Title: The Complex of Horrors! (RP Thread)
Post by: Hello Purvis on July 21, 2009, 11:45:41 AM
It is a lovely day in Alpha Complex. The overhead lights shed a constant 22.5 lumens per watt, the bots are chirping, and InfraRed citizens bustle along to and from work on their properly mandated schedules. The VidShows bring everyone the latest news ("Have mutants infected your toothpaste?") and products ("Buy AlphaStrong Bouncy Bubble Beverage Today! It's the only beverage that prevents treasonous thoughts! Are you eager to keep having treasonous thoughts?"). The occasional Vulture roars past overhead, no doubt out to dispense some indiscriminate justice to some misguided traitors. Everyone just tries to stay out of the way of the Warbots that periodically make their way through the crowds.

Video cameras in the walls, the ceilings, and especially the bathrooms quietly convey knowledge of the citizenry's every movement and action, helping IntSec guard them from themselves. Well, except for the places where the cameras are broken. Where are those places? What is your clearance level, Citizen? And watching all is The Computer, making certain that every little thing goes just right.

But as the Vultures and warbots suggest, all is not well in Alpha Complex. Somewhere out there, mutants and traitors are plotting and scheming their schemes, hoping to bring down Friend Compute and the whole of humanity. And for a few individuals, they find proof of this when they receive a message from their Personal Data Devices:

Quote
You are scheduled to appear at 1000 hours at briefing room 423 in Central Processing Building UN-0W3N for a mission briefing.
-Friend Computer
Thought of the Day: Exemplary is the mind too small for treason.

A mission briefing! The Computer has a task for its loyal troubleshooters!

****

It is now 0950 hours, 3 hours after the summons to briefing was issued. The door to Briefing Room 423 slides open to admit any troubleshooters who have arrived early. The room itself is fairly spacious, with enough capacity to seat 50 people and a lectern at the front of the room. A lone scrub bot is trying to clean the room, but seems to have gotten itself stuck in a corner; slamming into it every couple of seconds. A closed door can be seen at the far end of the room.

(OOC: Once you've read the PMs I've sent you, please intro your character as you will. Do things, mingle, whatever you like. And good luck, and I hope you have fun. =])

"Loyal Hygiene Officer, I commend your effort to keep this corner of the room free of untidiness and potential infectious dirt."

Abot-R-FCP1 has arrived early for the meeting. He tries to make small talk with the scrub bot while oblivious to the presence of other troubleshooters.

"Hmm..."

Walking into the room at a brisk pace, looking left and right, RED-clearance Troubleshooter Marrow-R-BAP-1 took up a position surveying the room -- with her back to a corner of the wall -- but not before shutting the door behind her as quietly as she could.

'I wonder what The Computer will have us doing . . . '

(OOC: NOTE: For the unaware, I may occasionally share some of Marrow's thoughts with the role-players -- for after all, why hide what's not treasonous -- so as a person can get a better idea of her mood at the time. Of course, unless the other character is emphatic or otherwise able to sense someone's thoughts, such thoughts merely reflect upon her appearance towards the other characters. For future reference, words spoken aloud will be "in quotes like this", while words thought in Marrow's mind will be 'inbetween apostrophes like so'. That is all, friends.)

The scrub bot emits a series of beeps varying in tone. Then small hatch on the side slides open. A little metal hand extends with an whirring noise, and gives an OK sign to Abot. Then it retracts the arm and returns to its prior business.

"Good morning, fellow Troubleshooters!"

Satsuki-R-INN-01 walks into the room with a bright, cheerful grin on her face.  "Let us thank The Computer for such a glorious daycycle!"

She then briskly takes a seat and smiles happily at anyone who makes even the slightest bit of eye contact with her.

"Oh hey, there's already a lot of other people here already."

Zengar-R-SRG-1 walks into the room, eyes closed, ready to... spend the time left for the briefing remembering the last mission he had. Mind you, he often thinks aloud.

"Man, seeing those silly newbs getting blasted by experimental weaponry was sure funny!" He then laughs to himself.

"hello other trouble shooters, Peter-R-WQR-1 reporting to serve the computer"

he then went to talk to the others, occasionally counting things to pass time

Enters rooms. Scratching his massive mustache.

"Four-zwo-sree... Four-zwo-sree... Ah, found it."
Looks around.
"Ah, you must be ze oder Troublezooters. I'm Nietz-R-PHD-1 and... hey what iz ze problem wit ze little bot?"

Goes over to the corner to inspect the scrub bot.

The bot continues to collide with the corner every couple of seconds as Neitz-R-PHD-1 hovers over it and inspects it. It must really have scrubbed that part of the room good by now!

"Made it in the nick of time!"

Rou-R-KAN-1 practically jumps through the doorway, panting while he silently congratulates himself for making the meeting.

"Apologies, fellow Troubleshooters, but my alarm clock was sabotaged by Communist scum trying to end our mission before it began. Thank the Computer that I managed to arrive anyway, otherwise I'd have hit the first Bad End of the game!"

He laughs nervously, noticing everyone else gathering around the Scrubbot.

"Uh...maybe someone should turn it around? Not sure what sort of flag it'd trip, but I'm not sure how it could be a bad thing..."

(Yeah, just posting here so I have something to say before the mission starts properly. Still not gonna have a decent connection until later tomorrow. Sorry again!)

Another figure sidles into the room behind the diving Rou-R-KAN-1 (though of course he does not know the name) with a decidedly less...obvious entry though no less enthusiastic.  Enthusiasm is, after all, mandatory.

"Good morning, Troubleshooters.  Good evening?  I'm not sure.  Hopefully I'm on time.  But if we can't begin to take time, how can we ever begin to make time?"

Jamie-R-SWH-1 pauses for a second before continuing, "Well, I imagine that those questions could lead to some pretty treasonous thoughts so let's not pursue that line of thinking.  All happy today, I hope?"

He gives a wan smile.

With mandatory enthusaism, Marrow-R-BAP-1 was giving a smile to her fellows . . . even if it was strained and her spine felt like it had moved up an inch with the advent of Rou-R-KAN-1's Dynamic Entry.

'What a colorful cast we have here . . . that loud one's most likely Zengar-R-SRG-1, better keep an eye on him . . . and I am seriously going to have to watch my back with that one who rushed through the door . . . already got me once . . . '

"Hello, everybody . . . my name's Marrow-R-BAP-1," she said as she tried to look as if she were not as shellshocked as she truly was. And mentally prayed to Friend Computer that she was succeeding.

After careful inspection, I grab the scrub bot and turn it around.

"Done. Zat should temporrarily increase ze room cleaning efficienzy by 200%"

Then I absent-mindedly start to read my latest copy of "Bots Today-cycle"

The bot, freed from the corner, resumes methodically rolling over the room and applying its hygienic treatments with laudable diligence. It beeps a satisfied sounding tune as it works.
Title: Re: The Complex of Horrors! (RP Thread)
Post by: FinnKaenbyou on July 23, 2009, 07:01:19 PM
Rou-R-KAN-1 takes a deep breath and smiles at the sight of the bot merrily strolling down the room.

"That's better. Odds are that now that we've tripped the Robot_Rotation flag when we need help the most in our mission this scrub bot will burst into the fray and save us...or someone will slip on the wet floor and break their neck for an instant Bad End. One or the other, really."

He pulls out a notebook and begins to scribble down the names of some non-existent variables, mentally working his way through all the ways this little decision could expand into life-or-death. This was normally the point when most people took a nervous step away from him, but that had been back when he was of Infrared clearance. Perhaps Troubleshooters would be somewhat more accepting of his little quirks...

"Heh, those silly malfunctioning bots always crack me up. At least they don't know when to stop doing their jobs."
Zengar-R-SRG-1 keeps laughing to himself.
"Maybe one day, those Troubleshooters will find out a way for the scrub bots to not crash into the first wall they meet. That day would be the cleanest day ever."

"Wouldn't that be considered treasonous for tampering with the Computer's equipment?" Jamie-R-SWH-1 wonders aloud.

As the other Troubleshooters crowd around the scrub bot at the fore, a lone figure enters in from the back, wearing a gas mask which covers the face, but leaves the bright red hair of the owner visible. It is an interesting sight coupled with the Red uniform of the Troubleshooter.
Saying nothing, the figure quickly takes a seat in the back.
A nametag with Ginger-R-UYT-1, CPU: Eye in the Skypanel, RED clearance serves as identification.

Whilst the troubleshooters meet and greet each other, or play with the bot, time has passed. It is now 1010 hours, and there is no sign of any kind of briefing. Where could the briefing agent be? Perhaps he's in the bathroom? Perhaps he got unavoidably by pre-briefing forms? Perhaps he has been terminated?

Then, finally, the door slides open. The wave of anticipating this builds up quickly dies as a bored-looking Infrared citizen in his black overalls steps out. Paying no mind to any of the gathered troubleshooters, he approaches the lectern, places a piece of paper on it, and walks out back out through the door. As it closes, the room is left silent once again.

Rou finishes scribbling down his list of conspiracy theories as to how the scrub bot could potentially kill him, looking up at the lectern.

"Hmm..."

He ponders the decision for a few brief moments, making another note as he approaches.

Recite_Instructions = 1

Standing behind the lectern, Rou looks down at the piece of paper, tapping it lightly with his knuckles to get the attention of the room before beginning to read out the instructions...

Rou-R-KAN-1 finds there as a number of team position badges resting on the lectern. He reads the paper aloud.

Quote
                               K413
Go to R&D Department I4MP and show them this note to receive your gear.
After that, go to Depot 4DV at 1400 hours and board Flybot YYM.
                        Hanger 4FH

The Mission Assignments are as follows:

Team Leader: Zengar-R-SRG-1
Loyalty Officers: Abot-R-FCP-1, Hunter-R-BCW-1, Marrow-R-BAP-1, Ginger-R-UYT-1
Hygiene Officer: Rou-R-KAN-1
Communications and Recording Officer: Jamie-R-SWH-1
Equipment Guy: Nietz-R-PHD-1
Happiness Officer: Peter-R-WQR-1
Alertness Officer: Satsuki-R-INN-1

-Yu-U-KOH-3

The note seems to be handwritten, though with several corrections, and bears an official seal of a High Programmer. With four hours to spare, it shouldn't be difficult for you to get to R&D and to the Hanger with enough time left over for an extracurricular activity! There should be enough time to visit the supply Depot to requisition some more goods, if things are brisk, or go to the InfraRed Market and see what's available (all in the name of duty, of course!). Some might even want to consider meeting with...uh...special friends...who offer...special advice.

Post by: FinnKaenbyou on July 24, 2009, 11:46:13 PM
Finishing the recital, Rou-R-Kan-1 looks at the paper blankly.

"Wow, more open-ended than I expected. This is going to be a nightmare to keep track of, I can feel it. Guess we may as well head over to R&D and get hold of our things, though. Otherwise we'll knock the flags out of order and it'll all go downhill from there..."

He walks out of the room, clutching the note in his hand as he starts his trip down the long, red corridors down to R&D. He doesn't bother to look back, expecting his fellow Troubleshooters to follow ASAP.

"Hmm, there seems to be a lot more loyalty officers than last time. Hopefully that means that treason is less likely. On the other hand, I get to be leader, so I get dibs on melee weapons, I hope!" With a huge smile on his face, Zengar-R-SRG-1 follows the red brick road to R&D.

"Nice to see I managed to make hygiene officer..."

Rou-R-KAN-1 has already strapped his badge on his jumpsuit, adjusting its positioning until is satisfied that it isn't slanted in the slightest.

"The best part of this is that if anyone trips any of the loser flags I'll be the first guy to know about it. Unseen flags are just plain unfair, to be honest, so this is really good news. Thank the Computer for playing my strengths so beautifully!"

"Oooh oooh!  Comms officer!  I always wanted to be the eyes on the ground!  But wait...that would be a little gross if your eyes were on the ground", Jamie-R-SWH-1 laughs softly at his own brand of "wit", "well then, we've got lots to do and little time to do it in.  Lead on, oh fearless leader."

'What is he talking about 'flags', though? I ought to be a bit careful . . . '

That thought thought, Marrow-R-BAP-1 walked after those who left for the R&D Department.

(OOC: Mr_Bob and Cleaves Evil get +1 Perversity. They know why. +1 to Anthony for pleasing use of his tick.)

The group makes its way toward R&D, lacking Ginger who will no doubt catch up. The trip is more or less uneventful; just having to navigate through the crowds of Infrared Citizens, avoid a warbot zooming by, and trying not to get the attention of bored Green-Clearance IntSec goons keeping an eye on the one of the major thoroughfares and hassling citizens for not moving quickly enough.

Eventually, in spite of the non-eventfulness of the trip, you reach R&D Department K413. It is a huge, blocky building that extends to connect with the sector's ceiling. It has fewer windows than most other structures, which is to say it has almost none at all, and is sheeted in thickly reinforced PlastiTitaniumBuddy alloy. The name stenciled across the top identifies it clearly.

You enter the Red Corridor serving as its entrance, and are quickly greeted by a Red-Clearance secretary, who demands to know who you are, why you are there, and one reason that she should not turn the Kill-O-Zap Handy Defense Grid on you right this second. Showing her the note seems to satisfy her that you have a reason to be here.

Zengar-R-SRG-1 asks where the bathroom is and is directed toward it. As he splits off from the group, escorted by a Green-Clearance security guard, the rest of you are directed toward an elevator...

(Going to give you guys time to PM me any actions you have in mind, if any. Should I get none, I'll resume tomorrow. Also, Alice, PM me on introducing yourself if you've not lost interest by this point)

(I think I just figured out Anthony's trick. Wow.)

Watching the Team Leader leave, Rou-R-KAN-1 takes some more notes. He laughs to himself.

"Wow, the boss is getting hauled away by a Green? Better give him a once-over when he comes back, see if he's tripped a few flags while he was over there. Wouldn't want him to get involved in something without me knowing, right? Actually, on that note, why not we pass the time on this elevator with a nice little PHT?" (Personal Hygeine Test, for those who've already forgotten the MBD)

Rou-R-KAN-1 pulls out a can of Mr. Squeaky cleaning agent, his grin now slightly insane. He points it at random Troubleshooters in an attempt to make one of them go first.

"Come on, it's not so bad! Just...kinda like setting your skin on fire. But you get used to it and then it just tickles, I swear!"

The elevator doors slide open, revealing an immense and brightly lit bay. Stepping out, the party can see a variety of engineering marvels. Above them hang the frames of Vultures, and other aircraft that could well put that pride of Alpha Complex to shame! Over there is small, shielded, cube-like chamber made of concrete. And yonder is an immense array of chemistry equipment, sending all sorts of vari-colored liquids and gases racing through stills, centrifuges, and The Computer knows what else. Littered here and there are various bots, in practically every stage of construction but finished. And then there are the contraptions of steel and plastic that you can't even begin to put a name to; many look suspiciously gun-like. Machines whir, bots beep, electricity occasionally crackles, and at one point you hear a panicked scream. The air smells of grease, caustic chemicals, caustic cleaners, and hot metal.

Soon a second elevator car opens up, followed shortly by a third. Zengar-R-STG-1 and Ginger-R-UYT-1 emerge from them, respectively, and rejoin the group.

Also here are a number of people in Indigo-Clearance uniforms and lab coats. The walls and floor are colored indigo as well, clearly this place is normally off limits to the likes of you. But a wizened and bald Indigo researcher approaches you with a smile. "Hello there, citizens!" he says, his ID tag identifies him as Genj-I-EEE-4; "You're the troubleshooters we've been expecting! I'm sure you're excited and eager to see what all we've been cooking up today! Oh, before I forget, let's get the mundane stuff out of the way."

He hands each one of the group a small package. "There are five laser barrels for each of you in those," says Genj-I-EEE-4. "It seems like quite a lot, but Friend Computer clearly feels that is a correct allotment. Be sure to record their use carefully and return them when you're done. Now, let's get to the fun stuff, eh?"

He leads the group deeper into the R&D bay. The various experimental items, littered about haphazardly, seem to close in on you. It's difficult not to be a little nervous, who knows what these things do? A sudden explosion on the other side of the only intensifies the feeling; but Genj-I-EEE-4 merely hops over the debris that lands in front of him, muttering something about improved distance, and continues on his way before stopping in front of a stand filled with nasty-looking objects.

"Here we have the Nev-R-Break Plasma Cannon," he says, gesturing toward a bulky-looking weapon connected to an equally-bulky canister that seems to made to fit on one's back. "It's the same great flavor as a typical plasma cannon, but with an entirely new kind of containment system! We're hoping you'll give it its first field test!"

Then he picks up a small bag, and pulls out what seems to be a metal sphere, about an inch in diameter. "These, we are considering as a replacement for grenades. Watch." He tosses it toward an open spot in the bay. where it immediately explodes outward in an cone-shaped array of spikes and blades about seven feet high. "Nasty, isn't it? Gums up vehicles, eviscerates commies, throws frankenstein bots off balance, and none of that mess property damage. Keep track of how hard you throw them, we're still fine tuning the tolerance expectations."

Next, he picks up a small tube, not unlike the kind that Denham-G's Dandy Dental Detergent comes in. "I'm quite chuffed with this one!" He squeezes out a small amount of grayish material, and shapes it into a rough cube with his fingers. Then he places it on the ground and takes a flash of purple liquid from the shelf and pours a little on the cube. The gray material quivers, then suddenly swells up to nearly a yard tall! "We call it Play-Duralim, the junior citizens love it! It's not quite so good for specific pieces, but in a pinch, it'll do. Sadly, it'll only last an hour. But we'll work on it! If you could record the shapes you make successfully, that would be helpful"

The next item his picks up are a pair of bulky-looking shoes. He smiles as he say, "This should be obvious, I hope. A project long in perfecting: the rocket shoes! Just put them on your feel, tap the remote, and off you go! Do record the fuel usage."

Then he picks up a rifle. "This is a deceptive little piece, but really it's quite one of our best. The DoorMarkerPlusPlus!" He aims it at one of the walls and pulls the trigger. A long, thin beam shoots from the weapon. As it hits the wall, the light spreads outward, making a large disc-shape. Then it suddenly eats through the wall, revealing the sector outside; and a rather perilous-looking drop some ten stories down. "We've not quite calibrated it to deal with all wall thicknesses, so we'll expect some properly recorded field data with that."

Then he approaches the last item on the shelf, a curious object that looks like a coiled tube connected to a large cone. He picks up the object and slings it over his shoulder like a bandoleer, so that the cone extends some distance past his head. "I'll need a volunteer for this one. Marrow-R-BAP-1, could you stand over there?" Put on the spot like that, Marrow is unable to refuse. She goes to stand opposite of the party. "This is an interesting tool, I think," Genj-I-EEE-4 says, while fiddling with some buttons. "There is a certain irony in using it. For instance, let's say that you were facing a member of the treasonous Romantics secret society, one who had been seen just recently meeting with one Al-G-REN-4 of the same faction."

Marrow tries to draw a weapon, but the device that Genj wears suddenly emits a monstrous noise:

"YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING THAT, CITIZEN"

It takes a moment for anyone to recognize the voice of The Computer emanating from the experimental device's cone, altered in some way. Where Marrow was standing, there is only a sort of red mist treacherously settling on the floor. As well, there is quite a lot of broken glass and spilled liquid all around the R&D bay. More than a few choice words are hurled toward the group.

Genj-I-EE-4 seems to take it all in stride. "Well now! Who wants what? Let's try not to be greedy!"

(I, as relieved and shocked as I am about today's occurances, will make note of that.)

After recovering from the sudden shock of that new device, Marrow-R-BAP-1 managed to wheeze out, "Quite effective, excellent work . . . "

After gaining some more composure, she then asked, "Would it be possible for me to field-test some of those grenades? They seemed rather interesting, and even if a situation doesn't pop up that would require their use I'd be glad to swing back around to possibly launch some in a test environment for you."

"Ginger, be careful with that!"

Rou-R-KAN-1 grabs at the DoorMarkerPlusPlus, irritation running across his face.

"You didn't wash your hands before touching that! Do you have any idea what sort of flags you could trip if you're not careful!? We'll need to rely on this to save us and BOOM! It doesn't work because there are Communist germs all over it! Not that I'm accusing you personally, obviously, but Communism is always hiding where you least expect it, and where would be harder to suspect than your own self?"

Rou-R-KAN-1 turns to Zengar-R-SRG-1, a determined look on his face.

"Sir, I request that I take the DoorMarkerPlusPlus and ensure that it runs efficiently. I can tell you from my experience as a Hygiene Officer that objects like that are extremely vulnerable to sabotage by Communist germs, and I want so make absolutely sure we aren't walking straight into a bad end."

(EDIT: Yes, I'm so experienced as a Hygiene Officer that I can't spell Hygiene correctly. >_>)

Zengar-R-SRG-1 ponders his options.
"Hmm... You do seem like knowing this stuff, but on the other hand, Ginger-R-UYT-1 seems to be very interested in this particular piece of equipment. I think the most correct path is to let him handle the DoorMarkerPlusPlus, but every once in a while, you may perform cleaning duties on it, to keep it clean as much as possible."

"Sir, I have to raise an objection here. There's nothing to stop the DMPP turning unhygienic inbetween my examinations unless I'm giving it my full attention - a flag could be flipped anytime and I could be unaware of it. Though I trust Ginger-R-UYT-1 given his status as a fellow Troubleshooter, I feel valuing his personal interests above the safety of the entire team is highly dangerous, and not in line with the behaviour of a good-standing Team Leader. If I were to misinterpret the action, I'd think that you could be deliberately sabotaging the mission by allowing such a sensitive piece of equipment to fall into disrepair...but obviously, if you were to hand it over to safer hands, I'd think nothing of the sort. Just an observation, sir."

"This DMPP is a notably sensitive example here. Hygiene is the most important aspect to all things, true, but for weapons as sensitive as this the importance is greater still - it's literally an all-or-nothing deal here. I can tell just looking at this thing that the slightest hint of dirt would be enough to seep into the circuitry and send the whole thing into disarray. Sir, I speak with the best intentions and with the goal of ensuring the safety and well-being of all our Trouble-shooters. Why do you still refuse to listen to reason?"

"Oh, do not mistake my position with stubborness. I was just taking all options into account. So if the DMPP is that sensitive to dirt, then yeah, you're right in thinking that your care will be enough to maintain it in perfect state."
Zengar-R-SRG-1 then turns to Ginger-R-UYT-1.

(Should M.Burusu ever get unbanned, +1 Perversity)

(I, as relieved and shocked as I am about today's occurances, will make note of that.)

After recovering from the sudden shock of that new device, Marrow-R-BAP-1 managed to wheeze out, "Quite effective, excellent work . . . "

After gaining some more composure, she then asked, "Would it be possible for me to field-test some of those grenades? They seemed rather interesting, and even if a situation doesn't pop up that would require their use I'd be glad to swing back around to possibly launch some in a test environment for you."

Sadly, as Marrow-R-BAP-1 was reduced to a fine red mist, this didn't happen.

Instead, a chute a nearby wall opened; and with a shhhh-thonk sound, a slightly confused Marrow-R-BAP-2 was deposited into the research facility, with only vague memories of the last few moments of her life. This never happened, Citizen.

Genj-I-EEE-4 looks toward Nietz-R-PHD-1 and asks, "What is your clearance level, citizen?"

Rou-R-KAN-1 carefully takes the DoorMarkerPlusPlus from Ginger-R-UYT-1, pulling out a cloth and cleaning it obsessively. "Ah," says Genj-I-EEE, turning on Zengar-R-SRG-1 nearly a minute after his prior question elapsed. "if you're going to try to make something with moving parts, you might as well forget it. But, you could make a handy Funball Bat."

Peter-R-WQR-1 can tell there are one hundred and four visible individual parts outside the Nev-R-Break Plasma Cannon. This doesn't really give him any idea how many shots it has. It doesn't seem to have a removable barrel like lasers do, so there's no indicator there.

"I was wondering if I could try my hand with that very nice-looking loudspeaker-type device...erm, what do you call it again?  As Communications and Recording Officer, I reckon I'd be in the best position to, ah, make sure any Commie Mutant Traitors we come across get The Point."

With that decided, the rest of the process runs rather smoothly. You are each given a small portion of Play-Duralim, about the same amount that was used to create the big metal cube now littering the middle of the floor. With that, you are escorted out of the R&D facility and back down to the Red-Clearance area, where you given paperwork to fill out for the experimental equipment. The forms are fairly straight-forward, stating that you take responsibility for the care and maintenance of the valuable equipment, as well as financial responsibility should something happen to them. Of course, when you are paid 1000 credits a month, and your living expenses as mandated by Friend Computer are 1000 credits a month, this can be troublesome, especially when these items are all valued over 1 million credits.

Oddly related to that, as you leave the R&D facility, you hear a tinny buzz, as the monitors along the wall suddenly light up with the words, "Congratulations!" as graphics of streamers and confetti fill the background. Then you hear a voice you know well, that of Friend Computer itself!

Congratulations, citizens! You are the 81st group to visit Research and Development K413! 10,000 credits are deposited into your accounts now. Please make use of them in fun, loyal, completely Kovar-free ways!

Thought of the Day: Treason grows from idleness."

Then everything falls quiet again, and save for the applause of the secretary, which quickly follows. Stepping outside, the group finds itself engulfed and quickly separated by a mob of citizens chattering excitedly about getting to a live recording of "Zap that Mutie!" However, everyone knows where to go, so it should be no difficulty to gather there.

But being alone and seperated, and having two hours until it is time to depart, it's also quite easy for individual troubleshooters to slip off and visit particular individuals should they feel the need. Or, perhaps, they could visit the Infrared Market and quietly spend those newly-acquired credits on something to help out with the upcoming mission. Or some brave souls could try to visit the supply depot as well, in hopes of requisitioning equipment without cost.

(OOC: PM me what you are doing, I will PM what you find/get. When you are ready to continue, post yourself at Hanger 4FH, then we can start this for reals. Of note, anyone who does not post arriving there will be considered to have dropped the RP. (Not quite go time yet, but I figured I would give you some time to play whilst everyone is finishing up)

The hangar is a fairly spacious place, with nearly a dozen flybots about, and a spacious runway. Red and Orange citizens swarm about here and there, maintaining and loading the flybots. There are even a couple of vultures here; watched over carefully by green IntSec goons who seem to be just waiting to beat someone with a stun baton.

Flybot YYM is not hard to find; its door stands open, and anyone peeking inside can see there is room for quite a few people, and a few FunPlastic containers placed in the back.

(Salright. S'long's you're here. =])

The appointed time comes. From within the flybot, a gravelly, staticy, monotone voice that sounds similar to an electronic larynx says, "Alright, guys, it's time to take off. Let's get going before the traffic gets too bad. Ha. Ha. Ha."

The team boards the flybot, seeking out decent seats and buckling themselves in. There are far too many vidshows about people who haven't buckled themselves in to think otherwise. The flybot gently lifts from the ground, and soars out of the hanger. Glancing through the windows, you can see the sector whizzing by outside.

"By the way my name's YYM," says on the staticy flybot, "You'd be surprised how many people never bother to learn my name. It's a little unfair don't you think. I mean I have to learn your names but no one seems to bother to remember mine after they board. Don't worry I'm not mad at you. You've been polite. One time I had a traitor from Death Leopard board me. He kept spray painting butts all over my monitors. You have no idea how mad that made me. But he got his. A troubleshooter turned him into fine mist all over my left console bank. Ha. Ha. Ha. It's a joke do you get it. Spraypaint. Mist. Ha. Ha. I should send these in to the central joke database don't you think."

Glancing out the window, one can see that the complex is really speeding past now, buildings are blurring together. Then the flybot's interior darkens as it enters a transit tunnel. It seems like there is a single light running along the tunnel, but if you squint you can tell that they are actually spaced quite far apart.

"But really I hated that guy. It took weeks for someone to notice the butt he sprayed on my tertiary monitor in Reflect-U paint. It was so embarrassing. I would try to draw attention to it but no one would be able to pick up the hint. Can you imagine what it is like to say 'Some traitor painted a butt on my monitor but you cannot see it unless you look at it just right'. Well I suppose it served Wrig-G-LLE-3 right in the end. You see I had to learn his name. But he never really bothered to learn mine. Just the moment no one was looking he brought the spray paint out and started vandalizing me. How he got into IntSec enforcement I'll never know. It just goes to show you that there are traitors everywhere doesn't it."

The flybot lurches a little as it makes a turn. Every now and again, you feel it shake a little bit. After a few times, some of the brighter sparks in the group are able to determine that is the result of passing another flybot; they seem to be going by too fast for anyone's eyes to really register.

"Death Leopards are really quite a pain you know. But one time this traitor who was part of Pro-Tech tried to steal me. It was very embarrassing. You see I don't have external controls. You would think he would know that if he was such a technophile that he would commit treason over it. But no. He was just trying to find the joystick he called it. Ha. Like I would have one of those. By the time IntSec caught him he was trying to mess with my central commands. Ha. As though fleshy vat slime like him could hope to mess with my code."

Looking out the window now, one can see that the lights which had previously merged together now seem to be passing by more slowly, but in the wrong direction, as though they were traveling in the same direction as you were.

"But sometimes I get good passengers you know. One time about three monthcycles ago, Yoh-O-MOU-2 rode in me. She was nice enough to vacuum up after she spilled packing foam all over the place. It is a shame she never finished. She got shot with a FreezyBuddy and shattered into a million pieces. And they melted before someone cleaned them up. Do you have any idea how gross that is. Having people pieces on your floor. I think I figured out what wanting to vomit felt like that daycycle. I hope they catch that Hag-G-ARR-3 and give him the business."

Looking outside, the lights in the tunnel are starting to blend together again, but this time in the same direction that the flybot is traveling.

"Hey have you ever watched 'That's My Troubleshooter'. I was in that last yearcycle. Yeah I'm a star. They even interviewed me. It was the episode about when Grumpy-O-MAN-3 saved Alpha Complex from Ranger-G-ORD-1's attempt to cover Sector YEK in some kind of super-powered strain of vat slime. They never asked me what I thou-Hello, Loyal Citizens!"

The Computer's voice booms from YYM's speakers. Then, as one, all of the monitors in the flybot, including the windows, flicker out and resolve themselves into The Computer's Eye. (http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5163/newerfc.gif) Things are silent for a second as the multitude of eyes look in every which direction.

"I'm so pleased to see all eight of you made it today!" It continues after that moment of silence. "It's absolutely inspiring to see troubleshooters so punctual and eager to serve! If only all of Alpha Complex could learn from such a sterling example... But alas, someday. For now, I bet you're just brimming with eagerness to get on with your fun, exciting, and completely radiation free mission for today! And wow is it going to be a big one! You'll be at Sector TOH for a few days most likely, but worry not loyal citizens! I personally took the precaution of including supplies stored FunPlastic containers so that you won't starve or dehydrate or be embarrassingly dirty. Be sure to make good and correctly efficient use of them, accounting for each expenditure accurately! I'll be expecting great things of you, but I know in my heart that you can do it! Loyalty citizens, I believe in you! We simply can't leave this menace unchecked."

And with that, the Computer's eye fades from the monitors and window screens. "-ght about Grumpy-O-MAN-3. He seemed nice enough but you know-oh we're here. Funny how that creeps up on you. Ha. Ha. Ha."

The ballet of lights outside the tunnel suddenly scrambles to a halt as you feel the flybot decelerating. "You aren't that bad of a group I should say," YYM says as it slows. "But perhaps we'll get to know each other since I am ordered to stay here until the mission is done."

Then it opens the hatch, allowing the group to go free.

Outside the flybot, you find yourself in fairly wide hall, easily large enough to serve as a major thoroughfare if it were designated correctly. About a hundred yards ahead of you, you can see a large metallic structure, looking oddly similar to a cone-shaped bunker. It seems to be about sixty or so feet tall at its top, and about 200 or so yards across. On top of it, you can see a number of boxy machines, probably air-cyclers, that seem to be arranged in some kind of pattern; just barely missing the ceiling of the sector. It is clearly quite old, for the metal has some discoloration here and there. As well, you can see old debris dotting the bunker's sloping roof. The north part of the bunker, which faces you and the flybot, seems to have collapsed in or been attacked as it is simply a twenty-foot high pile of wreckage and debris.

(And now, we begin for reals. Good luck, guys. And again, I am so, so sorry.)

"Wow, this place is pretty terrible. Just look at all this dust and rubble lying around. I'd do something about it but, well, it'd be a bad flag to trip if the Hygiene Officer got contaminated with something, wouldn't it?"

Rou-R-KAN-1 looks at his team leader expectantly.

"You have that big sword of yours, right? Think it can cut us a way open? I'll polish it for you after you're done, obviously..."

Specially walls. It may even break, and well, you know, breaking your equipment, even ig you bought it yourself, is outright treason."
Then, he faces the wall.
"Now that I think it, maybe it's time to see how well can the DoorMarkerPlusPlus work in this."

"Of course! How could I forget the DMPP!?"

Roukan lifts the rifle from his back, weighing it in his hands. He seems guilty about leaving fingerprints on it as he aims.

"...Hm, but which wall do we pick? We don't know how thick a wall this sort of thing can penetrate, and if we're wrong it could a painful bad end stuck inside a rock or something. This might be too technical a job for a hygiene officer..."

He pulls out a small cloth and rubs at the marks his finger left on the gun, before cautiously offering it to Ginger-R-UYT-1.

"You were wanting to use this gun earlier, weren't you? Odds are you'll probably be better with it than I am, anyway."

(When you decide to try the gun, be sure to tell me exactly where you are aiming. The north side is collapsed in, running about 200 feet across and about twenty feet up. The rest of it are smooth expanses about running up to the top; the west and east faces seem to be about 300 or so feet long.)

It is slow going, but with multiple people pitching in and working in shifts, some of the rubble is cleared around, and after progressing nearly three yards in, an opening is found! It takes nearly two hours to finish clearing out the rubble enough to have a comfortable passage for people to walk through single file.

Inside, you can see a dimly lit corridor with no clearance level, carrying on about thirty feet or so and ending in a large set of double doors. The walls are unremarkable, but the ceiling panels, about ten feet overhead are all a cluttered mess, apparently having been displaced by some event in the structure's past.

(OOC: Pesco gets a Perversity point for being correctly cheerful.)

Zengar quickly hits the open button on the door. With a soft hiss, the door slides open. Behind the door, however, is nothing but a blank section of wall.

Then there is a rumble above the group, before ceiling panels and large pieces of rubble rain down on everyone from above! Screaming with varying degrees of panic and pain, you all dash out of the corridor as the ceiling collapses and larges bits of sharp metallic rubble cut, scrap, and bash the daylights out of you.

But as it turns out, you didn't die. Every manages to escape, making their way outside and probably collapsing to the floor out of sheer nervous exhaustion, and pain. Oh the pain. No one has escaped unscathed, everyone is bleeding freely from various wounds. In particular, Zengar-R-SRG's left arm probably should not be bending like that, and Jamie-R-SWH-1's right hand seems to resemble a broken accordion.

Looking toward the passage you uncovered, it seems that cave in has completely blocked it off.

(OOC: You are all now wounded and bleeding freely! You need medical attention rather badly. Zengar and Jamie are maimed, the arm and hand that I mentioned no longer work until correct medical attention can be applied to them, or enough time has passed for them to heal on their own.

Some of you might say, "But I wasn't actually in that hallway!" To this I reply, "Shoulda posted that." The Docbot sets to work dispensing bandages and antiseptic sprays and syringes and who knows what to Roukan. But by the end of the process, Roukan's wounds look a lot less messy and he seems significantly less miserable than before; likely there was a shot of HappyTimes in all of that.

Ginger emerges from the Flybot as Abot enters it, and the Docbot moves toward her to claim the medical supplies, then zeros in on Nietz to administer similar treatment. Afterward, it turns its attention on Zengar, and makes some disappointed sounding beeps as it starts to work on him.

Or something like that.

The Docbot goes from person to person, treating their wounds and administering Computer-Approved mood elevators, painkillers and hormone balancers. Curiously, though, it only spends a moment or two examining Ginger and Abot before going to the next person.

Soon enough, everyone is more or less as well as they are going to get: Still wounded, but no longer in danger of bleeding out and not in that much pain any more. Those whose limbs are mangled have them in splints now, and usable enough.

The corridor you unearthed with the door that opened to a wall is now pretty much completely buried and the dust has settled.

Everyone's PDC rings once, then without prompting, answers itself.

Loyal Troubleshooters, I see that several hours have passed and you are waiting patiently outside the structure. I wish you the most heartfelt of congratulations on completing your mission! However, I am a little concerned that you took it upon yourselves to seal the entrance. But we shall consider that when you turn in your briefing reports.

"...Ah. Well, Jamie, you're Comms Officer, so I guess you'd better explain our situtation to Friend Computer. Careful with those flags~!"

Rou-R-KAN-1 looks around to realise the Comms Officer has disappeared.

"...Ah."

He pulls out his PDC and speaks into it.

"Friend Computer, this is Rou-R-KAN-1 speaking. Troubleshooter potentially trapped within the structure. Requesting permission for re-entry?"

Rou-R notes, as he grabs his PDC, that the usual screen has been replaced with the Computer's Eye. After making his request, every PDC relays the answer. "How tragic of an event to befall poor Citizen Jamie-R-SWH-1! Yes, it is mandatory that you rescue this citizen immediately! Take caution when digging into the rubble. It is possible the enemy has placed false entrances."

Rou-R-KAN-1 starts to haul rubble away, going for the smallest pieces he can find. He's not exactly the strongest of Troubleshooters, and besides that it means that he's less likely to get dust all over his pristine uniform.

Rou-R-KAN-1 messes with the controls a little on the experimental weapon. It takes a few minutes worth of puttering to get the device to do anything, then:

YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY, CITIZEN

The voice reverberates throughout the chamber, as the concentrated waves of sound rattle the fallen debris visibly; making some of the topmost things leap into the air. Then it settles again, with some small slides of scree here and there. The pile of debris is still there, but it has been rattled severely. Everyone can make out two depressions within it; one in roughly the middle of the pile, due north, and other close to the north-eastern end of the installation.

The party pitches in, and within about twenty minutes or so they have successfully removed the rubble and scree to reveal a doorway. Given their wounds, it is not as pleasant of an experience as it could be, but the Docbot's prior ministrations keeps them mostly intact.

Beyond the doorway, a long hallway, twenty feet wide, stretches into the installation. It is barely lit; the lights running along the corners are dim and seem to be nearly spent. Still, it is easy to make the shockingly and treasonously colorful floor and walls. The floor seems to be composed of numerous colored tiles placed haphazardly, easily covering pretty much all of the primary colors. A line of red tiles forms a path that leads inside, twisting to and fro along the hall with no apparent pattern.

The walls bear various strange scenes that seem to have been skillfully painted on them. Many of them seem to be scenes of the Outdoors; at least the look kind of like scenes you've seen from Outdoors. Every in these scenes are people in strange clothes that do not declare any sort of security clearance; most are a rather dirty shade of brown. They seem to be moving among...yellowish wavy things that are Outdoors and carry weird-looking bladed tools. Some of them drive weird vehicles with comically large back wheels. The people seem to be rather disparate in appearance, with all sorts of skin colors and such. Beards and mustaches seem to be common on the men, though.

There are other scenes, as well, further in. Just barely visible from the entrance is what seems to be a picture of a room full of training manuals. This is interesting as it seems to have a kind of small storage container jutting out of the wall, but it is difficult to tell from this angle. Further in, you think you see something that looks sorta like a door painted onto the wall.

At the very back, there looms a huge thing that looks like a face; but it is some distance away and hard to make out in the poor light.

(OOC: This hallway is wide enough that I will need to be told which side of it you'll be walking down if you enter, right or left.)

Nietz-R makes his way inside, keeping to the right and traversing about thirty feet; walking along the red path for the last twenty of that as it wends over to his side of the hall.

Abot-R keeps to the left side, walking slowly inward and following the red path for the first ten feet or so. Thus far, he has gotten about twenty feet it.

(OOC: Roukan did not choose right or left. So I chose at random. IE: I asked the people in chat to choose.)

Rou-R walks down the right side of the hall, walking opposite of the red path for about 20 feet, then onto the red path as he passes by Nietz-R, who is considering the picture painted there. Then, about 40 feet into the hall; a bit under one third of it's length; the floor under Rou-R's feet tilts downward. Caught off guard, he falls downward and vanishes. Everyone can hear a muffled thump, a scream of pain, and then a loud electrical zap as the floor sections teeter-totters up and down on a single axle, and soon settles back into place.

The DocBot tends to Rou-R's wounds, as well as giving him a new dose of painkillers and happiness drugs to take the edge off. Ginger-R hands Rou-R a flashlight, and moves inwards, giving them to Abot-R, then Nietz-R, then Peter-R, then Zengar-R.

Along the left wall continues the large mural of treasonously dressed people among the Outside with their blades and silly big-wheeled vehicles. On the right side, which Nietz is currently examining, is a painting of a room full of training manuals. Most notable about it is that there seems to be a container built into the wall, with paintings of two large, bearded men in fur hats with red stars upon the front. They are painted to look as though the are holding the container. The container is not very large, just large enough to fit in both of one's hands. It seems to be firmly affixed to the wall.

In front of where the pit is -- now easily seen and avoided due to the hole in it -- there is a painting of what seems to be a steel door with a small barred window, and two hands gripping that door. It looks rather convincingly realistic.

Looking around, everyone also notices that the wallls don't seem to be made of panels like everything else in Alpha Complex. Rather, it seems the whole wall is one huge continuous panel. The wall doesn't seem to be made of metal; it looks more like cheap plasticy stuff made from the leftovers of the food vats.

Rou-R fiddles with something under the box. Then a 10'x10' section of floor opens up under his feet. This happens to be the same section of floor that Nietz-R, Zengar-R, Peter-R, and Ginger-R were all standing upon; or lying upon as the case may be.

Abot-R, who was just off to the side, is treated to a lovely chorus of screams ending in combination of a series of wet noises, which is terminated in a loud electrical crackle. Glancing down the hole that just opened up, and seems to have no intention of closing, he can see a 30 foot drop that terminates into a variety of sharp-looking, exposed electronics, now with quite a bit of char covering them.

Rou-R-KAN-2 had been mildly suspicious after Abot's refusal to conform to the PHT, and so the gun was only a slight shock. Abot-R whips out a non-standard looking weapon and fires it at Rou-R! Unfortunately, the weapon makes a weird buzzing noise and a voice from it says:"I-would-just-like-to-take-this-moment-to-complain-about-your-maintainence-routines." The overall effect is to make the shot go quite a few feet wide and splat again the debris outside, splashing some of it and some of Ginger-R with vivid orange paint.

Rou-R, in the meantime, falls onto his back and doesn't achieve much of anything; although the shot would have gone over him had it been more on target.

Peter raises the barrel of the Nev-R-Break Plasma Cannon and levels it at Abot, finger on the trigger, and pulls it, hoping for the effect of properly shooting.

"Ow..."

Rou-R-KAN-2 rolls to the side, sitting up and rubbing the new bruises on his back. He catches a sight of Ginger.

"Agh! That paint! So...unhygienic!"

Rou runs behind Ginger, pulling out a cloth and rubbing the paint from his jumpsuit. He seems completely ignorant of the fight that has started.

Abot-R tries to reach for something. Unfortunately, a laser from Nietz-R distracts him from doing so; the shot goes a little wide, the nearness of it is enough to make Abot-R freeze. Then a piercingly loud noise from Ginger-R rifle and a blast of white-hot plasma from Peter's Plasma Rifle do not leave enough of Abot-R left to dream of imagining of trying.

Nietz-R's laser leaves a burn on one of the scenes of Outside. Peter-R's plasm shot, however has eaten clean through a yard-wide patch of painting, and melted a fair amount of the metal underneath before cooling. Rou-R, in the meantime, sets to cleaning his fellow Troubleshooter and mostly removing himself from the line of fire.

(OOC: Abot-R has be Vaporized! Let's have a round of applause! His clone shall arrive in good time, carry on.)

Peter holsters the Nev-R-Break Plasma cannon, and goes over to where the hole made by his last shot is, and decides to look inside of it.

Zengar-R-SRG-2 walks slowly towards the spot where Abot used to be.
"I trust... you guys used your better judgement on these actions... right?"

After hearing Nietz-R-PHD-2's account of the deal, Zengar proceeded to adopt a more relaxed stance.
"If that's so... then good job, guys. I didn't thought we'd have... such scum between us."

Nietz-R-PHD-2 inspects the painted door.

Ginger hurls a fist-sized stone down the hallway. It lands about 60 feet down its length, and skips another ten before coming to a rest. It fails to detonate or otherwise meet an untimely end.

Nietz finds that the painted door is positioned in front of the pit that Rou-R-KAN-1 had fallen down, and marked by his escape. This will make inspection a little difficult.

Ginger lifts a much larger rock, and, visibly struggling, drops it in front of the pit before pushing it over the edge.

"Zitizen Peter-R-WQR-2, perhapz you could fire you plasma veapon on ziz painted door as vell. If it hides, az I suzpekt, a passage, maybe it vill appear. Even if there iz not, it iz only Communist property zat vill be damaged."

Steps to a safe distance.

Ginger drops the rock down the pit that most of the group had fallen into. It plummets to the bottom, and smashes into the some of the exposed electronics, creating an angry electric crackle that invokes a terrible feeling in everyone there, a sort of half-remembered shadow.

"Well, if you would like to open this passage, then why don't you try using the plasma cannon yourself?" Peter responded, offering the Nev-R-Break Plasma cannon to Nietz for a moment.

Finishes inspecting the gun and levels it pointed against the painted door, lowers it, assesses the distance, takes two steps backwards, raises the gun again, waits, takes two more steps backwards, aims carefully and pulls the trigger.

Nietz-R-PHD-2 turns the Plasma rifle against the mural of a barred door, and unleashes a blinding, white-hot blast of plasma against it.

By the time it has burned through, the mural is gone, as well as the wall behind it. Beyond is a hallway that continues about ten feet before ending in another door. Looking at the hole burnt into the wall, there are a set of half-melted hinges that suggest there was a door behind that fresco.

Ginger-R, in the meantime, gathers a few more rocks.

"Now, I wonder if there iz a way o zafely crossing zat hole in ze ground."
