2015 FIFA Women's World Cup
« on: June 08, 2015, 09:11:11 PM »
I forgot to make this thread over the weekend; I remember 4 years ago a couple people didn't even realize that there was even a World Cup going on until I posted the results of the finals (sad too, it was a great tournament).

Today is day 3 in Canada, and the main thing you'll probably notice if you haven't been paying attention during the build-up is how bad the fields are. This year's WWC is being played exclusively on artificial turf, a strong point of contention for many of the players but unfortunately they withdrew their lawsuit when FIFA refused to budge on the issue (honestly I wouldn't be surprised if threats were also levied).

As far as play on the pitch goes, we've had two days that couldn't be more different. Day one saw Canada and Netherlands pull out 1-0 victories (Canada needed a controversial 91' penalty). Day two, on the other hand, saw two blow outs by Norway (4-0) and title-favorites Germany (10-0). Today we have four games, including returning champions Japan taking on Switzerland and the USA taking on Australia. Both games should be very fun to watch.

On a more personal level, I'm really going to pay attention to Canada's reactions to Sydney Leroux and if we'll have a repeat of 2013. I admit I never paid special attention to her until I saw this video on ESPN. I love the ending especially; you really don't see a ton of obviously mixed-race stars in sports, usually they're pigeonholed into one race or the other. As someone who was born to a Caucasian/Brazilian-American mother and an African-American father, it's a welcome sight. While I understand Canada's frustration in her always wanting to play in the USA,  it's not like she's the first/only star player to be born and raised in one country and then join the senior team of another, "better" soccer nation. It happens to everyone.

Whoops i have forgotten to keep up on this.

Biggest news of the knockout stage so far happened yesterday. Australia won their first knockout game ever at the WWC after upsetting Brazil 1-0. Other winners were France, Canada, China, and favorites Germany.

Today we have Norway versus England and USA versus Colombia. The latter  is particularly fascinating because a Colombia player not only says the US will lose because they talk too much, but the player that said so already punched a US player during the Olympics a couple years ago. Probably not the smartest move, but we'll just have to wait to see.

Wow, England provides another shocker. 2-1 over Norway despite being on their back foot for the better part of the game.

Halftime. I hate to say it but Colombia is playing arguably the better game as far as flow goes. USA has more shots on goal, but the pace of the game and calls/cards are definitely not in their favor. The ref is calling the game very tightly (almost every flop is a foul) and the US is not making adjustments. I know a lot of people hate when refs call flops (I really do too) but the fact is if the ref is calling them you have to deal with it; complaining won't change the end result if you lose. Now even if the USA wins they have 2 players suspended for the next game with yellow card accumulation.

I'm honestly a little worried about the 2nd half.

I'm not too concerned about Holiday, but losing Rapinoe is a huge blow. She's pretty much the only non-goalie to actually show up for the USWNT this tournament.

The defense as a whole has been solid really. It's the midfield and, especially, the forwards that worry me. The USA has won 2-0 but all the announcers can do is criticize the play of the USWNT under the current manager. If it wasn't for the red card early in the 2nd half this could've been a much different game.

Next is a very good China team, and even if they get pass them you have the likes of France, Germany, and possibly Japan in the quarterfinals. I hate to sound like a downer but if the US doesn't fix this attacking and passing problem there is no chance they are winning the title. Hell I'd worry about not earning a "medal" at this point.

Japan and Netherlands was a great, great match. Japan had an absolutely beautiful 2nd goal. That said the Netherlands never stopped fighting and for a split second I believed they could do the impossible and score twice in the final 2 minutes to send the game into extra time. I really enjoyed this match.

With that, the quarter-finals are set:

USA vs China - 1999 finals rematch
Germany vs France - Arguably could've been a championship matchup this year
Australia vs Japan - The underdogs vs the defending champs
England vs. Canada - The "home" of soccer and the hometown heroes

My word how can you not be excited for these matches?!

USA is back in the finals!!! :toot:

Ok to be devil's advocate, that 2nd half was certainly something else. The ref had a great first half, then had 3 questionable calls in the 2nd half in like a 5-minute span.

1) The US defender should've been sent off with a straight red on the penalty.
2) Solo probably should've gotten a Yellow for freezing the Germany penalty taker.
3) Morgan got fouled outside of the box but was given a penalty.

I felt really bad for Germany during that stretch, I know what it's like to see your team seemingly hated by the refs. If possible I would've loved to not have a game called that bad at any point, but FIFA is stubborn in that regard.

That 2nd goal though was beautiful, especially Lloyd's footwork to juke the defenders and the perfect pass to O'Hara.

In the end, a great game that was arguably ruined by some questionable calls.

I'm now going to put on my nationalist pride hat and look forward to Sunday. All tournament I've blasted the USWNT; questioning the tactics, the lack of offense, the lack of "beauty" to their game. Today they showed up in a big way and beat a team I honestly thought would win the tournament. Dare I believe that this year will be different than 2011? Dare I believe?

Good god the bias of the English commentators on the BBC of the England vs Japan game. Thanks for reminding me why I root against England for every football game.

No way in hell was that a penalty.

[match now over] Couldn't have asked for a better way for England to have been eliminated! I do feel sorry for Bassett though. No hate on her as she did a good job during the match - she didn't deserve that. Nonetheless, I screamed the house down in celebration for it. Now it's USA vs Japan in the final and a derby match for 3rd place.

I had to think about it, but personally I go with Edible, at least as a fan. At least with the Brazil-Germany game it was over early and swiftly. It hurt but at the end of the day you can look back and say you lost to a much better team. I remember the guy who solemnly gave his World Cup trophy replica to the German fans and think that was a perfect reaction to what happened once the tears dried. Also remember the Brazil fans applauded the German players when they made it 7-0; they knew that they were watching true greatness and were just outmatched that day.

(Of course that's all personal opinion and interpretation)

That's not the case with a 92' own goal in a tied game. Many people have already argued England was in fact the better team and there's no denying that they had their chances to win. One second you're thinking you have 30 more minutes to win the game, the next second a great defender on your team ends the dream with an own goal and there's no time for you to do anything about it. Bassett had a great World Cup, but now all people will remember her for is that own goal.

EDIT: Just asked my mom, and she's the opposite as me. She'd rather her team have a chance at the end than watch them get blown out.

Didn't realize the game would be this early, so I missed the first 105' of England vs Germany. Don't have much to say on the match except congratulations to England; I highly doubt it was easy to regroup in such a short time and beat the #1 team in the world (whom they have never beaten before).
