As requested by Edible in the FIFA political/economic ramifications thread in LJ, now we have a thread to discuss the actual games instead of crowding that talk over there.

Anyways, the BR/Croatia game...definitely a ridiculous starter with own goal, penalty call, lousy play on both ends, and more. This isn't setting up a great outlook.... :\
At least there are tomorrow's games to look forward to instead; let's hope they are more interesting than what we saw today.

Eh, can't delete my post from that thread, so I'll just copy the content here:

The match was really fun to watch up until the 70th minute when the godawful idiot penalty ruined my mood. The live feed in our domestic TV was plagued with technical difficulties, too - at times the picture would lag a few seconds behind the audio, and the commentary would randomly stutter throughout the match. Well, tomorrow's matches both sound interesting, so let's hope for a quick improvement.

By the way, I don't know why would Polish commentators play favourites and hype Brazil all the time, but they did. One of them even started shouting "yeah" when Neymar scored before very awkwardly transitioning it into "goal". Things like this will hardly bring Brazil any sympathy.

He could've saved all three of those shots imo, and I was a keeper too back when I used to play soccer competitively.

Still happy Brazil won, not happy with how though.

Didn't watch 2nd half as it was getting late (fuck you time zones).

The own goal was odd. I wasn't expecting that at all. Felt like a very bad mistake and communication error. The 1-1 was deserved as Croatia let the piss-ball pass their defence line into their goal. Not sure about the penalty, very odd one but yea such is football.

Tonight, Spain vs Netherlands. I am worried about this as finals of WC2010 were thrilling but also extremely frustrating because I keep remembering Spain as the masters-of-diving and whining. Not that Arjen Robben isn't the same but hey!

Edit: Also FRIDAY THE 13TH. Let us also hope Spain is extremely superstitious!

To be fair it's the guy's fault for having his foot stuck out like that when sliding in the box :V trust me, as a footie player it's really easy to trip like that.

That one spanish defender didn't stick with their own defensive line, which is how they got exploited like that.

I am sorry, I couldn't hear you over the sound of Persie's headbutt goal :V

So yea, half time. 1-1. Time to settle the score in the 2nd half. Though I am not confident yet with NETHERLANDS play style. The defence is the suck x 1000. The last misser was thanks to our goal keeper gently touching the ball away, otherwise it might have been a 2-0 half time. Fuck.

Penalty is hard to judge. Easy for us to talk from a television, repeating 30x the scene from 1000 angles. Imagine the referee's viewpoint, he noticed it as a slide/trip/hooking with the heel. I thought the same when I seen the first replay from regular angle. It is a penalty if you judge it by the second.

Only after the different angles you see that he just trips over the ankles of the dutchy. So yea, shit happens for NL.

Consensus is that it wasn't a penalty (no contact), but it sure took about three-four replays for people to start doubting what looked like a confirmed a-ok call. Easily understandable, even if the ref was standing close.
