Hello, and welcome to the Gensokyo Quest thread!
This is a Forum/IRC RPG that I'm working on, that will function similarly to any Shin Megami Tensei / Final Fantasy / Dragon Quest title.
Quick link to the chatroom (http://webchat.ppirc.net/?channels=gensoquest)
Due to horrible lag after the third session, we've switched to using http://chat.mibbit.com
Type in a name, and then #gensoquest for the channel! See ya there~
On character generation
You choose your character class, come up with a name, specify any bonus stats for further customization (Will I add points to Attack, or Defense...?), and you have all the information I'd need to generate your character!
Team up with other forum members and investigate the latest mystery that's going on in Gensokyo!
Class descriptions can be found below, and data is here (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,12793.msg841720.html#msg841720) and here, (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,12793.msg841726.html#msg841726) but just as a reminder:
There are three human classes, and three Youkai classes, and one Shrine Maiden class.
They all have different stats, skill sets, equipment tiers, etc etc etc to choose from. You cannot change a character's class or bonus points once you've generated them, so choose wisely!
If you pick a class that recieves two weapon types, please specify which initial equipment you'd like, or I'll coin-toss it.
Stage 1 and Stage 2 have been fully prepared. Stages 3 - 6 will be finished in the coming weeks.

About the game
Create a character, and customize your stats. They'll be stuck that way forever, so be careful.
You control your character and move around the game world with the teamwork of three other shrinemaiden.org members in a fantasy JRPG set in the Touhou universe.
Gensokyo Quest features turn-based battles and requires you to use a lot of thought and strategy in your moves, and in your character setup.
Equip collectable Grimoires to supplant your skill trees with additional abilities and to augment your character with various elemental affinities and resistance.
Cirno's Grimoire will enable you to cast Ice-based spells, and will grant you an immunity to ice attacks, while Mystia's enables darkness-based spells, but makes you weak to Light.
Upon levelling up, you may learn a special skill that is reserved for characters of your class. A Shrine Maiden might learn Fantasy Seal, while a Tengu would learn Illusionary Dominance. You can use these skills regardless of Grimoires, and they'll typically cost less Special Points to use too!
Gensokyo Quest will feature many of the Touhou characters in an expansive adventure that spans 6 "Stages," from the PC-98 era to Ten Desires. It will feature travel to many locations in Gensokyo, from Hakugyokurou, to Eientei, to the Forest of Magic, to Muenzuka.
Please refer to the stat tables when considering what Bonus Points to apply to your character.
Note that the dice rolls I produce can only be rethrown once for each character, in the event of an unsatisfactory roll.
Saving your game IS A VIABLE COMMAND. Do it liberally! The current game data is deleted if you Game Over, and will have to be reloaded.
Old post:
I've been thinking for a while how amazing a needlessly complicated and long-winded JRPG emulation on a forum board would be.
So I'm just tossing out the thought.
The general idea is that players (you forum members) pick one of the eight classes that all differ in stats, learned skills, allotted weapons, etc etc etc and form 'parties' to progress through the 'game' and defeat the Final Boss at the 'end.'
Does this sound like something people would like to try out?
Execution is key, of course. Before I dive in I will try to figure this out.
I've put together various formulae, tables, and outlines for each of the classes, which are a mix of the standard, and Touhou.
Warrior - uses Swords
Specializes in offensive skills
Knight - uses Swords
Utilizes buff/debuff moves, has some attack skills
Magician - uses Staves, Spell Cards
Uses laser attacks
Combat Medic - uses Staves, Swords
Restoration and healing magic
Shrine Maiden - uses Staves, Spell Cards
Specializes in exorcism (instant death) spells
Tengu - uses Spell Cards
(Based off Aya, mostly. A mish-mash of different skills.)
Oni - uses Swords, Spell Cards
Utilizes some incredibly powerful skills at the expense of stats
I figure how variance and individuality would work in this setup would be:
You have 25 points to add to any of your base stats. You may not add more than 15 to one stat.
I will roll dice to determine further variance, from -10 to +10. You will be notified of these at character generation and can opt to be rerolled once.
The stats are
Hit Points
Special Points
Phys Attack
Phys Defense
Magical Attack
Magical Defense
Speed / "Agility"
It's pretty obvious to tell that Tengus will have a higher Speed stat than Onis, so consider that. I can post a full breakdown of the strengths/weaknesses of each class if this gets a sizeable amount of interest.
(An example)
Lv 3 Warrior / Lv 3 Knight Taizen
HP: 364 / 266
SP: 124 / 131
PA: 24 / 23
PD: 17 / 19
MA: 11 / 14
MD: 16 / 13
AG: 11 / 19
(The Warrior it might look is statistically better, but the Knight has better defensive skills)
Assuming Cirno appears in the game and you decide to beat her down for whatever reason, she having 7 Defense for example would imply damages of 34 and 32, respectively.
Stuff about mechanics:
Turn order, if applicable, will be posted at the end of each update. Those who are playing will have their actions executed in that order, with exceptions to certain skills.
Failure to submit a move during battle after around 24 hours results in a forfeited turn. Conversely, if every member has submitted a command, then it can continue immediately.
All moves will be accompanied with a roll of two dice.
For example, Player A attacks. If the dice come up snake eyes (1/36 chance), then they missed. If you rolled a 12 (also 1/36), it counts as a critical and gets bonus damage.
There are some exceptions, such as Fantasy Seal (1/6 success), and Illusionary Dominance (1/3 success)
Who the enemies are attacking will be determined by rolling as many dice as there are players and using a modulo operation (sum of dice % number of dice)+1.
If a party member defeats an enemy you have targeted, your new target is randomly chosen using the modulo.
All party members share EXP, and experience curves. The only difference pertaining to it is when characters learn new skills. All characters who aren't Shrine Maiden or Oni class learn their first skill at level two- Oni begin at three and Shrine Maidens pick up Fantasy Seal from the get-go.
I figure the game can be written around player parties of three through five. Four, preferably, but any of those can do. Any more and it gets a tad difficult to keep track of.
Plus there can't be any discrepancies in the intentions of the teams, I guess. You'd have to team up with people you know'd be willing to work with you.
And it also isn't as if I can have 70 turn megabosses in play either. Hell, even five turns per battle is a stretch here.
So maybe random encounters are automatically fought and only bosses have direct input?
Perhaps it could be alleviated somewhat to have the game done over IRC? And maybe just post a chatlog in the thread for later reference...
As mentioned before, execution for a project on this scale could make or break it, but it does seem like an interesting prospect. Well, to me, anyway :V
I don't quite have everything ironed out, so that's where your input would be very valuable, and much appreciated.
Given, of course, people want into this sort of thing.
That being said, this isn't quite a game yet. Should I have posted this here? :fail:
-
Probably the right place, yes, but I doubt it'll work out. Trying to implement a specific battle system seems to be what killed Yoshika Quest, so I see little reason to expect it to work here. If you want to go ahead with it, well, it's your choice, but just be careful; it's real easy for people to lose interest.
-
It sounds like a really good idea, but
tl;dr it seems a bit too long-winded for little ol' short-attention-span me.
You may get some of the more focussed and determined folk joining, but...
Trying to implement a specific battle system seems to be what killed Yoshika Quest, so I see little reason to expect it to work here. If you want to go ahead with it, well, it's your choice, but just be careful; it's real easy for people to lose interest.
^this.
-
Actually, Yoshika Quest went on hiatus due to things coming up for the parser, according to what he told me once in IRC.
-
Maybe, but it wasn't exactly getting many responses during battles, and I'm pretty sure the last post made was from the parser.
-
Actually, you were the last poster.
-
Well damn. I'm pretty crap at game development (I can make a fully featured RPG engine, but not the game?) so I was hoping this would work. I guess that's kind of a stretch >_>
-
Personally, I think it could work on IRC. Just get a dicebot and stuff like the D&D/Whatever folks do.
-
Yes, that sounds like a good idea. That's probably the crowd this would appeal to most, anyways.
-
Indeed, I can think of a couple that might go for it. myself included.
-
I'd go for it. Been a long time since I played an RPG game that doesn't involve just you controlling a bunch of characters.
-
I'd definitely go for it in IRC. It would probably be easier to keep people interested and would speed up the process. I can see this dragging slightly if kept in the forum.
Also, IRC kicks ass.
-
tbh it doesn't matter for me if it's IRC or forum, but yeah, IRC seems better.
-
Well in that case, I'll consider throwing together the class sheets for people to choose from :3
In the meantime, I'd like an opinion on the format.
How I think it would go, would be for groups of four or five people to all find some time to get on IRC (you see this gets complicated now) to play the game.
(Perhaps set up a room on Mibbit or something.)
Does that seem feasible, what with timezones and work and shit?
-
I think that could work. I'd put it on the MoTK IRC, because most folks(myself included) can be found there.
-
Would they mind me showing up and running a forum game? :/
-
That's the beauty of it, you can make your own little side-room.
Take that old Grail War game, it had one for chatting and stuff.
Well, it should be fine, so long as you haven't been banned or anything.
Hell, you could even mention it in the main channel/room, and you might get even more players.
-
Oh, excellent. On a related note,

How does it look? :V
-
Looks good, though it'd help to have those little chart things set to numbers for each specific milestone, so they can be read out like the below example.
Here's an example modeled after the Tengu Class, as if the max stat score was 5. (With the exception of HP/SP.)
(Maybe putting specific numbers at each stat point thing for each class? Y'know, to show the base stats upon creation and stuff.)
Hit Points: 10?
Special Points: 9?
P-Atk: 3-4?
P-Def: 2-3?
M-Atk: 3-4?
M-Def: 2-3?
Spd/Agi: 5
-
What if I made the relevant information readily available?
(But in a simplified sense of course.)
-
Oh I am so IN.
That chart looks great! But I agree with Hanzo, if you add some refference numbers it'd be awesome.
E: You already posted it :V
-
Okay, that could work. But maybe simplify it to a more tabletop format.
So the Tengu stats would be more like so.
HP: 15
SP: 7
P-Atk/M-Atk: 13
P-Def/M-Def: 8
SPD/AGI: 18
Also, I'm surprised at how little P-Def Oni have, considering as how they were renowned for being insanely durable.
(Sure, their HP Totals reflect that, but you;d think they'd at least have a 70/7 P-Def count.)
-
This seems fun.
I want to play as a Youmu Knight then :V
-
I'm currently writing Stage 1, then, featuring a Hakurei Shrine festival and a tutorial boss fight with Cirno.
I suppose people can take this time to name their characters and define their classes.
Do look over the stuff in the first post when considering your class, you'll be stuck learning those types of moves until you stop learning moves at Level 20.
The formulas, Hanzo, are founded on diminishing returns, so 5 defense isn't actually half of 10 defense.
It's closer to about 71%.
Besides, those are base stats, and characters at Level 1 will all have, like, only 6 to 8 in almost all of their stats anyway.
Also, mechanics. Find player parties, because I'm not tweaking the difficulty for solo players :V
It would be ideal if you all (plus me) had some free time, all at the same time.
And I'm also thinking about a means of customizing your characters further in the thought of what they're capable of doing- skills and such. Equippable items, not unlike SMT: Nocturne's Magatama, I'm probably going to settle with.
-
So it's possible to have Subclasses then?
For example, a Tengu Highwind(Aya-based, focuses mainly on Spd/M-Atk), and a Tengu Sentinel(Momiji, Focuses Mainly on P-Def/M-Def/P-Atk).
-
I meant customization as in skills, rather than stats.
I can draw up alternate stat tables for such things, but the skillsets would remain the same.
I've written up some brief documentation on the Grimoires, which are named after Touhou characters and bestow relevant skills.
Defeating Cirno earns you Mystia's Grimoire, which renders you weak to Light-based attacks, but absorbent of Darkness, and also allows you to cast some skills that only work when you have them equipped.
LOOK AT HOW COMPLICATED THIS IS GETTING OH GOD.
Stage 1 should only take about 20 minutes to get through, so I guess I should start on Stage 2 >_>
-
Well, the subclasses would be like the Grimoires. A certain equip would dictate the subclass by way of different skills and such.
For example, the Mystia Grimoire you mentioned would add the Class Suffix "Night Bard", or some variation of that.
-
Ahh, okay, I suppose. The Grimoires don't affect stats, though. At least, not the way I've set them up.
Perhaps they can be complete carbon copies of Magatama and just add points to your stats?
Oh wait, this is actually much closer to Devil of Decline's Shikigami, now.
Actually, I couldn't have them add points, I don't think. That would make one of the skills in Akyuu's completely redundant >_>
They'll just give you supplementary skills based on your level. Most of the opening ones have initial skills at Level 1, so you can use those immediately.
(Also, Night Bard Oni. Night Bard Shrine Maiden. I love this.)
-
It would be ideal if you all (plus me) had some free time, all at the same time.
I'm going to have to decline then, free time is lacking for me around now.
-
I'm going to have to decline then, free time is lacking for me around now.
Aww, I'm sorry.
I have a full-time job, but I'm still off for two days a week and for most of the day I'm not working...
I'll have to appoint someone else who can also run this game when/if I'm too busy >_>
Everyone willing to play, pick names, classes, and distribute 25 stat points, no more than 15 in one stat.
If there are more than five of you, split into parties.
Stage 1 should start soon, if we can get an available day.
Also, IRC. I'll try to familiarize myself with it more or something >_>
-
Having them like Shikigami seems like the best way to do things.
And to help things along more, I went and made the IRC room!
http://webchat.ppirc.net/?channels=gensoquest
Who knows, this could get pretty damn popular.
NINJA EDIT: Hangon, if the stat totals are triple-digit, how is the 25 points thing supposed to work?
And we could also make the sessions weekly things, so as to make it convenient for everyone.
So if 1 Session = 1 Stage, then around 1-2 Months = 6 Stages+Possible EX Stage.
-
You add the points to the base stat. A difference of 15 base stat points in the formulas, at the level cap of 32, result in a difference akin to:
HP: 200 vs 215
Case 1: 1151 HP
Case 2: 1229 HP
PA: 155 vs 170 (Assuming a Weapon Power of 50)
Case 1: 40.94 -> 289 Effective Attack Power
Case 2: 44.48 -> 314 Effective Attack Power
The difference isn't huge, but it's there, and it's something that you control.
-
Ah, I see.
It's a far cry from the D&D style I'm used to though.
Well, I'll get to hammering things out I guess.
-
And, OP updated.
Everyone make your characters!
Here's an example of me making the character sheet:
Taizen Chisou, Tengu, Level 1
Bonus points: (You choose these to customize your stats.)
HP + 12
PAtk + 1
PDef + 6
MDef + 6
Dice rolls: (These are variances that I produce in your character at random.)
HP + 2
SP + 0
PAtk + 6
PDef + 6
MAtk - 2
MDef + 8
Spd - 8
Oh, my, it appears as though I am an unusually slow tengu.
The initial sword equipment is the Wooden Stick, with a Power rating of 9. The Magic rating is 5.
The initial armor for Tengu class is Raggedy Clothing, with an Armor rating of 8. The Magic Armor rating is 5. The Speed rating is 10.
A note on equipment
Your equipped weapon modifies your PAtk and MAtk to produce your Effective Attack stats, which actually are the stats used in damage calculation
The equipped armor modifies PDef and MDef to produce the Effective Defense stats. It also has a speed rating that determines how mobile you are wearing the armor. 10 is average in this case.
The formulas return the following:
Lv. 1
EXP 0 / 15 (Of course.)
HP = 189
SP = 82
Effective stats:
Physical Attack = 14
Physical Defense = 9
Magical Attack = 9
Magical Defense = 7
Agility = 17
Whoof, that's a lot of calculator work. I'm going to have to program a handler for this.
Naturally, I'm not actually going to play.
It wouldn't be fair because I'd be able to find all of the Grimoires and know all the weaknesses and yada yada. This is just an example ~
-
All right, all of Stage 2 has been plottted out, all of the Equipment has been drawn up, and a bit of the map has been drawn out.
It's only slightly difficult mapping out all of Gensokyo :I
A reminder to those who would like to play to please generate their characters!
-
Okay, so we're about ready to start this shit up yo!
Just in case you forgot, it's all going down here! http://webchat.ppirc.net/?channels=gensoquest
So Grim/The Duke, since you wanted in, come on down! We've already got a Magician, a Warrior, and a Combat Medic!
(Unless, you're said medic.)
-
D:!!
Damn, somebody beated me to the Medic!
/me throws papersheet to the fire
-
You can be another medic, allocate your stats differently, and use different Grimoires?
Alternatively, there's still the Knight, Oni, Tengu, and Shrine Maiden classes.
And the Fairy Class that'll exist as soon as a party beats the game / I get bored of not having a Fairy Class.
So you know, options!
Should our first game session be on Friday, starting between 11 to 1?
I have work then, at 4:00, but I'd like to know if y'all are free.
(Central time zone.)
-
I should be free then. Dunno about Yugian though.
-
Sounds good. *PST here.*
-
I took the Knight :p
Hmmm I think I can make it at that hour, but if I can't I'll let you guys know beforehand
-
@Duke I'm sure we can find a time.
There has been a little bit added to the OP.
Any character making would be put into the second party now.
I'm doing simulation runs on my own of the stats as a means to check balance and stuff.
Changes include a healing-type Grimoire that will be easily accessible before the Saigyou Ayakashi
battle, because you all can look forward to hilarious moments such as
Saigyou Ayakashi unleashes a rain of cherry blossoms!
Magician Hanzo recieves 90 damage.
Medic Hater recieves 112 damage.
Warrior Yugian recieves 147 damage.
Knight The Duke recieves 180 damage.
Saigyou Ayakashi unleashes a rain of cherry blossoms!

I've made modifications to different Grimoires, enemy statistics, the damage formula, experience formula, and the player stat formulas.
Namely, some Grimoires don't have as good of a resistance set as they used to, some enemies are stronger, or weaker, or got a HP boost, you deal less damage, you don't get as much HP now, and you'll get lesser and lesser the higher level you are, as opposed to a flat linear curve based on your base HP.
The affected stats are HP and SP.
Players, your new initial stats are:
Hanzo: 211 HP, 154 SP
Hating: 241 HP, 87 SP
Yugian: 280 HP, 37 SP
Duke: 195 HP, 68 SP
This might not seem like much, compared to the amounts in your current sheets, but in reality I've shaved off about 30% of your HP and SP at Level 32.
-
Nooooeeesssss, less HP!
...Wait, if theres less HP, does that mean we didn't die at all or whatever?
-
It's to prevent situations where something that might have been previously impossible suddenly becomes impossible to lose because you levelled up once.
Your HP curve in particular was essentially 263 +38x, meaning that you'd have about 757 HP by the end of Stage 2.
But now, you'll only have 483, which means that it's much less feasible that you'd be able to tank the Saigyou Ayakashi's
explosion-y move when you get it down to 320 HP, which according to the damage formula, only would have dealt around 800 to someone at that point.
Warning: Boring Math Ahead
If Yuugian (Base P-Def = 102) is Level 13, and has Plate Armor equipped (Ph. Arm = 16), then he has an effective P-Def stat of 50.
The aforementioned boss has 52 P-Atk. The Cherry Blossom Blizzard attack has a base power of 50.
4 sqrt ( (50 / 8) 52^2 / 50 )
73 damage, out of Yugian's aforementioned 483 HP.
(In comparison, Hanzo + Magic Garb has 27 P-Def, and takes almost exactly 100 damage out of 403.)
If you knock the boss down to 320 / 1120 HP, then it will stop attacking you, use the Mind Charge equivalent, and charge for three turns, unleashing an attack with 255 Power. Probably the only way to get hit by this is to use Physical attacks, because of the bosses' Physical resistance and high P-Def of 50. (The formula returns that your Warrior would only deal 16 damage here. You won't have learned God Sword yet, so Power Smash on a Concentrate buff would deal 109 damage, which while better still consumes an asston of SP and you don't attack every turn anyway.)
The attack pierces defense, so everyone recieves exactly 820 damage.
-
Ah, to make it that much more of a TPK move, I get it!
-
Also, to prevent aforementioned balance issues. Getting 3 to 4 more defense per level up is probably good enough without tacking on 30 hit points, considering most enemies in the former half of Stage 2 hit for about that much.
Um, in fact, the game probably isn't remotely difficult until you fight Youmu. So...
Anyway!
First game session, Saturday 13:00 Central time. Sound good? (With everybody?)
-
Should work for me.
-
Works for me, yeah
-
Can you send me a message an hour before we start? I'm terrible with time.
-
Of course.
-
You guys should figure out another day for the next session.
My next off days are this upcoming Tuesday and Friday. Any other days would have to have it happen early in the day.
I've updated the main post regarding your save file.
I'm also adding the items you picked up to my notes, such as the Inaba Snack.
I'm buffing up the stats of a couple enemies, too. I can't have you one-shotting every enemy /all/ the time.
I'm also adjusting the experience formula. That is to say that I'm slowing down levelling further down the line. You won't be affected, being Level 3, but every 5 levels the formula will change to a slower one. This prevents situations where you beat a statistically difficult boss and then go "What? 360 experience? That's, like, six enemies."
Adding a new healing-centric Grimoire that'll be available before the Stage 2 boss, to prevent dying to said boss.
Stage 3 is mostly dungeon. Like, there are five dungeons, each with over 5 rooms. (The SDM's library has over ten.) It'll probably take a while to get past.
-
Either one's good for me. Same time of day as the last session?
-
If we can make it at the same time that today, then both of them fits me perfectly
-
Tuesday at 1:00, my time? All right ~
Don't be late!
As for edits to the game:
The experience curve, how I'm handling it now, is kind of jaggedy. The formula changes every 5n+1 level, so it creates hilarious situations such as
Level 24 - 08330
Level 25 - 09051
Level 26 - 10533
Level 27 - 11369
Daiyousei's Grimoire can now be found in Mayohiga, with a bit of looking.
Lesser Spirits are now Level 4 and Mayohiga enemies yield less EXP.
Ghost Jelly now has a use outside of as a Mix ingredient.
Marisa can synthesize attack items when presented with certain combinations of items.
Knight's Lv. 14 skill Manashield has been changed to affect the entire party at 250% SP cost.
Mamizou will now appear during Stage 2, rather than Stage 3 as planned. Her inventory won't be as expansive however.
This change doesn't apply to your party in particular, but the spells Illusionary Dominance and Peerless Wind God have been buffed to power levels of 85 and 95, respectively.
Oh, and since this was brought up during the session:
Notes on the costs of Grimoire skills, for reference:
First through fourth tier magical spells cost 5, 10, 24, 52 SP.
Multi-target variants require 12, 22, and 36 SP. There is no fourth-tier multi-target magical spell.
Extra costs are added for spells with added effects (e.g. "Jack the Ripper" - instant death)
Stat modifiers cost 11 SP for single, or 30 for party.
The SP cost of physical skills from a Grimoire is a function relative to it's power and secondary effects/element. (Mokou's "Flame Kick")
Healing spells from Grimoires cost 10, 18, then 30 SP. Multi-target variants require 23, 50, then 80 SP.
Innate skills naturally do not require SP (Lily's "Life Spring")
Character-specific skills have fixed requirements (Remilia's "Charisma Break")
Skills that drain SP do not require SP to use (unlike the Magician class skill)
I will be writing all of this into the compendium of information on the game.
-
More edits, brought on by the recent session:
Buffing Youmu's defenses by a buttload. Perhaps Phys Def 23 / Mag Def 19 was too squishy, because our resident optional-boss-defeating player party cleaved through her in three turns.
Suzu uses Star Maelstrom!
> Deals 84 damage to Youmu!
> Deals 84 damage to Youmu!
> Deals 84 damage to Youmu!
> Deals 84 damage to Youmu!
(Note that Youmu only has 640 HP.)
The Saigyou Ayakashi will also be given higher magical defense, to compliment the innate physical resistance nobody seemed to care about. It will also use Morcista twice, rather than once, and rather than Dekatera and Meditera to raise it's defenses, it'll simply use a compounded version of the two twice. Oh, and here's a big one: It will no longer Wait it's first turn.
Star Maelstrom is being notched down in power slightly.
I underestimated how broken it could potientally be >_>;
Due to the new damage formula, I've had to fiddle around with the power ratings of Power Smash and God Sword. They are now fixed at 27 and 65.
Knight's skills' power ratings are all being changed. Rapid Attack is being beefed to power 15, and Wide Sweep up to 14. Pierce Strike is being nerfed to power 10, which is on par with a standard attack.
The healing of Demi, Demices, Demisan will now depend on your MAtk, and have a formula, so I don't have to fiddle with the RNG and retab HP values manually. Same goes for all other healing spells.
And I will be editing my damage calculator to allow for 'fast' calculations so I can return values much quicker.
I'm not helping you anymore, either :<
I underestimated how quickly you guys would pound down that tree D:
-
To be fair though, I didn't expect Star Maelstrom to do THAT much damage to her.
And the only reason why the SA got chopped down so quickly was because it got hit by almost all of the stars.
To be honest, it whiffing Morcista was a CMoF (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CrowningMomentOfFunny).
-
The RNG returned perfect 6s twice :qq:
You see, your 62 MAtk vs her 19 MDef four times probably wasn't going to end well from the beginning.
And the Saigyou Akahashi only had 42 MDef. So I'm still nerfing the Star Maelstrom four or five points. However many to take it down to power 9, about a 25% decrease in damage output.
Morcista is a party-wide death spell. Instant death spells are funny? I'll keep that in mind.
-
The fact that it MISSED EACH TAG was the CMoF.
-
Edits!!
Perhaps the largest change is the increase in level cap :toot:
I also revamped the EXP formula to allow me to give out comfortably higher ranges of experience points without fear of you guys putting up a new level every three battles.
The end result is that the requirements are near-unaffected around your level (Getting to Level 13 will take you one more EXP than in the old formula), but the EXP required for the previous cap, Level 36, has jumped from 13,000 to 26,000, and the new Initial and Extended level caps of 40 and 50 require about 34,000 and 62,000 EXP to reach.
For the sake of fairness, the required levels of the skills in the Grimoires that you already have will be unaffected by the change, but I am heightening some of the later ones, so it doesn't seem like all of them are squeezed together in that tiny "endgame level" zone of 28~32. The highest level any one skill will require of you is 39, so bear in mind that the spellbooks will run out of things to teach you long before you tackle some of the optional bosses in the game.
Also, so, now that you've defeated the Saigyou Ayakashi, you are now allowed to allocate additional base stat points upon levelling up.
You get a fixed number of extra points that you are freely allowed to spend on any one of your seven stats, for each level. The amount depends on the level, but you'll get less and less per level as time goes on is the general idea.
Hanzo, Hating, Yugian, your characters are Level 12, so you each have 11 extra points.
Duke, your character is Level 11, so you have 8 extra points.
Due to the level cap increase, the total amount of extra points you get has also increased from 60
to 75.
Some item merchants also double as crafters; speak to Marisa for magical items, to Nitori for armor and weapons, and to Alice for other clothing. You require some basic materials to help them along, of course, and there is a tiny fee for each synthesis.
I've updated my Pastebin with some helpful files: http://pastebin.com/u/Taizen
The Characters page is slightly out of date at the moment however. Everything else should be okay.
Koishi Komeiji is now a random encounter. You have a 1% chance of encountering her at any place with encounters.
Unless you're matching her level (32) or more, then run. Her Magical Attack stat exceeds 500.
Sidequests are now able to be undertaken around Gensokyo. The first is one in which Letty attacks you with suicidal overconfidence. The second leads to an encounter with Fujiwara no Mokou. They have set requirements, rewards, etc. etc. etc. Rewards range from yen, to Grimoires, to experience points, to items.
Try not to make any more shopkeepers angry, okay? They will refuse to talk to you for either the remainder of the stage, or for five game hours
At least Reisen was nice enough to give you something as a bribe to shoo you away.
(At least one shopkeeper will attack you, and she is level 48.)

I've scheduled the next session for Sunday, July 1, at 13:00 CST. If you have prior engagements, and/or wish to change the time, please inform everyone else.
-Taizen

The Save File entry was updated.
26 hours? Stage 3? Better get a move on, you're still less than 30% done with the stage
I'm planning a special reward for player parties that clear the game within a certain amount of time. I dunno if the cutoff'll be 60 or 50 hours though.
All right, I wasn't even planning to have a boss fight for the Three Fairies after you raided Cirno's house. I had to drum up the enemy sheets on the fly, so I hope it was... hahahaha... balanced. Not too difficult.
But perhaps with all the oddities happening recently perhaps you shouldn't have expected to try to solo them and live.
Soloing one of them, sure! But not all three.
Just so you know, I'm also buffing enemy stats, because of the number of times the enemies would do a tiny amount of damage to you despite having attack stats in the 70 ~ 100 range.
Helping certainly is the boost to Levels 14 and 15 y'all just got, despite the Scarlet Devil Mansion's enemies' being level 13.
By the way, this isn't the first time this boss setup (healer, debuffer, attacker) will happen, so I encourage you to shoot the medic first.
Oh, and please keep a cap on the diversions :V
I think that Gamema Show thing that happened might've been longer than an actual game show on actual television.
Time is a cosmetic thing in the game, so don't assume that anything happens from it, please :V
And finally, remember that Examine is a viable command and doesn't take a turn :]
It might clue you into what the enemies are planning. Some are more obvious than others (Such as the Three Fairies spell,) but other cues are only given through Examine.
Please pick a date for the next session. Also note, that I have to cap each session at four hours now. Parents being parents >_>
The best days for me, Friday the 6th and Tuesday the 10th.
-
Friday's good for me.
-
Lily White isn't too difficult of a battle, yes?
Considering most normal people might instead be, say, Lv. 13 or so?
I'll make a note to nerf this. Your attack stats are buffed to the max and her defense is floored and one might say that she's still giving you a hard time :<
I also need to streamline my process really badly, don't I? We're on the thirteenth turn and this session lasted 2:30.
> The next best day for the continuation is Monday, the 16th.
> Is this okay?
-
Sure, 16th works for me.
And technically, only our defenses are buffed to the max.
Now if I had Superhuman, or we had Omniessence, then yeah, we'd be maxed.
As for the hard time, it's really just due to a lack of grimoires that resist/null/absorb/reflect most of her elements.
-
Changes are going around, just general balance things and mess.
Like the quirk that Tengu had a single-target Wind spell that was slightly weaker (but costed double) than the generic single-target 3rd-tier Wind spell, and Master Spark stopping at 50 power, a full 16 points below "Heavy" level damage.
Also I may or may not have started on an engine that an adaptation of this game would run on.
-
Is it too late for me to join this? :3c
-
Of course not; you just have to drum up three other friends/MoTK members/what-have-you to start a party.
It'll take me a bit to run two games concurrently, but it can be done.
The first party is halfway through the game, but they've been doing buttloads of side material.
Be warned that completing the game might take a while, they're about 50 hours in.
You might want to give me a day or two, though, because I'm almost done adding some brand new classes :)
-
I see :3 It's going to be hard for a newcomer like me to be able to get 3 other MoTKians to start a party with me though...
-
Well, the original party was the first three people to show interest, plus one friend.
You could invite people, or wait until someone else would like to join. I'll add a note to the thread title.
There we go!
-
Well, here's hoping more folks play, team 1's pretty much the bugtesters and such.
I myself being a helpful part of the development process, as well as a member of Team 1.
"Magician Suzu, at your service. And if you ask me, I'm surrounded by idiots."
-
Those of you playing the game should know who this is.

Done so we have a representation of what she is supposed to look like >_>
-
well this shenaniganry looks interesting
i suppose i'd be around and interested for the second party
provided i am allowed sufficient alcohol
-
You're in luck then, there's actually an alcohol consumable.
Only the Oni Class can avoid the negative effects though, being Oni.
Everyone else gets totally wasted.
-
Aw c'mon, even if we like drink only one fifth of it at a time? :P
EDIT: What about tengu? Many people forget they're very strong drinkers too :V
-
The Drunkenness status effect is something that the can't-hold-liquor classes suffer when consuming something that comes with it- there are several drinks later in the game that will restore SP or increase a stat at the cost of lowering your defense / accuracy / evasion / general coherence.
I'm compiling the data for the new classes, please wait warmly :>
-
Well, Oni are perpetually drunk, right? So they can't get drunk again. It's just common gensokyo knowledge.
(Also, it's more like a Mana Potion in other jRPGs. It just carries the Drunkenness Status Debuff. Like the alcohols in Live-A-Live.)
The first Alcohol, Tanuki Sake, can be purchased from the Wandering Merchant.
It restores around 60 SP, but gets you drunk quicker'n cheap beer. Oni however, are immune.
You guys lemme know when the eventual sessions for your party are gonna be, I'll sit in and watch things from the 4th Wall.
Suzu will too. "I look forward to seeing what you people will become. An Oni perhaps? Or perhaps one of those meddlesome Crow Tengu."
-
...wait alcohol is a thing and oni can drink it
oh my god yes
DEFINITELY count me in now :v
-
*note that nobody is allowed to be part of fairy class until a party beats the game
Stats in detail:

-
What the hell, I'm in for second slot too. You guys could use a guy who knows the ropes anyhow.
Tsukumogami yo.
-
So, that's three characters. A fourth, perhaps? It would be less than fair for me to play
-
I might be able to find a fourth, unno quite yet though. 'll see.
'lso BEHOLD THE MIGHT OF THE ONI.
-
As I suspected, you selected Oni. Well, it'll give me a chance to see the Oni Class in action.
-
Guess I'll be Magician then >:3
GLASS CANNON PATH GO hopefully in this game the mage won't get one-hit by a critical hit like DnD...;_;
EDIT: My character sheet is done (http://pastebin.com/Ncx7peP6). Did Hanzo get the equipment stats from his other save files? Cuz I don't see the equipment list anywhere :3c
-
I can vouch for Magician. Hell, I'm Slot 1's Magician!
I can tell you everything you need to know when the time is right. For now, strive for Lv3, you'll get a good spell then.
Though we really need a Medic. I can't stress this fact enough.
-
Fourth guy should be a medic, Yeah.
Every good team needs a healbi-I mean healer. I can work as a adhoc tank as well as a bruiser thanks to my base HP, but I don't think any of us can replace a good ol-fashion healing.
-
Yeah, I'm a Phys-specced Tsukumogami in this slot. (Stats speak for what type of object a Tsukumogami was.)
Modeled after one of Suzu's...'Experiments'. An Artificial Tsukumogami, made from a special sort of sword.
(Also one of only two successful attempts at making an Artificial Tsukumogami..)
EDIT: Uh. You actually have to work with Taizen to create the statsheet. Sorry about the confusion? ^^;
-
:3 I thought he only rolls stats
Well anyways I'm on an iPad right now instead of a real comp, so I'll finish up with Taizen later.
-
You can come here. http://client03.chat.mibbit.com/
Just key in #gensoquest for the channel you want to access, and presto. Me and Taizen are in there hammering stuff out right now.
-
Yeah, I'm a Phys-specced Tsukumogami in this slot. (Stats speak for what type of object a Tsukumogami was.)
Modeled after one of Suzu's...'Experiments'. An Artificial Tsukumogami, made from a special sort of sword.
OSHI- :ohdear:
-
Did someone call for Eirin?/ I'm better at hurting people then making them better..
I supose I can join. ^_^/ (I will find a way to stick giant needles in you though @_@)
-
Anyone has any idea how long Taizen's vacation is going to be? :V
-
Not sure, but just be patient man, we'll get started in due time.
-
I'll be back on the seventh :V
I told Chaore to tell you to drum up Shadoweh's stats, but I guess that's my job >_>
Well, Shadoweh, I don't know if anyone explained to you how character generation works yet, but I went and threw together some dice rolls for you:
HP + 2, SP + 3, PA + 2, PD + 9, MA + 4, MD + 2, AG - 7
HP + 2, SP + 1, PA - 1, PD + 10, MA - 3, MD - 10, AG + 7
-
Look at that first roll. I'd say that dice hate me is now an established fact. Anyone who complains about my bad rolls from now on except from me shall be shot :V
-
I keep screwing it up, even when I know it should be the right one, it just doesn't add up.
Plus, my internet has been acting up something fierce. :ohdear:
-
My character is done and sent in then. ^_^/ She will be the very best.
-
I keep screwing it up, even when I know it should be the right one, it just doesn't add up.
Huh?
-
The stats. I keep feeling like I input them wrong when I go to calculate 'em. :ohdear:
EDIT: Oh hey, looks like my connection's back up and going.
-
The stats. I keep feeling like I input them wrong when I go to calculate 'em. :ohdear:
Well, you can do it the hard way if you want :V
HP and SP are
Base + Level * sqrt( 11 * (Base + Level)) / 3
Other stats are
Actual S = 1 + (Base / 50) + Level * ((2*Base)+ Level) / 297
Effective S = sqrt( AS ^ 2 * Equipment )
EDIT: Oh hey, looks like my connection's back up and going.
Oh excellent! I'm still stuck out of state, so I suppose your internet fracas was of little effect to the session planning ._.
-
On the subject of session planning, tomorrow is perhaps the next best day, followed by... well, I'll find out.
If a majority of the members of either party can make it, great!
If a majority of the members of both parties can make it...
Well, I can try my hand at juggling two lines at once, but I can't guarantee an absence of... "network lag."
As for edits to the game, I have decided that certain Grimoires will resist status ailments as well.
Momiji's Grimoire comes with a resistance to sleep. This would be advantageous to use in the following boss for you Party 1 members as she will only use a certain insta-death HP-draining move if someone is asleep.
-
Now that I've been doing community service at school, I can only get on at about 9 PM forum time, and stick around (with a little downtime in between) for the next 6-7 hours or so on weekdays. Saturdays vary, but if you don't see me around 4 PM forum time then I should be gone and get back around 8-9 PM forum time or so. I can't do Sundays, that's when I have DnD sessions :P
-
Today good for you? because just about everyone's on mibbit for sessions. (With Slot 1 currently having one right now.)
-
Saturday will probably end up being the best day for me anyway >_>
-
I think I can do that.
-
My, that was unfortunate. Hopefully that won't happen again.
The next possible day is tomorrow, after 16:00 CST. After that, will be next week.
I'd really like to get all four of the new members in for their first session! *crosses fingers
-
What time is that in EST? I should be around for it. I just need to know when to be awake
-
16:00 CST is 17:00 EST, I believe.
-
@Taizen: That's around the time I'd be coming home if I'm not done with work at school early, so expect me to be up to an hour late. (Well actually it's not very likely that I wouldn't be done early, but just warning you just in case :P)
Also are you on daylight savings? If you do then it'd be in EDT instead, and that'd give me 1 more hour to get home ;o
-
16:00 CST is 17:00 EST, I believe.
this is correct.
I should be around by then unless i commit impromptu suicide
i will however probably not be drunk, sadly
-
Man, just woke up after a long snooze. What had me so wiped out you ask?
Well for starters, being awake since 7PM of Wednesday, then going to the state fair and walking all over kingdom come after I'd already been up a good 12 hours.
Slept shortly after getting home around 6-ish, then recently woke back up to finish a little project I started prior to going.
I present to you all, for your viewing enjoyment, GensoQuest Special (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-_UW5WZc4s)!
I figured I'd get back into doing little walfas vids, but this time in the GensoQuest universes!
-
Oh, cool. Perhaps skits based on the events in the sessions? :V
I'll be sure to add more humor to suit this.
-
Pretty much. But I think everyone else already provides enough humor.
-
It's like I'm looking into the future!
-
=3
Strike what I said last night. My dad overslept so I don't have to go work at school today ;o I'm pretty much free (with a few breaks in between) for the next 12 hours :3c
-
Shadoweh you DC'd.
-
If you plan on announcing that every time you're going to have to quit your day job. :3
THE POWER OF LOVE AND SPARKLES PREVAILS!
-
Well, what did y'all think? :V
I assure you, it gets more complicated (and difficult, Raitaki) later on
Oh, and to note, the Hakurei Shrine did not erupt into a firefight in the other file. In fact, the party just quietly left and the party continued without them. Great work, everyone!
-
ONE ILLUSION LASER STARTS EVERYTHING.
(that, and Kaeru moderately fooling around :3)
-
All right, I think the next best day is sometime later this week- sometime after Thursday. I'll see when.
Progress on the Fairy Class is slow, but present.
Also, I've made a note to make the upcoming boss in Stage 4 deliberately That One Boss. Lily White
was not meant to be That One Boss, you see.
On a sidenote, if this does become an actual game, I will manage to make it multi-language somehow
インデイス, エクスセルサ, コライウス, トラ, アルタイス, ワルヂン, ハイドロゴン, プリトゥス, ドミナ, マルシス
haha, spell names
-
After Thursday huh? Well, alright then. I have as much time as one could need. (Maybe too much.)
-
In regards to when the next best day was, I was horribly incorrect.
Today is actually a day off for me, and then tomorrow, I start a five consecutive day work-week. Sorry everyone! ._.
-
ok what time do we start
I have quite some free time today ;o
-
Um.... whenever a sufficient amount of people show up.
-
Meh, I really am going to go back to PM notifications to set up sessions >_>;
My availability has been cut down drastically due to school, so we might be restricted to Saturdays and Sundays now :ohdear:
Little in terms of changing the game, but I have virtually finished all of the plot-related aspects of Stage 4.
-
Yeah, PM-based stuff is better. We can catch timing easier that way.
-
All right, I'm afraid that the next best possible time would be tomorrow night, after 23:00 CST.
My schedule every week is probably going to look like this:
Monday through Friday: 08 - 12 at high school
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 12 - 14 at college, 18 - 20 at college
Tuesday, Thursday: 16 - 18 at college
Monday through Thursday, random days: 20 - 22 at work
Fridays, high possibility: (14 ~ 16) - 22 at work
Saturdays and Sundays, high possibility (14~19) - 22 at work
As you can imagine, this leaves me little time to do things like study and sleep, so Gensokyo Quest might be moved to a late night slot :/
It's either this, or go on hiatus / find a new parser :qq:
-
*chokes*
Nooooooooo
<-dude whose parents drag him to bed at like 10 PM CST
-
No joke. My parents make me go to bed at 9:30 >_>;
-
Now it is Antagonist Time.
-
Terribly sorry about not getting this out last time, it was late :qq:
The boss you've defeated has dropped a Blank Book, and a Comet Candy.
Your current Inventory looks like this. (http://pastebin.com/35MxekZe)
I've also updated your stats, because everyone that isn't Suzu hit level 30.
Shirou
+23 / + 8 / +15 / + 7 / / +10 / + 4
LV. 30 HP 746 / SP 374 / PAt 232 / PDf 194 / MAt 23 / MDf 126 / Agi 117
Kaeru
+19 / +13 / + 6 / + 5 / + 7 / + 7 / + 2
Lv. 30 HP 754 / SP 422 / PAt (221) / PDf 142 / MAt 228 / MDf 198 / Agi 73
Freyr
+21 / +11 / + 7 / + 6 / +3 / + 5 / +2
Lv. 30 HP 862 / SP 320 / PAt 228 / PDf 192 / MAt 76 / MDf 153 / Agi 81
(Shirou's level up is way better because of his catch-up with those 14 base points.)
> Momiji's Grimoire's skill Power raises Kaeru's PAtk 15%.
> Switching from Chen's Grimoire takes off the 10% Agility boost.
For level 31, you need
Character / Experience
Suzu / 1137
Shirou / 2087
Kaeru / 1777
Freyr / 2027
More information can be found on the updated Characters page, (http://pastebin.com/grMFbk5R) including status effect resistances and weaknesses. Spoiler: Kaeru's the only one who's weak to any statuses, explaining why she got tagged with Rage.
NOBODY ALLOCATED THEIR BONUS POINTS EITHER. PLEASE DO THAT.
Also, by POPULAR REQUEST, UPDATED SKILLS PAGE~! (http://pastebin.com/nic71nuW)
Comes with juicy information on VERITABLE BUTTLOADS of new skills. We have nearly 300 skills in the book now! Eheheh.
And I still have more to add because I'm SO LAZY.
Enemies will only start hitting the hundreds in EXP gains once you enter the Alternate Underground,
so uh, good luck with that.
-
Most of you might not know that GQ is currently on hiatus for now. Right now Taizen is busy with 'things'. So for now, listen up.
Even though GQ hasn't been finished by any party yet, Gensokyo Quest II is currently been developed. Being developed by Hanzo(who is in Party 1), GQ2 will be bigger than GQ1.
Two spin offs are also being made. Gensokyo Quest: Pirates and an Ace Attorney-like game(which is still being named), being created by yours truly. :D
That's all I have left to post for now. Remember, go to #gensoquest on https://www.mibbit.com/ for questions(or foolery, things do happen).
-
Ace Attorney GensoQuest?
Why is this the first I have heard of such a thing?
Hurrr. Anyway, I might not have time to actually run the game, but I can develop the Admin Interface(s)- like the console I use to streamline stat and damage calculation. This time, GUI-based rather than text.
I know Hanzo's practically going to need one for his, not sure how mathematical any other tangents would be.
Sorry for being as busy, people, but buying my own computer has been put off in favor of repairing my car ._.
For instance, I have worked every single day since Wednesday from some time (usu. 3 or 4, or 6) until 10:00, and will continue to until Monday. On the bright side, I'm getting paid.
If Gensokyo Quest ever happens to dissolve completely because I can't get my shit together I'll probably just post the whole of my notes and folders onto the Internet, despite my rampant doubt that anyone ever'd be able to pick up parsing from where I left off. Sorry, everyone.
-
Its alright. take yer time man. we'll be here when you get back.
*Pops in a copy of Borderlands 2.*
We'll be set for awhile. :derp:
-
Oh, hey, the topic's still alive.
Raise your hands if you still exist!
Yes?
Good!
Possible session time is coming up soon. (For once!)
The days are between 21 and 24 November.
Please notify me if any of these (except Thanksgiving,) are good for you.
I look forward to hearing from you. Heikiko no Fujiyo's getting lonely.
-
Heh, I oughta be good for those days. Suzu and X93 were starting to get bored. And when Suzu gets bored, she starts experimenting.
And that's not to say anything of 93.
("And just how was I to know you couldn't turn a DVD Player into an Artificial Tsukumogami?" I dunno, asking?)
-
i should be around, yes
-
YE-
*checks calendar*
Hmmm...I think I might be around 23 and 24...It depends, what time is it gonna be?
-
Perfect.
-
Yay you're back!
Yes I think I could make it.
-
@Raitaki
This is a very good question.
Parties please discuss amongst yourselves what day/time to meet. Thank you~
-
Anything from 11AM my time, to 7PM my time is good for me. As are almost any of those days save for thanksgiving.
-
Well, on more recent news, I might not be able to join unless it's before 2:00 PM or after 1:00 AM GMT-3 because of ~work~
-
Do you think it's possible for everyone to meet up at, say, 10:00 your time, then? :V
This is about 12:00 for me, 14:00 for Raitaki, and 13:00 for Hanzo.
-
Hmmmmm think so. Tomorrow good?
-
Tomorrow, less so. It appears as though I'll be out with friends for my birthday, and back past 22:00. Sorry :<
-
10:00? Yeah at that time I can be on :ohdear:
-
As I've been sharing with people I get off work for the week after 6pm EST, except Saturday. I'm totally busy for Friday, but I'm available the rest of the nights
-
Assuming Taizen was using his timezone, or one not far off, I don't think I can be on that late, so maybe Slot 2 will need to move the date ;_;
Maybe the 24th?
-
I apologize profusely about dropping out of the chat like that, today, I had really meant to get back in a timely manner.
The next possible day is going to be on Thursday, and- wait for it- between 12:00 and 16:00. (central time.)
I'm sorry, but now that vacation days are over the game'll have to work around my schedule. You know, again >_<
-
S'alright. I still dunno if it can be finagled with my schedule or anything though.
-
I'll be there for some time. At least 2 hours before I have class.
-
Sorry, I can't bro. I have college classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays ;_;
-
Next session times include Wednesday (tomorrow) and Thursday, from 13:00 onwards.
Be there!
