Title: I want to discuss drawing apps
Post by: Stifled Voices on February 10, 2014, 10:17:13 PM
...But where on the forums do I go to discuss this? (I.E. The best drawing apps there could possibly be)

either SAI or Clip Studio Paint is probably your best bet, depending on how beefy your computer is

So, discuss them here? Sure, why not!

...No, what I mean is what are the best drawing apps for the iPad (I'm an upstart, and I believe going digital is my (best) ticket to Danbooru, Pixiv and beyond) in your opinion? Computer apps won't offer me good precision with a clunky mouse.

actually you should probably talk drawing apps in Alice's Art Atelier (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/board,25.0.html)

that said, if you're just starting out, you may as well learn on traditional media--getting recognized requires strong fundamentals, a good sense for anatomy and perspective and value and color theory, and fancy toys alone won't help you learn all that stuff

Wait isn't there Tayasui Sketch? Also, bamboo styluses suck.

Get something else that's not a Bamboo then? :V

Like say a Monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartments.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10821&cs_id=1084911&pn=computer_accessories), those are well regarded on top of being cheap. I'd have 3 if they didn't want my anal dignity in shipping fees to my place

The only thing I can recommend for the iPad is Sketchbook mobile (?) since its the only thing I've really tried

hmmm... Maybe efame, but I'm not gunning for number 1. Just a little bit of recognition. I can run my career in esilence if it goes that way, but a comment on Danbooru would be nice.

Is drawing something you're just starting?

Yeah, I'm an upstart (if you mean serious drawing). I've already got some of the basics of drawing, but I know I'd have to adjust quite a bit if I go digital.

P.S. I have been doodling and making fast sketches for a while, but I know that I have to pick up proper techniques to do an actual full-on drawing.

I'm a Sketchbook Pro user, personally. However, I'd still recommend traditional materials in order to better grasp fundamentals.

Digital/analogue technique differences do exist (particularly if using separate graphics tablets whilst looking at monitor or screen), but of course basics are by far more important.

As for consumption tablets...ugh, the lack of proper stylus support - as in, those with proper pen tips and not the rubber dome madness - makes me wary of using these for actual drawing (contrary to what some apps like Paper may suggest). Best bet if you *had* to use those would probably be Sketchbook Pro on iOS/Android. Not sure how it fares compared to the standard PC version however.

Also, bamboo styluses suck.
They're all rubber tips these days, aren't they? If so that explains it. :P

Lastly....

Yeah, bamboo styluses for the iPad are the worst imo. My teacher gave me one to try out some time ago and I just ended up returning to using my finger to draw. People have mixed feelings about them so idk.

But yeah, start out with a sketchbook and pencil and grasp fundies. Also, show some of the work you've done too so we also have a sense of where you're at to help you better.

Hey, I'm not trying to be the Most Popular Man in The World (There's already one but there's no time to explain that)! I even said I could do my career in esilence!

Also, what about specialized drawing tablets like Cintiq?

Yeeeeeah Monoprice!
I've also heard good things about Turcom tablets.

Also, show some of the work you've done too so we also have a sense of where you're at to help you better.
My thoughts as well. Especially if you're considering investing in an expensive higher-end tablet like Cintiq.

If you want to spend an arm, leg, and kidney for one...those are meant for professionals already well-experienced in the field and making the money to afford them.

As for tablet systems with proper stylus support (eg. ThinkPad X Tablet series, Surface Pro line, even Galaxy Note), those are great too and offer a simpler traditional->digital transition for some. But unless you already have such a device I would not go out of my way to get one.

...Hold on, have best cheap drawing tablets been discussed here before? What are some threads I can find?

It's not really worth reading through another thread here. Look up reviews for Monoprice tablets and get one that's not too tiny.

Everything bar the top Cintiqs don't show enough colours.

Iirc that's Win 8 and the forum code just borks and doesn't detect it properly yet :V

Everything bar the top Cintiqs don't show enough colours.
The Cintiqs don't really have top-notch screens actually. Any non-old Samsung tablet will have a better image than them.
Worst problem here to draw is input accuracy which the Cintiqs will definitely do better than any tablet computer out there of course. But then again, it makes no sense to buy a Cintiq(or Wacom for that matter) if you're just starting out or drawing as an occasional hobby. Unless you're loaded I mean, rich people can do whatever the fuck they want :derp:

While I consider the sub-US$100 Intuos Pen a decent option for a starter too, Monoprice does a great job for most as well for less.

e- Also upgrade your OS! :V
Unless on a touchscreen/tablet system, in which case Win7 feels clunky.

I think, on the app end, the biggest thing would be multiple layers, so I can refine my drawings without accidentally screwing the other layers (erasing rough lines but not the final drawing).

Sketchbook pro for iPad has layers too. How much layers it allows you to have I forget.
(an iPad is the tablet you have right?)

If you're considering a tablet then:
As for tablet systems with proper stylus support (eg. ThinkPad X Tablet series, Surface Pro line, even Galaxy Note), those are great too and offer a simpler traditional->digital transition for some.

Having a tablet that supports pen pressure is way better imo.

Pretty much anything not MSPaint has layers these days, so you won't have a problem there.

If you're looking for something free, MyPaint is decent, but from experience has poor compatibility with Monoprice tablets, which you may end up getting. Someone else can confirm this, it's been a while.

SAI seems to be the standard for a lot of people. It's some $50-60, which is a pretty good price compared to some other software.

just throw 2 dollars for sketchbook pro and then give up when you realise its better to draw on paper before anything else

Both the ThinkPad X Series tablets and Surface Pros have stylus pressure sensitivity - not exactly Cintiq or high-end Intuos level, but plenty enough for most tasks

Most consumption tablets have pressure sensitivity as well, but it's the precision of the stylus tip over a finger or rubber-dome that really makes them shine.

Indeed. These were drawn on a Thinkpad X201--
