they know that no matter how slow they are they will kill them if they get hit.

I keep telling people that you won't get anywhere if you stand around the center of the screen hugging the bottom and that they need to move around aggresively. Kill enemies as fast as possible and PoC whenever possible to get points which leads to lives.

In other words, getting kicked on your first times through means you might've got a knack for shmupping.  ;)

Who gets kicked on their first try? :P
I didn't hug the bottom when I started, I just didn't recognize a lot of the conventions like streaming and herding (I think that's what it's called? PCB S.4 for reference) and frequently screwed them up.
I was okay at micrododging and have gotten better since then, but that doesn't keep me from panicking as often as I did then now :fail:
Other times I made silly dodging mistakes like unfocus to dash away and hit something I wasn't looking at, or to forget about what isn't moving and run into IMMOBILE DANMAKU.

There doesn't seem to be a "Your first experiences with Touhou" thread so this off-topic spiel is fine

Man, forget Touhou. No one in my family is a fan of anime, video games, or science in general, let alone privvy to them on any level. A couple of my folks know some anatomy and programming, but that's it.

My brother and I. He better than me. He's (I think) EoSD, PCB, IN, MoF, still working on SA, UFO, and The Great Fairy Wars.
I've only beaten IN, and just barely.
Oh... I got yin yang-ed.
