I lurked on here for a few pages a few months ago, but now I have the time to draw something... *determined face*

Actually this is just a coloured sketch. Because I still hate lineart with burning passion.

here for more Tenshi

Also known as why I should never draw clouds ever again. Originally the hands weren't going to be there but then I was like 'I MUST CONFRONT MY FEARS' and stuck them on at the last minute. It made the arms look wonky too~

Some critique in case you're interested.

-Her head is squashed. Try to draw her entire skull, you'll realise that the hair actually cuts into it.

-Eyes are too wide apart.

-The shading on the hair looks a little wonky; feels like you kinda just airbrushed it over. The lines are otherwise pretty good.
http://www.elfwood.com/farp/theart/maeryhair/maeryhair.html

Check this out for more help.

-Her arms are bent the wrong way. I can't imagine how painful it'll be for her. For starters you could try using a mirror as reference for the arms or a camera. If you can't do that, a reference pose works too. The shading there is also pretty wonky. How do I describe it...sharp? Maybe you're trying that newfangled "cell shading", what ever that is, but overall it doesn't fit the way you coloured the dress and skin. You're better off going with the airbrush.

-Her hands are too small. Basic anatomy dictates that hands should be as long (from middle finger to palm) as the distance between the eyebrows and chin. Smaller is fine, but definitely not this small.

-Dress doesn't seem to be wrong. Not glaringly so, at least.

-Shoulders look wonky. Do you know how they work?

-I presume the choice of light source is to the (image) left. You need to emphasise that more on the overall shading.

I think that's it, I'm not an expert, but that's what I think is wrong. Brush up in anatomy and it should help you greatly. Hope this helps.

@Pirate: Pirate! Nothing really to say, just first time I have seen you not on the irc chat and instead on here >.>;;

@ZellBell: To better learn anatomy going to life drawing classes and anatomy classes always helps the most, but the way I learned was by studying a few different books! They will help you a lot I am sure ;D

Along with going to anatomy classes and learning from books you could also take a sketchbook wherever you go if you don't already and draw the people/animals/things you see. Whether  it be during class, on the bus, in the park, or wherever seems most comfortable. Its also a fun way to learn imo.  :V

Thanks! I've never actually gotten critique before, so this is very helpful to start on my corrections-for-next-time. (Eheh... I'm always kind of daunted by anatomy novels and forget most of it). Well in my personal critique I mostly just go 'something is wrong here' but I either can't correct it because it's too far along or I don't know how to correct it  :colonveeplusalpha:

I can't go to life drawing classes and I don't even take art next year, so basically all my artistic skills(?) are built up by observation. I mean if I look at arms enough maybe I'll be able to draw them better?  :V

I mean if I look at real life examples of arms and practice drawing them in various poses by breaking down the anatomy into a structure which suits your style enough maybe I'll be able to draw them better?  :V

What, they asked for a cute ghost and you drew Yuyu instead of Kana Anaberal?

Savory, your simple, smooth style makes me paru, especially since I've only just gotten into digital drawing and now I have some actual experience with it. Never realized how hard a look it is to accomplish.

I wonder if we with Kaze should make our own threads, like "More derp from Delfi" and "Boneless Senshi creatures". :3
Talking about Boneless creatures  :V, yesterday I tried to draw a sketch skeleton and muscles to train drawing anatomy and using it as base I draw a Ran, the muscle one looks like a corpse after receiving a fatality :P

And here is a Yuugi with a sketch background:

Oh by the way, is anyone here good at backgrounds? I'm tired of white backgrounds but I don't really know where to start to achieve scenery porn.

I don't need art lessons or life drawing classes to get better. There are enough resources on anatomy on the next. If you learn the muscles that make up the body you'll understand the shape that limbs make.

I wouldn't call myself good but if you are just starting out on backgrounds I would recommend painting them fast and keeping them simple. Overcomplicated backgrounds can screw up a picture, especially if all you want to do is get rid of white.

Here are some I painted, each took me around 10 minutes and were used purely to change up the background a bit.

Eh, I don't mean simple backgrounds like that. I mean REAL backgrounds. Grass, dirt, sky, buildings. That sort of thing.

Cool stuff though.

These are just basics to help you get started, the last example I provided can easily be built up into something more complicated (ie. a 'real' background) but you should practice simple stuff like this before detailing it too much otherwise it can quite easily look terrible. Walk before you run and all that.
