>Does she seem to have left herself any openings in her defenses?

>Her sword can't cover all of her, and she is extremely close to you at the moment, putting her in range of nearly anything you might care to try. You may be able to take advantage of her confined position, but you expect she could parry a direct strike without difficulty.

>Well our free arm isn't damaged. Let's put it to good use.
>Spin to face her and spring-sidestep with her, keep her in range as long as possible. Reach out with our free hand and grab that knife stuck in her arm.
>Slash out with our saber towards her eyes, that'll draw the attention of her sword.
>With the kunai in our tail, offer a strong slash at her closest wing.

>Slash out with our saber towards her eyes, that'll draw the attention of her sword.
>With the kunai in our tail, offer a strong slash at her closest wing.

>You turn with the tengu as she banks around you and reach an arm out to grab the handle of the knife while slashing at her face with your sword. She predictably parries your blade and does try to twist her body away from you, but there's simply too little room. Your fingers grab the handle of Miyuki's weapon and yank it free.
>The tengu lets out a muted hiss as you rip the knife roughly from her flesh, but is surprisingly stoic considering and barely slows. You whip your tail around and lash at a wing with your kunai, but your positioning makes it hard to accurately catch a moving target and it is a glancing blow. You see a few feathers fall free from your slash, but think you only grazed the actual muscle. The tengu continues to dash for the last couple feet before the stairs.
>Behind, you hear Chisato freeing herself and her weapon from the net, cursing furiously under her breath all the while. Ishi also seems to be running in pursuit of the tengu, though she's far too slow to actually catch up with the two of you.

I might add, it sticks in my craw to attack a retreating foe, but since this girls' our only hope of negociating with Aya and forcing her to leave, I do what I must.

>"This Seeker never gives in until there's no hope left!"
>Hurl our kunai at the same wing we slashed at before. Maybe if we knock her out of the air, it'll stun her enough to let us catch her.

>You make a determined declaration as you turn and hurl your kunai at the tengu's wing. Unfortunately, both the wing and its owner are moving and the wing muscle itself presents a narrow target. Your shot misses your main target and passes through the body of the wing, though you hear a thin cracking as it does and several feathers fall free. The tengu falters slightly to the side, landing a little awkwardly on one foot, but resumes running with only a slight loss of momentum.
>"Come back here you overgrown feather duster!" you hear Ishi yell as she does her best impression of a dash.

>Get in close to the wall and continue following the tengu.

>You can't see at the moment with the tengu herself in the way, but you think it would have landed either in or on the stairs.
>You chase after the fleeing tengu, nearly keeping pace with her as she crosses the last foot or two to the stairs.

>"Ishi! Wrench!"

>"One clonk on the noggin coming up!" the diminutive gearhead cries with no small measure of enthusiasm.
>"No, Ishi!" you hear Chisato say. "Not the-"
>Her words are cut off by the sound of the wrench rockets flaring to life again. The tengu glances back over her shoulder with a look of concern.

>You are. Maybe this wasn't such a hot suggestion, after all....
>You stop and turn to face the barreling ratchet as it spins end over end towards you. ...you might want to duck!

>Hit the deck!

>You hit the deck, dropping low as quickly as you can manage in hopes of staying clear of the careening bludgeon. You both hear and feel the wrench zoom past you, ruffling your hair and leaving a wash of heat in its wake. Too close for comfort...
>"Watch where you're aiming, you pineapple head!" Chisato snaps.
>You hear heavy thud, accompanied by a pained grunt from the tengu ahead of you.

>Glance up at the tengu.

>You glance up at the tengu, who has managed to gain another foot or two on you while you were busy ducking. The wrench seems to have hit her solidly in the small of her back, despite some apparent evasive maneuvers. You can see it twirling away on the rebound, rockets falling dark again.

>She's got mettle, that's for sure.
>You get back to your feet as the tengu rallies. You can hear Ishi still running in your direction, though no one else. The wrench does another somersault upwards as it spends the last of its momentum.
>With your face, maybe... Though in fairness, you might have a small window before it hits full speed in which grabbing would be plausible. Outside of that, it would take a lot of luck.

>"Ishi, can you stop it coming back at us?"
>Maybe that hurt her enough to slow her march up the stairs. Get after her again, try and tackle her if we get close enough. Keep our saber for defense ready in the event she slashes at us.
>If we fail to catch her before she gets up the stairs, or if she takes to wing again, yell, "Tell your captain to find easier things to steal! This ship doesn't roll over for anyone!"

>"Nope!" she answers cheerfully.
>You quickly move in after the tengu, though climbing stairs in your current condition proves even less pleasant than swift movement on solid ground. The tengu is gathering herself even as you close and turns a little towards you, bringing her sword between the two of you as she tries to get her footing straight again. Her face is still caught in a grimace.
>The wrench's rockets loudly burst into action again, sending it spiraling back towards you!

>Why doesn't THAT surprise me.
>Are we close enough to grab it before it gets up to speed?

>Stupid kappa gizmos.... Reliably unreliable.
>It's decently high in the air at the moment after flying up on the rebound. You might be able to grab it if you jumped, though your leg mightn't handle that very well at the moment, and it would probably put you into the tengu's sword range if you tried it. Though she may be more concerned with leaving than slashing at you.

>Maybe it'll put us in harm's way. But that's better than letting that thing fly back at our friends.
>Drop the knife in our left hand and jump for that wrench.
>Keep our saber out defensively. And if we hear the sound of a sword slicing through the air, return our attention to it and defend ourselves as best as we can.
>In the event we miss the thing or it tears free of our grasp, "Incoming, girls! Ishi, cover the humans!"

>You make a quick judgement call, then drop your knife and leap for the rapidly accelerating wrench. A sharp pain stabs into your leg as you spring off from it, and you strangle a gasp as you reach an arm out towards the spiraling implement. You keep your sword extended towards the tengu and hope she doesn't try to take advantage of what is doubtlessly going to leave an opening no matter what you do. Your eyes trace the wrench's path as it swerves. ...there!
>You snap your fingers closed as the wrench's handle passes near to your hand and feel them wrap around something solid. Got it! Then your eyes widen as you feel yourself yanked backwards by the wrench's momentum. And bloody hell it's hot!
>"What are you crazy?!" Chisato yells.
>You see the tengu bound up the stairs several at a time, wings spreading on each leap.

>"When it hits something!" Ishi says helpfully. "Or runs outta gas."
>While the wrench's wild flight is muted in your hands, your jump is pulled further backwards by the force of its thrust. There's no way you're landing straight from this, and you're pretty sure your hand starting to burn.
>"Just let it go!" you hear Miyuki cry.
