The Complex of Horrors - OOC Thread
« on: July 12, 2009, 06:07:28 PM »
What is Paranoia?

I will let Paranoia describe itself:

Quote
May I be of assistance?

-Sure. Why don?t you tell me how this roleplaying
game works?

I?m sorry, citizen. That information is not available
at this time.

-Huh? Most games are really eager to teach you
the rules.

Not PARANOIA. In PARANOIA you don?t know
the rules. You don?t know who your enemies are.
You don?t know how your equipment works. You?re
never sure why you?re doing anything. One thing you
do know: Everyone is out to get you.
Ignorance and fear; fear and ignorance. These are
your watchwords.

-Uhh... The back cover says something about a
computer.

-In PARANOIA you play a Troubleshooter in
service to The Computer. Trust The Computer! The
Computer is your friend! You are The Computer?s
trusted agent and protector of Alpha Complex, The
Computer?s underground city of the far future.

-Why am I a Troubleshooter?

You turned in a friend for treason. The Computer
had him executed for betraying Alpha Complex. The
Computer rewarded you for your loyalty.
Now you root out all traitors and apprehend or
execute them. You uncover corruption among The
Computer?s servants and turn them in to Internal
Security. You find trouble, and you shoot it.

-What?s a ?traitor??

A traitor is a malevolent human citizen who has
betrayed his friend The Computer and seeks to
destroy The Computer, Alpha Complex, humanity
and life as we know it. You must unmask and destroy
all traitors. Watch out! Traitors are everywhere!
Mutants are traitors. These genetic freaks have
uncontrollable abilities they selfishly use for their own
advancement, rather than to serve Alpha Complex.
You must subdue or eliminate them.
Members of secret societies are traitors. In
organizations unsanctioned by The Computer they
conspire irresponsibly to undermine the good order
of Alpha Complex. You must destroy them.
By the way... you are a mutant, and a member of
a secret society. You are a traitor.

-Wait, I?m a traitor?

That is correct. Your fellow Troubleshooters would
be eager to unmask you as a traitor and execute you.
You work with many Troubleshooters. They all carry
powerful weapons.

-Let me get this straight. My job is to hunt and kill
traitors. I work with other people who have the
same orders. They all want to kill me?

Not quite. They all want to kill traitors. They don?t
know you?re a Commie mutant traitor. Yet.
If they find out?
They?ll apprehend or kill you, as any right-thinking
citizen would. Of course, if you convict them of
treason first, The Computer will have them executed,
and you may survive. Note, though, false accusations
of treason are themselves treason.

-So I want to prove they?re traitors before they can
prove I?m a traitor. If I don?t, I die?

Precisely. Dead traitors cannot testify to their own
innocence, or to your guilt. It is convenient to be the
last Troubleshooter on your team left alive.
The good news is, Troubleshooters routinely get
shot, stabbed, incinerated, mangled, poisoned,
blown to bits, and occasionally stapled, so you have
many opportunities to ensure your teammates meet
their just end.
Stay alert! Trust no one! Keep your laser handy!

-...Are you sure this will be fun?

Certainly, citizen! Fun is mandatory. The Computer
says so, and The Computer is your friend. Do you
doubt The Computer? Doubting The Computer is
treason.

-Uh! No, certainly not. If The Computer says fun is
mandatory, then this certainly will be fun. Only a
Commie mutant traitor could believe otherwise.

Excellent! You?re getting the idea. As a sign of
its trust, The Computer promotes you to Security
Clearance RED. Welcome to PARANOIA.

Paranoia is a game set in a future dystopia where The Computer runs everything in a bureaucratic nightmare where life is cheap and no one trusts each other. How cheap is life? You get to start with six of them.

Gameplay is based on everyone involved having secret motives; often at cross purposes with everyone else in the game, but have to play nice lest they tip off the powers that be (The Computer), and get vaporized. But if they can convict the other players of treason...

What is the Tomb of Horrors?

The Tomb of Horrors is the classic Meat Grinder dungeon. It was created by Gary Gygax in the late 70's, it was made to kill super high level twink characters that people would run past him at conventions and such. It's become legendary as the ultimate "What is wrong with you, who would make this" dungeon. It's also known as the "Save, you die; no save, you die" dungeon.

Hopefully you can see why I want to put these two things together.

This Game will be run under the Paranoia XP system. As mentioned, you don't get to learn the rules of Paranoia. Displaying knowledge of the rules is treason and punishable by death. So if you do know the rules, be sneaky about it.

However, it is cruel to toss you into the world of Paranoia with no preparation whatsoever. So I have procured an editted version of the rulebook, so that you will not be tempted to commit treason! Read and enjoy.

I am looking to run this RP on the board, as there are going to be way too many timezone conflicts to do this in chat, and I am just not quick enough on my feet to run paranoia in realtime. I am looking to get 5-6 players, but I may accept more.

If you are interested, just say so. If you're really looking to impress me, roll up a character! Make a starting character.  "But Purvis!" you may say, "Tomb of Horrors is for high level characters, what can starting Paranoia characters expect to do?" And to this I say: "Yes!"

Paranoia: Your friends are trying to kill you.

Tomb of Horrors: The environment and everything in it is trying to kill you.

Agh, did I show up too late for this?

If not, /in. I'd make a character, but only Communists read the rulebook.

EDIT: Oh, wait, this rulebook is for Red clearance. Okay, getting to work...

Agh, how do I make a character if I don't know what game type we're playing!? >_<

Agh, how do I make a character if I don't know what game type we're playing!? >_<

That doesn't seem too hard. Just make a character that would fit both settings, I'd guess -- you're basically subjecting a character from Paranoia to the harsh rigors of the Tomb of Horrors, or a character fit for the Tomb of Horrors through the Mind Screw that is Paranoia.

That said, I've never played Mao before. Sign me up!

What time are we playing? I need to know so I can convert it to Hawaii time.

There are three types of Paranoia game, apparently - Classic, Straight and Zap. I have no idea which one we're using.

INFRARED USERS MAY NOW CONTINUE READING.

...HOW DID YOU KNOW I SAID THAT? CLEARLY YOU ARE A COMMUNIST PLANNING TO OVERTHROW THE COMPUTER AND MUST BE TERMINATED. PERHAPS YOUR NEXT CLONE WILL BE MORE WILLING TO COMPLY.

Eh, I'd wager it'd be Classic, considering the setting.

Straight would just be hellish.

And Zap . . . well, that sounds like it'd be fun as all hell, but I doubt it'd be so.

Refer to your Clearance-RED PDF file's notes on each of the above and your prior knowledge of peoples' opinions of Tomb of Horrors to understand why I say this.

Consider that we're playing TOMB OF HORRORS here.

Because we'd last all of three seconds?

Game Style will be Classic, but I will borrow liberally from Zap and Straight styles as needed.

Also, as I'll be taking this from a published module, it's only polite not to read the module ahead of time. After all, this is Paranoia. Unlike other (not-fun) RPGs, A game of Paranoia can be fulfilling and fun even if one doesn't make it a quarter of the way through the RP.

Finally. If you are interested in being assigned a character, let me know. If you are interested in making a character, let me know. If you are making your own character, you have my leave to override any character creation rolls if you can think of something that is funnier. Use Custom Style to pick your stats (That is, from a pool of 40 points). Once you are done, PM it to me. I will pick people who wish for characters through a complex matrix of nepotism and evaluation of awesome. I will pick from those who make their characters by selecting the characters who amuse me the most.

DO YOUR BEST. DOING YOUR BEST IS MANDATORY.

I would like to join because I have complete faith that my friend, the Computer, will guide me safely through this Tomb of Treason or whatever this Commie hole is called.

Also, anyone that tells you that I've had experience (and a quite a sadistic fun time) GM'ing Paranoia is most certainly a treasonous Commie wrench who should be executed on the spot.

Friend Computer, what clearance is a D&D 3.5 ED converted copy of the Tomb of Horrors (from the WotC site)?

I may be required to self-terminate...

I have read nothing of the Tomb of Horrors. Instead, its reputation (though no info about it -- I'm completely in the dark about the traps and tricks there) proceeds/precedes it (whichever is the proper term).

I'll be making my own character -- cast from the very loose-leaf mold of my usual OC, she'll be tailored to suit Paranoia's standards. All 6 lives of her. That said, I'll get back to work on creation . . .

Friend Computer wishes to know your, yes your!, preferences! Please report to Termination Facility YUK-4 for mandatory surveys!

Is it the preference of the majority that I start you out in front of the dungeon with a general write-up of how and why you got there, or would you like me to start with a call to briefing? With the former, we get to the killing-you-guy part right off the bat. With the latter, you get time to get a feel for the setting, RP a bit, and do fun things like scour the IR Market and possibly kill each other before we even begin. However, that also means it would probably take a couple days to a couple weeks to actually get to the dungeon. I am patient and do not consider that a drawback, but others may.

I will go with the will of the majority on this.

Extra Crispy Bonus Announcement! Of the people making their own sheets, the first one to PM me a good one will be given 3 bonus Perversity Points

In the meantime, do not reread, and just forget about everything you've seen.

I, in my loyalty to the Computer, anticipated this request and have already begun complying. All I remember is incidental details about certain traps, but not where the are or how to avoid/trigger them. I should have forgotten the rest soon.
