Title: Ask a Staffer Ep.1 - Momiji
Post by: Momiji on February 16, 2011, 07:13:02 AM
Hi!  Your resident nerd wolf tengu here.  By the powers of a dark, dangerous, and highly classified source of randomness, I've been picked to start the first of the Ask a Staffer sessions.  So go ahead and ask me any questions, and I'll do my best to answer them.

Momiji kyuu-ando-ei, sutaato!

What's your favourite food as Momiji and as yourself?
I enjoy a bunch of different kinds of food, so I really don't have one specific thing I like the most.  Although I do like noodles and noodle soups (like real ramen soup).

What are the circumstances and history behind the foundation and current incarnation of this site? What are some of the major incidents that have shaped the direction of the board and led to the way it is today?

Also, what do you think of Aya?

What types of games do you most enjoy playing?
Hard to really say, since I really don't play too many games now.  'Though historically I've played either old-school side scrollers (like from the 8/16-bit eras) or MMOs.  In a former life I was a big Sonic/Sega fan, so I like platformers like that.  I think I was more interested in disassembling my consoles than actually playing on them.

What the fuck is up with your sig.
C.< >.Ɔ

Would you main Momiji in DotS (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Defence_of_The_Shrines/Characters)? If not, who would you play and why?
Most probably, yeah.  Except I've never played WCIII at all, so I'd probably be pretty bad  Pretty sad seeing how much I played WoW (and I did play WCII a little bit back in the day).

What are the circumstances and history behind the foundation and current incarnation of this site? What are some of the major incidents that have shaped the direction of the board and led to the way it is today?

Also, what do you think of Aya?
I wasn't around MoTK until late 2009, so I wasn't privy to the earlier years of the site.  But since I did join, I experienced the forum reinstallation early 2010 (and the threads right before that), the April Fool's Revolt, the Snowball Challenges, the rise of the Idiot Hierarchy, and every little thing in between.  Everything that's gone on since I first joined shows how close-knit we are, while disconnected in certain ways at the same time.  It feels like getting used to a new relationship, so personally it's all good to me.

As for Aya, well...  she definitely keeps life interesting.  Which is okay I suppose, just as long as she isn't harassing me.  ^.^

[Edit]  Actually, I think I first came here early 2009, late 2008.  And the forum reinstallation was in 2009.  Geez my timing is screwy.  =/

What do you think is a good way of integrating yourself in this forums community? How to get to know others better, stop lurking etc. whatever.
On that note: How did you end up where you are in this community?

What got you into Touhou?
A long-time friend of mine first mentioned it to me years ago, not sure exactly when.  Awhile after that, maybe a year or so later, another friend linked me to IOSYS's infamous Overdrive, and the rest is history.

What do you think is a good way of integrating yourself in this forums community? How to get to know others better, stop lurking etc. whatever.
On that note: How did you end up where you are in this community?
Stay low-key, learn the ways and means of the community, and slowly work your way into it.  I was pretty low-key for a good while until I joined IRC, was spontaneously invited to some podcast early last year (or was it late 2009?), joined up with some people on Skype after that, and that was it.  My integration kinda happened on it's own, and partially by chance.  Over the last year I think chatting on Skype/IRC/etc. really helped me to open up; outside of that sort've thing, just time.

I think I found MoTK via Walfas, if I remember right.

Did you ate my homework?
I burnt it.  X]  You were going to fail anyway.

What's up with Reimu in your avatar then?  What podcast is this and can I watch it anywhere?
Reimu?  Open the link and watch the video, ahahaa. As for the podcast, I think it was called "This is not an anime podcast."  Letty started it.  I'm not sure where it is though.

What got you into cosplay and what keeps you into it?
I've always been interested in costumes, starting back when I was little, making weird costumes for Halloween.  I was thinking of cosplaying at Otakon for a good while, but Touhou really got me into it.

I'm interested in knowing how (and when) you got into being all moemoe and nyuuing like you tend to do?
I blame it on being a furry in a past life.  I just kinda start doing it.

How does a wolf become a janitor?
I chewed on TSO's ears until she finally gave up and promoted me.  X]

Would you hug me?
Yush.  ^.^

Maple syrup?

y/n
The answer is always YES.

Momi, did you like LEGOs as a child (or still do)?

What are the most important books you've ever read in shaping your world view?
I loved LEGOs when I was little, I had a huge recycling bin filled with them.  I even had the watertight boat hulls, so I'd play a lot in the bathtub, eheheee.

Books?  Hmmm, I guess I don't read as much as I really should.  1984 was good in that aspect though.

Why did you go with the username "Momiji"?
I didn't think I'd ever take on a "wolf" persona, but I had problems with my previous online alias (stalkers), and somehow I was naturally attracted to Momiji.  So I decided to use it as my new alias.

Anyways serious question to Momiji.  I know you're a nerd, what's the nerdiest thing (in your opinion) you're into?
Probably aviation and naval/military equipment.  Airplanes and submarines.   :]

What kind of music do you like to like to listen to?
I like a wide range of genres, from classical to classic through modern (up to the '90s) rock.  Pretty much anything that isn't country or rap, or Nickelback.

Not serious question: What is the most disgusting thing you've ever eaten?

Serious question: Having grown up in Baltimore, how do you think the city has changed for the better, and how has it declined?
I'm a very picky eater, so it's neigh impossible to get me to eat weird stuff.  But I think the most disgusting thing I was ever forced to eat was a devilled egg.  I hate eggs, mayonnaise, and mustard, so they're truly an evil food as far as I'm concerned.

Also, I didn't actually grow up here, I've been here since early 2000.  I originally grew up in the midwest, born in Minnesota, later on moving to Wisconsin for awhile, then to Colorado for about 3 years.  Minnesota was weird, being in a small city and not really being able to see the big city (Minneapolis/St. Paul) that much.  Wisconsin just plain sucked.  Colorado was nice though.  I loved being in the mountains.

Do you read manga / watch anime?

If so, what are your favourites?
I've read very very few manga, I think the first one I actually read was Ghost in the Shell.  As for anime, I could say I'm not _that_ big into it, but I did enjoy Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, One Piece, Slayers, Cowboy Bebop, and uhm... those are probably my favorites of what I've watched.

What's the creepiest con experience you've ever had?
That was probably during the JAM Project concert, I sat next to someone who had some mental issues.  Not that that was a bad thing, but the loud music was getting very irritating and disorienting for him.

How much do you confide in your family?
Very little, if anything at all.

Honestly, I don't even think they're a band.  They are the nexus of the entire universe's capacity for epicness.  You can't listen to their music without getting the uncontrollable urge to go outside and beat up a car or something
since robots/mecha don't quite exist yet.

Joke question: What's your favorite cereal?

Hmmmm, I don't eat a lot of cereal.  I like Malt-o-Meal though.

I haven't promoted MoTK, but I did plaster my Gendou-Momiface around Pooshlmer, et. al., promoting the new Touhou Wiki.

Currently, I'm a computer tech.

Momi-G, what will you be looking forward to seeing the most in Chicago? :D

Definitely bad.  MoTK (and Touhou, by extension) was my anti-WoW.  I'm glad to have joined.  =]

:(

May I ask why?
Long long long long LONG term family issues/drama.  I'll discuss it in private if you want.

Yeah, East Coast, as I thought. Have you been outside of the US too, though?
Yep.  I've been to Mexico several times, Belize, around the Caribbean, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Bahrain (in the Persian Gulf), and Egypt.

How are you doing in school or your real life job? Is it better than the forum, more worse than the forum, equally good as the forum, or is it going at a wave.
I had issues with school, and got burnt out badly, but I'll probably go back at some point.  My job is okay, and I guess I'm fortunate enough to have one right now.  The forum is more of a hobby and a nice place to hang out with friends than anything else.

Uber serious question (really it is): If you could move a little closer to DC for about $500 a month, would you?
I've been thinking of moving down there, except my current job is up here, and I currently live rent-free.

Mima and I were here before anyone else.  =<

If you lived a bit more north I'd be glad to.  <3

Very tasty~

Why, "Terezi Pyrope?"
She's my favorite of the Trolls, even though I'm an Aries (aligned with Aradia, who's also cool).

doesn't he live like 30 minutes away from National harbor?

and Momiji if you were there what would you do the day before the con?
We got set up in the rooms, waited for everyone to show up (traffic was kinda weird), got our badges, roamed around a bit, screwed around a bit, Sammykun and Jerry/Silentsword doing last minute costume fixes (the room reeks of epoxy atm), just chilling out before the big day tomorrow.

I'd say 30 minutes in the middle of the night, closer to 45 during the day (not rush hour).

Why would a wolf use linux? :V
I <3 Linux ^.^  Why not?

Do you like to cook, and if so, what's your favorite dish to make?
I cook a lot of pasta with marinara.  It's old and boring.  I just don't like cooking a lot for myself.  =/

how long have this forum been alive?
and who started this forum?
Several years now, not real sure exactly, and I don't really know who it was that started the forums originally (then abandoned it and TSO took it over).

I have to ask this one:
How many Touhou H-doujin do you have in your possession? (DLed, hardcopy, whichever)

How much of an otaku do you see yourself as?  If a friend recommended a random anime to you, would you watch it no questions asked? What is your opinion on ecchi animes? Where in the shit is my burrito, Senior Momiji?

I don't particularly care for it, but I don't care if other people have it either.  Whatever floats your boat I guess, it just doesn't really interest me.

As for otaku stuff, I'm not that big of a weeaboo.  I don't really watch anime much anymore (probably a bit of burnout after watching all of One Piece, ugh).  For manga, see my previous response above.  As for Japanese itself, I did study it for about a year in college, but I'm generally interested in languages anyway.

As for your burrito, I uh...   I ate it.  Sorry, I was really hungry.  =[  It was good though.  I'll make you another if you want.

I don't have any.

Katchura originally had ownership of both IRC and the forums (unknown who actually started the IRC chan other than Katchura was the one who actually regged it).  Hosting of the forums was in 7hs's hands until the SMF2 reset, I hosted the IRC server until then.  Now Suzuran hosts the IRC server and I for the most part manage the forum/game server.  What prompted the IRC move to Suzuran was an attempt to separate the IRC server from the web server.  We had a security breach on the IRC server via an unrelated webserver app, and we decided divorcing the two was the best option, so Suzuran volunteered to run the IRCd on his personal server.  I still handle the political/moderation aspects of the IRC server but actual maintenance of the software is Suzuran's realm now.

Noone actually "owns" the forum/game server at the moment other than Edible paid the bill last time.  We're trying to structure things so that we can rely mostly if not totally on donations.

If you had to pick a certain user here who is just awesome in so many ways, who would it be?
Do you prefer hot or cold showers?
Bacon or cupcakes, which is better?

Long term goals, I do have some, yeah.  Still working on some short-term ones before I start looking farther into the future.
As for webcomics, I've been reading Homestuck as of late, it's pretty nice (and updated a LOT holy crap).  Cartoons, my all-time favorite is probably Slayers.  Comics, I'm not really into them enough to have a favorite.  And about the same about movies, though somehow I've been seeing older movies a lot more recently.

I don't really have any specific favorite remixes, really.  I usually end up getting a batch of remixes and listening to them until I get tired of them.  I do like Green Eyed Jealousy in general though.

Everyone here is awesome.  Although some people go a bit beyond awesome, like Purvis and MJP.

Hot showers are wonderful~

Also, definitely cupcakes.  Although I don't eat bacon, Epic Meal Time definitely made bacon pretty epic.

What is your favourite flower (if any)?
I don't have any favorites, they're all pretty nice.  I should probably say suzuran, else Medicine may have a problem.  ^.^

Joke Question: Do you like waffles?
Semi-joke Question: Do you like pancakes?
Semi-serious Question: Do you like french toast?
Serious Question: Are you able to wait for a mouthful?

I really like Ran, 'though I don't particular want someone to be a perfect waifu, but a good person to be with.

All my friends are pretty much already into Touhou, ahahaaa. ^.^

I'm a master procrastinator, you know this better than anyone.  X]

Actually, really, I need to get more creative and avoid being idea-destroyingly
(english how does it work?)
dismissive to stuff.

I don't particularly care for having a "perfect job," just something I can do that will keep me afloat, isn't mind-numbingly dull, will let me use my brain. and will help fund my hobbies.  As for school, I really like learning but I really can't do school anymore (long long long history of school drama T-T).  It's frustrating but I wish I could go again.
