Welcome to the pilot issue of the periodic Touhou tournament. It is meant to gauge interest and see if there are any changes to be made with the format. Play the games and have fun doing so!

=== Tournament format ===
There are two playing weeks: from 1st to 8th, and from 15th to 22nd days of the month.

You play two games each week. You may play either or both — as you wish.

First week is score challenge. Survival, playing preferences and other things are ignored, only score is what counts. Scoring will commence on all modes/difficulties. You only get to use a certain character type in either game which will be announced upon the start.

Second week is special challenge. Restrictions will be announced upon the start.

There is no cap on amount of submissions, there is no cutoff for scores. Completing the game/Extra stage is not required for submission.

moozooh.. I would participate but right now (and for the next week) I must dedicate all my free time towards Battle Garegga.. even though I'm not good with scoring on Touhou (but would spend all my efforts, regardless of that detail)

I'm no score player but i'll give it a shot haha. I'm playing EoSD now on hard anyway though I can't actually beat it (always GO'ed at Sakuya)
I assume we have to actually beat the game/extra in order for it to count right?
This'll be fun perhaps hehe

Submit any amount you want, the highest ones will count in the end. Completing the game (or Extra stage) isn't required. There are no cutoffs, so anything will do.

Should you only be able to enter in one difficulty level? I predict the same people winning over and over again (when it comes to score), so I wonder if that should be allowed.

In any case, this was good enough to post in the high scores list. As in, if I tried hard enough I could probably beat Heartbeam's current score. Bomb more aggressively, pay a bit more attention to the amount of bullets on screen clear, not die as much, etc (no this is not a challenge screw off please)

All difficulty levels are allowed. Experienced players having higher scores is not a problem — they're supposed to have them! The goal is making more players experienced by creating more experience gaining-friendly conditions and a motivation to play. This is why people should bother posting all scores they do, on all modes, even if they're bad.

My first attempt at scoring after watching some replays and learning about things like the grazing on Silent Selene. Much, much higher than my previous high score. I can definitely improve on this, though; I missed a load of point items, could have grazed more, and didn't capture Maze of Love or Q.E.D., which was kind of annoying. :V

This run was pretty awful. Died with 3 bombs in stock against Rumia, reached Cirno at 60 Power, rammed into a solitary bullet in stage 3, had the totally awesome idea of timing out "Sellagina 9"...

BUT, I reached Stage 4, which is the furthest I got in any Lunatic! Reached the books 0/0, with obvious results.

I'll try to do better if non-Lunatic players start uploading their lol-awesome runs too.

First extra clear without the hitbox patch and with MarisaB.
Still, no matter how much I hate playing as Marisa, I've captured all of Flan's cards except for Maze of Love and the final 2.

1 death on stage, 1 on ATWTBN(no hitbox, stupid twitchy Marisa) and 1 on QED.

Also, beat my ReimuB(accidentally typed ReimuA since I usually use either MarisaA/ReimuB, so I just reverse A/B) record by 24m, which I find really weird.

Hum, didn't cap Q.E.D. this time.  The rest of the battle was fine except for bombing the last several seconds of her survival to ensure I didn't miss out on the point items.  A little of the circle grazing for her second spell, otherwise it's all the same.  Very little bullet bonus timing, if at all.  Forgot where to end that second spell for the 1M+ bonus.

MarisaA isn't bad at all in UFO and the laser is easy to get used to.

Stupid mistakes in stages 2,3 and 4 yet still finished with 3 lives, so I can grab a few blues along the way.

Extra was a bad stage run as usual, then perfect Nue until the very end of Rainbow UFO, then a laser spawned on me during her survival then stupidly clipped Yorimasa Genzanmi. All 3 with bombs left. Meh.
By the way, what is the clear bonus for remaining lives? pm me or post it with the next score.... :V

Phar: The trick is to skyrocket point item value by Grazing (10 graze = +10 to value) and to spend the early stages spamming Multicolor UFOs.  Grabbing a UFO Token while a UFO is active is a +500 to point value.  For comparison, Easy Mode starts at 5,000 Value.  At the end of Stage 1, that value can be more than doubled (~11000-12000) with the right route and using Rainbow UFOs - which pays off when you can get Blue UFOs going in stage 5/6 that can be worth over 200,000,000 when destroyed!
But of course you can still net a payoff beforehand - my Hard beats the currently-listed 70k record without even reaching boss Ichirin, while that run made it to stage 4, because I've boosted the crap out of my point value already.

Again, a higher score than my previous (two) clears on Hard mode. GO'd on Eternal Meek(ran out of bombs :D). I really liked my performance on Patchouli though. It was almost perfect. I'm so used to using Reimu on Water Elf though ><;

Okay lets have a quick preview about this run. Died on Nazrin's 1st SC while grazing, not good, but I move on because I take a safer route which hoard many extra lives on stage 1 and 2. Stage 2 mainly okay except post mid-boss Kogasa which I missed destroying red UFO causing. Stage 3 is pretty okay meh. I clipped on normal midboss Ichirin while super grazing. I mistaken on post Kogasa fairy waves and get the 2 blue UFOs instead of summoning a rainbow one. Successfully supergrazed boss Ichirin's 1st without miss, and chickened out not to try Unzan's eye safespot. Stage 4 is great i think, until i messed up at post Nue, and lol at dying at Murasa's Capsize because of lack of concentration. Then it went okay. Stage 5 is satisfying because i hadn't have the chance to try this route but able to summon the UFOs at crucial moment. I still have no clue at earlier phase of stage 6, but able to pick all blue items at Galaga Fairies and summoned blue UFO at Nue.

Graze count is 13000~, final item point value is 59000~

I think this run is good considering i have no expirience at scorerunning UFO.

Btw, where is moozoh? He hadn't updated the score for a while.

A quick last run.  I don't know why I was chasing after red and green UFOs in stage six when I should have been trying to fix the issue of not being at max power.  Not like I'll actually need a whole lot of resources for the final battle, right?  No item cache from Nue.

First time supergrazing endstage Ichirin's opener in the run before and it failed miserably.  I figured this run I'll graze it until I die then finish the opener the regular way.  Instead there were no deaths but the eye grazing was a total failure.  Miraculously failed Byakuren's second spell.

Oh yes, some odd 13,000 graze and 66,000 item value.

Going to forsake PCB scoring for once.  The result...wasn't too far off from what it would have been had the regular scoring run played out as intended.  Mostly from having no idea what I'm doing.  I'm only proud of dying at the beginning of stage six then destroying most of the fairies for mass borders.  Only two went off when they all vacuumed in, though.  Probably because I died too late and missed some of the fairies, possibly ones carrying a large stock and the large hit to the cherry value due to all the failed spells.

Should've practiced Stage 4 everything, Stage 4 in particular though. I'm going to be kicking myself over this now. There's still plenty of room for improvement here. Accidentally timing out Spell Cards instead of finishing them off closer to the timer happened more than once too. At least grazing the suns went alright. Managed to get into the blind spot for Utsuho's opener twice IIRC.

Copying the scorerunners for Parsee's opener isn't such a bad idea. The risk is pretty high for a petty hundred or so Graze though. Also, Stage 5 was pretty on and off.

I'll see your estimate and raise it up to 42K.  For this run there was about a 4K graze difference from the WR after the first four stages.  Ghost Wheel suicides were poorly timed and some other stuff like finishing with spare lives.  Safespotted the opener once.

there seem to be lots of planning (potential graze sources across stages and bosses) and execution demands (everytime a shmup demands me to not only dodge the bullets, but to graze them, it represents to me an additional task, it's a bit distracting as I'm led to watch out for the bullets around me instead of anticipating the possible paths that I should follow, and the bullets' paths, it's frustrating to lose lives that way, and I'm not yet familiar with the graze hitbox vs. the inner hitbox).
Like I said in the irc channel, grazing is a reason why I restarted quite a lot of times after dying in stage 1 in Raiden Fighters Jet (and I didn't graze past that point, ever, because there's so many other stuff past that point that can ruin my playthroughs)

I was originally aiming at 6k, but during this run realized I could even get to 10k. However, ineffective bomb usage on stage 2 and at least a couple of totally avoidable deaths prevented me from reaching that.

Garlyle, you might want to check this replay out and see if it's of any use to you. I don't think anything I did would be difficult to reproduce.

Too late to squeeze this in with an edit.  No stress, that's good.  Not to say stress is all bad, but SA on a difficult mode with Marisa-C was bad.  Sort of missed the point of the challenge with that run, but it wouldn't feel right to partake in it without a single 1CC.

The idea was to use part of the spell background to line up at the right horizontal level for safespotting Sanae's third spell, but I should have been moving into position during her second spell because I forgot the background disappeared in between.  Koishi's battle was very satisfactory until her sixth and eighth spell where I felt like some sort of super bullet magnet.  Eventually realized my plan of playing safe might not meet the lonely competition and suicided twice on the last noncard to sit on Koishi.
