Title: The party at Scarlet Devil Mansion - Part I [ Time = 20:00 ][Finished + Results]
Post by: Helepolis on June 12, 2010, 02:57:13 PM
The party at the Scarlet Devil Mansion ? Part I
An puzzle adventure board game with fixed players. Depending on the interest and my time I will play another round with different members. Maximum entry, (10) players.

Description:
You have received a personal invitation from Remilia Scarlet to the exclusive party at the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Your job is to attend the party with a gift and survive it.

Gameplay
By PMing me your actions. Because the game is a puzzle RPG, use your intelligence to understand the possibilities and opportunities. In the follow section I will explain the core commands.

Actions are:
Move <North/East/South/West> - move to the target location. See the map. (costs time) +30min
Lookaround ? gives specific detailed information of your area (costs time) +30min
Talk <person> - talk to the person (costs time) +30min
Yes/No/choice ? conditional incase possible (does not cost time)
Use/purchase ? use card or purchase (does not cost time) ((multiple items can be in the same time frame))

Game info and rules
The game flow as follow:
- All players start at the human village at 7:00
- Guest will be arriving between 19:00 and 20:00
- Party starts at 20:00 exactly
- Party ends at 02:00
- Each player plays this on turns. A PM means a turn. Most actions make you waste 30min in game. See the actions list which ones do.
- I will constantly update the post.
- Certain unforeseen events can delay you even longer. Dicing (2d20) can occur.
- You start with two (2)  random cards. Cards will be visible when shuffled and dealt.
- You start with 100 units of life.
- You got money to purchase things only once.
- I don?t care if you PM each other for information sharing. Game is last man standing or most points.
- Each card can be played once, excluding the Invitation card. This one can be always played and will not disappear through regular use.
- Scoring is given to correct actions or events.

ALL ACTIONS ARE PMED TO ME.
!) I will announce the actions and your action will be permanent, thus no changing or roll back possible. Think carefully. I won?t help out in making decisions or giving information.
!) Please use QUOTE reply for PMs when answering a conditional msg.

Global tips
- I expect actually nobody to succeed on the first run. Because the game is simply extremely difficult.
- Think carefully about each of your actions as everything you do has consequences or different outcomes.
- Each card can be used only once (except your invitation card, this one can be used endless times) at any desired time and/or location. Use your cards wisely. As death can be just around the corner
- You might have noticed the game is based on strict time management. And some would have guessed that it is very tight. Don't waste time if you know what to do obviously. (For example too much lookingaround)
- To somewhat make it less difficult: lookaround action on the movement squares (outside human village for example) does nothing. So don't waste your time.
- Your starting point (the square you are on, which is your house) is nothing special, don't waste action commands here either.
- The order in which you perform your actions / cards can be extremely important. Think wisely again.
- the big ? on the squares on the map is a secret =P your choice whether to move over it or not.

To clarify more on how to play:
Example on how to PM me. Everybody use the same. PM title: PATSDM (so I can know its for the game). Let's act if you are 1 square removed from Marisa's house.

Code: [Select]
[PM number 1] 8:30 (Turn #1)
# Move East

Your location is updated, your timer is increased to 9:00. Your turn is now over.

[PM number 2]  9:00 (Turn #2)
# Talkto Marisa
# Use card <card>

You combined the card immediately within the dialogue. Your timer increases to 9:30. You receive a dialogue with conditional (yes/no) info. But your turn is over so you can think and plan ahead while waiting for your turn again.

[PM number 3] 9:30 (Turn #3)
# Yes

You chose yes, something will happen. No time is added because it is a conditional reply. You will receive another PM from me. Based on this PM you can choose to move for example.

[PM number 4] 9:30 (Turn #3)
# Move West

You chose to move out of the house, timer is increased and your turn is over now.

This is basically how it works. I can understand it is extremely difficult to manage for me and you. But PM method is highly crucial as vital spoiling information is received over PMs. This could mean that the last player will have beneficial advantage of information before making his/her move.

That is why I will (try) to update the map and announcements simultaneously with each turn cycle (aka when everybody has made their move)

*Scribbles down random stuff*

Right now, I'm feeling... Um, paranoia, fear, anxiety, joy... I'll probably be verrry cautious in this game.
Also, my brain is working like it never has worked since I finished that last Professor Layton game.

God, this is so fun!

Announcement:

I updated the map as it seems to confuse people. The Human village is a square its self, you need to move first onto this before you can move further. Hence I typed in the global tips: That your starting square = your house. Only the arrow can be ignored as movement square.

Edit: Currently not crucial in the start up phase, but from now on please use QUOTE reply to all replies in this game. It makes it easier for me to reply swiftly back and keep the pace. Thank you =3

Is there a clause for turn-delaying for people who haven't answered for a while? I'm talking because of timezones and such jazz.

Yes I have been receiving several PMs about this. On turn like this is a bit of a hassle. We are going to change that now from on turn PM to Mass PM. So everybody can PM, but the order of handling will be according to the list.

I see :V

Timezones are troublesome. GTM +1, and I don't think very many of the people here live in a country with that timezone.

I woke up to receive two PMs

One was from the quoted poster for my game

The other one was from Helepolis

This meant my turn actually started when I was sleeping. Fecking timezones!

Time zones ARE straight down BS.
The cool people of MotK doesn't need them! *Nukes*
Anyways, why was I a nine-ball? D:

Actually, at least half of the players are in non-American timezones, and four of those are in GMT +0 / +1 :V

Oh well.

In any case, I hope this new system works out better. It probably will, because timezones are a giant SOB

Welp, this has turned out to be interesting. It's not possible to visit the Hakurei Shrine and still make it to the party on time. In fact, it's not possible to visit any location without being late for the party. You guys be careful about that.

There is precisely one place you can visit and make it BARELY to the party.

Two places, actually, but that's given that we go through a  ? square. And never, ever lookaround. Considering that the game is out to get us, I would severely advise against going through a ? square. Which basically means the safest option is to camp outside the SDM for a bit.

That's true. There is the high possibility of going through a ? square and getting screwed over. And if you want to be on time and still look around, you're only going to be given a marginal amount of time to use the Look option, even using the shortest possible non-? path. In other words, whoever wins, we all lose.

It's a risk I'm willing to take.

Actually, the path of least resistance gives you three to four hours' spare time, depending on when you want to arrive.

If it wasn't useful, then why would we even be given the option to begin with?

It also could be the GM trying to trick us... You aren't trying to trick us, are you? ;_;

Results posted. And I got really surprised by most people who blew it during the final act. Most people wasted their time talking to Sakuya, except for the ones who triggered her during 19:00 which gave them a secure chance.

Discussion may begin.

The moment I saw how unreasonable going to Hakurei Shrine seemed, combined with the possession of Donations, I had my plan made up. No risk no fun  :D
I didn't expect it to play out that perfectly though, hehehe~

Statement that guests will be arriving between 1900 and 2000 is misleading. I was under the assumption that arriving at 2000 was fine.

Yes and no.

It is correctly stated 20:00 is the party starting time. 19:30 is in between 19 and 20. Meaning commands for 20:00 are not possible. Most people started talking to Sakuya without using their invitation card at 19:30 while they did use it at Meiling. I can understand the possible assumption for this, that is why I hinted several this was the final commands as well as posted in this thread. Sakuya was a blockade which required simply to reuse invitation card + gift card. Not being able to give a gift leads to death as well.

ShiningDrake was the most unfortunate one for getting robbed by Yukari, however he got hinted as well a suspicious person passed by right before he entered Kourindou.

Dick move, man, dick move

Well played on that note, but it was still a dick move

EDIT: Okay, it seems that my failure was mostly due to the fact I had no idea it was possible to trigger Sak at 19:00, in fact, I had actually intentionally wasted time because of some time miscalculations and the fact I had no idea what the fuck to do at the end so :S

The fact that it was Yukari was obvious when she passed by. However, I didn't expect her to freaking ROB ME >.< And when that happened, I guess I was screwed.

Also, this game was referred to as "hard" previously, but that's not what it seems like to me. It's trial-and-error. The only way to get through without knowing everything is pretty much to stumble your way in the right direction. Just saying.

Stumbling away is indeed a correct word. I'll agree on that.

But seeing Fightest having the donation card, he didn't moved to the Hakurei shrine. Even if Fightest would get there in time, he would die for not having a gift, same to you ShiningDrake :V but yea you got robbed by Yukari.

So the flute doesn't count as a gift? There was no way I could have known that.

There were 'Toys' as a point in the possible-presents-list? Why not a flute then?

Of course anything can be a present but the question is will it fit the taste of the presentee?
That's one of the reasons why I chose the Flowers and not the wine.

Anyway I consider "Mission Little Red Riding Hood" as success.

There is nothing about "taste" in the rules of the game. As no descriptions of the items on hand are present, it's not possible to judge in any way the quality of the item.

On a slightly different point: the safest route through the game is also the most boring one. There should be no possible route that is boring.

Also, the very opening briefing of the game is misleading, as I had originally thought that the game would go on until each person was either dead or had left the party successfully upon its conclusion. I.e. much, much later than 2000 hours.

Well, as far as I know, this will still happen. Note that this thred is called Part I . Part II will be the actual party.

This entire game can be compared to those game levels where you die like 1000 times before passing 10cm of it. Perhaps I overdid it by making it look like that. But it is also funny that nobody took the risk to go to the other locations first, as they grand you eventually greater advantage as you could see in the description.

Part II between three players is going to be pretty fast I guess. But it has to wait after holiday I guess. =/

Second place, oh yeeeeah.

Wasn't sure I'd survive after I missed that turn, but :V Sort of missed all the interesting effects given my run straight to the Hakurei Shrine, though.

The rules say that you have to "attend the party with a gift" and what else do you use as criterion for gifts than taste? But I have to agree upon the quality question, a descriptions of the items would be a great help.
