The games server, Henrietta, is sitting around with a lot of idle power. So why not put those resources to use by telling us what games you'd like to see a server being made for.
Key points that will get your suggestion approved are:
1) Interest level. If the server will draw a good population, then we'll have a community. We're here to play together with as many people as possible.
2) Availability of alternatives. If there are already lots of servers for the game in question available, we'd just end up competing for activity with them. But don't take this the wrong way. Sometimes you just want a place to play the popular games without the nuisance of a poor userbase. Share why you'd like a new place to play and we'll consider it.
The 2 points are the basic criteria but we can do exceptions. If it's a game that's hard to find servers for and doesn't take a lot of resources to run (e.g. NetHack/Crawl), we'll work something out for you.
-
As a technical note, it has to fit the following two criteria, no if ands or buts.
1) It has to have a Linux-compatible server
2) It has to be free (not the game itself but the server)
If it doesn't fit either then we can't host it.
-
Runescape, im sure its out there. For popularity it wont any get livelier (deader) then RO. :V
-
I would probably play Runescape, If I was bothered to get a Premium account and I didn't have an English Critical Evaluation to do, sorry :/

Are there even Runescape private servers? Who the heck plays that garbage? :V
-
Suprisingly a quick google search makes it looks like they have them

back in my day this garbage was amazing :3
also it can't be as bad(funny?) seeing you in a dress :P
-
I don't know what others think but personally i would love to see a MotK Minecraft server. Either for survival or creating awesome stuff.
-
now that i thought about it... how the hell do runescape private servers work :V
-
I vote Minecraft. Mostly because my server is broken and yeah.
-
I believe we can't do Minecraft because of how resource intensive it gets. This main server is supposed to be shared among all our games.
-
As long as it isn't WoW or MapleStory i'm in. :V
EDIT: Scratch it, if we stuck together and helped eachother ACTUALLY get levels i'd consider Maplestory, but I'm not assuring it. :V
-
I'll suggest GTA: SA with SAMP (San Andreas Multi Player) due to the Touhou mod, which (not surprisingly) very few servers if any host.
However, we're still trying to iron out the kinks in MP and get spellcards (in the form of CLEO scripts) working.
-
Minecraft is a no because of resources. It is a horribly resource intensive thing to host (hello 2GBs of RAM). We'd like to but it's just not in the cards with our current resources.
No on Runescape/MapleStory/WoW. People have gotten cease and desist letters and their sites shutdown for hosting such servers so I don't even want to get close to that hornet's nest. Only reason I host an RO server is because Gravity doesn't give a crap and hasn't gone after anyone except people who are actively trying to make money off their server.
GTA:SA is a maybe but from what I understand it's pretty buggy server wise. I'll have to do some research on it.
-
What options are there for fightan games? Kaillera server?

What options are there for fightan games? Kaillera server?
Seconding this, but wouldn't we also have to coordinate emulators as well? (haven't played online on them in a while, so....)
I would also have suggested Cube 2: Sauerbraten server but there are already many (empty) ones, especially in Europe, and the game itself, while free, is very obscure.
As for GTA: SA, well, the PC version was never originally designed with MP capability, so SAMP is entirely community-driven. Result is somewhat stable but still it is a bit shaky.
-

GGPO is essentially superior to everything else so there's not much of a need for an MotK kaillera server or whatever. And mizuumi.net covers the fitan games Touhou/Doijun wise.

Unreal Tournament. :smug:
-
Unreal Tournament. :smug:
Assuming it's the 1999 one...then I say Quake III with ioquake3 source port!
...but IIRC both games still have active communities, so neither will likely fly.
-
Q3 maybe, but UT99 really doesn't. Plus there's all sorts of room for us to put our own spin on things. I have I think every single CTF and Assault map ever made, and I got some zany mutators (and custom weapons I made).
UT99 definitely piques my interest, I'll think about it. Maybe UT2K4 if you want a more modern variant.
-
Oh man, a good old school arena twitch FPS would be awesome. Definitely in favor of that.
Screw this modern realistic crap in competitive FPS today >:|
-
I'm definitely leaning towards a UT99 and a UT2k4 server, maybe even a Q3 server (these things aren't exactly that intensive :b)
-
It's not often I come in here and maybe I'll start doing so as we go along...
But if you guys do UT99, I''m never leaving this part... ever. :derp: Because I love that game but never had the chance to do online multi-player. So the thought of doing it with you guys brings a smile to my face. XD
-
In favour of UT2K4, personally, along with one or two of the following: Q3, Wolfenstein ET, Cube 2, UT99, or a Q3-based total conversion (such as Urban Terror). We need some old-school FPS games here to show the slower modern shooters who's boss (and no, Bulletstorm doesn't count as a flashback to this era).
-
Yeah id play UT seeing as runescape/maplestory are out of the question :V
-
Diablo 1 :) We could play ironman.
-
Diablo 1 :) We could play ironman.
Umm, there's already a Bnetd server. Just follow the instructions to add it as a gateway and make a thread to organize games.
-
That's Diablo 2 though. BNetEditor 2 only shows: Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Starcraft, and CounterStrike. I was asking for Diablo 1, unless there is a server which I am not aware of.
-
It's the same thing. PVPGN supports all gen 1 battle.net games, Starcraft, Warcraft 2/3 and Diablo 1/2. You just need to figure out how to add it to the gateway list. Just look for instructions on how to do so.
-
I would suggest PSO Blue Burst but I don't think very many people other than myself would be interested and I am unsure what the most complete server runs on.
-
My god DrRawr you jerk. RuneScape is terrible and this is coming from a person who is both a mod in the game and has maxed out in it :V I played to trololol kids. But argh that game just attracts drama llamas worse than anywhere and their e-dating issues for me.
-
You know how we say anything Rawr would do is banned? Yeah...

I see the reasoning behind that wise law Pescar.
Except I want a law allowing us to duct tape him away from the damn keyboard now.

Q3!
I want to change my game a bit. I'm fed up with CoD4. (well, part of it) Huzzah pixel rail!
Shiiiiit. Wait, does anyone know how to make Q3 NOT crash in Win7? It always crashes for me.
-
UT99/UT2K4 will be up this weekend.

Try using the ioquake3 source port instead. Works better for me and gets updated still unlike the official id binaries.

Nice! Hopefully Q3 (ioQ3 while at that) is next.

Now that I'm unemployed I am slowly uploading all the necessary server files and stuff to get it in place. Probably later this week.
-
It doesn't crash, like, at all, EP? HOLY CRAP OMG WHERE DO I GET IT?
-

OK it took me a while to get where you were coming from.
IOQ3 is here (http://ioquake3.org/). Just copy your Q3 files over to the right directory and it'll go smoothly from there (or if you have the Steam version, it'll do it automatically).
It runs a hell of a lot better than the official binaries for me.

I doubt this is a viable option since the game is probably pretty high tech to host for a free server, and I'm not sure how one even obtains the ability to host it anyway but...
http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,9521.0.html
Basically, I'm sure it's not an option since it's a relatively higher tech game to host I'm sure.
Forum interest for it seemed pretty high back when it was new, but the game devs implemented a fuck-stupid rule that pretty much killed everyone's desire to play it. If our own server was hosted, that rule would have to be cut, or else interest would still be nil. But I reckon that's easy enough for a server admin or something. I'd be willing to try and figure out how to fix that myself if every other condition was met.
Again, I realize this probably has a snowballs chance in hell, so don't think it's a dumb suggestion, just a "why not" one >=P.
-
1) There's no server for it, nor will there ever be.
2) RO is the only MMO (maybe UO) I would ever consider hosting. Hosting MMOs is a incredibly grey legal area and some of the more "zealous" devs have sent takedown notices and litigation for hosting servers (Maplestory anyone?)
Plus MMOs don't really make sense to host for a community like MotK. Most of these games require massive numbers of people to be fully functional and self sustaining and outside of a few sandboxy type games you're never going to get enough people to make it work well. And a lot of these games are free to play anyways so why bother?
-
TSO, is it possible for me to obtain FTP and admin control of the UT server. I want to introduce BunnyTrack to the people on the server.
-
If it were up :b
But yes I can give out shell access and stuff for people if I think they're trustworthy :V

Yeah, I didn't think it very likely at all, didn't hurt to ask though. Though hearing the answer was traumatizing! *wails* >=p

Can we get Terraria :D
-
TERRARIA SERVER RIGHT?
-
If I didn't answer the first time I don't think spamming it 2 weeks later will help :b
Terraria is Windows-only (server included). See my first post where I say it has to have a LINUX dedicated server application.
-
YEAH, WINDOWS SUCKS, LINUX BANZAI.
Terraria Booooooo.
Unreal Tournament Yeaaaaaaah!
On a serious note: Have you already finished moving and got the time to setup that UT server or not TSO?
-
I'll take care of it eventually, this weekend's kind of bad since it's the 4th of July but Saturday I should be free enough to do it.

Oh right 4th of July, independence day. inb4movieIndependanceDayisshownonTV.
I'll be watching warmly girls preparing servers.

Not the ID4 movie? I thought that was a worldwide tradition. FOR SHAME, HELEPOLIS

Now that TF2 is free, should we consider re-opening the TF2 server?
-
The problem was never interest (or that it cost money), the problem with TF2 is there's tons of servers for TF2. There'd be nothing gained by us hosting one. I would much rather host a server that few people would use but that few alternatives exist rather than a server everyone would use that there's tons of (and I mean there's TONS of TF2 servers).
Lemme get UT/UT2k4 up first to gauge interest in FPS servers. If those go well what we could do is have a rotating FPS night and have a different game each night to keep things fresh.
-
I think playing other D2 clones that people are less familiar with would be fun. Titan's Quest or Hellgate London, for example. But people's computers can't handle them. ._.

Hellgate London does not really need much
Windows XP oder Windows Vista
CPU: 1.8 GHz (XP) / 2.4 GHz (Vista)
Arbeitsspeicher: 1 GB (XP) / 2 GB (Vista)
Festplatte: 6.0 GB freier Speicher
Grafikkarte: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 oder vergleichbar
It was running on my 6 Years old Desktop just fine on maximum graphics :V

What, German specs. This is clearly out of my reach.

we can do it the other way around.
Pesco, post your specs, since you are the LCD (lowest common denominator)
Then we look for a game your PC can handle :V

64MB split off for onboard VGA
About 10gigs free space right after a major cleanup. Average free space at any given time is only about 2 gigs.
-
That's not so bad. The performance bottleneck's probably the hard disk speed and the lack of RAM.
Regardless, Hellgate London can go DIAF. I wasted so much time on that game before I realized how much it sucks D:

Can you try running Speccy (http://www.piriform.com/speccy) for the specs instead? They go in more detail, and can easily be posted online.
No comment on Hellgate London. Never played it, likely won't.
-
I hope the Hellgate Global/Tokyo projects end up well.
Anyways we might consider Titan Quest? Pesco's still sad in that regard, though.

Oh god :( that free space is not so good, but hey, your PC is slightly betten then my good old IBM T43 (Thanks to my old boss that gave it to me after I finished my apprenticeship) ^^
And I have to use it when I'm going to study :derp:
Pentium M 750 1.86GHz
533MHz DDR2 13?? MB RAM (don't ask me why :V, I found an extra RAM slot so I upgraded my notebook with it ^^)
64MB ATI Mobility RADEON x300
80GB Harddisk
Have to install Hellgate London on it (after I reinstalled XP) and try it out, if it's running you are clear to go, you just have to make some space.
(Small trick, go "Start -> Run -> services.msc" Enter, search for the "Automatic Updates"-Service and "Stop" it. Then browse to %windir% (C:\Windows\), delete all $NtUninstallKBxxxxxxxx$ folders and the "SoftwareDistribution" folder, this deletes all remaining Updates Installation Files that are no longer needed)
