Taint Letty.

Also: It's poetic and symbolic.

I... /think/ I have it, if we're allowed multiple shots per riddle.

Nue?

Nein.

Long shot, but Kana?

Ding!

I... /think/ I have it, if we're allowed multiple shots per riddle.

I would think multiple shots are alright, as long as you don't make multiple guesses per post.

Yay!

Guess I have to come up with something of my own now, eh?
Well, here goes nothing:

"For years, beyond the view of its enemies,
dutifully bearing the weight of Gensokyo's defense."

Shingyoku?
Life and death are without purpose.  Our attempts to give them one are quite presumptuous of us.  But in the end, we exist, and that is enough.

Current status: Dissuading deliberately choking for imagined fame.

Shingyoku?

Bonus points for obscurity, but I'm afraid not.

Gonna go out on a limb and guess the Great Hakurei Barrier.

Now that's thinking outside the box! ^^;
I have to admit that it matches the clue pretty well, but I'll go as far as to say that the intended answer is at least animate, and would not spark any debates about whether or not it was a character.

The Dragon God.

Thematically fitting, but also no.

Bah, I was going to guess the Dragon or Barrier, too.

Maribel probably relies on too much speculation.

... Suika?
There was something here once. Wonder what...

Nope.

Is it Eirin?

Nope.

Genjii

Correct!
The weight he was bearing was quite literal, and not figurative.
And, well, it's been quite a few years since he saw action.

Tempted to do something very bad. But I shall save it.

Light in the darkness;
The final toll, an ending.
Ullr's breath retreats.

Yeah bitches, have a kenning in a haiku.

What.

Yeah, I have absolutely no idea. The part about Ullr is even more puzzling, even after I looked it up to see what the heck it meant. I can't really describe the thought process that I went through to get this answer, but my answer is:

Byakuren.
