I know I've threatened it for a while and I've finally got it online.  HatOnline is now in open beta.  What's HatOnline?  Well it's only the most headgear complete game out there!  Right now we're currently opening the server for live testing.  Things are definitely not 100% yet and we're still adding and tweaking stuff.  If you want to join in just follow these easy instructions!

Overview
HatOnline is a semi-private Ragnarok Online server for the MotK community.  The goal is to strive for perfect parity with the current kRO Renewal client and content.  While most servers like to screw with the game and add in all sorts of random nonsense, we believe the core game is being sacrificed as a result.  There's also a lot of things eAthena has done wrong over the years and we would like to pride ourselves on being the most accurate reproduction of the core kRO game.

That being said there's still some things the base game does wrong, so we're not above changing those things as long as it doesn't change the core gameplay.  Rates are set at 77x XP and 99x item drop to remove much of the tedium in building a new character.  We've added in support for the official cash shop items and set the exchange rate at 100k zeny per 100 cash points.  Episode 13 content and third job content will not be enabled for the time being.  Things that have historically been broken, such as bad MVP behavior and other omissions are also getting worked on to bring the server in line with the official RO servers.

So join us, and help us make this a new addition to the MotK community.  Oh, and if you join now you get a free hat of your choosing!  Any hat :3c

Windows
1:  Download Ragray (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/hatonline/Ragray/) and install
2:  Download the client (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/hatonline/HatOnline-Client-1-17-2011.zip) and FULL patch (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/hatonline/updates/HatOnline-Patch-1-24-2011-FULL.zip) (not incrementals!) update packages.  Extract them into your Ragray installation folder.
3:  Run patcher.bat in your Ragray installation folder and let it patch your files
4:  Launch HatOnline.exe and it should be working

THIS IS THE ONLY CURRENTLY SUPPORTED METHOD.  IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH PASSWORDS OR LAUNCHING REINSTALL YOUR CLIENT FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY.  I WILL NOT BE FIXING ISSUES FOR PEOPLE WITH NON-STANDARD SETUPS.

Linux/Mac (thanks resident nerd wolf Momiji)
Please see here for setting up Wine for your respective distribution. (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,5902.0.html)

1:  Download all of the installation files from here (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/hatonline/Ragray/), and install Ragray by running part01.exe.
2:  Download the client (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/hatonline/HatOnline-Client-1-17-2011.zip) and FULL patch (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/hatonline/HatOnline-Patch-1-16-2011-FULL.zip) (not incrementals!) update packages.  Extract them into your Ragray installation folder.
3:  Following your distribution's instructions, install xdelta3 for your particular distribution.
4:  In your Ragray installation folder, run the following commands:
Code: [Select]
xdelta3 -d -s data.grf data.grf.xdelta data.new
xdelta3 -d -s rdata.grf rdata.grf.xdelta rdata.new
rm data.grf
rm rdata.grf
mv data.new data.grf
mv rdata.new rdata.grf
4:  Change the OS version RO runs under.  In winecfg, go to Applications, click 'Add application', browse to your Ragray installation folder, and open HatOnline.exe.  Select it in Applications, and set it's Windows version to "Windows 2000".
5:  Reconfigure your server setting.  Browse to your Ragray folder, into the "data" folder, and open up clientinfo.xml.  Change
Code: [Select]
<address>henrietta.shrinemaiden.org</address> to
Code: [Select]
<address>72.14.189.207</address> and save/close the file.
6:  Configure iptables.  Make sure you have iptables installed by opening a terminal and running
Code: [Select]
sudo iptables -V It should respond with the program version.  If you don't have it, check with your distro's documentation on how to install it.  If it's working, run this in the terminal:
Code: [Select]
sudo iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -d 55.0.0.0 -j DNAT --to 72.14.189.207Open HatOnline.exe and see if you can register and connect properly.
7:  Add your iptables rules to your system startup.  You'll be adding the rules to your respective distro's custom startup file.  For Ubuntu it's /etc/rc.local, for Redhat it's /etc/rc.d/rc.local, and for Gentoo it's /etc/conf.d/local.start.  Open your respective file as administrator, and add this to the bottom of it:
Code: [Select]
iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -d 55.0.0.0 -j DNAT --to 72.14.189.207and save/close the file.  If you reboot and can still access HatOnline, everything worked!

Registration
First time you login, put down username_m or username_f (not "username" but the username you want), _m for male and _f for female gender, for your login name, then every time after that login with just your desired username.  To get your free hat just send me a PM with your character name and your desired hat (link to it from http://ratemyserver.net so I can have an item_id please!)

Handy tips
Absolute first thing you should do is type /notrade, /notalkmsg, and /notalkmsg2, to enable friend requests and trading and public chat.  To talk to everyone on the server type @main on to turn on main chat then you can just type @main whatever to talk.  Here's a list of enabled commands for people familiar with it.

@main <on|off|message> - Turn on or off main chat or send a message on main chat
@autoloot <percent> - Autoloot items dropped at <percent> rate or lower
@autotrade - Accept all trade requests
@showexp - Show XP earned per kill
@rates - Server rates
@uptime - Server uptime
@exp - Current XP/Job XP amount
@mobinfo <mob> - Info on a monster
@iteminfo <item> - Info on an item
@whodrops <item> - Who drops x item (sorted by highest drop rate)
@time - Show server time
@petrename - Rename your pet
@party <name> - Create a party
@mail - Bring up mailbox
@auction - Bring up auction window
@duel <player> - Duel someone (use @accept/@reject)
@noask - Ignore all trade/friend/chat requests
@feelreset - Reset remembered maps for Star Gladiators

It took a couple of hours playtime to get a brand new character up into the 80s, the effort required to get a decent character is really minimal.  Plus we plan on doing group/party stuff all the time.

Great, this thread piqued my curiosity about RO so I went to the site.

I don't understand the Ragray at all. Am I supposed to save them all in a file then run them?

With a server name like HatOnline I kinda expect a special hat that's 3 hats stacked one on top of another. Also, is it one hat per character or just one hat per account?

One per account for now.

Are you planning making this fully public in the future with gtop stuff and voting blah blah blah?
Title: Re: HatOnline is now open for beta testing!
Post by: helvetica on December 28, 2010, 05:12:12 AM
Gtop?  Voting?  Son I am confused.

As for "public" it's going to be open to any MotK member and you can feel free to refer anyone but I'm not going to advertise it on RMS or whatever.

Anyway, it's good to see such interest in here! I'll be running a Bard (and a merchant, for overcharge purposes).

RMS? I presume its RateMyServer or something like that.

So hold on, I'm a bit lost.

So this isn't a server where it's going to be exposed to mass media through means like gtop100, ragezone, and xtremetop100? This isn't a server where random shit like accessories are added to the game to the point where clients crash 24/7? There is no drama, corrupt admins, or wh0res who sell themselves to GMs/Admins to get free stuff?

Sorry if my tone is condescending but I've never had good experiences with private servers for the most part.

Yes I am totally corrupt and inept at running a community. ::)

And your tone is severely condescending.  Noone's forcing you to play.

I'm having a little bit of trouble with the patcher. Maybe it's correct, maybe it's not but it kind of irks me (and I don't really want to waste time waiting for anything that won't download -_-)

(http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/88/wtfro.th.png) (http://img515.imageshack.us/i/wtfro.png/)

The fact that the green bar isn't moving at any moment makes me feel uneasy. Or is it really patching and I just have to wait? (200mb should take that long as well...)
For the record, I am running it as admin, trying it to run on compatibility mode with 2000 and XP

I know that the last resort makes it everything run smoothly (tested it so), but like you said, it unables me to get the newest patches.

Could be set to start as early as this evening. Very much considering being a hunter given the fact that none were mentioned and I always wanted to try one. Still,
Anyway, it's good to see such interest in here! I'll be running a Bard (and a merchant, for overcharge purposes).
Yeah, I feel kinda guilty not offering support services when I originally played, and since a couple people were considering battle priest, I could go full support priestie so long's I get some peeps to mob mash with. I'll only be around for a little bit on any given day, though. Aw, man! Nostalgia scud missile inbound!

You're not the only one with UAC issues but it doesn't make sense because I'm playing fine on Windows 7 with UAC enabled.  We're looking into it.

EDIT: First in-game bug report, @showexp is not showing exp gained.

Try running it in Windows Media Player.

So I removed RO and reinstalled it with TSO's instructions. The patcher window looks like the one in TSO's screenshot, but @showexp still doesn't work. I had to change the chat options so it shows exp. Was that added sometime between now and a year ago, I don't remember being able to change what appears in the chat window before.

I'm not sure why, but I haven't been able to log in since my initial account creation last night. No matter what I try with my username (with and without an _m suffix) or variations of passwords I use, I haven't been able to get in. I think I may have mistyped my password the very first time I logged in, but I don't think there is a way to check, is there?

I hope it's still as fun as I remember.

edit: Yes it is. Thank you very much for hosting this server!

How do we go about reporting bugs? Should we state them in this thread?

The Hallucination status ailment causes my game to get 1 frame per 5 seconds. I check online and it says that newer computers get that problem. I'm gonna have to avoid monsters with that ability. I can use /effect to avoid that, but it also removes every other special effect in the game.

Ok the patcher is dead, don't use it anymore.  The "alternate" instructions are the ONLY instructions for the time being.

I will be setting up a new client package soon, this will be the ONLY package I will support.  I will not break existing installs but I will not support them anymore.  So if something breaks I won't fix it, you will have to try to reproduce it on the new package.

So for now launch Ragexe.exe (for patcher users) directly or hatonline.exe (for alternate instruction users).

IF YOU ARE HAVING ANY ISSUES SUCH AS WITH PASSWORDS OR LOADING THE CLIENT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THIS PAGE WITH A CLEAN INSTALL.  I WILL NOT BE SUPPORTING BUGS OR FIXING ANY ISSUES FOR PEOPLE WITH NONSTANDARD SETUPS.  PERIOD.

Yeah, the patcher-based setup still works but I am not going to support issues with it.  If you're having a problem and you're not using the instructions listed on the OP, I'm going to tell you to use those instructions and come back to me if you can still reproduce it.

There's a lot more Crusaders than I expected, I was in a party where almost half the people were Crusaders. Most of us All of us were almost completely useless, the most useful thing I did was Shield Bashing any enemy that got too close to our ranged DPS to knock them away.

Also, the original post says that you you will change things that you think the game does wrong without changing the gameplay. Can I ask what changes you have planned?

I haven't gotten to play very much since I'm getting ready to go back to school and stuff but I did at least manage to turn Sage last night and am stationed in Louyang for now.

And Crusaders really? They tend to be one of the less popular classes from what I usually see so that's kind of a surprise.

Also, the original post says that you you will change things that you think the game does wrong without changing the gameplay. Can I ask what changes you have planned?
Well, things that eAthena gets wrong compared to the official servers.  Things like MVP behavior, etc.

So what's the server population looking like at the moment? I see 13 people in E-Mouse's screenie which is a lot more than I expected.

E-Mouse's screenshot isn't even from our server.  We generally have 15-20 people on during primetime and growing.  Hopefully once I get a new client package out more will come.

I figured out what the mysterious password-eating bug was.
If you remap any LETTER key that is used in your password, you will no longer be able to log in. The remapping screws up the password entry. TGB.
Blowing away the UserKeys_s.lua in your data folder will reset your key mappings and you can log in again.

The IRC rule was mostly because there was like 12 thousand people fighting over the same name and we had some really really retarded people who made a huge shitstorm over ownership of nicks like "Reimu".

Me it's just a personal pet-peeve.  I name my characters after animu people but I have a unique nick I know I'll respond to.  As long as I have the same for you I don't care, but if I don't I get annoyed :|

Yeah.. 8 of my 9 characters are named after Touhou characters. I'm usually just roaming around the game solo, so I hope that doesn't cause any problems.
I'm definitely enjoying the high experience and drop multipliers. In merely a week, I  have seen and explored more areas than I was ever able to before. Thanks again!

A few questions:
-Does this server feature the third set of jobs? Or are you "done" after maxing out a transmigrated character?
-What are maximum job levels for Gunslinger and Super Novice?  I don't want to screw up those builds again.

NOTICE:
We've added a color change NPC but it looks like there's some problems with it.  Do NOT use palette 4.  Depending on what class you are, you will crash everyone on screen and lock yourself out of your account if it's in your first 3 character slots.

Palette choice 4 will be removed ASAP but until then please refrain from using it on any character.  If you do it intentionally expect my wrath.

Recommend you set DBs and BBs to display the players' name of whoever broke 'em, to cut down on people trolling lowbie fields. Wolves is an incredibly good map for a first-class melee character to level at, and it's loaded with a bunch of DB'd critters.

Also, are you still handing out hats? :P

I had a lot of fun playing this last night. Hopefully when the password issue gets sorted I'll be playing a lot more.

EDIT: To be specific, the issue I have is that after I exit and try to sign back in, I get a "wrong ID or password" message. If I reboot my comp, I get "cannot connect to server", unless I run iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -d 55.0.0.0 -j DNAT --to 72.14.189.207 as root in Terminal before starting the game, each time. TSO was kind enough to get in the console and set my password so I could log back in last night, but it seems it didn't stick.

I remember setting up Nethack had some bumps at first, too, so I'm sure this'll get sorted.

The password bug I can't seem to track down.  As for the iptables thing you have to do that every time as from what I understand wine has some strange bug and it's using that IP rather than the one listed in the client.  I would suggest putting it in your rc.local or your distribution's equivalent.

Copy-pasting one line into Terminal and hitting "Enter" isn't a big deal to me (I did add the command to my rc.local in /etc but it didn't seem to stick). It's the password thing that's troublesome, because for now it means that if I want to play, I need to track you down to get you to set the hash for me, which can't be too fun for you.

Now, normally I would just log into the game and stay logged in, but I do need to take my laptop to classes from home and such. So, best of luck tracking down that bug.

Stat reset is going to be implemented on a sliding scale, 10mil for first reset, 20 for second, etc, going up exponentially.  This is meant to be a one-time service to fix a build messup or to respec for a different role.  It's not meant to be a replacement for making alts.

With the rates are, it's still easier to make a throwaway alt to leech pure forger/potter builds rather than get them up with a battle build then stat/skill reset for crafting.  Really the idea is to allow people to fix bad builds, or to make major role changes like say switch from Spear LK to 2H Parry LK.  Or when PvP starts up, allow people to reroll their PvE characters to WoE/PvP builds without having to start all over again.

As for headgear, there's no longer a concern about them being "OP".  The standard right now is to make our cash shop match iRO's cash shop (with exceptions like no Battle Field Manuals, adventure packs, etc).  Obviously really good headgear will be priced accordingly, so don't be surprised if you see some hats costing upwards of 5mil.

@mail will be removed as soon as I can implement an item to replicate its functionality.

These are the some of the most sensible updates so far. I like the expensive scaling stat reset. While I myself always thought that not having a stat reset NPC is incredibly stupid, I always agreed on that if there's one, it should be super expensive. (Like on that first server I've played on, with 1/1/1 rates. Not to mention, it's kind of a relief for new players, who don't know that much about builds and such, and a relief to those who like to use a "grind build" for leveling.)

Keeping updated with the newest patches is also a very good thing, most private servers don't tend to do that, what is quite the fail.

With these, I even considering joining some time in the future. Keep up the great work!

Well to be honest 10mil isn't that hard to get, but it is significant enough of an effort to make it more than just an automatic decision.  Skill resets aren't really as big of a deal mostly because changing skillsets rarely changes your build that drastically.  Like if I skill reset my SBK Sin it won't be a very good DD Sin (although it'd make a decent SBlow/Katar Sin).  You can't go from a battle build to a pure crafter with just skills.

As for keeping content up to date, we're still not adding new world content for the time being.  eAthena doesn't support it on the stable branch and the mob changes to the old world would be a massive upheaval without third jobs.  This is merely to keep up to date with things like hats and so forth (and to steal the current kRO login screen).

A patcher client is in the works.  I already have the infrastructure to push incremental updates now.
Title: Re: HatOnline is now open for beta testing!
Post by: Solais on January 17, 2011, 03:55:21 PM
So the New World isn't even in Stable release? Then it's understandable if you don't add it. I worked with trunk before, it's a mess.

My main thing with keeping the kRO client updated is that if people don't update regularly, there is a kind of bug that will keep popping up and crashes the patcher. Happened to me before when I haven't updated for a year, and that's why I always keep a RO version updated on my PC, even if I don't play it for years. Keeping the client/server updated kinda forces the players to update, I guess.
Title: Re: HatOnline is now open for beta testing!
Post by: helvetica on January 17, 2011, 05:07:28 PM
Renewal is split off on its own branch and then there's an unsupported addon pack called 3CeAM that's basically eAthena but focused on keeping parity with Renewal.  Trunk/stable still has the pre-renewal mobs/skill setups.

We're using trunk but I try to stay a few revisions behind unless something major pops up.  They just now released hexes for the new (newer than 7/30/2010 lol) clients but unfortunately there's been a packet change so I can't use them yet.  As soon as support pops up on trunk I'll update to it.

I'm putting together our own patcher infrastructure.  I'll maintain a client up to kRO latest and make patches based off of that.  There will be two patches I'll release, a cumulative patch from Ragray 7-30 to current, and then incremental patches.  If you're a few patches behind the patcher will be able to catch you up.  The cumulative is so we're not wasting a bunch of bandwidth pushing 10-15 patches when I can just merge it down to one.
Title: Re: HatOnline is now open for beta testing!
Post by: Solais on January 17, 2011, 06:00:42 PM
That's quite the idea, never seen it done before. Though I guess eAthena changed a lot since I last used it 3 years ago. From what I've seen, the main stuff is still the same, but somehow it seems cleaner, yet full of new things. I believed that Renewal will replace the old one eventually. I guess not everyone likes the change? Not that the Renewal is still finished on kRO, they're preparing for the "second phase" what is mainly fixing all the bugs.
Title: Re: HatOnline is now open for beta testing!
Post by: helvetica on January 17, 2011, 07:12:29 PM
The problem with renewal is they redid a lot of the old mobs to match the new 3rd jobs, which aren't stable yet.  So it doesn't make sense to push the renewal mobs until those are ready for production.

3CeAM is really for people who are too impatient to wait for them to be stable and want them hacked in NOW.  eA will eventually update to renewal, and maintain a separate "classic" branch for people who don't want it.  If anything we'll probably have our own custom eA build depending on what we decide we want to fix (like position lag and buggy firewall behavior oh god).

I did the update, and got an "incorrect username and/or password" error. Thinking there was some conflict in the patching, I went ahead and did a clean reinstall using the new patches.  Same outcome.

Am I doing something wrong here? And what's this "Hash" thing about? I'm afraid you've lost me there.

Oh yeah, you may get a wrong password error, this is fine.  It's actually the "right" hash now.  Just let me know and I'll update it.
Server-side all passwords are stored in an encrypted hash form for better security.  The original client I launched HatOnline with, for whatever reason, inserted random characters into the password string so when it was hashed it was different than the hash you would have gotten with just your password.  Normally this isn't a problem but it did it inconsistently, it would randomly decide to send the "right" password (or wrong, depends on whatever mood its in), and thusly you'd get locked out of your account.

I rebuilt the client EXE and it looks to have solved it (as it sends the right hash now), problem is a lot of people would have registered with the bad hash and not realized it until now.  You're not doing anything wrong, it's just fixing the issue (hopefully for good).  Just let me know your login name (PM preferrably) and I'll look through the server logs and update your password to reflect what your client is sending.

New patch, this is mandatory.

Incremental patch from 1/17 client (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/hatonline/updates/HatOnline-Patch-1-24-2011.zip)
Use this if you've already updated to the most recent client package.  If you followed the installation instructions listed after 1/17, this is what you need.

Full patch from clean install (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/hatonline/updates/HatOnline-Patch-1-24-2011-FULL.zip)
Use this if you haven't updated yet or want to start from a clean install.  Follow the instructions in the OP for installing from scratch.

If you do not update you will experience crashes or error messages.  Items are in circulation that were just added in the latest GRF update (specifically Rikter's Abysmal Knight hat).

A patching client is in the works to make this a lot less painful.  Should have it done this week.

Any hat for the most part.  We reserve the right to deny a hat request if it's determined to be overpowered and/or not working.

Just search through the hat listings on RateMyServer and pick whatever suits you.  Be aware a lot of the 54xx ID hats may not be in our client.

If you gain a certain amount of players, will you promise to give us a Reimu Ribbon and Marisa Hat?

If you can get me sprites for such a thing maybe.  I'm not exactly an artist.  I know how to add such things though.

I dunno, if people are interested I may be coaxed into updating the server to latest GRF content and doing a reset.  I've been kind of interested in going at it again, we didn't really get anywhere.  Guess it's up to you guys to see how many people would be willing to play.  Unfortunately my interest in MMOs comes and goes in spurts, and my lack of interest coincided with a lot of people taking extended breaks for school/etc.

kinda understand what you mean about 3 months ago my faction/guild in another game was kicking (mostly since i try to liven things up) but after the final exams week(me doing nothing), boom back to 2 actives and everyone suddenly went on hiatus...

People don't seem to play on the server at all now. I never really got to do anything with the stuff I bothered to actually hunt. I wouldn't mind playing again if people joined up or others got active again. Would a reset make me need to have to redo all those evil evil quests for Nameless (Which I never really got to go to)?

Also what was the rewards for that event even going to be?

To be honest I completely forgot about the event.  I guess I'll have to think about it.

Well we don't have to do a reset, we could just use our existing characters I guess or you can reroll if you want to.

I wouldn't really want to have to level a Knight or Sniper again and if there was a reset I probably wouldn't bother to play again.

To be fair, the last round wasn't much of a challenge once the MVPs desynced. Chaore, Rikter, and I gained quite a few levels just from punching them to death, pretty much. :S

I just bothered to log on and I am getting to it just fine. Did you update ragray before installing the hat online client?

Also I don't even remember the build I wanted for my Snipers stats.

You're not banned and the server is up and I'm able to login.  You need to follow the install instructions EXACTLY from the OP.  If you don't I can't guarantee if it'll work or not.

You type <your desired username>_m or _f depending on which gender you want, and then afterwards just login with your username, no _f or _m.

You need to wait, your constant flooding caused the server to block all registrations.  Your account didn't even register yet.  Be patient and try again in a few hours, if it still doesn't work I'll investigate further.

Registrations should work again.  I forced a restart of the server since it didn't seem the flood timer was going away.
